Ananda and Buddha

Ananda and Buddha

Question: Your book, “The Lost Key of the Buddha” equates John the Beloved as the reincarnation of Ananda who was the beloved disciple of Buddha. Can you give us more information on him?

First here are a couple quotes indicating he was a beloved disciple.

MANY people in Kapilavatthu believed in the Tathagata and took refuge in his doctrine, among them Nanda Sidhattha’s half-brother, the son of Pajapati; Devadatta, his cousin and brother-in-law; Upali the barber; and Anuruddha the philosopher. Some years later Ananda, another cousin of the Blessed One, also joined the Sangha.

Ananda was a man after the heart of the Blessed One; he was his most beloved disciple, profound in comprehension and gentle in spirit. And Ananda remained always near the Blessed Master of truth, until death parted them.

Below is an account of the end of Buddha’s life illustrating Ananda’s dedication to him.

ANANDA, the favorite disciple of the Buddha, having been sent by the Lord on a mission, passed by a well near a village, and seeing Pakati, a girl of the Matanga caste, he asked her for water to drink.

Pakati said: “O Brahman, I am too humble and mean to give thee water to drink, do not ask any service of me lest thy holiness be contaminated, for I am of low caste.”

And Ananda replied: “I ask not for caste but for water”; and the Matanga girl’s heart leaped joyfully and she gave Ananda to drink. Ananda thanked her and went away; but she followed him at a distance.

Having heard that Ananda was a disciple of Gotama Sakyamuni, the girl repaired to the Blessed One and cried: “O Lord help me, and let me live in the place where Ananda thy disciple dwells, so that I may see him and minister unto him, for I love Ananda.”

The Blessed One understood the emotions of her heart and he said: “Pakati, thy heart is full of love, but thou understandest not thine own sentiments. It is not Ananda that thou lovest, but his kindness. Accept, then, the kindness thou hast seen him practice unto thee, and in the humility of thy station practice it unto others. Verily there is great merit in the generosity of a king when he is kind to a slave; but there is a greater merit in the slave when he ignores the wrongs which he suffers and cherishes kindness and good-will to all mankind. He will cease to hate his oppressors, and even when powerless to resist their usurpation will with compassion pity their arrogance and supercilious demeanor.

***

THE Blessed One went to Pava. When Chunda, the worker in metals, heard that the Blessed One had come to Pava and was staying in his mango grove, he came to the Buddha and respectfully invited him and the brethren to take their meal at his house. And Chunda prepared rice-cakes and a dish of dried boar’s meat. When the Blessed One had eaten the food prepared by Chunda, the worker in metals, there fell upon him a dire sickness, and sharp pain came upon him even unto death. But the Blessed One, mindful and self-possessed, bore it without complaint. And the Blessed One addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “Come, Ananda, let us go on to Kusinara.” On his way the Blessed One grew tired, and he went aside from the road to rest at the foot of a tree, and said: “Fold the robe, I pray thee, Ananda, and spread it out for me. I am weary, Ananda, and must rest awhile!”

“Be it so, Lord!” said the venerable Ananda; and he spread out the robe folded fourfold.

The Blessed One seated himself, and when he was seated he addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “Fetch me some water, I pray thee, Ananda. I am thirsty, Ananda, and would drink.”

When he had thus spoken, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: “But just now, Lord, five hundred carts have gone across the brook and have stirred the water; but a river, O Lord, is not far off. Its water is clear and pleasant, cool and transparent, and it is easy to get down to it. the Blessed One may both drink water and cool his limbs.”

A second time the Blessed One addressed the venerable Ananda, saying: “Fetch me some water, I pray thee, Ananda, I am thirsty, Ananda, and would drink.”

And a second time the venerable Ananda said: “Let us go to the river.”

Then the third time the Blessed One addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “Fetch me some water, I pray thee, Ananda, I am thirsty, Ananda and would drink.”

“Be it so, Lord!” said the venerable Ananda in assent to the Blessed One; and, taking a bowl, he went down to the streamlet. And lo! the streamlet, which, stirred up by wheels, had become muddy, when the venerable Ananda came up to it, flowed clear and bright and free from all turbidity. And he thought: “How wonderful, how marvelous is the great might and power of the Tathagata!” Ananda brought the water in the bowl to the Lord, saying: “Let the Blessed One take the bowl. Let the Happy One drink the water. Let the Teacher of men and gods quench his thirst. Then the Blessed One drank of the water.

Now, at that time a man of low caste, named Pukkusa, a young Malla, a disciple of Alara Kalama, was passing along the high road from Kusinara to Pava. Pukkusa, the young Malla, saw the Blessed One seated at the foot of a tree. On seeing him he went up to the place where the Blessed One was, and when he had come there, he saluted the Blessed One and took his seat respectfully on one side. Then the Blessed One instructed, edified, and gladdened Kukkusa, the young Malla, with religious discourse.

Aroused and gladdened by the words of the Blessed One, Pukkusa, the young Malla, addressed a certain man who happened to pass by, and said: “Fetch me, I pray thee, my good man, two robes of cloth of gold, burnished and ready for wear.”

“Be it so, sir!” said that man in assent to Pukkusa, the young Malla; and he brought two robes of cloth of gold, burnished and ready for wear.

The Malla Pukkusa presented the two robes of cloth of gold, burnished and ready for wear, to the Blessed One, saying: “Lord, these two robes of burnished cloth of gold are ready for wear. May the Blessed One show me favor and accept them at my hands!”

The Blessed One said: “Pukkusa, robe me in one, and Ananda in the other one.” And the Tathagata’s body appeared shining like a flame, and he was beautiful above all expression.

The venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: “How wonderful a thing is it, Lord, and how marvelous, that the color of the skin of the Blessed One should be so clear, so exceedingly bright! When I placed this robe of burnished cloth of gold on the body of the Blessed One, lo! it seemed as if it had lost its splendor!”

The Blessed One said: “There are two occasions on which a Tathagata’s appearance becomes clear and exceeding bright. In the night, Ananda, in which a Tathagata attains to the supreme and perfect insight, and in the night in which he passes finally away in that utter passing away which leaves nothing whatever of his earthly existence to remain. And the Blessed One addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “Now it may happen, Ananda, that some one should stir up remorse in Chunda, the smith, by saying: ‘It is evil to thee, Chunda, and loss to thee, that the Tathagata died, having eaten his last meal from thy provision.’ Any such remorse, Ananda, in Chunda, the smith, should be checked by saying: ‘It is good to thee, Chunda, and gain to thee, that the Tathagata died, having eaten his last meal from thy provision.

From the very mouth of the Blessed One, O Chunda, have I heard, from his own mouth have I received this saying, “These two offerings of food are of equal fruit and of much greater profit than any other: the offerings of food which a Tathagata accepts when he has attained perfect enlightenment and when he passes away by the utter passing away in which nothing whatever of his earthly existence remains behind-these two offerings of food are of equal fruit and of equal profit, and of much greater fruit and much greater profit than any other. There has been laid up by Chunda, the smith, a karma redounding to length of life, redounding to good birth, redounding to good fortune, redounding to good fame, redounding to the inheritance of heaven and of great power.”’

In this way, Ananda, should be checked any remorse in Chunda, the smith.” Then the Blessed One, perceiving that death was near, uttered these words: “He who gives away shall have real gain. He who subdues himself shall be free, he shall cease to be a slave of passions. The righteous man casts off evil; and by rooting out lust, bitterness, and illusion, do we reach Nirvana.”

METTEYYA

THE Blessed One proceeded with a great company of the brethren to the sala grove of the Mallas, the Upavattana of Kusinara on the further side of the river Hirannavati, and when he had arrived he addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “Make ready for me, I pray you, Ananda, the couch with its head to the north, between the twin sala trees. I am weary, Ananda, and wish to lie down.”

“Be it so, Lord!” said the venerable Ananda, and he spread a couch with its head to the north, between the twin sala trees. And the Blessed One laid himself down, and he was mindful and self-possessed.

Now, at that time the twin sala trees were full of bloom with flowers out of season; and heavenly songs came wafted from the skies, out of reverence for the successor of the Buddhas of old. And Ananda was filled with wonder that the Blessed One was thus honored. But the Blessed One said: “Not by such events, Ananda, is the Tathagata rightly honored, held sacred, or revered. But the devout man, who continually fulfills the greater and lesser duties, walking according to the precepts, it is who rightly honors, holds sacred, and reveres the Tathagata with the worthiest homage. Therefore, O Ananda, be ye constant in the fulfillment of the greater and of the lesser duties, and walk according to the precepts; thus, Ananda, will ye honor the Master.”

