Paying Kids

Time to give my two cents worth on the assignment. The question: Is it immoral or unproductive to pay kids to read books or to entice people with money to motivate them toward a good end?

The first thing one needs to do to answer this question with wisdom is to rid himself of his bias toward money. There are many who see money as evil or the root of all evil. Interestingly, this includes not only religious people but also non believers.

Money is a neutral energy like gravity, the rays of the sun or the wind. All can be put to destructive or constructive use depending on the intent, direction and intelligence behind them.

Many who see money as evil see it as a corrupting influence in most ways it is used. Some even refuse a high paying job in favor of a low paying one to escape the evils of possessing too much of it.

These people with a bias toward money will see evil in its use in many instances where it can produce good. For instance, a wealthy woman a while back started paying poor women to get their tubes tied so they wouldn’t bring children into a bad situation.

It is interesting that she gained some fierce opposition, not from conservatives but liberals who supported abortion but felt somehow that this approach was just plain wrong. Why? Because money was used as a motivator.

Another interesting case is the idea of paying people to donate their organs on their death. Some consider this a great way to provide a little extra inheritance for their kids. On the other hand, those who see evil in money strongly object to this and preach to us that we should be willing to donate organs of our own free will and not get paid. To get paid for such a thing is wrong they say.

But what makes it wrong? No one gets hurt and many benefit, As it is, we rely on volunteers there is always a shortage. Again, they feel paying for organs is wrong because of their bias toward money. Interestingly, they have no problem with a surgeon making a small fortune transplanting the organs.

Similarly, many of those who are against using money to motivate kids will often have a bias toward money and see it as evil. Therefore, they want to get their kids to do every good deed because they want to, not because they are paid.

To get to the truth of the matter must first rid ourselves of this evil money bias and look at each situation objectively and use the second key of judgment. There are times when paying a child money will create a positive influence and other times when it will not. Each circumstance must be assessed with judgment.

Take myself for example. I had never read a regular book in my life until I was thirteen. Before that, all I read was comic books, which I loved. I just considered regular books boring. What changed me was the accident I had at thirteen that laid me in the hospital for a month. Friends and church members brought me all kinds of books to read. Many of them were religious which didn’t interest me at all at the time.

Finally, someone brought me a book that caught my interest. Even though the cause of the accident was me making a rocket, someone had the gall to bring me a book on rockets.

Normally, I wouldn’t have read even that but I was so bored out of my mind with all that time on my hands that I decided to read it from cover to cover. When finished I not only had a great sense of achievement but discovered that I really enjoyed regular reading. I was hooked on books from that moment on. My only regret was that I didn’t get started earlier.

Actually, getting me sated earlier would have been easy to do. If one of my parents had given me an interesting book at the age of ten and given me $5 to read it all I would have done it and made the discovery earlier.

A kid who is a true seeker at heart would not have to be paid to read every book for once he gets started he will read a lot of his own free will. Like me he may need something to jump start him to get him going.

How about the kid who is not a seeker but just wants to get by? He may need more than a jump start. Maybe paying him whatever it takes to read a dozen books will make him realize the value of books. I wouldn’t recommend paying any kid forever to read books but if he doesn’t read much in the present the motivation of money may be just enough to direct the kid toward a new habit.

I’m a big believer in teaching kids the value of money and believe that it helps children to pay them for work that goes beyond mild chores. When a kid asks for extra money, instead of just giving it to them say, “I just happen to have a job for you so you can earn that extra money.

Each child is different so the parent will just have to do some experimenting to discover what will motivate him. I know that when me and my friend Wayne were growing up together we were motivated to do almost anything to earn a few extra dollars spending money. We would have gone to school dressed as dancing girls if someone would have paid us enough.

Marriage Equality

Good logical post Rob. I wish more gays would present their case as you do.

You say: “I wanted to add my thoughts on this topic, but also because I haven’t seen my opinions heard elsewhere.”

Actually what I have written is pretty close. I have previously stated that the answer to the marriage/gay problem was to get the State out of the marriage business and create a plan of legal contracts for all. Then each group can call and define marriage however they want.

You did come up with a point I have not heard before – that the state’s involvement in marriage is unconstitutional. A case can be made for this if marriage is determined to be a religious institution. On the other hand, if it is defined as a civil one then it would be Constitutional. I suppose the case could be made that many are married by a judge in a courtroom wit no religion involved at all.

Re: Paying Kids

To Dean, I read through your post carefully and can’t find any point that you have made that made any sense in proving anything I said wrong. All you are saying is, “JJ, you are wrong and research proves it.”

It would be helpful if you actually quote a point I made and then quote the research which is supposed to refute it.

Yes, it is quite obvious that continuing to pay students to develop a love of a thing will not increase or decrease the love of that thing. I have said nothing contrary to this.

I did say this. That had I been paid years earlier to read a book I would have discovered earlier the rewards of reading and would have had several years head start beyond that which happened. As it was, I still required incentive to develop a love of reading – boredom. Boredom forced me toward my discovery of the benefits or reading, but money could have done the same thing.

My point in my post is that judgment is they key to using money as an incentive and that is a point not covered in ANY research. Research generally uses black and white parameters with little or no judgment involved.

For instance, good judgment would indicate that money would not be much incentive to read books for a kid that already loves to read. On the other hand, good judgment in the use of money can help even a good reader to increase their knowledge.

Let’s suppose the kid has a part time job to earn money for something important in his life. The kid mentions to the parent that he wishes he had more time to read books, but his job seems to take most it.

The parent sees the value of the kids desire for knowledge and replies, “I’ll tell you what. If you will indeed spend your spare time in reading you can quit your job and I’ll pay you to read instead. How does that sound?”

The kid is thrilled and is much happier to get paid for reading than dreary work. It’s a win win in his book.

Money is an incentive to any chosen action, but it is not an incentive to create love. It can push in a direction so you can discover something you love or provide the free time so you can do what you love.

How you can so cantankerously disagree with me on this with absolutely no evidence is a mystery. You seem to be disagreeing just to be disagreeable as of late.

Re: Paying Kids

Dean: Your overall reply you are basically saying that paying kids to read is good because it gets them interested in books that it’s beneficial that was your argument you were making yes?

JJ No. That’s not what I was saying. I was saying that if one uses good judgment in providing incentive through the use of money the results can be positive. If good judgment is not used the results can be mixed or negative.

Dean I was saying that it’s not good because by paying them to read that adds an extra incentive factor into the mix, that interferes with the natural incentive (called intrinsic incentive) needed to fulfill certain ambitions that is to do with self esteem and satisfaction of obtaining a self set goal (that cannot be brought and monetary rewards only interferes with that process)

JJ Concerning some black and white program with no judgment involved such as paying kids a set amount to read books I don’t see the results as 100% bad the way you seem to but mixed.

The bad is that the kid is not relying on his own incentive and if the program continues too long he may not read much unless he has outside incentive.

The good is that he reads books he otherwise would not have read and will have the knowledge in his head the rest of his life. In some cases the habit of reading will grow into a love of reading that will continue with him when the payments cease.

Dean: So that is the point of research that can be verified, I suppose you want me to get quotes from specific journals then? This is not an essay I’m just telling you what I know of the research on that incentive theory. But if you cannot understand my point there is no way you would find the research on it even if I pointed the direct quote you still wouldn’t get it.

JJ You do not provide enough information about the research for us to even make a judgment on it.

Dean: Initially the debate or subject was about paying kids to read and if that’s beneficial to their achievement of learning. That was the context and subject matter. The judgment of that is through discerning which is more productive lol. And the research says it’s best not to pay them. So the best judgment to have about it, is to not pay them to read books as an incentive.

JJ You’re being black and white here, allowing no room for judgment. Suppose we applied this reasoning to a study that says that kids who watch TV are not as smart as those who do not watch it. By your reasoning then kids should never watch TV.

On the other hand, a parent with good judgment can guide the kid to watching programs that will stimulate his learning that will be missed by the kid with no TV.

You are wrong to say point blank that money cannot be used as a good incentive to read if good judgment is used. As I said, if my parents had promised me $10 to read a book at the age of ten I think that would have been a great help.

Dean: But you have gone back to “it’s a judgment”, as your point. And my point is that the theory established on it already says paying them to read is not productive to their well being.

So you are trying to bypass the incentive theory here and ignore the research, by making your own logic up on it again.

JJ I’m not bypassing it but speaking from the wholeness viewpoint on the overall principle of being motivated by money. Any incentive theory is just part of the principle involved.

Dean But this is completely different to our initial issue and you have thrown a totally different condition in there now. You are adding variables into the subject that we have not even discussed.

JJ That is what I do here. If you want a teacher that follows black and white protocol and is 100% predictable you are in the wrong place. Follow what I say and comment on my actual words and you will be less discombobulated.

Dean; Here is a parable that might further help explain. A baker tells an apprentice I will teach you how to bake a cake, so that you can become a really good baker and the worlds best cake maker. The student agrees. But every time the student does well the baker announces that I am the teacher am to get another medal this month, for teaching this student how to bake more to my standard and this re-affirms my teaching ability to even teach an ordinary person such skill

Eventually the student becomes the second best baker in the world. And the teacher says to him. Now look what you have achieved. You have become the second best baker in the world, But not the best, because I taught you everything you know and got you through it all and encouraged you all the way, and all the work you did, was cause I was teaching you. How does the apprentice feel about that? The apprentice feels robbed of his ambition and self initiative, his independence of the task at hand, the credit has gone to something else, in this instance the bakers ability to teach.

This is the same metaphor, for as paying the student to read, because by the time the student learns or appreciates the value in it, he’s going to be left with the fact that he was paid, to do so. And this is an assault to their goal setting initiative and overall capability at the task at hand.

JJ Your comparison makes no sense and the parable itself makes little sense. First, if I had a teacher that wanted to take more credit than he deserved or was just feeding his ego with my success I’d tell him where to go. I’d neither give him glory neither would I allow him to take away any of mine. He would in no way interfere with me basking in the gory of my own accomplishments with or without him.

Then linking money to the teacher doesn’t correspond much. Money has been partially responsible for a lot of things I have done in my life, from going to college to learning a number of valuable skills. I don’t go around moping “I am unworthy” because money is involved.

Re: Paying Kids

Larry writes: You know what I think? I think JJ was exactly right that many people have an emotional blind spot about money. I think you are one of them. You show every symptom of judging anything as bad if it involves money.

I think you are correct. This statement by dean illustrates his money–is-evil mindset

Dean: Why would it have been such a good help? Because you base your life around monetary gain and not what you should be doing? I don’t think it would have helped you much in the long run to be honest. I think it’s just a misuse of money and it teaches bad habits by sending a message that you are not capable so we must pay you to be capable of doing what you should be doing. That’s the only message you get out of that arrangement.

JJ He’s certainly got me wrong. My life is not built around monetary gain and there are many things that money cannot buy from me, but if someone offered me $1000 to read a book I would probably do it, for there would be no harm and I might learn something.

Soap

Rick: Back in those days, many parents still believed in the old saying, “Spare the rod, spoil the child”, so, ouch, I do have a few memories of harsh spankings and getting my mouth washed out with soap.

