Belief and Faith

Question: Since the soul represents the voice of God should we even question it?

JJ: The trouble is that we have two voices within. The first is a voice created by the emotional/astral self. This was that which was called in the Bible “the heart which is deceitful above all things.” This does not represent the true heart energies but is the closest thing to it until the energy of spiritual love is recognized.

Many people seek the inner voice for lifetimes and the highest they achieve is the astral voice that always leads them to upside down truths and keeps them in illusion.

The seeker must question all things, including the astral inner voice before he can find the sure voice of the soul.

Then when he first discovers the true voice he will have difficulty in accepting it as real at first and will question its reality. It is only after the true voice proves itself a number of times that the seeker finally accepts it as reliable and begins to trust it. After he has proven its reliability and trusts it the power of the voice is increased until it becomes strong enough that there is no question that the seeker is hearing the true voice when it comes.

A sure reliance on the true voice will take a number of lifetimes and for the seeker who has mastered it in the past – he will still have to remaster it in the current life – though it could be much quicker because he doesn’t have to start from scratch.

A reader quoting me: “He who masters intuition knows, and knows that he knows, and knows why he knows.” How could one really believe someone could be raised from the dead?

Martha had already seen Jesus perform a lot of miracles and this increased her faith. To her credit the inner voice confirmed that Jesus could raise Lazarus and she accepted this.

But before the seeker will master intuition he will mistake the astral voice many times for the true voice. After all, he has nothing to compare the astral voice to until he hears and recognizes the true voice.

Question: Was Joseph Smith killed because he did not listen or was skeptical of the inner voice?

JJ: He wasn’t skeptical of the inner voice. He knew he should have followed it but the pressure from his wife, brother and others just got the best of him and he ignored the voice to his peril.

Reader comment: For the rest of my life and the next and next one, I am supposed to question all of JJ’s teachings, all of Jesus teachings and all of the DK teachings, just in case they are all wrong?

JJ It doesn’t matter if God himself is speaking. Question anything that doesn’t make sense and seek understanding until you can make sense of a thing and have it register positive with your soul. I question DK regularly and this helps me see his teachings from a wider angle.

On the other hand, do not be so skeptical that the mind slays the real. For instance, when I come across something DK says that does not make sense I realize that there may be a part of the picture I do not see and attempt to put the picture together as whole as possible. The disciple must realize that the Higher Lives do see reality from a higher point of vision than ourselves.

Reader: If I was to continuously question that which I know is true, then I will never truly believe in myself or my ability to know truth via soul.

JJ: Use the things you are sure is true as a foundation, but every so often one must reexamine himself and question all things. I do this with myself. If I didn’t do this I would probably still be a regular church member as when I was younger I was very sure that I was on the path of highest knowledge, but because I was open to all things I discovered I was wrong and reset my compass.

However, the true principles that were confirmed by my soul when I was younger are still true today. I just needed a path correction and needed the realization that the soul only gives you the portion of a picture that you can handle at the time.

The Mystery of Illusion

Many students of the Ancient Wisdom show particular interest in the initiations as taught by Madame Blavatsky and Alice A. Bailey. There are seven initiations possible on this planet but only a small handful have gone beyond the first two, and a much smaller handful have gone beyond the fifth, where one becomes a Master of Wisdom and progresses from the human kingdom to enter the ranks of the Spiritual Hierarchy.

The initiations are milestones of achievement or mastery on the path of liberation from all limitations.

The first initiation, symbolized by the birth of the Christ in the heart, represents reasonable mastery of the physical appetites and passion. The second, symbolized by the baptism of Christ, represents reasonable mastery over the emotional nature and the glamour aspects of the ego. The third, symbolized by the transfiguration of the Christ, represents reasonable mastery of illusion, freedom from glamor and a secure connection with the Higher Self and the One with who we live and love and have our being.

I use the word “reasonable” here because the effects of passion, the ego and illusion remain a part of that ocean of existence in which we live no matter how advanced disciples are. This particularly applies to illusion, the most difficult of the obstacles to completely overcome, but at the third initiation the disciple obtains a clarity of vision that allows him discern true reality from the false and perceive the real world of meaning.