Then the venerable Ananda went into the vihara, and stood leaning against the doorpost, weeping at the thought: “Alas! I remain still but a learner, one who has yet to work out his own perfection. And the Master is about to pass away from me-who is so kind!”

Now, the Blessed One called the brethren, and said: “Where, O brethren, is Ananda?”

One of the brethren went and called Ananda. And Ananda came and said to the Blessed One: “Deep darkness reigned for want of wisdom; the world of sentient creatures was groping for want of light; then the Tathagata lit up the lamp of wisdom, and now it will be extinguished again, ere he has brought it out.”

The Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda, as he sat there by his side: “Enough, Ananda Let not thy self be troubled; do not weep! Have I not already, on former occasions, told you that it is in the very nature of all things most near and dear unto us that we must separate from them and leave them? The foolish man conceives the idea of ‘self,’ the wise man sees there is no ground on which to build the idea of ‘self,’ thus he has a right conception of the world and well concludes that all compounds amassed by sorrow will be dissolved again, but the truth will remain. Why should I preserve this body of flesh, when the body of the excellent law will endure? I am resolved; having accomplished my purpose and attended to the work set me, I look for rest I For a long time, Ananda, thou hast been very near to me by thoughts and acts of such love as is beyond all measure. Thou hast done well, Ananda I Be earnest in effort and thou too shalt soon be free from evils, from sensuality, from selfishness, from delusion, and from ignorance!”

Ananda, suppressing his tears, said to the Blessed One: “Who shall teach us when thou art gone?”

And the Blessed One replied: “I am not the first Buddha who came upon earth, nor shall I be the last. In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a Holy One, a supremely enlightened One, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable leader of men, a master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths which I have taught you. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax, and glorious at the goal, in the spirit and in the letter. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure; such as I now proclaim.”

Ananda said: “How shall we know him?” The Blessed One said: “He will be known as Metteyya, which means ‘he whose name is kindness.”

ENTERING INTO NIRVANA

THEN the Mallas, with their young men and maidens and their wives, being grieved, and sad, and afflicted at heart, went to the Upavattana, the sala grove of the Mallas, and wanted to see the Blessed One, in order to partake of the bliss that devolves upon those who are in the presence of the Holy One.

The Blessed One addressed them and said: “Seeking the way, ye must exert yourselves and strive with diligence. It is not enough to have seen me Walk as I have commanded you; free yourselves from the tangled net of sorrow. Walk in the path with steadfast aim. A sick man may be cured by the healing power of medicine and will be rid of all his ailments without beholding the physician. He who does not do what I command sees me in vain. This brings no profit; while he who lives far off from where I am and yet walks righteously is ever near me. A man may dwell beside me, and yet, being disobedient, be far away from me. Yet he who obeys the Dharma will always enjoy the bliss of the Tathagata’s presence.”

Then the mendicant Subhadda went to the sala grove of the Mallas and said to the venerable Ananda: “I have heard from fellow mendicants of mine, who were deep stricken in years and teachers of great experience: ‘Sometimes and full seldom do Tathagatas appear in the world, the holy Buddhas.’ Now it is said that today in the last watch of the night, the final passing away of the samana Gotama will take place. My mind is full of uncertainty, yet have I faith in the samana Gotama and trust he will be able so to present the truth that I may become rid of my doubts. O that I might be allowed to see the samana Gotama!”

When he had thus spoken the venerable Ananda said to the mendicant Subhadda: “Enough! friend Subhadda. Trouble not the Tathagata. The Blessed One is weary.” Now the Blessed One overheard this conversation of the venerable Ananda with the mendicant Subhadda.

And the Blessed One called the venerable Ananda, and said: “Ananda! Do not keep out Subhadda. Subhadda may be allowed to see the Tathagata. Whatever Subhadda will ask of me, he will ask from a desire for knowledge, and not to annoy me, and whatever I may say in answer to his questions, that he will quickly understand.”

Then the venerable Ananda said: “Step in, friend Subhadda; for the Blessed One gives thee leave.”

When the Blessed One had instructed Subhadda, and aroused and gladdened him with words of wisdom and comfort, Subhadda said to the Blessed One: “Glorious Lord, glorious Lord! Most excellent are the words of thy mouth, most excellent! They set up that which has been overturned, they reveal that which has been hidden. They point out the right road to the wanderer who has gone astray. They bring a lamp into the darkness so that those who have eyes to see can see. Thus, Lord, the truth has been made known to me by the Blessed One and I take my refuge in the Blessed One, in the Truth, and in the Order. May the Blessed One accept me as a disciple and true believer, from this day forth as long as life endures.”

And Subhadda, the mendicant, said to the venerable Ananda: “Great is thy gain, friend Ananda, great is thy good fortune, that for so many years thou hast been sprinkled with the sprinkling of discipleship in this brotherhood at the hands of the Master himself!”

Now the Blessed One addressed the venerable Ananda, and said: “It may be, Ananda, that in some of you the thought may arise The word of the Master is ended, we have no teacher more!’ But it is not thus, Ananda, that you should regard it. It is true that no more shall I receive a body, for all future sorrow has now forever passed away. But though this body will be dissolved, the Tathagata remains. The truth and the rules of the order which I have set forth and laid down for you all, let them, after I am gone, be a teacher unto you. When I am gone, Ananda, let the order, if it should so wish, abolish all the lesser and minor precepts.”

Then the Blessed One addressed the brethren, and said: “There may be some doubt or misgiving in the mind of a brother as to the Buddha, or the truth, or the path. Do not have to reproach yourselves afterwards with the thought, ‘We did not inquire of the Blessed One when we were face to face with him.’ Therefore inquire now, O brethren, inquire freely.”

The brethren remained silent. Then the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: “Verily, I believe that in this whole assembly of the brethren there is not one brother who has any doubt or misgiving as to the Buddha, or the truth, or the path!”

Said the Blessed One: “It is out of the fullness of faith that thou hast spoken, Ananda! But Ananda, the Tathagata knows for certain that in this whole assembly of the brethren there is not one brother who has any doubt or misgiving as to the Buddha, or the truth, or the path! For even the most backward, Ananda, of all these brethren has become converted, and is assured of final salvation.”

Then the Blessed One addressed the brethren and said: “If ye now know the Dharma the cause of all suffering, and the path of salvation, O disciples, will ye then say: ‘We respect the Master, and out of reverence for the Master do we thus speak?’“ The brethren replied: “That we shall not, O Lord.”

And the Holy One continued: “Of those beings who live in ignorance, shut up and confined, as it were, in an egg, I have first broken the egg-shell of ignorance and alone in the universe obtained the most exalted, universal Buddhahood. Thus, O disciples, I am the eldest, the noblest of beings.

“But what ye speak, O disciples, is it not even that which ye have yourselves known, yourselves seen, yourselves realized?” Ananda and the brethren said: “It is, O Lord.”

Once more the Blessed One began to speak: “Behold now, brethren, said he, I exhort you, saying, ‘Decay is inherent in all component things, but the truth will remain forever Work out your salvation with diligence!” This was the last word of the Tathagata. Then the Tathagata fell into a deep meditation, and having passed through the four jhanas, entered Nirvana.

The War in Heaven

The War in Heaven

Question: As a Mormon I was taught about a great war in heaven where Lucifer and his followers were cast out of heaven to the Earth. Could you give us your views on this?

Let me first briefly sum up the Mormon view on this concept. It goes something like this.

In the beginning of creation God put together a plan for created Spirits to come to the earth to receive experience, physical bodies and redemption. A council was called and two plans emerged. The first supposed by Jesus was to allow people to have free agency, but because of their agency, sin and risk would come into the world. Jesus volunteered to come as the saviour to redeem humanity from sin.

Lucifer supported a different idea which was to take away free agency and make it impossible to sin thus not a single soul would become entrenched in sin because such a deviation would not be allowed.

God chose the plan of freedom presented by Jesus and one third of the hosts of heaven rebelled.

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Rev 12:7-9

The belief is that Satan and a third of the souls intended for birth were cast out of heaven to the earth and as punishment were not allowed to be born or obtain physical bodies. They are said to wander the earth and whisper in people’s ears tempting them to do evil.