JJ For some reason the image conjured up in my mind of Rick having his mouth washed out with soap was amusing as the dickens, though I’m sure Rick didn’t see the humor at the time.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

One More Time

I had wanted to leave this convoluted conversation paying kids to read, but on reflection I thought I would make another post – in the hope of presenting some clarification.

Let me recap the history.

I posted a video by Michael Sandel who supports the theory that paying kids to read books has negative results and asked the group what they thought.

After the group response I posted my overall view which was basically this. Money can be used as in incentive for almost anything and in some cases the results will be positive and in others negative. One must use good judgment on a case-by-case basis if he wants positive results.

For some reason my answer inflamed Dean who not only thought this was totally wrong but accused me of changing the subject.

I think the key to Dean’s thinking here is to look at why he accuses me of changing the subject and here is my conclusion.

I think that Dean was wanting me to give a black and white answer that didn’t involve the concept of judgment. He wanted me to either say paying kids to read is 100% a good thing of 100% a bad thing. He didn’t want me to give any answer that was in between the extremes.

The reason, I see as twofold.

(1) Of late he is bent on proving me to be wrong and if I gave a black-and-white-paying-kids-to-read-is-good answer then he felt he had the necessary ammunition to go after me.

(2) He sees money as evil, except for buying necessities, and if the case is made that paying kids to read is sometimes helpful then this goes against his mindset and cannot be accepted.

So the problem boils down to this. Dean wanted to argue on black and white letter of the law turf and not on anything involving judgment or exceptions. Even if I had said that paying kids to read was bad 90% of the time and good 10% of the time he would have been upset and attacked me over the 10%, as if I had said 100%. That’s the way black and white thinking works. Even a 1% exception is like 100% to them. I am 100% wrong in his mind, case closed.

The result of a mind using judgment arguing with a mind using the black and white mode is almost always misunderstanding. I have understood Dean, but he doesn’t understand me. For instance, he thinks I disagree with the research he presents. The truth is nothing I have said conflicts with his expert which says this:

“that reward can actually stifle intrinsic pleasure in learning- a prediction largely supported by available data.”

I agree with this 100%. Reward “can” stifle pleasure. Notice the use of the word “can.” This means it does not always do this but can have that effect at times. In other words, it would take judgment to see the difference and guide the outcome to success.

This is the same principle as rewarding the poor with money and food stamps. This can stifle them from achieving success, but not always. For some it will help them to survive until they can take care of themselves.

The bottom line of the whole situation here is that Dean is not arguing with me but a straw man as we basically agree on the core principle. I just do not go along with the idea that paying a kid to read is flatly 100% bad or that paying money to create incentive is 100% evil. Each situation requires some judgment.

The First Stage of Discipleship, Part 1

Rev 2:4-5 in The Unveiling

Duke was talking about the part of my book that covers the first stage of the path of the seeker after he discovers the Christ within. Since this is an important step I thought I would post the section covering this. This will be in two installments. Here is the first.

Ephesus: Gaining Permission Let us look at the first set of instructions:

“Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;” Rev 2:1

Ephesus basically means “given permission.” Why is permission an important word as the seeker begins his path to discipleship? It is indeed of extreme importance, much more than has been realized in the past. Throughout his long struggle the pilgrim has only acted when given permission from some earthly authority. That authority may be a priest, prophet, king, teacher, book, belief system, political party, group etc. Because the average person can only act under the permission of earthly authorities the inner voice is muffled. Why? Because the inner voice gives permission that overrides all outer authorities. A great problem then arises when the inner voice is recognized. The authority of the inner voice conflicts with the authority of the outer. Which is the seeker to follow? At first he has many fears of defying the outer authorities and hesitates. Later, after he takes the initial plunge, he goes to the other extreme and defies all authority almost mindlessly. He makes many mistakes until he learns the true lessons of harmonizing the inner voice with the outer world. To help the seeker put things in perspective he is told that the voice holds “the seven stars in his right hand, (and) walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks.” The seeker is reminded that he is only lighting the first candlestick on the path to discipleship. He has six more great obstacles to hurdle and six more teachers and belief systems to transcend before he becomes a disciple. He must eventually realize that all seven stages are under the guidance of the inner Christ. Even though there are many perils, the path is a part of a grand design.

Praise from the Master’s Voice “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:” Rev 2:2

Nothing can be hidden from the inner God. He knows all thoughts and intents of the heart. The works of the newly aspiring disciple are seen and known. Three things are known about the aspirant by the Observer within: (1) His works Working for a spiritual ideal that goes beyond serving the lower self must take place before the seeker begins to tread the path of liberation. If a person thinks he is on the path but has no works, then he only has passing interest and has not yet gotten serious about moving forward. Nothing important happens, even for the spiritual seeker until actual work is done. The pilgrim will try every avenue possible to avoid work and take shortcuts until, after lifetimes of frustration, he finally realizes that there is much work to do and he must do his part. (2) Labor It would seem that there is not much difference between labor and work until we examine the Greek and realize that this is an incomplete translation. The word used for labor is KOPOS, which is more accurately translated as “strenuous and painstaking labor.” When the seeker begins a work he often thinks it will be painless and fun. He begins with an attitude that he is going to have a good time as he proceeds in the work. Even though there are always good times to be had (and one should make the best of all situations) all is not fun and games in the spiritual work. It is not long before storm clouds arise and troubles come. That which seemed to be easy becomes difficult and that which was fun becomes tedious and challenging. (3) Patience/Endurance Patience comes from the Greek HUPOMONE; “endurance”, or more specifically “steadfast endurance”, is a more accurate translation. This translation makes more sense and adds depth to the work of the aspirant. Many times the seeker begins an unselfish work but then quits after a few obstacles get in the way. When it looks as if the work will not bring immediate results he loses faith. Finally, after numerous cycles of labor and quitting he realizes that he must attain the added quality of endurance, an endurance that can carry the seeker through pain, grief and disappointment until results are obtained. He must obtain a living witness of the words of the Master: “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Matt 24:13 He who endures until the work is done takes the first step in his own salvation or deliverance. Notice that the seeker is being praised for having achieved these three qualities in the first stage of discipleship, but the voice of the Master does not stop there. He gives additional praise: “thou canst not bear them which are evil.” This is awkward to interpret in isolation. Many people have different definitions of what is “evil.” We are clearly told though that the aspiring disciple does not embrace that which he sees as evil or destructive, but is repulsed by it. Apparently, he sees true evil, for the inner voice acknowledges his intolerance as a good thing. The next part of the verse identifies a particular evil that must be confronted: “and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars.” A particular evil faced by the aspiring disciple are those who say they are apostles and are not. Who are such people? The word “apostle” is generally linked with the twelve disciples of Jesus, but many people surfaced with the claim of being the true successors of the original twelve or apostles in their own right. “Apostle” comes from the Greek APOSTOLOS and means “one sent forth with orders.” This implies that such a person has strong external authority. Now let us look again with whom the aspirant is dealing. These are they “which SAY they are apostles.” In other words, as the seeker begins the path of liberation one of the first great evils he must confront and overcome are those who seek authority over him to give him marching orders. Where do they get their authority? They only seem to have it because they (or their followers) “say” so. In order to make his first step of granting himself “permission” to listen to the inner voice, he must free himself from false unearned outer authorities. But note that he does not mindlessly reject an outer authority just because it is there and attempting to instruct or order him about. What does he do? The Master gives him praise for testing such people, and John himself, in another scripture, talks about the importance of such tests:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” I John 4:1

Now the question arises as to how the seeker is to test such people. The next verse seems to give a simplistic answer:

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” I John 4:2-3

So is that all there is to the test? If they confess that Jesus came in the flesh then we know they are of God, right? Not quite. First we know this is not correct based on observation alone. Many tyrants and people of great evil have confessed the coming of Jesus. Cortez and other Conquistadors confessed the coming of Jesus in the flesh and forced thousands of Native Americans to also make such a confession or die. If this common interpretation is not correct, then what is? To understand, let us examine the verse more carefully. The key to the meaning is found in the phrase: “Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.” We covered in the beginning of this treatise that the name Jesus Christ means “anointed to deliver”, and applies not only to the Master in Galilee, but to all who successfully follow in his footsteps and seek to assist those who tread the path of deliverance. “Is come” is from the Greek ERCHOMAI and is the middle voice of a primary verb used only in the present and imperfect tenses. Here it is used in the imperfect tense which implies a thing that is in the state of progress or happening in the now, whenever that now is occurring. If we take this into consideration, then what is the verse really telling us? Who are those that pass the test? The orthodox version reads: “Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God.” A more accurate rendering as far as the meaning is concerned would be:

Everyone who confesses in spirit that (the name of) Jesus Christ is manifesting in (their own) flesh is of God.

This agrees with another scripture written by John:

“And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.” Rev 14:1

The name given of the Father is Jesus Christ and is written in the minds and hearts of all true followers. What then is the test of the true apostle? The seeker must search him out and discover this one thing: does he see himself as a representative of Jesus Christ in a way that you are not or could not be if you so chose? Or does he see you and himself as equals in the opportunity of manifesting the Christ within our fleshly tabernacles? Does he allow you to speak the words of your innermost soul and allow you to follow them without trying to place his outer authority over you, above your own inner authority? If he respects your inner voice as he does his own, and if he allows you to manifest Christ with the same authority that he does for himself, then he is of God. But if he seeks authority over you for the sake of glorifying his ego, then he is not of God – no matter what words of support he gives to Jesus. The seeker at this stage is thus praised by the Master’s voice. He has seen the deceit behind those who sought to control and direct him toward their own ideal rather than that of the inner Christ. The next verse reads:

“And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.” Rev 2:3

This reinforces the praise for the seeker’s endurance. Endurance is reiterated because successful endurance in keeping the mind steady on the Inner Light is much rarer than the performance of a labor. Many labor for a while and give up in the heat of the day, but those who have securely entered the path of liberation must be able to “endure all things” and continue until the work manifests the desired fruit – even if that end seems far away.

