The Questioning Attitude

The Questioning Attitude

A reader comments that everyone asks questions

I have not found this to be true from my experience. Whenever I have been in any class either as a teacher or student there have been two or three asking questions and the rest relatively silent. Whenever I have discussed philosophy with others I have found that few have questions about what they have learned.

All people do ask some questions but they are usually related to the assignment at hand making the question part of following orders to learn rather than original thought.

Scholars and researches ask questions in their line of work but most of them do not question their authorities. They usually ask questions to merely reinforce their belief system.

Disciples and aspiring disciples are found in all fields of human endeavor. If you find one asking questions requiring independent thought then there is evidence that the person is on the path.

The aspiring disciple not only asks more questions, but asks a different kind of question than does the average person.

Her are some examples:

Authoritative Teacher: The sun is the hottest orb in the solar system.

Average student: No question. He just accepted what he has been told.

Above average student: How hot is it?

Aspiring disciple: How can you prove it is the hottest? Do you know the temperature at Jupiter’s core?

Disciple: What makes you so sure the sun is hot – after all microwave energy in an appliance is not hot until it reaches its destination.

Authoritative Teacher: A lone gunman killed JFK

Average student: No question. He just accepted what he has been told.

Above average student: What about the reports of a conspiracy?

Aspiring disciple: What about the magic bullet theory? How do you explain that?

Disciple: Let me ask some questions about the probably root cause of the assassination. I have a question related to his mob connections…

Authoritative Teacher: The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Nothing can go faster than this.

Average student: No question. He just accepted what he has been told.

Above average student: Isn’t the exact speed of light 186,232 miles per second?

Aspiring disciple: What about the case of a galaxy traveling 120,000 miles per second away from the earth and then another galaxy traveling 120,000 miles per second away from the earth in the opposite direction? Wouldn’t this mean that they are traveling 240,00 miles per second away from each other relative to the earth? Is not this faster than light?

Disciple: Not too long ago they thought we could not travel faster than sound. Now there seems to be a correspondence between light and sound, in other words light is sound vibrating at a faster rate. Would this not mean that the light barrier could also be surpassed?

Authoritative Teacher: The Stigmata is a sign from God

Average student: No question. He just accepted what he has been told.

Above average student: What causes the Stigmata?

Aspiring disciple: What makes you think it is a sign from God? Is it not possible that there is a natural cause?

Disciple: Isn’t it possible that this is a sign of a person’s intense belief system manifesting reality rather than a sign from God?

I could have added one more category here and that is the pseudo intellectual. This guy asks questions to show off his own intelligence more than with the idea of learning anything. An example would be the above student who corrects the teacher with a more exact reference to the exact speed of light. This correction was not necessary to help in the point the teacher was making.

One thing to notice about these questions is that as we progress from the average student to the disciple we find the questions will be more challenging to the status quo, more independently thought out and less likely to follow the line of least resistance.

This illustrates that when I speak of an aspiring disciple asking questions, I do not mean just any question, but that he acquires a questioning mind which questions mainstream thought.

Isaiah wisely said: “He that believeth doth not make haste.”

The disciple, or aspiring disciple, will not believe in haste what he has been told. He will check it out and question it no matter how unpopular he is for doing so.

Now we move on to the next principle in the discovery of truth which is:

Plant a seed thought in your mind and heart, and feed this thought with contemplation and meditation. Observe the fruit that comes forth, and accept that which is sweet and registers with your soul.

What is a seed thought and why is this a viable tool in the discovery of truth?

A seed thought is basically any thought, sentence, phrase, or idea that you choose to focus on with contemplation over a period of time. Because all words are symbols of some truth all seed thoughts have the capacity to generate higher realization.

Some teachers have emphasized having a monthly seed thought and this is not a bad idea, but I recommend having at least three working out within you at all times.

(1) A seed thought around a great mystery that may take you a lifetime to solve.

(2) A seed thought around an idea that will probably bear fruit within 30 days.

(3) A seed thought around a concept that you will reveal light in the present time.

Now let us demonstrate the use of seed thoughts in the search for truth. I will give you a thought and you contemplate it, think about it and use it in your meditation and see what realizations of truth comes to mind.

The Thought:

“As I focus my attention on the light of the soul I see a greater light still.”

Contemplate this sentence my friends and share with us what comes to you.

Remember the principle of asking and receiving.

What are some questions we can ask ourselves about this phrase to stimulate greater light?

More on Questions

I received an e-mail asking me why I do not use the principle of manifestation I talked about earlier to manifest the wealth I need.. It sounds simple when I present it but mastering the process is quite difficult. To get an idea of how difficult we can look at those who have manifested the stigmata and observe how much they had to go through to create it.

First the dedicated Saint had to visualize the crucifixion and sufferings of Christ with relentless persistence. Then he had to identify emotionally with the suffering, often for many years.

Even though there were many seeking for holiness, those who actually experienced the Stigmata were very few.

If we can thus identify with the energy and dedication necessary to produce this one manifestation then we can understand better how difficult it is for us average folk to master this science of direct manifestation.

Nevertheless, the art is possible to master and, as it is in all things, eventually the impossible becomes possible, and the possible then becomes an easy thing to accomplish.

OK, we have given out the first seed thought and nothing much happened. Then I gave a hint that the principle of questioning should be applied and still not much has happened although I must admit that Rick came up with an interesting visualization.

Remember that I told you that a disciple will ask questions?

How many of you thought to ask questions about the seed thought when I gave it out? As we progress toward discipleship we must remember this. All people will ask questions when they are directed to, but how about when we are not directed to? How about when I just give the thought out with little information? Did you think to ask?

If not do not be discouraged. We are not all here because we are perfect, but to make progress in that direction.

I am going to help you out with the questions on this seed thought, but for the next one I expect that you will need little help.

Let us repeat the seed thought:

“As I focus my attention on the light of the soul I see a greater light still.”

Questions:

What is light anyway and how does it reveal?

What is the source of the greater light?

How could I see the greater light within an already great light?

Does this lesser and greater light create a duality?

Do the two lights produce contrast?

Does the contrast create higher vision?

What is the lower correspondence to the two lights?

To Question or Not

To Question or Not

Question: What is the key revealed in the parable of persistence that aids in the discovery of truth and how does the principle of attention and the point of tension come into play?

The group gave good answers to this, basically saying that energy follows thought and that persistently throwing a question into the ethers creates point of tension.

I like it when the group touches on principles rather than data.

It does seem to be a law that all things of value come to us after a period of intense struggle and this would include knowledge.

There are questions I have had that I have struggled with for as long as thirty years and then one day the answer just came in a flash. Sometimes it is so simple that I feel like slapping myself for not thinking of it sooner. From experience I can tell you that you reap great dividends by not giving up on the search for answers.. If you do not give up the answers will come sooner or later.

Question:

Which of the following is the most significant characteristic of one who is approaching discipleship and why?

(1) He (or she) loves everyone

(2) He has studied under a great teacher

(3) He has read all the best books and is well educated.

(4) He lives a good life.

(5) He asks questions

(6) He seeks to escape dualities.

(7) He believes the scriptures.

(8) He wants to be a teacher

(9) He reads the National Enquirer.