The ancient wisdom presents similar concepts but with interesting differences. It goes like this.

In the beginning of creation there were 90 billion monads that were commanded by God to take bodies and evolve through a series of lives upon the earth. One third, or 30 billion refused. They preferred to remain in “pralayic peace” until the “seventh aeon.”

In other words, this rebellious third wanted the others go do the hard work, and then when peaceful enlightened conditions were achieved on the earth they would come down and enjoy the fruits of the labor of others.

This did not harmonize with the Great Plan and instead of granting the will of the rebels it is written:

“But the seven great Lords called to the greater Chohans, and with the eternal Lhas of the third cosmic heaven entered into debate.

“The dictum then went forth. The laggards in the highest sphere heard it echo through the scheme. “Not till the seventh aeon, but at the fourteenth seventh will the chance again come round. The first shall be the last and time be lost for aeons.”

“The obedient Sons of Mind connected with the Sons of Heart, and evolution spiralled on its way.” Treatise on Cosmic Fire Page 26

So instead of not participating for seven aeons these 30 billion souls were denied bodies for 14 times 7 or 98 aeons. This will be billions of years in our time.

Whereas Mormons present the idea that there are 10 billion or so fallen angels who have never incarnated and roaming the earth whispering in our ears, the Ancient Wisdom tells us that most of what religious people think are evil spirits are our own thought forms, or our dweller as we have been discussing. There are also people of low vibration who have died and either dwell in or left behind astral shells which can gravitate to people of similar vibration. For instance a dead alcoholic may hover around an alcoholic on the earth seeking to experience again the physical addition.

The Ancient Wisdom also teaches about the Dark Brotherhood, but most of these have once had bodies upon the earth and have chosen the path of extreme selfishness. Instead of numbering in the billions these wayward souls, these are few in number, but powerful and work mainly through the corrupt in the circles of the rich and powerful. Because many people mindlessly fall for their deceptions the Dark Brotherhood often seems to have greater power than the Brotherhood of Light, but this is temporary.

One thing that does correspond is this. The Mormons teach that the great controversy between good and evil is over the principle of free agency. The Ancient Wisdom also teaches this, but with a difference. Instead of being the controversy separating the third that fell it is the controversy between the Brotherhood of Light and the Dark Brotherhood as they currently exist on the earth. The pilgrim who seeks to take away the agency of others is in danger of the dark path whereas he who seeks to expand the principle of freedom is taking a most important step to tread the path of light.

Concerning the name Lucifer there are many misunderstandings about the word. Below is part of a previous article I wrote on the subject.

The Bible itself uses the name in a positive light. Here are some words from none other than Peter: “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.” II Peter 1:19

The words “day star” is taken from the Greek word for Lucifer which is PHOSPHOROS.

Now let us retranslate:

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and Lucifer arise in your hearts.”

If Lucifer refers to the devil himself maybe the Christian world should burn their Bibles.

Another variation of Lucifer is Morning star. Note the actual promise of Jesus to the faithful: “And I will give him the morning star.” Rev 2:28

Evidently Jesus will give us the power of Lucifer.

Even more shocking Jesus calls himself a Lucifer:

“I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” Rev 22:16

Let us retranslate this: “I am the root and the offspring of David, and Lucifer.” Rev 22:16

Morning Star is only translated as Lucifer once in most Bibles as follows:

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.” Isaiah 14:12-13

Even here most Bible scholars believe Lucifer refers to the king of Babylon which was addressed by Isaiah. Nevertheless, Isaiah often spoke with dual meaning and this has a definite correspondence to a fallen being.

Lucifer is a Roman word applied to the Hebrew HEYLEL and the GREEK PHOSPHOROS which literally means “One who brings or carries forth light.” It could also be translated as “one who is able to hold light.”

Now let us see what the Mormon scriptures tell us about this name. Outside of Isaiah the name is only used once here:

D&C 76:25 And this we saw also, and bear record, that an angel of God who was in authority in the presence of God, who rebelled against the Only Begotten Son whom the Father loved and who was in the bosom of the Father, was thrust down from the presence of God and the Son.

D&C 76:26 And was called Perdition, for the heavens wept over him–he was Lucifer, a son of the morning.

D&C 76:27 And we beheld, and lo, he is fallen! is fallen, even a son of the morning!

Notice her that Lucifer was “a” son of the Morning, NOT “the” Son of the Morning.”

Also notice that it says he “was” Lucifer not “is.”

He is fallen and no longer can be called a “Son of the Morning.”

What is a son of the morning?

It is a being who was with God at the beginning, or morning, of time as we know it.

The name, Lucifer, which refers to a son of the morning, is not the name of one evil being, but is a reference to pristine and holy ancient beings who were conscious creators before this earth rolled into existence.

Here is another reference to the Lucifers:

Job38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Job38:5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Job38:6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; Job38:7 When the morning stars (Lucifers) sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Now here is a thought. If the Lucifer that fell lost his status and there is more than one Lucifer (or bringer of light) – that means there may be some good ones out there somewhere.

Lucifer also refers to Venus and for good reason. It has been called the bright and Morning star for thousands of years. When it is visible it will often be the only star (or planet) visible in the early morning light.

Brigham Young made the interesting statement that the first man (the first Adam) came from another planet and that he had already passed through human existence and had overcome all things and became exalted. After he came here he took upon himself mortality to father the race of mankind.

Then he also made the statement that Adam was our God, “the only God with whom we have to do.”

This harmonizes well with the writings of Alice A. Bailey who also taught that the first man came from another planet. They tell us that the Ancient of Days, Sanat Kumara, came here from Venus (the morning star) 23 million years ago.

They also teach that he once lived as a mortal man like ourselves in another system eons ago and came here to be a father and God to the human race.

When the ancient of days came here he arrived with a number of morning stars called Kumaras. Here is Alice A. baileys writings about the one who we call the fallen Lucifer:

“In every grouping,-whether in heaven or on earth-there is always evidenced a tendency by some units in the group to revolt, to rebel and to show some form of initiative different to that of the other units in the same grouping. When our solar universe came into being, we are told in the allegorical language of the ancient scriptures, there “was war in Heaven”; “the sun and his seven brothers” did not function with true unanimity; hence (and herein lies a hint) our Earth is not one of the seven sacred planets. There is, as we know, the ancient legend of the lost Pleiade, and there are many such stories.

“Again, in the council chamber of the Most High, there has not always been peace and understanding, but at times, war and disruption; this is made abundantly clear by several of the stories in the Old Testament. Symbolically speaking, some of the sons of God fell from their high estate, led, at one time, by “Lucifer, Son of the Morning”. This “fall of the angels” was a tremendous event in the history of our planet, but was nevertheless only a passing and interesting phenomenon in the history of the solar system, and a trifling incident in the affairs of the seven constellations, of which our solar system is but one. Pause and consider this statement for a moment, and so readjust your sense of values. The standard of happenings varies in importance according to the angle of vision, and what (from the angle of our Earth’s unfoldment in consciousness) may be a factor of prime importance and of determining value may (from the angle of the universe) be of trifling moment.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 1, Pages 394-395

Because the name Lucifer is now so rigidly associated with evil instead of light few dare use the term openly, but originally Lucifer was a glorious title.

Even now it is a glorious thing to bring light to others. This principle is behind the entire concept of salvation as we covered earlier.

Buddha, the Individual

Buddha, the Individual

Question: Is any form permanent?

No form is permanent but the undifferentiated substance (or Purpose) behind the form is eternal. The existence of any form is temporary for all form changes in shape and nature, but form itself is an eternal, principle and will always exist.

Question: If the All is ONE, how can there, in truth, be any ‘other’, such as a Christ here and a Buddha there?

I have talked about this at length in the past.

Here’s a quote from my book The Molecular Relationship:

“One of the best illustrations of this is the guitar string. When it is stationary there is before you only one string, but as soon as you pluck it there is immediately produced the illusion of three strings. There appears to be three strings until the vibration ends. Then we see one string again.

“So it is with creation. There appears to be three energies as long as the one energy of manifestation is vibrating, but creation is based upon the illusion of the three. In reality there is only one. While manifest creation is in existence in time and space the Trinity will be real to us, but when the vibration that creates all things is stilled then all the universe will go back to its source: The One Great Life who is God, or the Singularity as it is was called by Stephen Hawking.”

Therefore out of the vibration of the One we have a C note here and a G note there with real effect upon the world of our experience.