Freedom Without Responsibility The Master follows the praise with some criticism:

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Rev 2:4-5

Scholars are somewhat mystified as to what was the “first love” of the church at Ephesus. Some think that it was the original enthusiasm, brotherhood or ideals of the members that just wore off and they were being admonished to get themselves recharged. A closer examination will reveal that this was not the problem. To understand what the first love is we need to return to the key word which is “permission.” As written earlier, the first real step toward enlightenment and movement on the path occur when the seeker gives himself permission to follow his internal authority rather than the outward. To discover the first love we must ask ourselves what the seeker was attracted to that caused him to take the steps to find the path in the first place – before he followed his internal self. In other words, what virtue did he have before he was enlightened that made him move toward Spirit to begin with? The answer leads us to his first love. Before he was ruled by internal permission, his life was governed by external authorities who gave him permission. These external authorities were seen as representing the voice of God. As such, the seeker took these outer commands and instructions very seriously. He felt that if he disobeyed the prophet, priest, guru or book it was the same thing as disobeying God. He was thus very assiduous about honoring that voice and being a good servant for God, as he understood the concept. This was his first love. Then, at the start of his new journey, he discovered that the authorities representing the voice of God knew no more about the truth than he did – that his internal voice was what he needed to follow. The problem is that there are two internal voices. One is the voice of the Spirit and the other is the voice of the lower self, expressing lower desire. When the seeker first begins his journey on the path it is true that he does indeed contact the real voice, but neither is he perfect nor has he overcome selfishness. The lower voice is much easier to hear and requires no meditation or concentration of attention to get its message. Thus, when the aspirant begins his spiritual journey, he hears the lower voice much more than he hears the higher. In the past he had some protection from following the lower nature because he followed his “first love,” his teachers and the voice of God they represented. Despite their faults, these outer authorities admonished him to exercise self-control over his passions and lower nature. They encouraged him to have self-discipline. When the seeker discovers his inner authority and gives himself permission to ignore the outer, he (for a period of time) goes from one extreme to the other. He goes from obeying every external word that seems to come from God to ignoring all he has learned in the past. What does he do now? Now that he has released himself from outer authority he follows the inner, but the trouble is that the spiritual voice does not lay down the law in detail, as did the outer. If he has a decision to make and does not receive clear instruction from the Spirit, he falls back on lower desire. When he makes this mistake he is left with a choice between lower desire and outer authorities BUT he has rejected outer authorities, so in all areas where he has no clear communication through the soul (or perhaps ignores that communication), he is left with following lower desire. The net effect of this situation can be summarized as follows:

(1) The seeker makes the breakthrough and clearly hears and follows the still small voice. (2) He releases himself from the bondage of outer authorities. (3) He feels free and this freedom seems to be what enlightenment is all about. He now goes overboard and follows every desire that comes to him, ignoring the discipline he learned in the past.

This explains a popular criticism that many who consider themselves “enlightened” receive from the rank and file religious people. With some justification they will accuse them of being carnal, undisciplined, licentious, rebellious, etc. The seeker will often laugh such criticism off as being somewhat primitive and unenlightened, and continue to follow any impulse that feels good to him. This takes him away from the soul for a period of time. He will find that he will need a wake-up call from the Master’s voice to set him back on track. In a moment of sanity, when he sees that the lower impulses lead to disaster after disaster, he hears the higher voice:

“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”

Upon hearing this message he realizes that he has discarded many principles from his past that harmonize with the voice of the Spirit. He has merely used his new freedom as an excuse to follow his lower nature. He sees that if he continues on the current course he will lose contact with the true inner voice and the light (candlestick) will no longer shine within. He must “repent,” or change course. He must honor those things from the past which were good and lead him toward Spirit, and follow the voice of the soul to yet higher realms of understanding.

The First Stage of Discipleship, Part 2

The Nicolaitans

“But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” Rev 2:6

The voice of the Master gives another word of praise, and a somewhat odd one at that. The disciple is complimented for hating the same thing that God hates. But wait! We are not supposed to hate anything, are we? And yet a voice representing Christ or God speaks of his own hate. Now one could argue that Christ would never hate and perhaps this is merely John’s interpretation of the mind of God, putting a thought of God in language to which the seeker can relate. Yes, it may be true that in the higher spiritual spheres hate may not exist and the reason is that it is not a necessary means of communication there; but when any intelligence, whether man or god, descends to the earthly sphere, the language of emotion applies to all. I think, then, we can agree that the voice of God clearly states that it disapproves of the Nicolaitans in a way that we would interpret as hate – that is, if such a God were a human being speaking with us. So what is it about the Nicolaitans that cause the emotion of hate to come not only from the aspirant, but from the voice of God itself? Scholars have difficulty with this because there is little written about this group. Most of them, however, believe they were either founded or inspired by the disciple Nicolas who is mentioned once in the Bible. In Acts 6:5 his name is given as one of seven called to assist the Twelve Apostles. It is thought by some that he apostatized from the teachings of Christ and must have started a reprobate group after his name. Actually, the few writings we have from the early church fathers tell a different story. Here is an interesting account recorded by Eusebius giving a story told by Clement of Alexandria about Nicolas:

This man (Nicolaus), it is said, had a young and lovely wife. And when he was reproached by the apostles, after the ascension of the Saviour, for jealousy, he brought her into their midst and bade anyone marry her who wished. For this action, it is said, was in accordance with that saying (of his),

One ought to abuse the flesh;’ and, as a matter of fact, the members of his sect have followed both example and precept absolutely and without question, and commit fornication freely. But for my part, I understand that Nicolaus had intercourse with no woman except his wife; and that, as regards his children, the daughters grew old in a state of virginity, while his son preserved his chastity. Such being the case, when he brought the wife, whom he jealously loved, publicly into the midst of the apostles, it was to renounce his passion; and it was self-control, in the face of pleasures men eagerly seek, that taught him to say

abuse the flesh.’ For, I imagine, in accordance with the Saviour’s command, he did not wish to serve two masters, pleasure and the Lord.

The Nicolaitans then pursued the unrestricted license to pleasure and gratification in food, sex or whatever they fancied. To justify their actions they cited the story of Nicolas and his willingness to give up his wife to marry, or pleasure, any who wanted her. Since no one condemned him for this, then they reasoned it must be okay to share sexual favors, have group sex or whatever. The interesting thing is the Nicolaitans confiscated the name of a man who was doing his best to control passion and corrupted his teaching to give them license to have no self-control whatever. In the above quote we are told that in deed Nicolas was a very ascetic man who believed in sexual purity. He only had sex with his wife and his children were virgins and chaste. So it turns out that those who used his name to promote their doctrine of licentiousness were claiming to be followers of Nicolas, but were not. Indeed they were the opposite of Nicolas, or anti-Nicolas. This point sounds familiar, does it not? It does indeed when we go back a couple verses to these words spoken to Ephesus:

“thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars.” Rev 2:2

This makes sense when we realize that the true seeker cannot bear false apostles, but neither can he tolerate those who falsely use the name of Nicolas, an assistant to the apostles. While it is true that the Master doesn’t approve of either extreme – asceticism or promiscuity – neither was offensive enough for him to use the word hate. Jesus did not show hate toward the prostitutes of his time. What offends the Spirit much more than indulging in the pleasures of the flesh is taking the teachings of a just man, corrupting them, and leading the people in the opposite direction. We are told that this happened with false apostles, and that there are those who corrupt the teachings of Christ and are antichrist. Finally, there are those who corrupt teachings of lesser saints such as Nicolas and hypocritically use his name. Another hint as to what is so disturbing to the voice of the Spirit is found in the name itself. Nicolaitans, derived from Nicolas, comes from two Greek words. The first is NIKAN, which means “victory or conquest.” The second is LAOS, which means “the people.” This implies one who is such a powerful personality or of such powerful authority that he dominates the people. Common people can easily accept the word of a powerful leader above their own inner voice. It is quite possible then that the meaning of the name of the Nicolaitans reveals that God is disgusted with the fact that men often set themselves up as an authority over the people and in doing so claim to be spokesmen for God. This causes them to replace the inner voice of God among the people with their own voice and ideas, thus deceiving the people out of their own inner contact and free will. We can conclude we are on the right track in identifying the things that God hates because they are the same two things that Jesus hated, which were:

(1) Those who were in charge of the temple claimed to be the rightful heirs to administering its services. Instead of keeping with the original intent set forth by Moses, David and Solomon, they corrupted it to their own ends. Jesus hated this and called them a “den of thieves” and made a whip and chased them out. (2) Jesus hated the hypocrisy of the leaders who would not let the people think for themselves. These leaders claimed to speak for God and that they should be followed without question.

To them Jesus said:

“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.” Matt 23:13-14

Jesus never expressed disgust toward the typical sinner, but had compassion toward them. But he did express very negative feelings toward unjust leaders. The hate expressed by the voice of the Master toward the Nicolaitans was merely a reiteration of the disgust Jesus had toward the leaders in his day. It makes sense that the aspiring disciple, who has gained a sense of spiritual freedom, would hate the doctrine of the Nicolaitans who would seek to corrupt past teachings and force followers to conform to that corruption. It is interesting that misplaced hate still runs rampant in the churches today. They will tolerate that which God hates – corruption and unjust authority – while hating any type of sexual talk or indiscretion. Promiscuity is not the way of the disciple, but it is a much lesser wrong than that which is committed by those who seek to control the minds of men and take away their free agency.

The Spiritual Connection

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Rev 2:7

The Spirit gives an important message to the seven churches, or seven groups of aspiring disciples. The message is one of extreme importance: “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” The first thing to note is that one must “overcome” to partake of the tree of life. So many spiritual teachers are promising shortcuts and an easy path if we just follow them, but there is no shortcut for anything worth having. Instead, the seeker must make a strenuous effort to achieve the goal. It is interesting that Jesus compared himself to a vine connected to a tree, which gives life:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” John 15:4-8

The idea presented here by the Master is a branch needs to be connected to a vine to stay alive. If it is not connected it does not receive the life-giving fluid and becomes “withered” and dies. Even so, the comparison fits the aspiring disciple. He connects with soul energy and feels spiritually alive more than any other time in his history. The problem is that he will often abuse the feeling of freedom that comes with this new life and, for a period of time, he will sever himself from the vine. When this happens he will be lead by the lower desire energies and his spiritual life will wither and die. He must awaken to his terrible situation and reconnect to the spiritual flow so he can continue his journey upon the path. The tree of life is “in the midst of the paradise of God.” True paradise is found in the center of our own being where the voice of God speaks to us. The seeker must center himself in the light at the core of his being so he can connect to the spiritual flow. Yes, we can die and go to paradise, but first we must live and go there. Just as there are many leaves, branches, limbs, and larger limbs in a tree, even so are there many states of consciousness to be attained after a permanent link is established.

The Ray of Ephesus Ephesus represents stage one for the seeker after the birth of Christ occurs in the heart. He or she uses the power of Ray Three to discern the true from the false. This represents the aspect of light and is called The Ray of Active Intelligence. In Ephesus the aspirant learns to use the light and active intelligence of Ray Three to discern the false teachers, break off from them and begin a journey on the great path of liberation.

The Fall of the Old

Keith: The only difference I have with J.J. is he believes this new age can be salvaged from the best of the old. I believe this present age has crystallized to the point where its destruction will be a blessing in disguise going forward.

JJ There is no difference of opinion that the present system will fall and a new one will be built. The concern I have is how it will happen. If we do nothing and just let things happen then the system will fall and the chances are a great tyranny will surface along with tremendous suffering during and after the fall. This is what I want to avoid.

To avoid this we need to build a bridge between the two systems where a new system based on freedom is being created as the old systems are falling. Then when the fall is complete we can have the foundation of freedom created for the new.

Nov 8, 2012 Winners and Looses

The election is over and we have winners and losers and yes, Barack Obama won reelection, but not all were winners. Let us take a look:

Winners; People who want more free stuff. Losers: Those who have to pay for the free stuff.