Answers

I can’t remember who said it but my favorite answer has to be the comment of secret messages being related in code through the Enquirer.

Actually most of you settled on the answer I was looking for which, of course, number five.

Here is an example of one of the good answers we received:

“To live engaged in life, to grow, is to ask questions which lead us to learn to think

critically. The quality of a question is not in its answer but in the depth and number of questions that are evoked from its asking.”

During my last days as a member of a church I was teaching a Sunday School class about the coming of Christ and asked what I thought was a good question. I asked them to suppose that Jesus had made his Second Coming and was standing right here in front of us. What would you ask him?

There were about 50 people in the class and not a hand went up. I was amazed at this. No one had any question, in other words, there was nothing any one wanted to learn from the Master. No wonder he had not showed up yet!

I tried to shame them into an answer by saying something like:

“Surely someone here has at least one question you’d like to ask Jesus.”

Not a hand went up.

At this point I picked on a lady who I considered more spiritual than most and asked her specifically: “What would you ask the Messiah if he was standing right here in front of you?”

She thought a moment and said: “I’d ask him how to give better lessons when I teach.”

I was flabbergasted. According to their belief system Jesus could reveal any mystery they wanted to know and I had to force a question out of them. Worse still is that the question that did finally surface could be answered by thousands of people.

Is it any wonder that I (as well as many of you) have graduated out of mainstream religion and into a higher classroom? The key to this graduation is to seek, ask and receive.

When I was young and naïve I assumed that most people were curious and wanted to know the many mysteries that lie before us, but was indeed amazed at how few really do want to know and seek answers.

Many believe that just being a good loving person and living a good life is the key to being noticed by the Great Ones but such is not the case. Becoming a well-rounded and decent person in society is only a first step. The real quantum leap forward comes when the individual starts asking the why of things.

The Eucharist

I want to clear up one point about the Eucharist. Some seem to think that I see no value in it or discount the possibility of communion with the Spirit of Christ from this sacrament. Such is not the case. I do believe that through ceremonial orders such as this that communion through the Holy Spirit is indeed enhanced and becomes real. In fact we participated in this at the gathering.

What I discount is that the bread and wine are turned into the actual body and blood of the entity Jesus. For one thing, if you take all the bread or wafers being consumed at communion on any given Sunday you would have to have a total amount of several tons. This would mean that the body of Jesus would be larger than a whale.

And who has power to give you the Eucharist? Does it have to come from a Catholic Priest or a Mormon who both claim authority from the apostles? Are all the protestants rejected in their communion with God? The answer should be obvious.

Stigmata

Question: Is the stigmata, bleeding crying statues, faces appearing on walls etc. true signs from God? If they are what is the purpose behind such strange appearances?

If the cause behind it is not as simple as a sign from God then what do you suppose is the cause? What would truly cause a stigmata for instance.

All of our physical forms including our whole world was created first upon higher planes. The first world of form where form creation takes place is the mental, the second the astral/emotional, the third the etheric and finally the dense physical. In order to manifest miraculous creation as Jesus did with the loaves and fishes the master magician must create sequentially from the higher level on down.

Suppose you wanted to manifest an apple. First you get the idea of an apple and then you visualize it on the plane of the mind. Once you see this in your mind’s eyes this fruit then takes on a real existence in the mental plane. The next step is to clothe the mental apple by the power of desire with emotional substance. When you do this, the power of your desire for the apple manifests the fruit in two worlds – the mental and astral.

What usually happens at this point?

At this point you want an apple so much you will walk over to the refrigerator and take one out and eat it.

Ahh, but that’s the easy way out. In truth if you could continue to visualize the apple while saturating it with desire energy you could actually manifest it on the physical plane.

Those who thus experience the Stigmata and other similar miracles are really unconscious magicians who are applying these principles. Their one-pointed visualization of the suffering of Christ accompanied by a desire for approval from God can indeed manifest some interesting phenomenon.

It is not a sign from a God who is out there on a throne, but a sign that we are reflection, or in the image of God, and all the miraculous creative abilities of God are within us.

Perfect Balance

Perfect Balance

The latest assignment is:

All of creation takes place because of interplay of positive and negative (male-female) forces. Most teachers believe that these two forces are exactly equal and balance each other out and therefore there is no such thing as good and evil in the scheme of things.

Why is this an illusionary belief? Are the positive and negative (good and evil) exactly equal? If not then what does this have to do with the creation of the dominating good? What would happen if the dualities were exactly equal?

Positive and negative can only exist when they are close to being equal, but not quite equal. The imbalance of energy in our physical world thus causes one energy to be a sending one and one to be a receiver. The process of sending and receiving is an attempt by nature to bring balance in the universe.

If all energies were to become perfectly balanced then we would have perfect circles formed around a point which would then be reduced to a point of nothingness. As it is, there are no perfect circles and this lack of perfect circles of energy in motion creates a spiral of ever increasing size. The universe is such a spiral of ever increasing size, ever expanding. Just as we humans are ever seeking to increase our ring-pass-not, even so is the universe as a whole expanding its ring.

The universe of physical form is created because one of the energies dominates and this domination is called “the dominating good” by the sages.

In the total scheme of things evil is that which takes us toward dissolution and nothingness and good is that which takes us toward creation and order. We thus have these two energies interplaying, one in the direction of disorder and dissolution and the other toward order and creation. Thankfully the energy of creation dominates and thus the universe is ever Becoming and evolving as an ever expanding spiral. Then when any creation has finished with its purpose dissolution dominates and all elements return to their source.

Whereas it is true that the positive energy dominates in our physical world the negative dominates in the etheric and astral. Then the positive dominates in the mental and so on up to the monad.

This universe is created by seven rays and is part of seven planes which is merely a subplane of a greater system of seven greater planes.

Each odd number representing a ray or plane (and even years) is polarized in the positive energy and the even numbers are polarized in the negative energy. Notice that concerning this great number of seven that we have four positive numbers and three negative which gives all creation a domination toward the positive, or the dominating good.

When the time comes in the far future that the universe will be created on a basis of twelve then a point of perfect balance will be reached; thus the great symbology and power of twelve as a spiritual number that penetrates the soul into the unseen.

Time to move on to the next principle of discovery which is:

Seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened – Ask and you shall receive.

I remember when I first heard this scripture when I was a kid. I thought this was a great promise because I had many questions. But then to my disappointment I found that just asking God for an answer did not seem to work. Finally, I found the following scripture which gave me encouragement. Here it is in a modern English translation.

Jesus said: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You would shout up to him, ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit and I’ve nothing to give him to eat.’ He would call down from his bedroom, ‘Please don’t ask me to get up. The door is locked for the night and we are all in bed. I just can’t help you this time.’

“But I’ll tell you this; though he won’t do it as a friend, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you everything you want; just because of your persistence. And so it is with prayer; keep on asking and you will keep on getting; keep on looking and you will keep on finding; knock and the door will be opened. Everyone who asks, receives; all who seek, find; and the door is opened to everyone who knocks.” Luke 11:6-10

Question: What is the key revealed here that aids in the discovery of truth and how does the principle of attention and the point of tension come into play?