Question: Are DK’s expressions but an attempt to present in words and concepts for the understanding and satisfaction of the human mind That which is ineffable?

I see no evidence of this. If it were so then his teachings would be fairly meaningless and ephemeral.

Question: Are not ‘Buddha’ and ‘Christ’ convenient word-symbols for dynamic aspects or qualities of Divinity, the ONE, as they manifest in samsara?

They are aspects and principles, but then there are individual entities who represent those aspects. In the quotes I gave DK was talking about the entity who was Siddhartha, the Buddha

Reader Comment: In a sermon the Buddha gave names and assigned qualities to all kinds of different past buddhas and celestial beings and he revealed that each had their purpose and function in the universe.

Then after he had finished his sermon, he smiled (and possibly gave a jolly Buddha-belly laugh) and said, “Now forget about all that I have said, because none of it is True!”

JJ: I’d have to see the actual sermon to see the direction of his thought, but if what he said was not true then he was probably creating a story to make a point. Either that or he was telling the audience that even the traditional heavens are temporary.

Here’s another interesting quote from the Master Djwhal Khul on the Buddha

“The majority of the Masters then enter into realms wherein They are needed “to impart, strengthen and enlighten that which is already fused, already strong and already full of light, but which needs that which He brings in order to express the all-encompassing whole.”

“I have to leave you with these words as food for reflection as there is little further that I may say upon this point. In any case and for all deciding groups of Masters, the work with the Hierarchy is over, except for the few Who choose Path I. Part of the mistake which the Buddha made was connected with this subject of decision. He loved humanity so much that He felt He could not and did not choose the Path which He was in reality ordained to follow; He chose instead the Path of Earth Service-which was not His Path at all. This He knows and will in due time pass on to His rightful Path. This little incident will demonstrate the complete freedom of choice which distinguishes the sixth initiation.

“The seven Paths are, as you know from your study of Initiation, Human and Solar the following:

It is interesting that the Buddha, who was the champion of non attachment, was supposed to have chosen the Path to Sirius, but because of his attachment (a good attachment) to helping mankind, he continued beyond the appointed time on the path of Earth Service.

This also illustrates that the Buddha, even though he reached Nirvana, still operates as an individual entity.

The Oneness of God is as a body, but a body has many members.

Below are some additional quotes from the Alice A. Bailey books about the Buddha which indicate an individual entity still at work – though he shares a oneness with all there is. These quotes also give additional light on the Buddha.

Hercules comprehended the true meaning of the Mutable Cross and, with full knowledge, mounted the Fixed Cross, with all its attendant difficulties and labours. The Buddha comprehended, through complete illumination, the meaning of both the Mutable and the Fixed Crosses, for the secret of revelation in Taurus was His, just as the secret of directed energy in Scorpio was the source of the strength of Hercules. But the Christ, knowing both the above secrets, also understood with a living comprehension, the mystery of the Cardinal Cross, because the light of the Transfiguration (undergone in Capricorn) revealed to Him the glory and transcendent mystery.” Esoteric Astrology, Page 315

“It was the Buddha who clarified for man the nature of desire and its results, with the unhappy effects which desire produces when persistent and unenlightened. It was the Christ Who taught the transmutation of desire into aspiration which, from the expression given to it in The New Testament, was the effort of the human will (hitherto animated by, or expressed through, desire) to conform itself to the will of God-this without understanding but conformity, in perfect trust and with the inner assurance that the will of God must be all that is good, both in the individual and in the whole.” Esoteric Astrology, Page 371

“Hercules-Scorpio.-Strength through testing.

Buddha-Taurus.-Illumination through struggle.

Christ-Pisces.-Resurrection through sacrifice.” Esoteric Astrology, Page 487

“Herein lies the distinction between the Christ and the Buddha. The latter revealed the process, but the Christ embodied in Himself both goal and process. He revealed the cosmic principle of love and by its means-embodied in Himself-He produced effects also and momentous changes in the world through those presented to Him for initiation.” Esoteric Astrology, Page 487

“The time has now come when a distinction must be made by esotericists between the words “spiritual” and “divine.” They are not the same, nor do they have the same significance. The quality of spirituality is Love. The quality of divinity is Will. There is a definite distinction between the two and the mediating principle (or that which relates or unites the two qualities) is Wisdom. Of that Wisdom the Buddha was the expression in time and space; that means that there was only a relative and limited manifestation of that fusing linking principle. His great achievement, unrealised by Him, was an innate and (at that time, not now) unconscious recognition of the distinction between love and will, and an ability to express in Himself a fusing, blending energy which could and did bring together love and will, soul and Monad. At the same time (and later in full expression in Palestine) the Christ demonstrated-for the teaching of humanity-the at-one-ment of love and intelligence, of soul and personality. These are points of real importance to have in mind.” Rays and Initiations, Pages 204-205

The Buddha behind the initiatory process is extremely active at this time; He works through the Christ and the Lord of the second ray, drawing the needed energy from the constellations Capricorn and Aquarius.” Rays and Initiations, Pages 268-269

“As you know, the first human being out of that “centre which we call the race of men” to achieve this point was the Christ; in that first great demonstration of His point of attainment (through the medium of what was then a new type of initiation) the Christ was joined by the Buddha. The Buddha had attained this same point prior to the creation of our planetary life, but conditions for taking the third initiation were not then available, and He and the Christ took the initiation together. At this initiation, and since then for all initiates of that degree of attainment, They stood in the Presence of the One Initiator, the Lord of the World, and not in the Presence of the Initiate Who was then Head of the Hierarchy. This third initiation was taken in a fourth ray Ashram, the Ray of Harmony through Conflict.” Rays and Initiations, Page 385

“This word He has lately given in the case of the Buddha, Who has expiated His most understandable mistake and will now move forward-in His own good time-on to the Path which will lead Him to His rightful field of expression.” Rays and Initiations, Page 397

“The practical point for aspirants and disciples to remember is that the Science of Invocation and Evocation entered a new phase when Christ came and presented Himself before humanity; He then gave the teaching which summarised all the past and indicated the new aspects of the future teaching. He opened the door to the Way of the Higher Evolution, hitherto closed, just as the Buddha epitomised in Himself the achievements of the Lighted Way and the attainment of all knowledge and wisdom. Christ, in opening this “greater door beyond the lesser door,” anchored-if I may so inadequately express it-the Will of God on Earth, particularly in relation to the consciousness of men. He lifted the entire Science of Invocation and Evocation to the mental plane and made possible a new approach to divinity. It is difficult to give you a symbol which could clarify this matter in your mind. But the one given may carry some enlightenment:” Rays and Initiations, Page 524

“The Buddha, for instance, in His Four Noble Truths, stated in reality the platform upon which the initiate of the third initiation takes his stand. He desires nothing of a personal nature; he is liberated from the three worlds. The Christ pictured for us and emphasised the fourth initiation with its tremendous transition from the Fixed Cross to the Mount of Ascension, symbol of transition, through initiation.” Rays and Initiations, Page 695

“To this we should also add the Four Noble Truths, as enunciated by the Buddha and which are so well known to all of us, summarising as they do the causes and the sources of all the troubles which concern humanity. There are many translations of these truths to which I have referred; they all convey the same longing and appeal and they are all essentially correct as to meaning.” Rays and Initiations, Page 756

“This is the “noble middle Path” of the Buddha and marks the fine line of demarcation between the pairs of opposites, and between the two streams which he has learnt to recognize-one going up unto the gates of heaven, and the other passing down into the nethermost hell.

“By the exercise of the two main weapons of the aspirant, discrimination and dispassion, he gains that quality which is called in this rule “the vital power”. Just as the eye is the instrument of choice in choosing the way of travel on the physical plane and has besides a potency all its own whereby it attracts and develops its own sign language, so a vital power is felt in the aspirant.” A Treatise on White Magic, Pg 229

“This Sirian influence was not recognised, and little of it was definitely focussed in the Hierarchy, until Christ came and revealed the love of God to humanity. He is the expression, par excellence, of a Sirian initiation, and it is to that high place He will eventually go-no matter what duties or hierarchical obligations may take Him elsewhere between that time and now. The Buddha was originally to have chosen the fourth Path but other plans confront Him now and will probably claim His choice.” Rays and Initiations, Page 415

Examining Buddha

Examining Buddha

Question: Do you recall when Mara, the evil one, arose in front of Gautama, and Gautama said, “You do not exist.”