Winners (in their illusionary reality): Those who think government can borrow increasing amounts of money forever so they can have free stuff. Losers: Those who realize economic recklessness will bring a day of reckoning.

Winners: Those who want less freedom for others. Losers: Those who want more freedom for all.

Winners: Those who want larger more intrusive government Losers: Those who want smaller and efficient government

Winners: Those who still want to blame Bush for our depressed economy. Losers; Those who have a sense of personal responsibility.

Winners: Those who want the price of fuel to skyrocket so we will be forced to rely on wind and solar. Losers: Those who are struggling to pay for gas for their cars and fuel for their homes.

Winners: Those who want to dismantle the military. Losers: Those who believe we need a strong defense and a missile defense to prevent desolation for the planet.

The Coming Collapse

Mary Ellen writes:

Exactly how do we go about doing this (the coming collapse)? What should we be doing to build this bridge you refer to?

I am still reeling with disbelief. I haven’t read the Keys comments til today and I was so hoping for something optimistic……..esp. from JJ, but all the comments and thoughts are of doom and gloom. I hope I am NOT alive when this great fall happens. I know it’s happening and has been for some time now but BO’s win just sealed the deal.

JJ First, it is important to not fear the future. I remember way back in the Seventies a lot of people thought a collapse was coming soon. Many thought that the book 1984 did not pick that year by accident but it was the target date for the beast to control the world. Almost all conspiracy watchers at that time thought for sure there would be a collapse before the Eighties were through.

Well, we made it through and on hindsight spending a lot of time worrying would have been a waste of time.

It is true that we have never had a president like Obama and there is a chance of a collapse but this is not a sure thing. Chances are we will weather any hard times ahead and in the meantime life will be much easier if we do not worry about what we cannot change and make the best of life in the present.

I always go by my inner feelings as to whether I should worry about a thing. Right now the only troubling vibes I pick up concerns a couple of my kids. There is not anything I can do in the immediate future to change the world so I am not wasting time being troubled by it.

As I’ve said before the main preparation the lights can make for the distress to come is to create a gathering place that can serve as a place of refuge. Unfortunately, right now we do not have enough willing participants to even start creating such a place. Before that happens many thousand, perhaps millions will need to be exposed to the teachings.

Who Should Vote?

There’s been some interesting discussion lately about whether certain people should be denied the vote. For instance, should people on welfare be allowed to vote, which vote may result in raising taxes on those who are paying for the welfare?

First, I might mention this discussion is academic for the present because there is not much of a chance that any politician will recommend limiting the vote on anyone. If anything they will try to get more people voting including illegal aliens.

Even so the time will come that we will have opportunities to build more perfect societies so it is always good to discuss these things.

The core principle to consider is this. It is wrong that one who is not paying taxes has the power to dictate in any way how many taxes others should pay. It is the taxpayers themselves who should determine how much they want to give. Anything else leads to thievery.

Let us give a example. There are three homeless guys and a producer with a nice home and lots of cash. Now if the producer decides he wants to give some of his money to help the homeless guys, this is well and good. He will secure treasure in heaven, according to Jesus.

But let us suppose the three homeless dudes force their way into his home and declare that they have just been given the right to vote how much of the producers money and property they can take. First they vote three to one that they can now live in the guy’s house. Next they vote on how much of the producer’s cash they can take. The producer says he’ll give then 10% but the majority of three vote to distribute 80%.

That doesn’t seem very fair does it? But that is what happens in our society when those who do not produce are given power to vote themselves money made by the producers.

On the other hand, the non producers participate in society in many other ways besides making money and other things besides money effect them. There are quite a few factors in society that many non producers should be able to have a say about.

Therefore, here is what I recommend. An elected body should not do the raising of taxes. They can recommend it, but should not be given power to actually raise them. Before taxes can be raised there should first be a referendum voted on by he actual taxpayers. If income taxes are to be raised then only those who will be affected and have to pay more should be allowed to vote on the issue.

On the other hand, a sales tax usually applies to all and in this case all citizens should vote.

If property taxes are to be raised then only property owners should be allowed to vote for they are the ones who will be affected.

If Congress wants a tariff increase that will not cost citizens any cash outlay then Congress can make this type of decision.

If this basic rule is followed then taxes will never be too high. But humans are basically generous in nature and most are willing to pay what is fair.

Lastly, even though Ramtha loves Obama he is predicting he will be the last president. He calls him the fulfillment of the “Black Pope” prophecy. On the other hand, he predicted numerous times Bush would also be the last president so I do not see much earned authority here.

Dangers of Trust

Here is a great example of what can happen to a people who give too much trust to their leaders and their enemies:

On his return he held up before the Senate a bundle of fresh figs that he had plucked in Carthage three days before, as an ominous symbol of her prosperity and her nearness to Rome; and he predicted that if Carthage were left unchecked, she would soon be rich and strong enough to renew the struggle for the mastery of the Mediterranean. From that day, with characteristic pertinacity, he ended all his speeches in the Senate, on whatever subject, with his dour conviction: Ceterum censeo delendam esse Carthaginem – “Besides, I think that Carthage must be destroyed.” The imperialists in the Senate agreed with him, not so much because they coveted Carthage’s trade, as because they saw in the well-irrigated fields of north Africa a new investment for their money, new latifundia to be tilled by new slaves. They awaited eagerly a pretext for the Third Punic War.

Their cue came from the most extraordinary ruler of his time. Masinissa, King of Numidia, lived ninety years (238-148), begot a son at eighty-six, and by a vigorous regimen kept his health and strength almost to the end. He organized his nomad people into a settled agricultural society and a disciplined state, ruled them ably for sixty years, adorned Cirta, his capital, with lordly architecture, and left as his tomb the great pyramid that still stands near the town of Constantine, in Tunisia. Having won the friendship of Rome, and knowing the political weakness of Carthage, he repeatedly raided and appropriated Carthaginian terrain, took Great Leptis and other cities, and finally controlled all land approaches to the harassed metropolis. Bound by treaty to make no war without Rome’s consent, Carthage sent ambassadors to the Senate to protest against Masinissa’s encroachments. The Senate reminded them that all Phoenicians were interlopers in Africa and had no rights there which any well-armed nation was obliged to respect. When Carthage paid the last of her fifty annual indemnities of 200 talents to Rome, she felt herself released from the treaty signed after Zama. In 151 she declared war against Numidia, and a year later Rome declared war against her. The latter declaration, and the news that the Roman fleet had already sailed for Africa, reached Carthage at the same time. The ancient city, however rich in population and trade, was quite unprepared for a major war. She had a small army, a smaller navy, no mercenaries, no allies. Rome controlled the sea. Utica therefore declared for Rome, and Masinissa blocked all egress from Carthage to the hinterland. An embassy hastened to Rome with authority to meet all demands. The Senate promised that if Carthage would turn over to the Roman consuls in Sicily 300 children of the noblest families as hostages, and would obey whatever orders the consuls would give, the freedom and territorial integrity of Carthage would be preserved. Secretly the Senate bade the consuls carry out the instructions that they had already received. The Carthaginians gave up their children with forebodings and laments; the relatives crowded the shores in a despondent farewell; at the last moment the mothers tried by force to prevent the ships from sailing; and some swam out to sea to catch a last glimpse of their children. The consuls sent the hostages to Rome, crossed to Utica with army and fleet, summoned the Carthaginian ambassadors, and required of Carthage the surrender of her remaining ships, a great quantity of grain, and all her engines and weapons of war. When these conditions had been fulfilled, the consuls further demanded that the population of Carthage should retire to ten miles from the city, which was then to be burned to the ground. The ambassadors argued in vain that the destruction of a city which had surrendered hostages and its arms without striking a blow was a treacherous atrocity unknown to history. They offered their own lives as a vicarious atonement; they flung themselves upon the ground and beat the earth with their heads. The consuls replied that the terms were those of the Senate and could not be changed. When the people of Carthage heard what was demanded of them they lost their sanity. Parents mad with grief tore limb from limb the leaders who had advised surrendering the child hostages; others killed those who had counseled the surrender of arms; some dragged the returning ambassadors through the streets and stoned them; some killed whatever Italians could be found in the city; some stood in the empty arsenals and wept.

Assignment

I just watched a presentation on BookTV that would make good fodder for discussion. The book was written by Michael J. Sandel titled “What Money Can’t Buy.”

One of his arguments is that it is immoral and unproductive to pay kids to read books. He maintains they should be motivated to read because they love reading not because they are paid. What do you think about this and other points he makes?

Past Lives & Handwriting

Welcome Colin and thank you Larry W for giving him a good summary of information that should be helpful.

Just one correction. Handwriting was the final nail that did indeed convince me of reincarnation but it had nothing to do with Stauffenberg. This was revealed to me later on.

By about the age of 27 my searching lead me to about a 95% sure conclusion that reincarnation was real. I had received a personal revelation on it but, because of conflicts with church doctrine, had a difficult time accepting it and was looking for hard evidence for final verification. Some good circumstantial evidence would be handwriting comparison. The trouble with my handwriting is that it had changed quite a bit throughout my life up to that point so I figured that any sample I found from a past life would not be a close enough match to supply good evidence. Even so, certain ingredients from life to life would be similar, especially the intelligence and thought process, for that is one aspect we do not lose unless there is brain damage or malfunction. This gave me the ability to find prospects for evidence, but not proof.

On the other hand, my first wife was a different case. She had a journal with handwriting in it from the age of twelve. I was amazed at how unchanged her handwriting was from a young age. I therefore found the best prospect for my past life, and after much effort discovered his wife’s handwriting. I figured that if they were the same person the writing would be close but still not a positive I.D.

Then when I laid the two samples side by side I was astounded. Except for the cultural differences of the time periods they were the same. Even a couple idiosyncrasies in the two writings matched. I calculated the odds of two writings matching this close and figured it was astronomical. This was the intellectual evidence I needed to cause me to break out of the Mormon mold and re-examine everything I had ever believed as if I were a child, discovering the world anew.

Christmas Message 2012

This entry is part 17 of 29 in the series Christmas Messages

The Prince of Peace

The greatest inner peace can be had at the time of the most tumultuous outer conflict.

This truth was beautifully illustrated by none other than the one the world calls the “Prince of Peace,” the Christ.

He regularly greeted his disciples with the phrase, “Peace be unto you,” yet the Master had little outer peace.

Everywhere he went authorities threatened him.

Religious leaders were constantly challenging his teachings.

His life was in constant danger.

He was rejected by his hometown.

He had “No where to lay his head.”

His disciples were competing for his attention.

Thousands of ordinary people followed him wanting his attention and healing.

Tax collectors were after him.

People ignored his core message of love, the gathering and inclusiveness and just wanted something done for them in the immediate moment.

There was little reason for him to speak of peace…

But – of peace He did speak – and often.

Of what manner of peace did He speak?

A hint was given in his words to Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world.”

Neither is his peace of this world.

Let us tune in to the mind of Christ through the Oneness Principle for further light:

My beloved friends.  I know your hearts are troubled at this time. If your attention is on the outer world there is much available to threaten or to take away your peace.  Many think they live in the worst of times where fear is inescapable and peace is not to be found.