Questions

Question: You say karma may dictate whether or not a spiritual healing may take place. Does this mean that such a person should not seek medical help to make sue he suffers from karma?

I was talking about spiritual healing and even if a spiritual healing is not possible there is nothing wrong with doing all within your power to obtain the healing. I never suggested otherwise. Karma does not take away free will.

Note that I still stated that there are always “steps” that can be taken to obtain “wholeness.” There are times that the person is not prepared for a spiritual healing, but there is always a way to better health. One must find it and tread the path.

I never once read where Edgar Cayce said “no” to assisting in physical cures of the thousands of people who applied to him over several decades.

Question: Why did Edgar Cayce never say no to those who sought his help?

I have also never said no, yet there have been times that the Spirit said no. But even there solutions have been sought and sometimes found when Higher Will was followed. Edgar Cayce used many different methods. When spiritual healing is not permitted then medicine, herbs and other physical methods are in harmony with law as Cayce recommended.

I once knew a woman near death’s door with pernicious anemia who asked for a blessing from me when I went to church decades ago. I really wanted to bless her with a miraculous healing, but the Spirit restrained me so I could not promise her a healing.

She received comfort but her illness remained and then she asked again for another blessing a few weeks later. Again I hoped for a miracle and again the answer was no.

Finally she asked me a third time. But this time I just didn’t want to go through the motions, but sought for an answer and as I looked within the Spirit said:

“This person is very depressed and her depression focuses her mind on unbelief rather than faith. Lift up her downward focussed eyes to the Spirit and she shall be healed.”

Before the blessing I told her of the impressions I had from the Spirit and she admitted that she had been very depressed and would attempt to lift her spirits for the blessing.

This time when we laid our hands on her head the answer was yes and I told her she would be healed.

The next time I saw her in church I was delighted to see her happy and perfectly well after a long lingering illness.

Question: You said, “Suffering only comes to us when the Purpose of God is resisted. When the patient learns where the resistance is and corrects it then a healing becomes possible.”

And how exactly does a three year-old child with leukemia come to that realization? And exactly how did that child “resist”?

A three year old child has usually experienced thousands of years in mortal life in past lives and, as unfortunate as it seems, many of us will suffer effects of karma as children in future lives. Before a child is born he or she saw the circumstances in the appointed body and accepted them for the sake of progression.

So why do you think children suffer? Do you picture some fiendish God punishing the innocent or merely that all misfortune is just a matter of random luck?

Question: Shouldn’t we just focus on the words of Christ?

Why do you think that should be the only focus?

Jesus said that his followers shall do greater works than he did. (See John 14:12). Pursuing the path to greater works and greater revelation is our focus here and I’m sure Christ would approve. This is not a Bible study class and that is not a bad thing.

When Jesus appeared he did not concentrate on the standard teachings of Moses, but presented new concepts. The true teachers in this age are the same. They will not just rehash the old, but present the new, for, after all, God says, “I make all things new.” Rev 21:5

Then too Isaiah says: “Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.” Isa 42:9

The relationship of humanity to Christ has not been sufficient the past 2000 years and have indeed lacked a fullness as was prophesied by Paul:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” II Tim 4:3-4

Fables have indeed been built around many of the teachings of Christ, including the sacraments.

Question: Shouldn’t we just go with the simple teachings in the scriptures. You seem to add too much complexity.

So the atomic bomb did not really go off because it was complex. Your computer does not really work because it too is very complex. Isaiah could not be a true prophet because his writings are probably the most complex on the planet. Also your body is extremely complex yet it operates on true principles.

Truth is sometimes simple and sometimes complex. What I attempt to do is make the complex simple and I must be having some success because I have received numerous comments in this direction.

Enduring the Presence

Enduring the Presence

Readers are still questioning why the presence of a higher being could generate fear.

Refer back to my analogy on temperature and apply it to vibration. The higher the life in evolution the higher the vibration and the greater the adjustment necessary to endure the presence.

For instance of Moses it was written

“By faith he (Moses) forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” Heb 11:27

Notice that the writer of the scripture admires Moses for enduring the presence of God (or the Master he was working with). He points out that anyone who has the courage and fortitude to do this certainly would not fear the king of Egypt.

The reason is that it takes more courage to enter into the spiritual presence of one of the Great Ones than it does to risk certain death by offending absolute ruler on earth.

But you may ask, “I know of lots of people who have seen higher beings and there was no fear.”

99% of all such visions are from either the astral world or an encounter with a thought form and these do not have a high vibration and create no cause for alarm. Even a Master from the 5th Kingdom can visit you physically with no alarming exchange of vibration. But if you go to the higher lives in the spirit and see or experience them as they are the vibration difference will be alarming for the first several encounters. Also, if a Master connects with you in the Spirit you will note a high vibration that needs a period of adjustment. If a Master decides to admit you into his ashram you will first be sent a flow of energy of higher vibration to give you time to adjust. This adjustment can be disturbing at first – a little like getting into a hot bath. It’s discomforting at first but after you adjust it is OK.

Then after the disciple makes adjustments in vibration he or she is admitted to the group. If the ashram were to let you in without the adjustment you may either suffer death or go insane.

Lives higher than the Masters of the 5th kingdom are more intense still and their vibration can definitely create some fear at first. For instance, if you started to enter your tub and discovered the water was actually boiling you would be justifiable afraid to enter. Your body would have to undergo some type of change to enter such heat and if someone told you that you could enter safely you would have natural doubts, This would require a great act of faith in whoever told you to enter the boiling water.

Even so, high entities of light on the first Ray have this effect and this fear is what Moses had to overcome.

There is one person who joined this group who encountered a portion of this First Ray energy and that was Alley who created the artwork for my web page. I think it may have scared her off the group as we have not heard from her for some time. I think she may have had some type of assignment waiting for her.

Even though the vibration of higher lives is very intense the person receiving them will inherently know that they are on the side of good because the vibration will be recognized by the inner most part of themselves as desirable to attain.

All Things Being Equal?

Several thoughts concerning fear.

Without fear there is no courage and without courage there is no point of tension and with no point of tension there are no quantum leaps into newness and great adventures.

Perfect love casteth out fear, but it does not prevent the pilgrim from encountering and facing the fear.

There is a certain amount of illusion behind most fears, but there is also great illusion behind most proclamations of love. Unraveling the real fear and mastering it is as important as discovering the real love of God and accepting it.

The most important fear to master is the fear of fear, for he who fears fear will pretend to himself that he has no fear in any circumstances. Fear thus becomes a seed growing in the dark seeking the light of day.

The question: “What do we mean when we say that “good dominates?”

“Why do you suppose it is true that good dominates in the end and how can a knowledge of this help us to overcome the primal fear which is a fear of loss?”

All of creation takes place because of an interplay of positive and negative (male-female) forces.

The Power of Creation

Question: “If all of creation takes place because of an interplay of positive and negative (male-female) forces how do you explain cell reproduction with no sex?

The activity within the organism responsible for the growth of the new cell takes place as a result of positive and negative (male-female) forces. Without this interplay of forces there would be no cell to even reproduce.

Nothing is neutral in the world of form. Some believe that stable atoms, neutrons and cells are neutral, but they all will have a small charge either positive or negative.