Mara then dissolved. Was Mara Gautama’s dweller?

JJ: The Buddha whose given name was Siddhattha (sometimes spelled Siddhartha) and family name was Gautama, actually stated that Mara was Self. Mara was indeed his dweller as indicated from the Gospel of Buddha quoted below:

“The three daughters of Mara tempted the Bodhisatta, but he paid no attention to them, and when Mara saw that he could kindle no desire in the heart of the victorious samana, he ordered all the evil spirits at his command to attack him and overawe the great muni. But the Blessed One watched them as one would watch the harmless games of children.

“All the fierce hatred of the evil spirits was of no avail. The flames of hell became wholesome breezes of perfume, and the angry thunderbolts were changed into lotus-blossoms. When Mara saw this, he fled away with his army from the Bodhi-tree, whilst from above a rain of heavenly flowers fell, and voices of good spirits were heard:”

This account was not placed in writing until hundreds of years after Buddha’s death and is somewhat whitewashed to make it sound like the victory was as easy as getting out of bed. Oftentimes the real struggles of great teachers are left out by well meaning students who have placed the history in writing.

Both the struggle of Christ in the wilderness and the Buddha with Mara was much more intense and difficult than the few words we have about it bear record.

The scripture does accurately reflect that Buddha used the principle of Attrition to overcome his dweller.

Question: Is there and esoteric Gospel of Buddha?

Some teachers have said that one exists, but it is not available for public view.

Question: Will Buddha encounter Mara again in a future round?

The next meeting would not be one of confrontation. The Dweller will eventually pass through the human kingdom and receive spiritual assistance from the lives he previously tried to destroy or torment. They will be his Angel of the Presence. He will then have his own dweller to face.

The Buddha may or may not be an Angel of the Presence to Mara in a future round. Because he will have neutralized (or balanced) karma in the three worlds this will not be a necessity, but a choice.

Question: It is said that Gautama entered the final Nirvana after his teaching ministry on earth was concluded. Nirvana means ‘snuffing out’ (of karma and so also of the separate self). Therefore how could the Buddha Gautama continue to exist as an Angel of the Presence or any other indivualized being at some future time?

JJ: In the whole scheme of things there is no such thing as a final anything.

Below I am giving some quotes from the Master DK about Buddha. Let me ask the group to read them and answer the following:

(1) Does it sound like his work on earth was concluded with his enlightenment thousands of years ago? (2) Does it sound like he has completely merged with oneness to the extent that he does not operate as an individual entity? (3) Does it sound like he still has progress to make in his spiritual evolution?

QUOTES FROM DK ABOUT BUDDHA

“the Buddha, the perfect initiate, having reached illumination but not yet having developed to perfection all the attributes of divinity;” Destiny of the Nations, Page 38

“Souls on the wisdom aspect of the second ray go to Shamballa and join the great Council in some capacity or another. Such a one was the Buddha.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 519

“On a lower turn of the spiral, you will note that the Wesak Festival enacts a similar invocation and process. It is a re-enacting and training process. There and at that time, the three Representatives of Shamballa within the Hierarchy-the Manu, the Christ and the Mahachohan-invoke the Buddha, Who in His turn is the transmitter of still higher Forces. He is invoked by a special mantram and transmits the appeal to the One Whose agent He is.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 160

“The Buddha, the Illumined One, the Revealer of the light and the wisdom which come to us from sources far greater than our planetary Life, a Messenger of the Gods.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 287

“It is this which is engaging the attention of the Hierarchy at this time. For aiding in this endeavour the Buddha is preparing Himself and for this the Christ stands ready, focussing in Himself the desire of Humanity for that “life more abundantly” which He promised when here before, and for liberation from evil and admission into good. … This relationship can be established at the time of the May Full Moon at which time the Buddha will embody in Himself the powerful downpouring of energy-the dynamic energy of the divine will.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 395

“Today the Christ and the Buddha wait until the hour strikes. Then Their united effort, plus the invocative appeal of all who truly know and truly love, will bring humanity the new revelation for which they wait.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 395

The organiser of these Forces at this time is the Buddha.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 463

“But-as you may well have surmised-it is the Full Moon of June which is (this year) the season of prime and outstanding importance; it is in many ways easier for Western believers and esotericists to tune in and participate in the activities of the Hierarchy when closely connected with the Christ than it is in those related to the Buddha. The main intention in these early stages of keeping the Eastern Festival of Wesak is to familiarise the Western world with the fact of the presence of the Buddha and with His activities in connection with humanity. Such great progress has, however, taken place in the spiritual development of humanity that the Buddha need no longer continue with His task unless He so desires-and then only for a period of years, known to Him and the Lord of the World.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 542

“The Buddha will send two trained disciples to reform Buddhism” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 542

“A true Master of the Wisdom has not only taken the lesser initiations referred to above, but has also taken the five steps involved in the conscious control of the five planes of human evolution. It remains for him then to take the two final initiations which make him a Chohan of the sixth degree, and a Buddha, before that control is extended to the remaining two planes of the solar system. It is obvious, therefore, that it is correct to speak of the seven initiations,” Initiation Human and Solar, Pg 180

“The Buddha hovers over the planet, ready to play His part if the opportunity is offered to Him by mankind. Everything now depends upon the right action of the men of goodwill.” Reappearance of the Christ, Page 39

“Then the Buddha and the Christ will together pass before the Father, the Lord of the World, will together see the glory of the Lord and eventually pass to higher service of a nature and a calibre unknown to us.” Reappearance of the Christ, Page 40

“Actually the work of the Buddha for humanity is nearly over, and His long alliance with the race of men has nearly come to an end. The moment that the appearance of the Christ is an accomplished fact, and the rule of right human relations is beginning definitely to condition human living, then the Buddha will pass to the work which awaits Him. One of the senior disciples of the Christ, ranking next to the Christ in hierarchical status, will take His place and carry on the work, connected with mankind. By the time this particular Master takes over His task, the intelligent principle or knowledge, which is the outstanding characteristic of humanity, will have been to a large extent transmuted into wisdom by the world intelligentsia, though not as yet by the masses of men. Wisdom is the predominant characteristic of the Buddha and the momentum of this wisdom energy will eventually be so strong that it will need no further distribution or control by the Buddha. He can then re-orient Himself to higher spheres of activity where His true work lies, and begin to work with an aspect of wisdom of which we know nothing but of which both knowledge and wisdom have been expressing themselves through the Christ and the Buddha; later, through the cooperation of the Avatar of Synthesis, Christ will be able to blend within Himself both of these major divine energies, and thus be a pure expression of love and wisdom, of right relationship and intuitive understanding.” Reappearance of the Christ, Pages 96-97

“It concerns that which He has to surmount and many of the problems which face the occultist, including the “sin of the mindless,” the failure in Atlantean days, and even that mysterious “failure” of the Buddha (which has a planetary significance only hinted at in the Secret Doctrine)18 can be traced back to the condition of the deva substance of which the astral body of our planet, and the astral bodies of all forms are formed.” Treatise on Cosmic Fire, page 673

“You will note that the Buddha focusses in Himself the downpouring forces, whilst the Christ focusses in Himself the outgoing demand and the spiritual aspirations of the entire planet.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Page 114

“Over the Temple upon the mental plane, the Buddha presides and there will consummate His unfinished work. Over the Temple upon the plane of sentient feeling and of loving aspiration, the Christ presides, for this is the Temple of the most difficult initiatory processes.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Page 280

“The Buddha has a special function at this time as an interplanetary mediator, and in this capacity (at the coming May Festivals) He will attempt to bring certain Spiritual Beings into touch with our earth Hierarchy. They have expressed Themselves as willing to aid in the present crisis.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Page 685

Origin of AMEN

Origin of AMEN

The meaning of the word Amen has been brought up. The word as it appears in the Bible comes from the Greek AMEN which is the same as the Hebrew AMEN. It is interesting that the word has been basically unaltered since the Old Testament was compiled. Because of this it is said that this word is the most universal word in the world, being pronounced and spelled basically the same in many languages.

A reader makes an interesting observation about the word:

“Amen is from the ancient Egyptian and was associated with the names of the God-Pharoahs: as in, Amen-hotep and Tutunk-Amen. Many scholars believe it is actually a derivative of ‘Aum’.”

Djwhal Khul verifies this and does tell us that Amen is a corruption of the original AUM.