Many times in history it was worse than it is now including the time my feet tread the earth in Israel. Who among you could have walked in my shoes in the midst of slavery, turmoil and expectations of the end of the world and lifted up the standard of peace – a message that has endured through the ages and still lifts the hearts of the downtrodden to this day?

Verily, you could not have done this in your present consciousness so I did it for you.  I have shown what the spirit of man can do in the midst of distress, that in the depths of the deepest valley the highest mountaintop can be seen.

To find and share the great peace of God I placed my attention on a kingdom, which is not of this world, the kingdom of God which is in the mind of God. Both the turbulence and the peace of this world will pass away, but the peace of my kingdom will always be and it is ever present before your vision should you chose to see.

Choose light over darkness and enter into the rest of your Lord.

Cross the threshold and hear my words:

“My peace I give unto you.”

Cross the threshold and feel the Spirit:

“Feel the peace.”

Cross the threshold and be one with God:

“Nothing can disturb the peace of God.”

Yes, I know – to many these statements just seem but words, but they are not.  They are signposts to a greater reality – your true home to be experienced by your true self.

I want you to see in front of you a point of light. Now I want you to close your eyes and continue to see it growing larger until you are one with the flame.

Do this now and open your eyes when done.

Welcome to the kingdom that never fails.

Crazy Study

The media seems bent on proving that we live in a racist society. An AP poll is supposed to prove that 51% of us are prejudiced against blacks. This is crazy talk in my opinion and I can’t find anything in their poll to back things up.

You can read this infuriating article here:

The poll that is supposed to verify the article is here.

The poll seems to have sampled more Democrats than Republicans as Obama received higher marks than did Romney. One kind of funny result is that only 49% of those polled believe Obama was born in the USA.

Another part of the poll I found interesting and encouraging was that 53% favored “Small federal government providing few services.” Only 39% favored “Big federal government providing many services.”

It appears that many do not vote the way they believe or are just deceived by political rhetoric.

Re: JJ, said the storms are often hype up. Sandy, Storm is bad!!!!

Tom writes: JJ, you say that storms are hyped up by the media because of that I paid no attention to the storm Sandy and was not even worried about it…now it have killed 28 people and it would have killed more had they not evacuated most people. My friend Paula lives in NY where the storm hit. Should I be worried about her safety if storms like this one are hyped up by the media? It has killed already!!!

JJ Just because the media over hypes many storms and disasters does not mean that there will not be bad ones from time to time. One just has to look at the real facts that come forth and make a judgment.

Actually from the media hype I had heard it would seem there should be thousands of deaths so 28 is much less than the danger I saw presented.

The Weather

Only three days left until this most important election. This election will determine whether we take a road to survival and possible recovery or continue on the path of restricted freedom and an economic black hole.

I had a gut feeling that some type of event would happen that would move the people back toward Obama. I thought it might be some type of October surprise masterminded by Obama. It’s not through lack of trying that one didn’t materialize. Gloria Allred sued to release a Romney testimony in a child custody case. They hoped to unearth something damning but this didn’t receive much traction.

Obama’s problem was that Romney is a fairly squeaky clean candidate. This was not the case when Obama was running against a very popular candidate, Jack Ryan, in 2004 for the Senate. Ryan’s sealed divorce records were leaked to the press and unseemly sexual activities were revealed forcing him to drop out of the race.

In 2008 the polls showed that McCain was leading Obama heading to victory. Then at a pivotal moment we had the financial collapse, which was largely blamed on Republicans. McCain’s poll numbers dropped like a stone and Obama coasted to an easy victory.

This time, as we headed into the last lap of the election, again Obama’s opponent was leading in the polls by five or more points. Then we had hurricane Sandy which gave the fawning press the opportunity to portray Obama as looking presidential in handing the crisis. He meets with Romney supporter, Chris Christie, who heaps all kinds of praise upon him. The press runs with this quoting Christie over and over. Within a few days the race has tighten up to a dead heat.

Now the destiny of the country will be determined by which side gets the greatest voter turn out.

One may wonder why God or the benevolent Powers-That-Be would have allowed a storm to happen with such timing to give an advantage to Obama if his election will hurt the country. My observations tell me this. Good or bad weather does not seem to coincide with good or evil happenings or even divine purpose. I do believe that weather is influenced by the emotional mood of the people. The tremendous emotional conflicts at play in this country did much to call forth an excess of water which is a symbol of emotion.

Think back to D-Day – the invasion at Normandy. The weather was extremely uncooperative and came close to destroying the allied effort. You’d think that God would have made things easier since Hitler was the greatest arch villain of all time.

On the other hand, Hitler was also frustrated with weather when he invaded Russia. His troops faced a record breaking cold and many froze to death.

It appears that the weather is not an instrument in the hands of the light or dark side where it is manipulated according to will. Instead, it appears that it is a force that both sides merely have to deal with when it manifests its destructive head.

The bottom line is that the hurricane and floods tightened the race up but I still think Romney has a good chance to take the prize. If he wins expect to see some very angry Obamaites who are willing to cause damage to the country and advocate violence.

Re: The Weather

Larry W. Writes: This may sound silly, but I ask this as a serious question. The end of book four inspired me to actually try out some stuff, such as teleportation and/or levitation. Will someone watch over me to make sure I don’t get it? If I do get it, will someone show up and issue restrictions?

JJ Why would you even think someone is going to restrict you? Any restrictions we have are caused by two things.

(1) Ignorance and lack of knowledge and ability. (2) That which we impose upon ourselves by our free will.

These restrictions apply to all living things from the amoeba to humans to the masters.

You are free to learn anything you want. No one is going to stop you unless you become a major threat to the planet.

No one comes to the Masters and says, “Hey, don’t help the humans out. We forbid it.” They can do what they want but have come to the conclusion that the more we do for ourselves the more we will learn and the knowledge will be used with greater safety.

If you are teaching your kid how to play basketball you do not do the playing and shooting for him but realize he will only learn by getting in the game and playing himself. This does not mean you are forbidden from playing but reflects a decision you have made about guiding your kid.

Meanwhile, your kid also is not restricted. He can apply himself according to his will to increase his skill.

Obviously in the case of Sandy and other storms the Hierarchy is not interfering but letting things play out. I do not believe they see the re-election of Obama as a good thing but they did not interfere and guide the storm out of the way. As it is, the storm gives Obama a chance to look presidential and has gained him a few crucial points.

Notice that the devastation of the storm occurred in states that voted heavily for Obama for emotional reasons. The great destruction is a symbol of what his misdirected policies can deliver. The partial destruction of the country is a symbol of a greater one to come if he is elected again.

Yet the funny thing is that many are voting for him because they think he will save us from the destruction of global warming.

Re: The Weather

Larry W Below are a few examples from your writings that speak toward such restrictions. There are many more but I found these examples.

JJ To understand this, think of power being in the form of money. Once you have it you can use it anyway you think best.

Let us suppose that you created a business and now have $10 million in the bank. You can do anything you want with the money and several things run through your mind. If you had no responsibilities you figure you would just by an island in the South Seas and relax in the sun with a iPod in hand for the rest of your life.

You sigh and think of your responsibilities. Your business employs over 200 people and no one can operate it the way you do. Many of your employees are good friends and you know that if you sold it or turned it over to someone else that things would go downhill. For the good of the whole you do not buy the island but stay and oversee the company.

Because it is well known you have money you get a many requests for handouts. Sometimes you get a request that deserving and touches your heart and you send a check but most times you do not. You have a lazy alcoholic brother who is always asking for money but you rarely help him because you see that as enabling his weakness.

Some of your requests are for healing services. You have a relative who is always ill that wants money to go see a controversial doctor in Mexico. You look into him and decide he is a charlatan so you say no to her. She is upset and accuses you of wanting her to die.

You now look at what you want to buy for yourself. A part of you wants to buy a new Lamborghini, but you decide that would be too extravagant and buy a new Pruis instead and donate the difference to charity.

The point is this. Just because you have power doesn’t mean you just follow the line of least resistance in its use but have to make judgments, step by step.

Now some powers you mention are not in the actual hands of the individual, such as prophets and holy men who at times heal, bring famines etc. These powers come from a Higher Source and the Source much be checked with before the power can be used.

But once you have a power that is in your hands, such as money, you are then limited by circumstances and your free will a to how it is to be used. You can use the money any way you want but your wants are determined by many things.

The Election

Rob: Remember, JJ also said Romney had a good chance of winning because he had karma on his side.

JJ I guess it looks like there was not enough good karma left over from the sacrifices of the early church to help him out.

All things being equal I thought Romney could pull off a win unless there was some powerful October Surprise. As it turns out there was a powerful one but it was not Obama’s doing but nature’s and the Republican, Chris Christie.

Before Hurricane Sandy Romney was looking good with a 6 point lead according to Rasmussen, who was the most accurate pollster in the 2008 election.

Then when the hurricane hit, Romney and the election, and Libya were wiped off the news and all we saw was the devastation and Obama showing up with great concern looking presidential and the fawning media highlighting him at every opportunity while ignoring Romney. Within three days Romney lost 5-6 points, which amounted to losing the election.

This was why I brought up the subject of the weather and how we are sometimes subject to it, powerless to do anything to change it. Obviously the workers of light with power didn’t move the hurricane east as usually happens but let lower lives suffer from the results of their own emotions and intent as well as random activity.

Of the six points lost Chris Christie probably cost Romney two of them. Obama called Bloomberg and Christie wanting to pay them both a visit, realizing the power of a photo op. He knew the damage to Bush when he just flew over New Orleans after Katrina. Bloomberg, who supported Obama, refused because the presidential entourage would just hinder the salvage work and this was why Bush didn’t take the photo op because his presence would have hindered rescue efforts.

Obama getting in the way did not bother Christie who welcomed him with open arms and provided Obama, not only with the needed photo op, but gave the false image of a president who was crossing party lines to work with the keynote speaker of the Republican convention. I think Christie will go down in infamy in the Republican party as one who changed history for the worse.

Obviously, the Powers-That-Be figure that the last four years have not taught us the needed lessons that we need to digest and that we need to slide further down into the pit before we can truly wake up.

I plan on working on that awakening effort in the coming years and hope to see some success. If the lights are not successful in turning things around then we will slide into a collapse followed by some kind of rebuilding. If rebuilding should come we will again see a monumental struggle between the forces of freedom and enslavement.

Two Types of Soul Contact

Duke asks some tips on recognizing true soul contact.  He wants to avoid following a wrong impression.  If it is not true soul contact then perhaps it could lead to undesirable results. On the other hand, if it is true and he doesn’t respond then he may miss an opportunity.

There are two types of impressions that come through soul contact.

(1) An impression that gives additional knowledge or principles.

(2) An impression that gives direction and leads to a decision followed by an action.

When the seeker begins receiving the first he senses the still small voice and it is so subtle that he is not sure if the knowledge came though his own mental activity or a higher source.  In fact, many receive knowledge from the soul and do not realize the source, but believe it just came through their own thinking process.