No two things in the world of form are exactly identical but are close enough that the differences are not perceptible. No copy of anything is exact but again is close enough that the differences are not perceptible.

Even before the child displays physical sex his creation takes place through the interplay of positive and negative (male-female) forces., originating of course with the interplay of the male and female in the sex act itself.

From the one God did come the two (male female). But when there was one there was no creation. There was only creation when we had the two in order to have the interplay.

By the way, the ancient wisdom (HPB I believe) also teaches that there is no such thing as a number one unless you have a two. You either have zero or unlimited numbers because if you have one you have to have an originating source of the one which also makes two.

Also if you have one you also have zero which also makes two concepts.

Question: How then did two occur from one … if it wasn’t creation ..

As Blavatsky said if there is one there has to be two. The first creation, if there was such a thing, would have to have a second force acting upon it making a correspondence of male and female energy.

Now let us suppose there was a time (or no time) when there was no creation. Would there still be a duality? Here is an interesting quote from my book.

“It was an amazing feeling, or non-feeling, and even though there was a time that decision existed with no creation, I sensed that there were universes beyond and before creation, as we know it, and I could retrieve no information about them. I did sense that God, or Decision, existed in a point beyond and before time and space. Before this point were two possibilities. They were the possibility of Something, and Nothing, or the possibility of Creation or No Creation.

Suddenly an inspiring phrase came to me. “It was the decision to be or not to be. That is the question!”

So even before form and space existed there was still a duality – the possibility of nothing (female) and the possibility of something (male) or the decision to be or not to be.

Question: How is female nothing and male something?

The seen, the radiant, that which is in motion, the out breath corresponds to male. The invisible, the magnetic, the involution, the in breath corresponds to female. Wherever there is two there is one that corresponds to male and the other to female. That which we call nothing is an esoteric something.

Mastering Fear

Mastering Fear

A reader says this: “I can’t imagine having a fear of God. It just doesn’t fit in with my beliefs. It is one of the reasons that I left the church and its doctrines behind.”

JJ: Fear is not always related to illusionary beliefs. Often this is true but such is not always the case.

The religious zealot does indeed fear God because of illusionary beliefs planted into him by various preachers and belief systems.

On the other hand, most new agers do NOT fear God for the same reason. They see nothing to fear because they have never encountered the Angel of the Presence or a Higher Life on First Ray energy. Many have the illusionary belief that all encounters with the God presence is very pleasant and only a deluded one would consider fear.

The typical New Ager is a little like Luke in Star Wars who thought he had everything down. The initiate is like Yoda who knows of the realities to come and tells him “you shall fear.”

Many go through numerous lifetimes with this belief until they encounter the Dweller on the Threshold. This dweller is terrifying enough, yet to destroy this Dweller one must face the Angel of the Presence which is even more terrifying because this, once encountered, opens up such power that it will feel like you could be destroyed body mind and spirit with a blink of an eye. Moses had to spend 40 years in contemplation of the presence before he mustered the courage to face it. When he finally did face it he was transfigured.

There are many life forms and beings working on the side of good who are much higher in vibration than ourselves of which the average seeker is totally unaware and unprepared to enter into the presence of such. This difference in vibration can require great courage to approach.

Your body for instance is 98.6 degrees but if it touches something 200 degrees discomfort would ensue.

Even so it is with us ordinary humans and the higher God lives. We must raise our vibration (temperature) in order to endure their presence or even the bravest of hearts will experience some fear.

Many believe that fear is purely based on illusion. I may be the first to say this, but yes, fear is based on truth. How one reacts to truth perceived can determine the fear.

Let me give an example. Let us suppose that you are living a very positive life and the thought of any type of fear is the farthest thing from your mind as you are enjoying a ride in the country with your wife and kids. As you descend down a mountainous range you feel quite secure for you have traveled it many times, but this time is different. This time your brakes go out. You press the pedal several times and nothing happens as you speed around corners barely managing to evade running off the edge which would surely end the lives of you and your family. Because you have traveled this road many times you know things will only get worse for incline just increases. You make a calculation that tells you that the chances are that very great that you and your family are going to be greatly injured or die.

This “truth” brings numerous fears to your mind.

As we said previously, fear always involves a loss of some type and the possible loss here is very real. The fears in this situation revolve around the following losses:

(1) Loss of your own life

(2) Loss of your family’s lives.

(3) Loss of opportunity for your kids to grow up and face the challenges of life.

(4) Loss of an earthly relationship with your family.

Numerous other losses could be cited here but the point is that all these fears revolving around loss are based on a very probable truth.

Now even if a miracle happens and you regain control – this does not mean your fear was based on illusion. At the time that you were descending without brakes it was indeed true that you had a high probability of disaster. The only thing that averted it was the fact that your fear did not let you accept such a fate and you did all in your power to change the future.

Even a fear within a dream is based on truth. I used to dream on a regular basis of this grotesque monster in various forms that chased me. It often pursued me for some time and often caught me at some dead end and as it approached me I experienced great fear and usually woke up about that point.

Now one may object her and say “That was just a dream and not reality so your fear there was based on illusion.”

Not so my friend for it is indeed true that I was having a dream and that within the dream I was perceiving a monster and there was a real possibility of loss.

What were the possible losses involved?

(1) I was enjoying most of the dream and the monster threatened the loss of an enjoyable dream experience that I wanted to savor.

(2) Loss of sleep. I didn’t want to wake up and have to struggle getting back to sleep.

Then one night I was having the dream something different happened. The monster had me cornered and there was no place to run. I was to either die within the dream, never a pleasant experience, or figure a way out. I looked up at the monster and he was ferocious indeed. He was about twenty feet tall and mean as hell and appeared ready to devour me in about three seconds.

As I contemplated the thought of fighting back occurred to me for the first time, but I had difficulty in accepting it for the monster looked a hundred times stronger than me. When I realized that I was faced with the choice of fighting or doing nothing I decided to go out fighting and I attacked the monster. To my surprise I saw fear in the monsters eyes when I attacked. This gave me courage and I continued and when I pressed forward I discovered to my joy that I was much stronger than the monster. I then proceeded to give him a good beating and finally picked him up with super human strength and threw him off into oblivion.

Just as the monster caused a fear in the dream state just as real as a fear in the awake state even so did I feel a joy at overcoming the monster that was just as real as anything while awake. In fact I felt great for about three days after the dream.

The reason I talk to her about truth within dreams is that I’m sure some are going to tell us that life in these dualities is not real, therefore, all fear is based on perception within the dualities which is not real.

Whereas the real truth is that whether we be in the illusion of physical duality, or a dream state it is indeed true that our consciousness is there and the perceptions we have there create a real experience. Even though the monster did not exist in this waking reality, the experience of the monster was real and this made the fear real.

If you lose your brakes going down a steep incline it does little good to tell yourself “this is not the true reality.” It is a true reality that you are in the experience and if you do not make the best of it you will suffer loss.