So where did the AUM come from? It is said to be a Sanskrit word and the first historical reference to it is in the Vedas of India. The Tibetans translate it as HUM which may be the reason Ekankar uses the sound HU.

For some in the Middle East it evolved into AMIN and then as AMEN in the west and in Israel.

It is interesting that in Egypt this word was used in reference to the name of their Gods and among the ancient Hindus it was associated with the invisible creative God.

Do we have a similar meaning inferred in the Christian scriptures. Verily yes.

The AUM represents God in creation or the word being made flesh or into form. John wrote:

“In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word WAS GOD. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” John 1:1-4.

This sounds confusing. God is identified with men, the God of this earth, the creator of all the heavens, and now as the man Jesus who created all things. What really did create all things? A more correct translation will help here. The Concordant Version does the best job in rendering the original Greek in John 1:1-4: “In the beginning was the word, and the word was toward God, and God was the word. This is in the beginning toward God. All came into being through IT (not Him), and apart from IT not even one thing came into being which has come into being. In IT was life, and the life was the light of men.”

God then is the Word, the AUM, or AMEN and all things came into being “through IT.”

This is further verified by Isaiah who writes:

“That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God, AMEN (mistranslated as ‘of truth’); and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God, AMEN; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” 65:16-17

The AUM is indeed the sound of God in creation. This is why the verse following the naming of God as AMEN (AUM) is followed by “I create new heavens and a new earth.”

Christ is also identified by this name:

“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.”

Here we see that Christ is also called “the Amen.” But notice that this reference is also followed by talk of creation again calling him “the beginning of the creation of God.”

Christ, the Son of the Father represents the creative power of God which mediates between spirit and matter. The Word of God, the great AMEN thus takes the voice of silence (Spirit) and creates vibration (Sound, the Word) which is the beginning of the creation of God in the worlds of form.

Question: When the Dweller is overcome does it disintegrate into nothingness or does it live on in some other form?

Just like when you die and your body disintegrates, the form changes but nothing is lost. Your life lives on in other spheres and the elements of your body change in form but do not disappear.

Even so, the body of the Dweller is occupied by a lower life form that leaves its astral body when it dies. But no life in the universe is ever completely destroyed and this entity will incarnate as another Dweller for another person in a future time. He will continue to do this until he takes in enough light from the Angel of the Presence (which he encounters at the end of each life) to be transmuted into more advanced consciousness and form. Once you destroy your personal Dweller you will not be personally bothered by him again in this solar system.

Question: When Jesus uttered the “consummatum est” on the cross, was he really finished? Did he really ascend to God or will he meet Satan again on a higher turn of the spiral?

Jesus was speaking of being finished with his mission assigned to him by his Father.

Just as God finished the creation (as described in the Bible) yet still works and has much work to do, even so Jesus is still hard at work on new project. One work he has to do which is not finished is to “gather his elect from the four corners of the earth.” (See Matt 24:31)

Here the scriptures speak of a future work he has yet to finish:

Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.” Rom 9:27-28

The scriptures say several times that God will “make all things new.” This of course takes work.

When Christ comes again he is not just going to say, “Hey, I’m done with my work and am just going to lay around.” No indeed. He will be hard at work finishing the decree of the angels to bring Peace on Earth, good will to mankind.”

The work of God is eternal and creation is taking place now and will continue unto time indefinite.

After his work is wrapped up on this earth Christ will move on to even higher spheres and will not meet his spiritual adversaries again for a long period of time. In the end of our evolution there will be no enemies to God for all shall eventually sing His praises with one voice.

Toward Group Cohesion

Toward Group Cohesion

Keith gave an excellent quote worthy of the archives:

“Christianity is the active side of the triad, Islam the passive, Buddhism the reconciling. Christianity seeks God, Islam surrenders to God, Buddhism finds God. When you see these as three separate systems, you miss the great teaching of which each contains but a part. Seek the kingdom as a Christian, give yourself to God as a Muslim, find your new companion in the dynamic silence of Buddhist meditation.”

Interesting correspondence to the Triad Principle. When this occurs there is usually something worth looking into.

Concerning a book under discussion Melva made an interesting point.

“Reading this chapter did not create the feelings of my atoms vibrating at a faster rate….like I feel when I read DK. I like it for its dream quality and I…the mystic dreamer…was dreaming right along with the author.”

Remember that Djwhal Khul teaches that seekers are divided into two groups: The mystic and the occultist.

The mystic has his focus on the heart energy and likes the dream, the poet and the feel of things. The occultist is mental, likes reasoning and common sense.

The author is indeed a mystic, writes with great feeling and there’s poetry and some illogical inspiration in her style.

Some in this group lean toward the occult path and others the mystical.

Even though I am on the occult path there is still a lot of the mystic in me and though I am turned off by many illusionary writings, I can really enjoy something written with passion and poetry. If there is a lot of error in such writings I tend to find inspiration between the lines.

I read some off beat things for one centered in the mind. For instance, I have read the tabloids all my life. The more outrageous the more I like to read them. I find it gives my serious side a Sabbath of rest.

I also have always enjoyed comic books and have never outgrown them and have collected a number of them.

When I was young I enjoyed science fiction and gravitated toward the writers who appreciated pure science – Frederick Brown was my favorite.

When I first read science fiction writer, Ray Bradbury (a mystic), I was repulsed by him for he was very unscientific and loose with facts. But then later took another look at him from the mystical viewpoint and saw that he was one of the greatest writers of all time, not because of his scientific accuracy, but because of his style, his poetry and the way he could make you feel an atmosphere and picture with just a few well placed words.

One can get a lot more meat by studying Djwhal Khul than reading the mystical authors, and indeed I do study him above all others, but sometimes it is good to grease the wheels of the mind with a little mystical dreaming.

I was told to not be hard on those making false predictions because circumstances change making the results different than expected.

Thank God we do not live in Old Testament times where a person who makes a false prediction was put to death. See Deut 13:1-5 & 18:20-22.

This was one of the reasons Jesus was convicted and crucified. The Jews accused him of making a false prophecy when he said that if the temple were torn down he could rebuild it in three days.

He was talking about the temple of his body, but his accusers thought he meant the stone temple and deemed such a prediction outrageously false and worthy of the death penalty.

A reader writes: “Am I right in saying that that only Mr. Dewey decides for us what we can discuss here with regard to Truth? That seems rather restrictive.”

Yes, I am the current teacher here and I set the direction of the course just as all successful teachers of all classes in the universe do. In the past when I have been very busy we have had several others handle the teaching and they have been free to handle the classroom as they saw fit.

If you feel this is too restrictive then you have the perfect freedom to roam through the thousands of free-for-all groups on the world wide web and join one of them. Then you will no longer be restricted.

I must warn you though, the free-for-all groups do not draw the quality of discussion that many appreciate on the Keys.

In the past the only people who have made this complaint have been the few who have come here with an agenda that they have wished to force feed us because no one else would listen to them. We give reasonable freedom to express diverse views and the group as a whole seem quite happy with the latitude we have here.

In response to a reader complaining that he cannot change the objectives of this class and feels that I have to commission ideas I say: I do not commission anything. Some revelations are welcome and some are not. If you are a true disciple you will be able to tune into the group thought and obtain a feel as to what is welcome and what is not. The group always complains about those who do not obey the rules before I do, therefore you should be concerned with the group’s will more than my own.

If someone were to post a nonsensical revelation from space aliens many would find this annoying.

If you were to post a revelation revealing a true principle you would probably receive a pat on the back from the group.

If your revelation or treatise were very long you would probably receive complaints even if it is good.

The few who have not wanted to follow the rules and have an agenda of their own seem to always claim subtle support. I am not concerned about mysterious anonymous e-mailers. Let anyone who wants change have the courage to post their feelings. We don’t bite.

If a fervent Mormon were to make some post on the new Nauvoo temple I’m sure he would receive some thankful e-mails from LDS in the group, but such off topic data would be a distraction to the group as a whole and the majority who are not LDS would be annoyed. Some would like to appeal to a minority who want to wander off topic to the annoyance of the majority who do not. This is destructive to group cohesion, which is the first principle of group work.

The Challenge of Prophecy

The Challenge of Prophecy

I notice that the dialog around planet X is starting to shift around the internet. Some are beginning to realize and teach that if it is going to be here by March of 2003 then it should be within the orbit of Jupiter and be brighter than Venus in the sky. Others are starting to realize that it is highly unlikely that astronomers would be involved in a conspiracy of silence (about observing Planet X) when most of them are very eager to share any new discovery, no matter what it is.