BUT… as he accepts the knowledge and tests it and moves forward with it he eventually receives greater knowledge that he realizes is beyond the capacity of his normal brain power. As time progresses, he learns to differentiate knowledge that comes through the soul and that which does not. He also learns to run things by the soul to verify whether the knowledge is true or not.

The second soul impression concerns an action that should be taken and this is not as subtle as the first. When this truly comes from the soul it comes with enough power to get your attention.

Even so, the seeker may be confused the first couple times this happens to him because it is a new experience and he is not sure if his imagination is playing tricks on him or if it is really from a higher source. However, after he follows the direction a couple times and finds the results were beneficial he gains the ability to identify that which comes from the soul and trust it.

Here is a rough idea of how the process works.

The seeker feels an energy from the innermost core of his being that he instinctively knows is a benevolent source. It reveals to him a choice that he should make or a direction he should follow. Ironically, this is rarely in answer to a recent question he has or a prayer he has made. It usually just comes as a strong impression out of the blue.

The impression may involve something that can be resolved in hours, but at other times it may be days, years or even a lifetime.

The impression may also be negative in that it is something he must not do. Even though this comes as a warning feeling it is still clear that it comes from God or a benevolent source, or the part of you that is linked to God.

The first few times this direction comes the seeker may not immediately decide to follow. He will most likely think it over for a while or just try and ignore it. If the decision is important in the scheme of things he will not be able to ignore it as the impression will usually come back stronger.  He will normally get the impression three times so he will be left without doubt as to what he is supposed to decide. After the path is made clear to the seeker he will then be left on his own to decide yes or no.

If he makes the right decision and follows the impression from the soul he will feel a sense of relief and have an inner confirmation and comfort that the path chosen is correct.

Quite often, the first couple times this happens the seeker will reject the impression. Since this is a normal part of the adjustment the Higher Self is fairly forgiving and will give the seeker several chances. If he continues to reject the guidance then the soul will withdraw and the time of opportunity will be lost for a season – often for a lifetime or more.

Once the seeker understands the impressions from the soul and has proven them accurate to himself then it is important that he follow the impressions he receives. If he does not, especially if the choice is important, then he may not be given a second chance.  If the soul seems to withdraw and he wants the contact back then he will have to retrace his steps and fulfill the original choice he was given. If this is impossible then he must be open to following a new impression if it should come.  A second opportunity may or may not come in this life.

Duke’s Vision

He writes

Some time shortly after “letting go”, I seem to be aware of a presence. So I ask a question, something like, “Do you have any messages for me?” POW! I get a quarter-second-long flash. In that flash, I vividly see a very large, very old book. It is called The Book of Innocence. I still can see it in my mind now.

Wow – very cool! I really saw something! I’m really digging this. The Book of Innocence. Hmmm. It probably tells you what you have to do to be innocent. Yeah, I bet that’s it. All the things you’re supposed to do, or not do. Yeah. Hmmm. I wonder… I wonder what it really says. Maybe I could ask? I asked before and got an answer, maybe I can ask again. So I form the question in my mind, and no sooner had I done so when POW!, another quarter-second-long flash.

In the flash, I see the contents of the book. Rather than telling you how to be innocent, it is a documentation of everyone’s innocence. It takes all factors into account and proves and documents and establishes that everyone is actually innocent. This is a totally new concept to me, and it thrills me. For the next several days I’m high, I smile at everyone. I see everyone differently. The idea becomes one of my core beliefs. I move ahead and have what in retrospect was the most rapidly evolutionary period of my life. Now I didn’t go totally stupid – for instance, I didn’t stop packing a pistol for protection (lived in an interesting locale, shall we say), but did see the “bad guys” as mistaken rather than evil. The experience changed the way I see a lot of things; for instance, I went from being a Rush Limbaugh Republican to something very different.

Well now back to the present day. The effects have faded somewhat with time. Obviously that experience conflicts with much of what JJ teaches, and my mind tells me that JJ is pretty reliable and sensible, so he and his teachings generally win out in my mind, though I still resist some things.

JJ

I posted your whole interesting account so it will go in the archives.

I think you received a true revelation that pushed you in a direction of thinking that you needed and it does not conflict with my teachings at all, but agrees with them.  Notice the book says we are innocent, not that there are not two paths.  If there were not two paths (the Left and the Right) then there would be no power of decision and without the power of decision you and I would not be.

The fact is that everyone is innocent within the framework of their own minds for we make our decisions based on our self interest.  The difference between the left hand path and the right is that the self interest of the right sees it as encompassing a greater circle than the left.  They see that helping others eventually helps themselves. Those on the left do not understand this and thus make some very harmful decisions.

Here are some previous thoughts I expressed on Hitler that explains this:

Hitler actually wanted to do what was right but he had an illusionary way of going about it. He thought the Jews were from Satan. He was a vegetarian, he was in charge of what he ate and he really didn’t have that much ego. Everybody thinks he was an egomaniac but he wasn’t that egotistical. He let other people share the glory with him. But he was caught in a trap. He had some very powerful wrong beliefs in his foundation system.

Audience: That just goes to show you the danger.

JJ: Right. Illusion is the most dangerous of all because if you’ve conquered maya and if you’ve conquered glamour and you’re in illusion then you think you are a true servant of God and what you say is right. You can’t find any flaw in what you’re doing. Hitler swallowed some teachings that said the Jews were spawned by Satan from the days of Adam and Eve. He really believed that and he thought they caused most of the problems in the world so the obvious solution was to just get rid of them all.

He taught his guys this saying, “I even have friends who are Jews and you can have sympathy for them and feel for them as a human being but you have to transcend that and let it go because these guys have to be extinguished in order to bring in the new age.”

So he had this illusion and it was so powerful that it led him to do very destructive things. Illusions can be a very powerful negative influence. Jesus said to His apostles, “They will kill you and when they kill you they will think they are doing God’s will.” That’s because of the illusion they were in. Hitler thought the Jews were evil and the early persecutors of the Christians thought the same way. Just about every other religion had its persecutors who thought they were doing God’s will by killing somebody with a different belief system.

Here is another excerpt:

If you’ve ever read the book by Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People, it starts with an interesting story about a guy who was on the most wanted list — “Two-gun Willy” or something like that. The police were chasing him and they had him cornered and he was perhaps the most wanted guy in all America and the most hated guy in the country. The papers portrayed him as the most evil character you could imagine. When they had him cornered and he just had a short period of time before he was captured he started writing a letter just in case he was gunned down. He wanted the world to know something. He wrote in this letter that he thought he was a good person, he never wanted to hurt anybody and he only wanted to do good all his life. The way he wrote it he portrayed himself like he couldn’t see anything wrong with himself. Yet he was the most hated man in America at the time.

Dale Carnegie pointed out that though it may sound odd to us to hear this letter from this killer, this most wanted man that everyone hated, but he said everybody feels that way about themselves. Everybody feels that they’re a good person. Sometimes we put ourselves down but inside we think we’re really pretty good. Most people feel that. He says everybody, no matter how bad they are, no matter what they’ve done, they think they’ve done the best with their life that they could’ve done. Therefore, he said, you must be very careful how you criticize or how you look upon the other person because they think they’re okay. He said if you want to win friends and influence people we must play upon that idea. Play upon the idea that they are a good person. Look upon them as a good person then they will start responding as they are a better person.

https://freeread.com/archives/1756.html

Innocence is really defined by the person’s point of view. Because a person operates in his best interest does not mean that he doesn’t make mistakes or is not guilty by some type of standard.

For instance, let us say that you were late to a meeting and thought it was in your best interest to run a stop sign and you cause an accident that results in the death of an innocent person. On hindsight you kick yourself and wish more than anything you had it to do all over again. On top of this everyone seems to find you guilty for breaking the law.  All this does not negate the fact that at the time it just seemed like running the stop sign was the right thing to do.

Dan writes:

Mine, as best I can put it in words, was more that the whole universe is not only innocent but utterly and completely benevolent in all its machinations.

JJ

This harmonizes with the teaching of the Dominating Good. Because good dominates in this universe when all is said and done even that which appeared to be evil was a necessity.

Re: The Book of Innocence

lwk: I don’t agree with JJ on this. I think there are people who are convinced mentally that one thing is in their best interest but do something quite different for various reasons.

Sometimes those reasons are things like addiction, self-hatred, or taking the easiest path (studying to pass a college course you know is in your best long term interest, but you just really want to watch American Idol on TV, or something).

JJ Let us take drug addiction. Yes, that is definitely not in the addict’s best interest but in his altered state all he can see is that the relief he will get from the drug is in his best immediate interest. He is wrong, of course, but that’s what he thinks when he takes the drug.

JJ’s handwriting interpretation to the test

Soryn wants me to grade the intelligence of the samples he gave me. One of the problems with this is that intelligence is manifest and interpreted in different ways. Here are some ingredients. (1) Quality of the memory (2) Quickness of the mind. (3) Creative ability (4) Degree of self learning (5) Strong projection of personality energy is often seen as intelligence. (6) Determination and assertiveness.

People often misinterpret the intelligence of others. For instance, Thomas Edison’s writing reveals that he didn’t have native intelligence a lot above average but was extremely visionary and determined. He was indeed 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

Others think that those with whom they disagree are not intelligent because they do not agree with them or see through the same lens. But there are those on both sides of the political fence who are blessed with a lot of native intelligence and mental ability.

True intelligence eventually leads to soul contact and then the two move toward oneness.

Sample #1 (From “Handwriting Samples” in the File section. I’ll have to make these brief. Very free thinker and intelligent in the ways he wants to focus. Has good intuition in areas of focus

#2 In some ways above average – good at arguments, quick thinker. He has emotional conflicts that interfere with clear thinking.

#3 Average intelligence if this is a teenager below average if an adult. Interaction with friends very important.

#4 Very intelligent quick and creative thinker. Capable of high intellectual achievement.

#5 Very intelligent, especially high emotional intelligence. Extremely quick mind. Can accomplish whatever he wants.

#6 Another intelligent individual. Good self learner and good at arguing his point.

#7 This person has a quick mind, is perceptive and creative but has emotional conflicts that inhibit full powers of reasoning.

#8 Passionate and emotional thinker but has a quick creative mind. Probably promotes a strong philosophy.

#9 This guy wants to be perceived as intelligent and important and is above average but it is his charm and smooth talking that projects intelligence more than his native ability, which is a little above average. He seizes opportunity when it presents itself. Stubbornly independent.

#10 This guy has a lot of intelligent traits similar to Sarah Palin – quick mind perceptive and versatile but doesn’t try to project the feeling of importance and ego as #9. Strong emotional intelligence

#11 Sarah Palin – First time I have seen this much of her handwriting. Strong emotional intelligence, good executive intelligence, good self-learner, quick thinker, traditional values, strong presence. She underestimates herself and likes to play it safe – probably accounts for why she didn’t run this time.

Soryn’s Response:

Re: JJ’s handwriting interpretation to the test

Wow, I have to say I’m impressed!

Good comments on the nature of intelligence also.