Listen to what a Master of Wisdom has to say about fear:

“You ask: What are the basic causes of fear? To that question, if carried far enough back into the esoteric history of the solar system there is no intelligible answer to be given. Only the advanced initiate can comprehend. Fear has its roots in the warp and woof of matter itself, and is par excellence, a formulation or effect of the mind principle, and a result of mental activity. The fact that birds and animals know fear puts the whole subject upon a wider footing than if it were simply a human failing and the result of the activity of the functioning of the human mind. It is not incident upon a man’s possessing a reasoning mind; if he used his reason in the correct way he could eliminate fear. It lies in what is called cosmic Evil-a high sounding phrase, conveying little. It is inherent in the fact of matter itself and in the play of the pairs of opposites-soul and matter.” A Treatise on White Magic, Page 298

In harmony with this Joseph Smith made the interesting statement that “God created the worlds with fear and trembling.” This would explain why “fear has its roots in the warp and woof of matter itself.”

Now some have said that all fear is caused by a lack of love, but such is not the case. In the example of the fear generated by the failing brakes the intensity of it was increased because of love for wife and children.

Fear is overcome through using the mind to calculate the best possible moves to eliminate the perceived future loss. For instance, in my dream I mentally calculated that the only possible way out was to fight and this eliminated the fear. I did not overcome the fear of the monster by loving it, but by defeating it.

It is true that many have fears that are not justified because of wrong perception. For instance, one may fear that his spouse is cheating on him because of misperception or a wild imagination, but when he has attained correct use of the mind then his perception will be accurate. When perception and calculation are accurate then fear will be based on the real as in the example of the loss of the brakes.

This portrayal of fear by many teachers of the day as a thing held only by the deluded, the unloving, the unevolved or the ignorant has led many into great illusion. Because many seekers have swallowed this pleasant sounding doctrine without processing it through the mind they enter into a world of deception and denial.

When a fear surfaces, instead of facing and defeating it, they generate a “fear of fear” and they will think something like this:

“This fear is not real so I can not be experiencing it. Only the lesser evolved and the unloving have fear and since I am evolved and loving I cannot be experiencing it. Therefore, I deny this fear.”

Thus the seeker deceives himself rather than facing the fear and transcending it. That fear which is denied or suppressed does not go away. Instead it foments and grows and when it resurfaces it will loom greater than it was at the moment of burial.

The Now is the time to face and overcome and join in the company of the Great Ones.

Dominating Good

Dominating Good

Topic under discussion:

Concerning this principle Jesus taught:

“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Matt 7:9-11

Question:

How can we use this principle that Jesus taught to eliminate the fear that many have of offending God?

How do we know from this that if you are sincerely seeking truth and make a mistake while following the highest that you know that God will not become angry and send you to hell?

Those who have never been that involved or committed to a religion often have difficulty in identifying as to why anyone could be afraid of offending God, but for those who have or are passing through this thoughtform, the discovery of the truth that makes you free is a pearl of great price indeed. If you have not had to deal with this hurdle in this life do not relax because all have to face the fear of God at one time or another and the fear of God has more potency than any fear of a devil.

These words of Jesus are indeed a comfort to all who take the Bible seriously for he makes a statement that is easily verified by not only the mind, but the soul.

He basically says that we are full of imperfections, yet, even so, we are loving enough to desire good gifts for our children. If your child were to ask for a fish you would not give him a serpent that would bite him instead. If he’s hungry and asks for a piece of bread you would not mock your child and give him a rock to eat thinking he deserves nothing to eat.

If we then being imperfect know how to treat our children with reasonable helpfulness would not God who is perfect be even more loving, more giving and give us better and more exciting creative gifts than any of us can give to our children?

Who could be afraid of a God like this?

Jesus was teaching that it is silly to think that God, who is our Father, is sitting on some throne ruling in anger, waiting to destroy us at the first sign of rebellion.

If your own child makes a few mistakes would you send him to some fiery hell to burn forever?

No. A thousand times no!

If we would not do that to our children then why in the hell do people think that God would take some type of fiendish delight in seeing his own children suffer so?

Just like you would go to almost any length to help your child on the road to happiness and would give him chance after chance to make good and will embrace him at the first sign of cooperation, even so God has the wisdom to go one better.

When the reckless prodigal son decided to return to his father it is written: “And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”

The Father here is a symbol of God. And even though the wayward son spent all his inheritance and committed every wrong in the book his father was ever watchful and looked for his return without ceasing. Notice the wording when the son did return.

“But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him…”

So it is with us. Even though we may have made every mistake in he book and have offended every man and dog on the planet – as soon as we decide to move toward the Kingdom of God we will attract the attention of God and the servants of God and we will be seen by them even though we are “a great way off.”

One of the keys to overcoming the fear of God is to read the scriptures rather than listening to hellfire preachers for indeed the Christ, the Master of us all, did present a God that is to be loved and embraced and seeks for the true goodwill of his/her children.

Let me repeat the current principle aiding in the discovery of truth.

Faith in the “Dominating Good,” or a belief that God is good.

What do we mean when we say that “good dominates?”

Why do you suppose it is true that good dominates in the end and how can a knowledge of this help us to overcome the primal fear which is a fear of loss?

Truth in Beans

The principle of absolute truth in points of time and space should be easy to understand and accept, but as it turns out this seems to be a stumbling block for many. One of the reasons is that any seekers think they are being open minded to accepting the idea that truth is relative. But if we merely substitute the true idea that perception of truth is what is relative, the objection should go away.

Concerning our discussion of the truth in temperature and beans in a jar a reader insisted that the two examples were not comparable, that truth in temperature is indeed relative and beans in a jar are not.

Once we speak the same language concerning relativity here I am sure we will agree.

I used the example of the beans in the jar because it does correspond to the example of the temperature. Just like there are many different temperatures in many different places there are many different jars of beans in many locales and each jar will have a different number of beans. Since truth is what IS at a certain point in time and space then as we look at one point in time and space where there is located a single jar of beans we will find that there is only one number that represents the amount of beans in the jar.

When we do the same with temperature we go to one location and discover the temperature is say 70 degrees (rounding off to the nearest degree). So at this point in time and space there is only one answer and no application of relativity can change that answer, just as no application of relativity can change the fact that Bill Clinton was elected president, even when he is no longer president.

Just as your temperature outdoors can change as circumstances change even so can the number of beans be added to or taken away from any of the jars.

From this aspect one could say that the changing of reality or what is true is relative to the happenings of the day, but the point of truth in time and space is not relative to anything. When the present becomes the past no relativity can change the past, only our perceptions of the past can change.

We could say that the creation of what is true is relative, but when that creation becomes either present of past tense then that which IS becomes absolute. I know a lot of seekers hate the word absolute, but this word does seem to be accurate when looking at what is, for it cannot be changed – only our perception or memory can be.

If the temperature in my back yard yesterday at 1 PM was 85 degrees then this fact will be forever absolutely true and is henceforth not relative to anything.

This is an important principle to clarify because many in the New Age community are deceived by the concept of relative truth. I have met some, for instance, who think that if one person believes that there is no reincarnation, but only one life for the soul then that is true as their truth and if he believes in multiple lives then that is true as his own truth.

The obvious truth is that there is either reincarnation or there is not. Even though there are details we may not know, the principle is either true or it is not true and no relativity will change the matter.