I don’t know if my statement on this was picked up or if others are coming to the same conclusions I did.

It does appear that a number of believers are starting to distance themselves from the prophecy.

There is a greater danger that the current asteroid in discussion could hit us and there is little chance of that. I’m sure it will not be long before they announce that it will miss us by a safe margin.

Just to show you how difficult making a true prophecy is here are some I personally copied from some tabloids a dozen years ago.

National Enquirer, Jan 2, 1990, Predictions for the 90’s:

In 1999 Fred Savage will replace Johnny Carson as head of the Tonight Show.

Liz Taylor will marry Malcolm Forbes.

Pee-Wee Herman will be transformed into a Clark Gable-type actor.

Jackie Onassis will marry Jon Bon Jovi

A meteorite will plow into the White House Rose Garden and the first family will be endangered by radiation from it.

An earthquake will rock Seattle in late spring (of 1990) – and a nearby volcano, thought to be extinct, will rumble back to life, forcing thousands to flee the area.

Elvis will sing at the Superbowl of 1991. Sun, Jan 29, 1991

Weekly World News, Jan 24, 1989

The discovery of intelligent life on Venus and Mars will occur in 1989.

National Enquirer, Jan 2, 1991

A massive Earthquake will strike the Grand Canyon in the spring

Sadaam Hussein will be killed in Feb 91 in an accidental nuclear explosion.

Examiner, Dec. 25, 1990. .

  • The players on a top pro football team will go on strike when the coach hires America’s first female quarterback and allows her to shower and dress in the men’s locker room.
  • Mike Tyson will shock the boxing world by going back to school to become what he always wanted to be – a nurse.
  • Kristie Alley will become a professional wrestler. She’ll be billed as the toughest woman in the world and will hold titles in the U.S. and overseas.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev will travel to Hollywood to play a role in a new James Bond movie. He’ll enjoy it so much he and wife Raisa will buy a house in Beverly Hills near the Reagans, and he’ll take more movie rolls.
  • Donald Trump will lose every cent of his fortune and tell the world that it really doesn’t matter because he’s found what’s really important in life – religion. He’ll retire to a monastery in Tibet and spend his time praying and growing radishes.

(Note: This one is pretty funny for us living in 2020)

  • Shirley MacLaine will mysteriously vanish during an out-of-body experience and become the subject of a nationwide search. Later she will speak to America through a medium and tell the nation that she’s become stuck in a parallel universe and can’t get back.

Still there is no lack of people wanting to be prophets. It is difficult enough for a Master to make correct predictions let alone a person in the lower personality seeking for glory.

Question: I notice from Book II that Elizabeth had to suffer in order to repay her karmic debt, whereas Philo had not suffered for his.

I asked myself why this was true and the answer I came up with was because Elizabeth had turned to the light and was prepared to take responsibility for her actions. She was started on the upward road, and this suffering was part of the way back. Granted, she found ways to mitigate these sufferings and find other ways to pay off the debt, but my point is she had to pass through certain things on her upward journey.

On the other hand, Philo was determined to continue in his ways, but if at some point, he ever decides to repent, at that time karma would kick in on him, and he would have to go through a similar process.

Am I on the right track here, or am I missing something more?

JJ: You are on the right track, but there is an additional point to be made.

It is correct that when a person begins to make spiritual progress he becomes almost eager to pay off his debts so he can make his next great leaps in evolution. This is one reason that many good people seem to have more than their share of problems.

BUT… This does not mean that those on the left hand path will escape the effects of karma. It is true that some of the effects are delayed because they seek to avoid learning their lessons.

They will either turn around and then learn their lessons and pay of their karma, or they will continue on the path of pure selfishness which leads to a breakdown and destruction of all their soul has built for them in the three worlds.

Brigham Young spoke correctly when he said they would “return to their native element.”

The distress of this process is described as follows in the Mormon scriptures:

D&C 76:45 And the end thereof, neither the place thereof, nor their torment, no man knows;

D&C 76:46 Neither was it revealed, neither is, neither will be revealed unto man, except to them who are made partakers thereof;

D&C 76:47 Nevertheless, I, the Lord, show it by vision unto many, but straightway shut it up again;

D&C 76:48 Wherefore, the end, the width, the height, the depth, and the misery thereof, they understand not, neither any man except those who are ordained unto this condemnation.

Djwhal Khul tells us that the people who follow the dark path of destruction to the end are few, that most turn around before the point of no return. Those who do not will have to wait for the creation of a new solar system billions of years hence before another chance is given. – then they will have to begin their progression all over again.

In the great justice of God there is always hope, even for the most deprived of souls.

Hurt Not the Earth

Hurt Not the Earth

I was asked asked about the meaning of the Seventh chapter of Revelations. Let us quote:

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

“And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

“And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” Rev 7:1-4

There are five angels mentioned here: The four angels holding the four winds and the angel ascending from the East. The first question to examine is – who are these angels?

These four angels are representatives of the forces of attraction which set in motion the forces of karma. Various hierarchies of beings assist in the dispersion of these energies so a final justice becomes manifest.

The four represent the four directions of a circle or compass, North, South, East and West. The fifth angel ascending represents the point at the center of the circle, or the Central Spiritual Sun.

The four angels also correspond to the four arms of the cross, and the fifth, the point of At-One-Ment at the point of crossing, or synthesis.

The highest in the hierarchy of these four principles in the solar system are the four Lords of Karma working through rays 1, 3, 5 and 7 in conjunction with the Logoi of Vulcan (a hidden planet), Saturn, Venus and Uranus. These Lords work through the sending (male) rays because they work from the mind of God to send the energies of karma to produce the justice of God.

The Hindus called these the Four Maharajahs, who are named Indra in the (symbolic) east, Yama in the south, Varuna in the west, and Kubera in the north.

These four great Lords are part of a chain of hierarchy. There are higher agents (of which nothing is given) and there are lower representatives.

The Four Maharajahs are Lords of Karma for the entire solar system, but there are also four Lords that are representatives here on the earth. They are said to be the four archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.

Who then is the angel ascending from the east?

To understand we must first translate this verse accurately. An entire word is left out of this common translation which is HELIOS or the “sun.” “East” is translated from ANATOLE HELIOS which literally translates a “rising sun.”

ANATOLE by itself can be translated as “east” in the right context but is more literally translated as “rising.”

Thus this fifth and synthesizing angel ascends “from the rising sun.”

On the solar level then this fifth angel is the Solar Logos and on the highest earth level the fifth angel would be the Planetary Logos, the Ancient of Days, followed by The Christ working as the righteous judge through an agent or agents on the earth who are symbolic of the great power manifest by Elijah the Prophet.

As far as humanity is concerned the angel “from the rising Sun” represents a messenger who brings sunlight, or the light of truth, to a world that sits in darkness. This messenger represents the rising Sun, or the preparations for the coming of Christ – the mission of a latter-day Elijah. The Christ himself is symbolized by the sun at noonday.

The Solar Logos sends out a message that filters down to all those who disperse karma and have power to hurt “the earth, the sea and the trees.”

Let us rephrase so we can understand. The Great Life that is in charge of the coming earth changes sees that a cleansing of the earth is overdo and unless he intervenes continents could sink, tidal waves could engulf cities and fire and great wind could destroy much of the earth. Because of this point of tension psychics the world over have been predicting all kinds of destruction, especially over the past few decades.

Many people wonder why many of these prophesied events did not happen. The reason is that the great Lord cried out to the four Lords having power over the earth’s karma: “Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.”

Many sensitives have picked up the presence of destructive energies on the horizon and indeed they exist and are looming there, but the Great Lord has intervened and decreed that the destructive energies shall be held in check until the 144,000 are sealed by seeing the light of truth which is revealed in preparation for the coming of Christ and then having it verified by the God within.

It is as I have written to you many times in the past. The great destructions that are feared by the multitudes are held in check until the gathering of lights occurs and has a strong foothold on the earth. No great destruction will occur until there are 144,000 that will correctly sing the Song of the 144,000. Notice the word “correctly.” And even after this occurs the destructions predicted can still be prevented by the free will of mankind just as the destruction of Nineveh was overturned. Our fate is largely up to us. The only wild card in the immediate future is not natural destruction, but weapons of mass destruction that can be set off by the free will of humanity.