Here are the authors:

1. Cristian Tudor Popescu, a well known journalist and writer in Romania. He uses strong logic, literary skills and human morality to prove his points. I would rate him as highly intelligent. He is definetely “a free thinker” and has very good intuition. One of my favorites. Here is a picture of him:

2.Michael Jackson;

3.Paris Hilton;

4.Emil Cioran, romanian philosopher, possibly the greatest nihilist thinker of all time. “Capable of high intellectual achievement.” – spot on.

5.JFK;

6.Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, leader of the romanian nationalist movement between the 2 world wars that allied with Hitler. I would rate his intelligence as average, but he had a very strong personality;

7.Gabriel Liiceanu, romanian philosopher. I would rate him as intelligent. He has high emotional intelligence and strong moral values. “has emotional conflicts that inhibit full powers of reasoning.” – spot on.;

8.Hilbert, genius mathematician;

9.Barack Obama;

10.G.W. Bush;

On some of the authors it even crossed my mind that you knew their handwriting, like in the case of Obama, it was that good! Overall, your interpretation was excellent. Now I can take more seriously your handwriting argument.

JJ

Always honored to gain some earned authority. This was similar to a test that the local newspaper put me to and the favorable article was read by my wife and lead to my meeting her.

I was hoping the sample that turned out to be Paris Hilton was not your daughter.

July 8, 2012 Larry W That brings me to another thought. JJ has not spent much time working to form any actual group. He concentrates on producing his teachings in book form. The group stuff we’ve done so far were all created by enthusiastic readers. The Gatherings started and continue that way. The local groups all happened that way. In fact, Artie definitely fills a need the way she keeps these aspects organized. I get the impression that JJ sees his mission as preparing his books at this point. Organizing his students beyond just blogging at KOK just does not seem to be on his radar right now.

JJ Actually, I do have quite a bit of experience with group work. That’s the main reason I haven’t organize one yet. I know how difficult it is and what I am up against.

From 1978-1988 I organized three different groups that self destructed through inner conflict and unwillingness to contact the soul. From that experience I decided that the next time I organized a group I would do it from a point of power and in such a way that the possibility of a successful foundation was high.

My next attempt at group work will be in the political arena and I expect to commence this later this year. I also plan on a metaphysical group later on but don’t have a timetable yet. My teachings need to get a little more traction.

Edison’s Intelligence

Tom I think you are wrong about Edison, he was way above average in intelligence. He average 95 percent on quizzes and stuff…read the below:

1. Thomas Edison had an encyclopedic memory and expected job applicants to have a similar knowledge. The test he administered to every job seeker had 150 questions; each test was tailored for a specific job. Some of the things college graduates were expected to know:

JJ Much of what society considers as intelligence is really just a reflection of good memory based on the fortune of the person being born with a good quality computer brain.

Edison was indeed intelligent but not because he had a good memory but that he used what he had to the best ways possible. Without his iron will and determination he would have been just another dreamer.

Which person do you think would produce the greatest literary work? Shakespeare on an old 1986 computer or an ego based politician on a new Macbook air?

A Shakespeare does not need the highest quality equipment to produce a great work.

The IQ tests are not a test of real intelligence either but are a reflection of the quality of the computer mind in many cases. Many people in the genius category have produced no work of significance.

I have never done that great on tests of any kind and usually score about average yet some here consider me fairly intelligent. That’s because I make the best of my computer brain.

The greatest sign of intelligence is to ask the right question and then seek the answer. This is what few people do.

New and Old Wine

LWK Writes: I have to wonder whether or not winning that battle for freedom in America is actually a goal of the Brotherhood of Light (BOL)? The theme of “The Gathering of Lights” (TGOL) is the future gathering together of the lights of the world in one place to demonstrate the great value of individual freedom and The Molecular Relationship (TMR). Gathered together these lights will not “hide their light under a basket” but will be visible to all in the world as an example (as the United States once was).

To a large extent America seems to have already have served its purpose. It has given an example, both of its excellence, and of its faults; and of how those – appropriately – on the Left (hand) have sought to defame and destroy its virtues.

Jesus seems to give good advice on this: “Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:17 (NIV)

America is an “old wineskin” and pouring in the “new wine” might not be such a good idea. This new Gathering (TGOL) must happen somewhere else. On the other hand, the outright destruction of America as a force in the world might make TGOL even more difficult.

JJ You make a good point but we must examine what is really the new wine and the old.

The old wine consists of free market capitalism and Constitutional government. We have gone away from these two things and in returning to them in many ways we are going back to the old wine.

This happened several times with the Roman Empire. It was built on good principles as a Republic and they drifted away from the founding principles. Then they would have a string of good emperors who did not rule as tyrants and went back somewhat toward the founding principles. When this happened the Roman citizens were much happier and prosperous.

Even so, our country can be taken back to our old wine of freedom and Constitutional government and create for our citizens a better way of life for a time.

The New wine is the Molecular Relationship and cooperative government and this will be resisted by those who are attached to the old wine as well as those who have spoiled the good old wine. To create a vessel for the new wine we need a gathering, which is more difficult to accomplish in this age than any other. In past ages a group of people could merely stake out a piece of land and rule themselves however they saw fit. This is not possible today as every piece of land and island is controlled by some state that has power to tax and declare law. Now the U.N. is even seeking to control every inch of the oceans.

This makes a gathering difficult but not impossible as a way will be opened up. In the mean time it is a good idea to return to the quality old wine as much as possible.

Karma and the Brain

JJ Quote: “Much of what society considers as intelligence is really just a reflection of good memory based on the fortune of the person being born with a good quality computer brain.”

Tom Ok, how come some people are fortunate enough to be born with a good computer brain?

JJ Karma and needed lessons to be absorbed.

Tom: Thanks, JJ, can you give an example of how karma or life lessons may help one have a very good computer mind?

JJ If you have good karma and in your next life there is no need for some significant lesson requiring limitations then you can select a well equipped body. If you desire to have a body with an exceptional brain then it will be available.

On the other hand, one may suffer limitations through karma. For instance, the entity may have developed feelings of superiority and ridiculed people who he thought were not that intelligent. In this case he may need to take a body with a brain that doesn’t function so well so he will learn to not feel so superior for merely having better equipment than the other guy.

Then too the person may have misused his intelligence and took advantage of others so he chose a lower level brain making him the one who is taken advantage of to learn a lesson.

Group karma could also cause limitations. Let us say a great mind like Tesla reincarnates but our group karma doesn’t qualify us to receive all that he could give us. In this case he may have to assume a brain that doesn’t allow him to develop the potential he had mentally in the last life.

Somebody Else Made That Happen

By Larry Kennon              Quoting from a recent Obama speech:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Obama was trying to say that business entrepreneurs “didn’t build” their businesses and success, but in reality they were the product of others. Others created the environment and some “unbelievable American system” somehow magically created their success.

What is probably more interesting about Obama’s remarks is not any insight into that “unbelievable American System” which is fundamentally a mystery and obviously a source of resentment to Barack Obama, but rather the profound insight those remarks give about the life of Barack Obama. Obama can’t truly speak about that “unbelievable American system” because he actually doesn’t believe in it, and in his Socialist worldview he can’t come close to understanding it.

But he is right in his worldview as it pertains to himself. “Somebody else made that happen” is the story of his life. He attended the elite and private Punahou School in Hawai from 1971 to 1979. He attended the private Occidental College in Los Angeles and transferred to Columbia University where he graduated in 1983.

Everyone knows that he graduated from Harvard. What they don’t focus on is that he could not have had even remotely competitive grades to enter Harvard. Obama won’t release his transcript from Columbia but that doesn’t matter. Those who graduated from Columbia with any degree of honors is a public record and Obama’s name nowhere to be found in those public records.

No white or asian student could even remotely qualify for Harvard Law School with grades so low as to not qualify for honors in their baccalaureate degree. No, “somebody else made that happen.” In public remarks Obama has admitted that he benefited greatly from Affirmative Action.

While at Harvard Law School Obama was chosen as the Editor for the Harvard Law Review. This position at Harvard used to always belong to a brilliant law student who often wrote articles for the Review and graduated to become a law clerk to a Supreme Court justice. No articles in the Harvard Law Review bear his name and he went on to become a “community organizer.”

Why was Obama chosen as the Editor of the Harvard Law Review? “Somebody else made that happen.” Harvard needed an acceptable black for reasons of diversity. “Somebody else made it happen” seems to be a recurring theme in the career of Barack Obama.

After Harvard Obama moves to Chicago where many “somebodies” “made it happen” for him, including the left wing bomber Bill Ayers who appears to have largely written “Dreams From My Father” for Obama. In politics somebody assassinated the characters and records of Obama’s early opponents. “Somebody else made that happen.”

Finally we have the 2008 campaign and Obama wins. George Soros and others largely funded that. David Axelrod came up with “Hope and Change” and all the ideas that Obama spouted from the teleprompter. “Somebody else made that happen,” again.

In the White House now Obama appears to have been more interested in rounds of golf, dinner parties with Hollywood celebrities, and his basketball picks. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid labored to construct “Obamacare” in the meantime. “Somebody else made that happen” too.

Actually the only real skill that Obama has ever consistently demonstrated is an ability to speak impressively to a teleprompter. Everything else in his life seems to be the product of someone else helping him, or giving him a hand up, or perhaps, using him for political purposes.

When Obama said those words “Somebody else made that happen” he was speaking his life story and he was speaking with great sincerity, off the teleprompter. He thought he was demeaning others but in fact he was confessing his own story. “Somebody else made that happen.”

Budgeting

I got this email from a friend.

President Obama ordered the cabinet to cut $100,000,000.00 ($100 million) from the $3,500,000,000,000.00 ($3.5 trillion) federal budget.

I’m so impressed by this sacrifice that I have decided to do the same thing with my personal budget. I spend about $2,000 a month on groceries, household expenses, medicine, utilities, etc., but it’s time to get out the budget cutting axe, go through my expenses, and cut back. I’m going to cut my spending at exactly the same ratio (1/35,000) of my total budget. After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending $2,000 a month, I’m going to have to cut that number by six cents. Yes, I’m going to have to get by with $1999.94, but that’s what sacrifice is all about.

I’ll just have to do without some things, that are, frankly, luxuries – six cents worth. Did this President actually think no one would do the math? Please send this to everyone on your list so people understand how idiotic a $100 million cut is in a $3.5 trillion budget – ludicrous!!

Taxes & Slavery

Duke: So, by your calculation, (Reference) sixty-something percent of the income I generate ends up going for taxes?

In other words, sixty-something percent of my labor ends up helping out our military, the elderly, the unemployed, victims of natural disasters, education, those in poverty, road & highways, many worthy causes in third-world countries, some of our threatened allies overseas, police & fire services, research, pollution reduction, the space program, and so on… is that right?

Sixty-something percent! Wow, I had no idea that my labor was making such a large positive contribution. No, I don’t necessarily agree with everything my taxes go for, but the net result is overwhelmingly positive instead of negative.

Thanks for letting me know!