The deception that comes with this type of belief in relative truth is that the incentive to find the real truth is removed. If a person is comfortable with his relative truth and if he thinks one relative truth is just as good as another then he will cease in making efforts to find the whole truth and will not consider that he may be wrong. When this happens his progression on the path will cease until he becomes aware through some pain imparted from his soul as a wake up call.

The Primal Fear

The Primal Fear

The question: What do you suppose are the basic fears that keep sincere people from discovering and accepting new truth?

A reader mentioned that the fear of the unknown is at the top of the list.

Yes, the fear of the unknown looms large indeed, but since many do not even think of the unknown, it does not enter into their consciousness to fear it so I would say that for the population as a whole a fear of failure or of being wrong would be number one.

But there is an underlying principle behind all fears which is the fear of loss.

One fears the unknown because he fears that the unknown may cause him to lose that which is known.

One fears failure because of the loss that failure may bring.

One fears being wrong because of the loss of all that time spent in learning and defending that which he thinks is correct.

One fears ridicule because he thinks he is loosing esteem with his friends.

One fears change because he may lose the benefits he had before the change.

If all fears are related to a fear of loss then this fear of loss is the primal fear that keeps us from all truth. If this is so then what can we do to remove all barriers between the seeker and truth?

The answer is to remove all fear of loss?

And how do we do this?

The Buddhist may answer that we need to realize that we do not need anything, but for most of us this is an impractical answer as we are lifetimes away from this.

Here is an answer I have found helpful in my life.

Realize that as you progress upon the path that every loss is replaced by a gain greater than that which is left behind. The only way to not acquire that gain is to let it slip through your fingers or throw it away.

“But,” says the objector, “we live in a realm of dualities so the loss must be replaced by an equal gain – not a greater gain.”

Not so because we live in a universe that operates under the “law of dominating good.” Or “Becoming.” This law of dominating good, which we have briefly discussed in the past, causes progression to NOT take the form of an endless repeating circle, but an ever expanding spiral of circles. Thus at each new turn of the spiral the ring-pass-not has expanded and we continually have new worlds to explore and new gains to acquire.

He who overcomes his fear of failure does so because he realizes that the lesson learned through the failure is more valuable than that which has been lost.

Let me repeat the story of Edison here:

A reporter once approached Thomas Edison as he was working on the light bulb and said: “You have been working on this silly light bulb for years and have attempted 10,000 times to make it work and they have all failed. After 10,000 failures are you now prepared to admit that this light bulb idea is just a dream?

Edison wisely answered: “My dear friend. I have not failed as you have said. Instead I have successfully identified 10,000 combinations that do not work. I am 10,000 steps closer to success and do not have many more to go.”

Edison thus did not fear failure because he saw a gain behind each failure that was greater than the loss of time, money and prestige he had invested.

Fear of rejection in some form is probably the second most common fear related to loss.

And what is the loss that is feared here? This is usually a fear of loss in relationships that one holds dear, such as spouse, friends, group and family.

If you are seeking after truth and find a piece of it and those dear to you discover your belief about it they are likely to reject you and you may indeed lose them. Jesus talked about this very principle when he said

“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.” Luke 12:51-53

When one person in a group discovers a new truth that is not accepted by the others there will indeed be a loss, and if that possibility of loss is not accepted by the seeker a fear will indeed surface.

A way through this fear is the realization that old associations will be replaced by others who are more like what you are becoming so in the end your new circle of associates will be more rewarding than the old. You also have the reward of truth itself which truth always brings more opportunities of Becoming.

But perhaps the greatest overriding fear of one approaching the straight and narrow path between the two extremes of error is the fear of hell, the fear of God’s wrath, the fear of being wrong or guilty before God, the fear of losing one’s soul or eternal life… These are all related to the fear of the unknown because no aspirant knows for sure the true fate that awaits him beyond the veil.

What is the answer to this, the greatest of fears, as one moves along the path of light?

The answer is the current principle under discussion:

Faith in the “Dominating Good,” or a belief that God is good.

Or more simply put “faith that God loves you.”

Concerning this principle Jesus taught:

“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Matt 7:9-11

Question:

How can we use this principle that Jesus taught to eliminate the fear that many have of offending God?

How do we know from this that if you are sincerely seeking truth and make a mistake while following the highest that you know that God will not become angry and send you to hell?

Lower Psychism and Truth

Lower Psychism and Truth

A reader wanted me to comment on the scriptures that seem to be against mediums. Here is just one from the Bible:

“I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.” Lev 20:66

What the scriptures are referring to here is the same as Djwhal Khul through Alice A. Bailey discussed when referring to “lower psychism.” They both even use the word prostitute in reference to a misuse of powers.

The reason the leaders of the human race have discouraged lower psychism during the past several ages is that humanity has evolved to the extent that it is time for us to move into higher psychism, or the magical world of the soul. Lower psychism gets its power through the illusionary astral body which turns truth upside down and makes the truth seem false and the false true.

Higher psychism perceives through the windows of the soul and is the one infallible guide.

Lower psychism relies on signs without whereas higher psychism focuses on the God within.

Any true student or teacher in this age will not depend on lower psychism for guidance, but will test all things against their own soul and that shall be their guide.

As far as magic goes the white magician (such as Jesus) creates supernatural results through the soul, or contacts through the soul. The magical power of the soul is only manifest when the self is forgotten and the purpose of God is sought and service is the objective.

Whereas the higher magic is not available to the selfish, the lower magic is available to all and is a definite tool of black magicians or the Dark Brothers. Lower magic is like money, which is neither good or evil in itself but can be used in either direction. The temptation when learning such arts is that the person who gains power often seeks to impress the uninformed and often uses the power of magic as a tool to control others and use unjust authority over their lives.

If you see one using regular magic you must look at his direction and the fruit of his works just as you would look at one who has money. If you want to know if a person is using money wisely you must look at the end result and the same is true for one who has power to direct deva and elemental lives.

Not very often does someone post a group or story that I cut and paste into a permanent file, but I an reposting the “Instructions for Life” here so they will wind up the Archives. They are not only good but are definitely from the mind of a creative thinker.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE

This is supposed to be written by the Dalai Lama but who knows?

  1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
  3. Follow the three R’s:

Respect for self
Respect for others and
Responsibility for all your actions.

  1. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  2. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
  3. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  4. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  5. Spend some time alone every day.
  6. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
  7. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  8. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
  9. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
  10. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
  11. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
  12. Be gentle with the earth.
  13. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
  14. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
  15. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
  16. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Relative Truth

There are those who still do not seem to understand what I am teaching concerning relative and absolute truth. For instance, ten people in ten places can take the outdoor temperature and get ten different readings. There seems to be no absolute temperature yet each would be telling the truth.

“Each would be telling the truth”

Not exactly. Each would be telling the truth about his perception, but his perception may be false to some degree. If someone shows me a bottle of beans and asks me to guess the number my guess is a true communication of my best perception, but if I have the wrong number then my perception is wrong.

As in all things it is possible to get to the truth of all things and if I want to test my perception I can count all the beans in the jar and get the correct number.

Let us suppose there are 1482 beans in the jar and ten people guess the different numbers and they are all wrong. The fact that they guessed different numbers does not mean that the 1482 beans is relative. The correct number stayed the same throughout. The perception of the correct number, however, was relative to the talent of the observer, but the correct number did not change.