Question: Does this sealing of the servants of God in their foreheads correspond to one of the initiations taught by DK?

The Third initiation most closely corresponds to “keeping your mind centered in the light.” It is only after one has passed this hurdle that he is able to keep this centering no matter what distraction should occur.

Even so, there will be many who have not reached the third initiation who will recognize the name of God in their forehead. Even though the first and second degree initiates are not infallible many of them do stand in the Spirit and “endure to the end.”

Thus the first great molecular cell of 144,000 will be composed of the pure in heart in several grades of spiritual advancement. Some will fall away, but will be replaced by others who have the seal, keeping the spiritual life intact.

The Corruption of Truth

The Corruption of Truth

Thought I would make a few comments on this quote I posted:

“Two plus two equals four and nothing else, though corrupt thinking says otherwise.”

It may seem to some that this is a rigid statement that belongs to the religious camp that insists that they are right and everyone else is wrong, but such is far from the case.

The fact is that when you have two sides to any issue there will be elements of truth and error presented by them both. To take a truth presented by an opposing side and oppose it just because it is used by them is a fallacy or a guilt by association approach which is very deceptive.

Let us take Hitler, for example, who most see as an evil character. He approved and endorsed the production of the first Volkswagen Bug. The Beetle turned out to be the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made.

Does this mean that all those millions who bought the car and loved it are evil Nazis?

Of course not. In this case guilt by association seems ridiculous yet many fall prey to its misuse, some by ignorance yet others through clever manipulation.

I point this out because statements of absolute truth are often seen by alternative spiritual people as something that belongs to old time religion that must be replaced by relative truth. They correctly see that there are many paths that give us true direction on the path to liberation as opposed to one path as presented by some religions.

What is overlooked is that there are points of absolute truth on any path as well as absolute falsehoods. All paths are composed of much truth mixed with error and discerning the difference is the great challenge.

The fundamentalist claiming that his path is 100% error free is where the mistake is. His mistake is not associated with the concept of truth itself.

A Course in Miracles makes the profound statement that “the truth is true and nothing else is true.”

If we look at a simple statement like 2+2=4 then this becomes obvious. 2+2=4 and nothing else is true. One could give a trillion different answers, but only one is true.

This is the case with all basic math and the universe is built upon mathematical principles.

Why then do so many people take exception to the idea of absolute truth?

The answer lies in semantics. The problem lies in how people see truth in their own minds. We often hear statements such as, “You have your truth and I have mine.” Others may say that truth changes with time and is relative.”

What they leave out of the equation is that it is not truth that changes but the perception of truth as well as circumstances.

If it was a high of 60 degrees yesterday and 70 today this does not mean the truth changed. Even though it is 70 degrees today, it is still true that it was 60 degrees yesterday. Changing of the circumstances did not change the truth but a new true circumstance instead was created.

And when people talk about your truth and my truth they are not talking about real truth, but merely their own perception of the truth, which could be miles from the actual true reality.

Thus when people talk about relative truth they are merely talking about relative perception and not truth itself.

What we perceive and interpret to be truth is often far from the real truth.

So then, where does the corruption of truth fit in, especially in today’s world where we have the most pervasive political war going on in recorded history?

Is one side all right and the other all wrong?

That is not the problem. The problem is that a corruption of truth causes them to see things so differently that they cannot reach reasonable compromise.

And what causes this corruption?

It is the mixture of truth and error on both sides. Let us say there are ten main points in an argument and seven are true. Three are not true at all but give the appearance of truth. These three can corrupt the presentation of the seven items that are true.

Then in other cases an ironclad truth may be presented that runs counter to a bias. In this case the bias person will ignore or dismiss the truth.

To escape corruption, that which has been proven to be true must be separated from that which is theory or opinion. Uncorrupted truth must be the driver of conclusion rather than opinion or personality reaction.

Let us focus on a specific truth.

It is indeed a true fact that for the truth of a dispute to be fully revealed that both sides have to be presented. If only one side is allowed to be heard then much that is true will be suppressed.

For instance, in the days of Galileo it was believed that the earth was the center of the universe and anyone who made an argument to the contrary risked his freedom or life. Then along came Galileo with his telescope which gave them absolute proof they were wrong. Well, there is nothing more dangerous than proving an accepted authority wrong and he was attacked and forced to recant.

Fortunately, the truth was not entirely suppressed for many others made telescopes and saw for themselves that Galileo was correct.

But imagine how much different the world would be today if the Vatican scientists had their way and were totally successful in only allowing one side to be discussed. We may still be struggling in the dark ages.

There are many today who are like the Vatican scientists who think the truth is settled and no other discussion need be allowed. Many want to go so far as criminalizing speech and ideas they do not want to hear.

Today many in the media are banning or censoring opinions and even hard facts they do not want to hear.

Let us pick one that crosses political boundaries – the vaccination debate.

The leader voicing skepticism toward the vaccination system is the prominent liberal, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In this opposition he is joined by many conservatives.

The desire of these people seems pretty reasonable. They want to give out all known facts and studies on vaccines as well as have the freedom to accept or reject having them themselves.

Their problem is that the consensus of Big Pharma, the media and many in government is that the truth is settled, the skeptics are dangerous and their views need to be suppressed.

Big Pharma uses some truth in their presentations to make the case that free speech is dangerous and needs to be controlled. This results in the many arms of the media banning any presentation that even hints that any vaccine or multiples thereof are dangerous.

Now another may agree in this case but state that opposition of his pet belief is indeed dangerous and does need to be suppressed.

This has been the disproven throughout history and the result of suppression has always been an increase in darkness rather than light.

We need to let all views be heard and have faith that the common sense of the people will prevail.

Consider how the Ku Klux Klan was destroyed of its power in the latter 1920s. It was not weakened because of restrictions of speech but through free expression. Their deeds were exposed and their ideas ridiculed, often with humor. The KKK lost in the realm of free expression of ideas and their results.

We are drifting away from this to where opposing ideas are seen as dangerous and need to be suppressed at best or prosecuted at worst.

The elements of truth are found in both sides of a disagreement so to minimize the corrupt use of the true elements on the dominating side the challenging side must be able to express their views as well.

Repetition and Higher Reception

Repetition and Higher Reception

The concept of repetition seems to need some clarification.

The type of repetition avoided by the Higher Lives are the major teachings which are given out which are intended for eventual worldwide circulation.

Take for example the writings of Djwhal Khul through Alice A. Bailey. Even after a generation since her death the writings have only reached a very small percentage of the people of the United States, let alone the world. While it is true that many astral channelers try and copy them, the Masters themselves do not repeat these same teachings through other messengers because a true seeker will eventually find them out. Then too, eventually these writings will permeate the earth just as the Bible has.

Remember that all the books of the Bible started out by being circulated among a very small select group of people.

When you are given a direction to follow from the Spirit through the soul, and you do not follow it, the communication becomes stagnant until you decide to follow. It is possible that after a long period of time and you have learned to accept the direction that you may be reminded once again. This is because you must follow the last communication from the Spirit before you will be given more.

The higher lives only repeat themselves when it is absolutely necessary, but usually what appears to be a repetition is merely an amplification of what was said before.

Yes, many yearn for the voice of Christ to speak to them on a regular basis and give them assurance they are headed the right direction.

But consider this.

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are One God and because they are one it makes no difference if Christ is standing before you speaking, or if the still small voice whispers within. The intelligence will be the same.

Higher differentiations come as the energy pedals of your centers unfold. As they unfold like flowers the disciple will find that he becomes more and more able to tune into the higher energies wielded by the Masters and other Higher Lives.

Comment: “Sometimes I sense a Presence or see a light, or feel something that otherwise feels like Soul Contact or some kind of visitation, but there is not always a message. Sometimes I just feel intense love from that Presence towards me. I was under the impression that there was always supposed to be a message, and it was intended for a group, not just an individual, but there’s no message.”

You are going through a preparation period my friend. Take heart and get ready for things to come.

A Master, or perhaps your soul, has sensed that your consciousness is ahead of your energy unfoldment so he is sending you a charge of energy to which you must adjust. This will cause several energy pedals to unfold faster than normal. After you adjust to the energy you will receive more inspiration about your mission and your communication without the use of words will be increased..

Usually when the disciple receives this new energy he is somewhat confused and not sure what is happening. Just seek to tune in as you adjust.