JJ Yeah, it wouldn’t be so bad making the sacrifice if the whole 60+% went to worthy causes and was not wasted, but the government is so inefficient that about half the money is completely wasted and another half is not worthy making about 25% of our taxes going to something worthwhile. That’s why a 15% total tax bill (instead of 60%) is a lot more reasonable and could produce an even greater benefit than we have today.

Here’s an example of inefficiency: Obama’s Economists:

The Stimulus Has Cost $278,000 per Job

Here are examples of frivolous waste that has tremendous costs in addition to inefficiency:

The really bad part is we borrow money, in addition to high taxes, to do these things placing a great burden on our children and grandchildren.

July 1, 2012

Duke: Yes there is waste and inefficiency, but I do not accept your claim that only 25% of our taxes end up going to something worthwhile. Do you have a solid basis for that number, or is it based your broad assumption that half is wasted and the other half spend on something not worthwhile.

JJ It was an intelligent guess but I’ll be backing this up with some specific figures as this series I am writing continues.

Duke: Nor do I accept your equating the paying of taxes with slavery. I think you took one aspect of slavery and treated it as the whole of the matter, using wording that can also be applied to the paying of taxes by someone who begrudges them, and so you have extrapolated that paying taxes therefore equals slavery. Here is a somewhat more complete definition of slavery…

JJ Here is what I actually said in my post: “It is true that the overburdened taxpayer does not have all the restrictions of a plantation slave but a significant portion of his labor is forced upon him to pay taxes he doesn’t accept.”

I concluded that the core aspect of slavery is to be forced to labor against one’s will, but “the overburdened taxpayer does not have all the restrictions of a plantation slave.” This year the average person has to labor from Jan 1 to April 17 just to pay the taxes that are not hidden. That is a big chunk of freedom lost. I’d much rather spend that time having fun.

Duke: Housework probably has just (if not more) as much in common with slavery, but it is also not the same thing.

JJ You’ve gotta to be kidding. I can chose to do no housework if I want and no one will come after me but if I do not pay my taxes I can be fined and sent to jail. No comparison to either plantation slavery or taxpayer slavery.

Duke: Most people begrudge paying taxes because it’s easy to see the effect of money coming out of their pocket, and harder to see the benefits of a strong military, a good road system, programs that assist the disadvantage, education, research, reduced pollution, etc.

JJ I have no problem paying taxes for things that cannot be taken are of by free enterprise but whenever a group spends money that is not theirs with no accountability there is always tremendous waste and frivolousness in the name of doing good. I’m not going to just sit back and tell myself I am happy when over half my tax dollars are wasted.

Duke: And I was serious when I said that it was encouraging to learn that sixty-something percent of what I generate goes through the system as taxes at some point – it means my contribution actually amounts to something.

JJ Then by this reasoning if you increased your taxes to 80% you’d feel even better.

July 1, 2012

Duke: You can also choose to avoid having an income tax bill by simply nor working or working less, and no one will come after you and fine you or send you to jail unless you have outstanding debts, or incur debts that you do not pay.

JJ I disagree. You cannot just choose to have a non taxable income. There have been several years that I have had a very low income, but because I was self employed I still had to pay a self employment tax and if I didn’t do so then they would have come after me. Believe me in those lean years this tax money was very hard to come by and there was no option to not work.

July 1, 2012

Duke: Well you could theoretically have chosen to work for someone else, or even to be unemployed, if you really didn’t want to pay any income tax. But this is very much a side issue; the more important issues are a) whether or not taxation amounts to slavery, and b) whether most (about 75% by your reckoning) of the money we pay in taxes is wasted one way or another.

JJ I don’t maintain that paying taxes is slavery, for most are willing to pay a fair tax. I am saying that excessive taxation where we have to pay more than are willing, or go to jail, is a form of slavery. A slave has to work against his will for recompense that is much less than the fruit of his labor.

“For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

“For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.” Isa 52:3-4

 The Illusions that Grow Government

This and your previous post on slavery/taxpayers was really good Rob. Did you write the slavery-taxpayers points yourself? If so, good job.

I hope you don’t mind me asking this of you but I think the group would find this of interest.

You are openly gay yet you do not fit the gay stereotype that is projected by the media. If you believe the media all gays are big liberals who want big government to give them more and more free stuff and services. I assume that you have a lot of gay friends. Do many of them think like you or do most of them fit the stereotype? Are any of them offended by the stereotype?

We have several gays on the list and they are all reasonable people – not really fitting the media stereotype. I have a nephew who is gay who reminds me a lot of you and is miles from the media stereotype. Anyway I think the group would find your comments on this subject interesting.

July 2, 2012

The main point to consider is that I did not equate over taxation as being exactly the same thing as plantation slave labor but that it has the prime component of slavery which is forced labor without recompense. What I am saying fits in with the following definition you quoted:

“…all work or service which is exacted from any person under the menace of any penalty and for which the said person has not offered himself voluntarily.”

This is the problem with many arguments is that one side will say; “Your definition does not exactly fit the parameters of my one definition so I will not accept it.” Most words have several layers of definitions and we have to look at the context of the argument to see if the person is using it accurately.

We had this same problem with the word “legal” a while back.

July 3, 2012

LWK In principle slavery should be simply defined as the condition of being forced to work for the benefit of others without your consent. “Force” is not necessarily some slave master with a whip, but government penalties and sanctions that make one accept one’s slavery as best available alternative.

JJ Good point Larry. Few would argue against the idea that the people in North Korea are slaves. The people are not bought and sold, they are not whipped to force them to work and they do not have many ingredients of plantation slavery. Yet they are definitely in a state of slavery for they are forced to toil against their will. All societies that have existed have possessed some ingredients that enslave people, some much more than others. To say that any nation is free of slavery ingredients because they do not have all the parts encapsulated in plantation slavery is way too black and white that misses the slavery principle by leaps and bounds.

Total freedom includes the freedom to harm. This freedom must be restricted to a degree but not completely. People are free to lie, betray friends, hurt feelings, attempt suicide, commit adultery which are harmful. It’s a judgment call which freedoms to do harmful actions need to be restricted. Some like rape and burglary definitely need to be restricted.

Compliments

Ruth: JJ, I also have a question for you as Teacher of this group, so that I can understand the psychological technique behind this.

When you compliment certain people (men usually), on their posts, do you compliment them for a reason? E.g. is there a particular motive behind your compliment, because I notice that you do not compliment everyone who may have made great posts in the past?

JJ I wind up complimenting more men than women mainly because men post a lot more than females do here. For instance, out of the last 65 posts only 10 were by females.

Of course I compliment people for a reason – I have a reason for everything I do, don’t you? A lot of people make good posts and if I complimented all of them the compliments would be fairly meaningless. I make a compliment when someone says something that I think is fairly original or particularly helpful to the discussion. The last two compliments I gave were on lists that originated with the writers own thinking. When I read Rob’s list I wondered if he wrote it himself or copied it somewhere. I thought it was good enough to have merited publication somewhere.

I complimented Dan on his original list of restrictions of freedom by government. It struck ne as something I may use myself.

I compliment not just on quality but on things I find particularly interesting and helpful. That may be different with me that for you or others. Others give compliments also which is good because everyone needs some encouragement now and then. I am certainly not the only judge of quality here. Ruth BTW I am not fishing for compliments either, because these days I do not care whether I am complimented or not on my posts.

JJ I think you do care as you have brought this subject up a number of times.

Ruth Isn’t a compliment really, in effect, catering to the other person’s lower self or ego, or trying to make the other person feel good about what they did?

JJ Why would you think this? Even God wants recognition for his work and wouldn’t let Moses enter the promised land because he did not give it to Him.

Flattery caters to the ego but this is based on illusion. A recognition of a work well done is very helpful and encouraging and even God likes a pat on the back.

By the way, you do a great job coming up with helpful quotes from a number of sources.

Principles 26 & 27

This entry is part 23 of 98 in the series Principles

Principle 26:  The Forest Gump Principle

Most of us have seen the Movie Forest Gump, staring Tom Hanks. The interesting thing about Forest was that even though he was retarded he succeeded in everything he set his mind to do. He was much more successful than many who we consider to be near genius level.

This idea is not fiction for I have seen this at play in real life many times. I have worked for some time as a salesman calling on business in 20 different states. I have called upon many thousands of business owners and before I understood the Forest Gump Principle I was mystified over the fact that many successful business people didn’t seem very bright. On the other hand, many who did seem intelligent were not very successful.

Now many who were successful were intelligent, but this did not seem to be the reason for their success. I’m sure it helped, but intelligence did not explain the success of the many successful Forest Gumps that I met in my work.

The answer to the riddle is revealed in studying Forest himself. You’ll notice in the movie that when he set his mind to do something he directed all his energy and thought in one direction. Like a magnifying glass he focused what he had into one small endeavor that caused it to succeed.

Many more intelligent people let their intelligence get in the way. How is this? Because they get so many ideas that their focus is diverted in many directions. This means that the simple Forest Gump idea gets more energy than any single idea of the intelligent dreamer.

If you are a dreamer, such as I, then learn the Forest Gump principle and cease destroying your dreams through the shotgun approach. Pick one thing and apply yourself like Forest Gump.

Principle 27:  As A Man Thinketh In His Heart, So Is He.

This quotation, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.” from the Bible represents a true principle that encapsulates five previous  principles.

  1. Judgment and/or Discernment:  One must make a judgment as to the type of person he wants to be.
  2. The Two Paths:  He must be willing to take the path least traveled by.
  3. Energy Follows Thought:  He must put a lot of thought into who he is becoming.
  4. The Satellite Principle:  After he builds character the correct choices become easy.
  5. The Forest Gump Principle:  Don’t try to be all things to all people. One must recognize his limitations and do what he can, one step at a time to progress.

The question the seeker must ask to fully understand this principle is, what is the difference between thinking in your brain and in your heart?  Do we really think in our hearts or is this merely symbolic wording?

The answer is it is not just a symbolic meaning but there is a difference between brain thought and thinking from the heart. A thought from the brain comes from just one part of your being, but if it is from the heart the whole thinking and feeling makeup is involved.

Let me give an example. A student sits in a boring history class and learns about tyrannies of the past. He thinks enough about the data with his mind to be able to get through the class and pass his tests. The human suffering, the slavery and lack of freedom mean little to him as he does not think about them with understanding from the heart.

Let’s take another person, a Russian named Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. He grew up with a desire to be able to write and speak anything he pleased but the Soviet system put an end to that and threw him in prison merely for the contents of a letter he wrote to a friend. For many years he suffered abuses in his freedom through the Soviet tyranny including an attempt on his life by the KGB by poisoning that left him deathly ill for a time. When he wrote the book “The Gulag Archipelago” he expressed more than theoretical data from his thinking mind but wrote with his whole soul in the hope that readers would understand that a loss of freedom could happen to any society that does not value free expression with all their hearts.

People who are successful are those who not only set a goal as a good idea, but one that can be embraced by the whole being and pursued with passion because understanding is involved.

Understanding is the key word here.  When one thinks with the heart he understands the implications of that which is contemplated.

“If the human mind was simple enough to understand, we’d be too simple to understand it.”

— Emerson Pugh