Now if you add a bean, does this mean that the correct number is relative?

No

The old correct number will be eternally what it was at that point in time and space.

JFK was assassinated November 23, 1963. The fact that there is no assassination occurring today does not nullify the truth that this event occurred at that certain point in time and space. That event will be eternally true and will not change relative to anything.

If there were a cataclysm and all history were lost that still does not nullify the event. It only takes away our perception of the event, which perception can be restored by a retrieval of history.

Truth is always independent of perception making truth absolute, but perception relative. All classifications of truth being relative is, in reality, caused by calling perception truth; whereas that which is perceived is often not true.

The problem in understanding this is amplified by the fact that many teachers present their perceptions as “the truth.” Many enlightened souls rebel at this presentation by stating that this is merely “his truth,” and “my truth” is different.” This is a wrong use of words for instead of using “his truth” the correct use of words would be “his perception.” His perception or your perception may or may not be true.

This is why in all my teachings I advise the seeker to check my words with their own souls because what I am saying may only be my perceptions and could be untrue. The only reliable test of truth is through the windows of your own soul which, unlike us mortals, always perceives truth correctly.

Understanding Truth

Understanding Truth

The Question:

“H. P. Blavatsky and Alice A. Bailey were two controversial teachers who many believe to be in league with the devil. Let us suppose, for the sake of argument, that half of what they teach is not true. If this were the case would it not be better to look for the error so you will not be deceived? OR – is there still an advantage to look for truth as the prime point of focus? If the latter question is true – why is it true?”

A reader makes a good point that it may not be productive to spend time studying material with a low percentage of truth. Even though this may be true, it is also a fact that we often approach new teachings without knowing the percentage of truth therein until we spend some time in study and contemplation.

It does make sense however, to spend your time in the arena where the greatest light lies.

Question: “What is truth? My truth is different than your truth. We progress at different rates so tend to see truths differently than people with greater or lesser understanding. This also means our truths change as we progress..”

It is not the truth that changes, but our perception or our opinion of the truth. The Course in Miracles makes this profound statement.

“The truth is true and nothing else is true.”

In other words, 2+2=4 and nothing else is true. This principle applies to all truth with no exceptions. No exceptions to this principle have ever been presented or will ever be presented for it is impossible to make that which is not true into truth. That which is not true can have the illusion of truth, but that is all.

There is no such thing as relative truth, higher truth, lower truth or ultimate truth. All truth is merely what it is at the present moment in time and space. Some truth may be in the process of unfolding and from this point of view one may say he is seeing “higher truth.”

Principles which are the language of the soul could be called a higher aspect of truth.

I loved Anni’s answer to the current question:

“I would say that when you seek for the truth and find it your soul will confirm it to you. When you listen and seek further you’ll get a new confirmation and if you listen you will find it much easier to discern all the time because your small still voice gets louder and louder.

“If you seek the errors they are not confirmed as being errors. Spirit recognizes truth not errors. So it is much faster to look for truth and get it confirmed than looking for errors and not getting anything confirmed…”

A master could not have spoken better than this. Let me repeat your most significant statement:

“If you seek the errors they are not confirmed as being errors. Spirit recognizes truth not errors.”

That which is not true is error, or in the true reality – NOTHING. If one spends his life looking for nothing what will he find?

Nothing.

Think of your circle of friends and pick one who is critical and always looking for error and red flags. Does he or she have any truth to teach?

If he does it will most likely not have been discovered while looking for error.

Let us reiterate the Principles of Discovery that we have covered so far:

(1) Take the things you know (for reasonable surety) to be true and use them as a foundation or stepping-stones for testing additional truths.

(2) Be willing to let these foundation beliefs be either altered or dropped as some of them are replaced by higher vision.

(3) The teaching should be in harmony with common sense

(4) It should increase the power of Decision and free will.

(5) It should bring you to a new level of awareness and usefulness.

(6) Seek out true sources of knowledge, study and incorporate them into your life. Knowledge dispels error and illusion.

(7) Gather all the reliable information you can about a subject of interest and try and see the principles suggested by the data. Then draw conclusions and run the conclusions by your soul and see if you receive a response.

(8) Follow all the aspects of the Will of God that is within your perception and your sensitivity to the truth will increase.

(9) The Process of Elimination. Eliminate those things that are definitely not true and contemplate on that which remains.

(10) Effective Communication

(A) Communication through perception of the outside world.

(B) Person to person communication.

(C) Communication through the soul.

(11) Truth is in harmony with spiritual principles; therefore we discover that which is true through the application of those principles.

(12) The principle of planting and harvesting.

(13) “The Law of Correspondences.” The principle behind it is “as above so below,” and visa versa.

(14) Take that belief which is embraced by the world and look in the opposite direction. In this opposite direction much truth lies hidden.

(15) Discernment. In particular the disciple should seek the power to discern beyond physical seeing so he can see the difference in effects from the astral/emotional world and the world of the soul.

(16) Seek proven authorities and learn from them.

(17) Put your attention on finding that which is true rather than that which is in error.

Let us now introduce the next principle

(18) Faith in the “Dominating Good,” or a belief that God is good.

Susan in her interesting post has already led us into this next principle without knowing it when she said:

“Fearing to be deceived seemed to keep people around me in so much darkness and boredom I decided to risk it and learn truth from all sources I could get my hands on. I was asked often, aren’t you afraid you will get to heaven and find out you were wrong? I replied that God knows my heart and would know that it was an honest mistake and I would apologize for my error, would be forgiven and would willingly be taught the truth.”

Susan hit on something here that does indeed block many from the truth. That old enemy fear keeps many from moving toward the light of truth.

What do you suppose are the three basic fears that keep sincere people from discovering and accepting new truth?

The question: What is truth?

Answer: Truth is that which IS at any point in time, space or thought. It is sustained by the consciousness of all that is and exists independent of individual consciousness.

For instance, if you perceived a lady was pregnant and then you were to lapse into unconsciousness it would still be true that she is pregnant, even if you are not conscious to perceive the fact.

The moon would still be in the night sky, even if you traveled to Alpha Centauri where it was out of your sight and consciousness.

True perception in relation to law or principles is the correct realization of how the law or principle works itself out. For instance in mathematics using the principle of addition we have 2+2=4 and nothing else is true. This part of the principle of addition does not work itself out in any other way.

Many say that truth is relative, yet no one I have had this conversation with has been able to give me one relative truth. Some point to Newton, yet the truths discovered by Newton were not replaced by Einstein, but added to. Every truth discovered by Newton is still true and has not changed one iota.

The difference between Newton and Einstein is a little like an artist adjusting the grayscale on the computer screen. Let us say that someone gives him a shade of gray for an ad and wants him to match it closely enough so it looks like an exact match. He takes the sample and works at matching it on the computer screen and discovers that 34% grayscale seems to do the trick. He prints up a sample of the matched gray and shows that next to the gray sample to ten people and they all admit that the match is close enough that they cannot tell them apart.

Now what is the absolute truth here? Is it that the match was exact?

No

But it was absolutely true that for all practical purposes the match was close enough that the difference was not perceptible to the human eye. It is absolutely true that the 34% grayscale will work in the ad.

Now let us suppose that one of those ten people happen to be one of those individuals who is very detail minded and takes the two samples of gray and examines then under a microscope and actually counts the number of dots per square inch. He makes what is to him an exciting discovery. After painstakingly counting the dots he finds that the original gray was not 34% but 34.10876% gray and the matching sample was only 34.10679% gray.

He approaches the graphic artist and says: “You did not have a true match. I have discovered that there is a difference in the two grays. That difference is .00197%. Why that’s a couple dots per square inch. Are you going to adjust your gray to make an exact match?”

To this the graphic artist replies: “Not necessary for what is true here is that both the grays look the same to all observers and my match is a true working color that accomplishes the intended purpose.”

Now the guy who made the working match of 34% is like Newton. The 34% is close enough that it would be a waste of time to figure any more exact calibration.

The guy who figured the non perceptible difference of .00197% is like Einstein. He discovered a difference in the grays, but such knowledge was not usable or necessary for any art match in today’s world.

Einstein’s discovery that gravity has subtle changes due to bending space, the addition of energy and speed makes such a small difference in the application of Newton’s laws as to negligible on our planet for most purposes.

Therefore it continues to be absolutely true that we can still use Newton’s laws to send a satellite into a pre-calculated orbit. This was true yesterday, is true today and will be true as long as worlds exist.

Let me repeat. Truth is not relative, but our perception and understanding of what is true is indeed relative and subject to change.

Einstein increased our perception of truth about gravity, time space and other things, but he did not change anything that is true. He obtained a more accurate vision of reality than Newton, but an accurate perception of truth does not change truth.

So in answer to the question: “Isn’t true perception of reality truth? Isn’t truth to be found in perception instead of somewhere else?” I would answer that truth is not found in perception but exists independent of individual perception.

If the lady got pregnant in March and announced to a friend that she is with child, but doesn’t look pregnant her friend may disbelieve that she is pregnant and reject that truth. Then she meets her again in July and notices her swollen belly and now accepts because of her new perception.

The truth is that she was pregnant in both cases and the friend’s change of perception did not change the truth. She was pregnant in March even though the truth was not perceived.

Like I say this is simple stuff. I am sure many feel it is a waste of time that I am covering the obvious here.

If you were able to remove yourself from the world of duality there would be no truth. Truth can only exist when there is more than one of something. Light can only reveal when a shadow is cast. If you are in space and look through millions of miles of the sun’s rays shining through the void, but with no duality of shadow there is only blackness. Truth only exists in duality and perception of truth also exists there. If there were such a thing as a world with no duality there would be no truth for nothing would be there and truth is something.

As far as some absolute truth beyond our understanding why even talk or think about it for it would be beyond our understanding? Why teach a slug about nuclear physics if he can’t understand? What we seek to do here in this course is to teach and discover the next steps in learning for ourselves – steps that all can understand and benefit therefrom.

Alice’s Story

Alice’s Story

Since the discussion has arisen on Alice A. Bailey, I thought I would let her tell her story in her own words. Below is her account of her first meeting with a Master named Koot Hoomi. Later he turned her over to Djwhal Khul to receive the transmissions essential to laying the foundation teachings for the new age.

It was a Sunday morning. The previous Sunday I had heard a sermon which had aroused all my aspiration. This Sunday, for some reason, I had not gone to Church. All the rest of the house-party had gone and there was no one in the house but myself and the servants. I was sitting in the drawing-room reading. The door opened and in walked a tall man dressed in European clothes (very well cut, I remember) but with a turban on his head. He came in and sat down beside me. I was so petrified at the sight of the turban that I could not make a sound or ask what he was doing there. Then he started to talk. He told me there was some work that it was planned that I could do in the world but that it would entail my changing my disposition very considerably; I would have to give up being such an unpleasant little girl and must try and get some measure of self-control. My future usefulness to Him and to the world was dependent upon how I handled myself and the changes I could manage to make. He said that if I could achieve real self-control I could then be trusted and that I would travel all over the world and visit many countries, “doing your Master’s work all the time.” Those words have rung in my ears ever since. He emphasized that it all depended upon me and what I could do and should do immediately. He added that He would be in touch with me at intervals of several years apart.

The interview was very brief. I said nothing but simply listened whilst He talked quite emphatically. Having said what He had come to say, He got up and walked out, after pausing at the door for a minute to give me a look which to this day I remember very distinctly. I did not know what to make of it all. When I had recovered from the shock, I was first frightened and thought I was going insane or had been to sleep and dreaming and then I reacted to a feeling of smug satisfaction. I felt that I was like Joan of Arc (at that time my heroine) and that, like her, I was seeing spiritual visions and was consequently set aside for a great work. What it was I could not imagine, but pictured myself as the dramatic and admired teacher of thousands. This is a very common mistake on the part of beginners and I see a lot of it today in connection with various occult groups. People’s sincerity and aspiration do succeed in bringing them some inner, spiritual contact and they then interpret it in terms of personality success and importance. A reaction of over-stimulation. This reaction was succeeded by one in which the criticism He had made of me became uppermost in my mind. I decided that maybe after all I was not in the class of Joan of Arc but simply some one who could be nicer than I had been and who could begin to control a rather violent temper. This I started to do. I tried not to be so cross and to control my tongue and for some time became so objectionably good that my family got disturbed; they wondered if I was ill and almost begged me to resume my explosive displays. I was smug and sweet and sentimental.

As the years went by I found that at seven years intervals (until I was thirty-five) I had indications of the supervision and interest of this individual. Then in 1915 I discovered who He was and that other people know Him. From then on the relationship has become closer and closer until today I can, at will, contact Him. This willingness to be contacted on the part of a Master is only possible when a disciple is also willing never to avail himself of the opportunity except in moments of real emergency in world service.

I found that this visitor was the Master K. H., the Master Koot Hoomi, a Master Who is very close to the Christ, Who is on the teaching line and Who is an outstanding exponent of the love-wisdom of which the Christ is the full expression. The real value of this experience is not to be found in the fact that I, a young girl called Alice La Trobe-Bateman, had an interview with a Master but in the fact that knowing nothing whatsoever of Their existence, I met one of Them and that He talked with me. The value is to be found also in the fact that everything that He told me came true (after I had tried hard to meet requirements) and because I discovered that He was not the Master Jesus, as I had naturally supposed, but a Master of Whom I could not possibly have heard and one Who was totally unknown to me. Anyway, the Master K. H. is my Master, beloved and real. I have worked for Him ever since I was fifteen years old and I am now one of the senior disciples in His group, or-as it is called esoterically-in His Ashram.

JJ: Thus we see that the Masters she worked with were not a dream or from her subconscious, but individuals residing in physical bodies like ourselves, but with the subtle difference that they are hundreds of years old yet still perpetuate their youth.

I was asked for a definition of metaphysics. Simply put for my use it is physics of the mind. In other words, a scientific approach to thinking and philosophy as opposed to a feeling, often illogical, approach to truth as it exists in many religions. Unfortunately, many religious people believe that a logical approach to the spiritual is misleading or even evil, but as we have shown by the use of the word “faith” in the days of Jesus, that evidence is a key ingredient in the pursuit of truth.