The three worlds of form, the physical, the astral-emotional and the mental are all created out of illusionary principles and all living within them, even the Masters, are subject to some type of illusion, but the first major step out of illusion occurs at the third initiation. At this time the disciple makes a higher spiritual connection that allows him to throw light on what is perceived in the material world. He is thus enabled to see the truth behind various teachings, philosophies, events and ideas to the extent that the spirit within will affirm he is going the right direction. In addition to this he or she is committed to that direction. Concerning this achievement DK speaks of “the third initiation, at which time all glamour and illusion is dissipated and “the light which shines through the eye of the Bull (third eye) will be unimpeded” and carry light into the darkness. Esoteric Astrology, Pages 383-384

Even though the first two initiations are important milestones the third is particularly significant to the extent it is called the first major initiation. Concerning this DK says this:

“I would here remind you that the third initiation is regarded by the Hierarchy as the first major initiation, and that the first and second initiations are initiations of the Threshold. For the bulk of humanity, these first two initiations will for a very long time constitute major initiatory experiences, but in the life and realisation of the initiate-soul, they are not. After the two initiations of the threshold have been undergone the attitude of the initiate changes and he sees possibilities and factors and revelations which have hitherto been totally unrealised and unknown, even to his consciousness at his highest moments”. Rays and Initiations, Pages 41-42

“The third initiation is, in reality, the first initiation of the soul, after complete identification with the personality within the life and consciousness of the Monad, the One and the First.” Destiny of the Nations Page 141

There are two main reasons that the third initiation is called “the first major initiation from the hierarchical angle.” The first as noted in the above quote is that “glamour and illusion is dissipated.”

Most glamor is subdued after passing the second and mastered by the third. Correspondingly, most illusion from this world is under control by the third with some higher illusion yet to be subdued: “After that (the third initiation), he may suffer from illusion, but there is then no fear of his permanently turning back and reaching the left-hand path.” Rays and Initiations, Page 156

The second reason it is the first major one is it invokes the highest spiritual centre on our planet, Shamballa” and “now starts off upon the way of the higher unfoldment, of which the first step is contact with Shamballa, involving the fusion of his self-will and his spiritual will with the Will of God.” Rays and Initiations, Page 81

After the third then he establishes a link with his monad and his lower will is in alignment with higher will.

Until these two things take place the seeker “is still regarded as a potential hazard and as unstable.” Rays and Initiations, Page 156

It is easily understandable why the merging of the lower and higher will would produce stability and trust from the hierarchy, but it is not so clear why the disciple must go beyond the mastering of maya and glamor before he is trusted by the higher lives. Why is the mastering of illusion so important?

The Importance of Mastering Illusion

Have you ever met a person who seems intelligent, sincere, has good self-control and seems to be a decent person in every way but then as you get to know him or her you discover that he has some really oddball beliefs that are obviously false and contrary to normal reasoning? Maybe he believes in a flat earth or a crazy guru but other beliefs seem logical.

As you get to know people more intimately you will discover that this characteristic is much more common than realized. A large number of sincere, but intelligent people have some really odd and illogical beliefs. Some of them are harmless, but then others are not. If your friend believes some crazy guru is the messiah who may want him to drink poison Kool-Aid to reach heaven then such an illusion can turn out to be not so harmless, but even deadly.

Do you think that all the Nazis who embraced their jobs at death camps did so because they were naturally evil and had a destructive nature?

No. The average Nazi was no more evil in nature than the average guy in your neighborhood. The difference was that his mind embraced an illusion to which your neighbors have not been subject. If a Germain Nazi saw a neighbor in trouble he probably was as willing to help as your neighbors are today

The problem with Nazi Germany was not that the people were bad people, but that many had embraced an illusion that controlled them.

It is interesting that many today feel superior to those with destructive illusionary beliefs of the past, such as the Nazis, slave holders and religious zealots who burned heretics at the stake, but if you can buy into any illusion today, even a harmless one, you could also be subject to a crazy one in the right circumstances.

The Milgram experiment illustrates perhaps the greatest flaw in our human nature as far as illusion is concerned. Most of us are willing to conform to authority if that authority project5s the illusion of being right and accepted. Milgram’s experiment illustrates how it is that often we see that 100% of the Republicans vote with their side and 100% of the Democrats vote with their side even though one choice is always better for the country than the other.

Back in the Sixties Milgram was curious about how a group of apparently normal people like the Germans could have participated in the Nazi atrocities, which was against every moral teaching that they ever believed in. Their excuse was always the same: “I was just following orders.”

To get the answer he created an experiment where so-called “teachers” (who were actually the unknowing subjects of the experiment) were recruited by Milgram. They were asked to administer an electric shock of increasing intensity to a “learner” for each mistake he made during the experiment. The fictitious story given to these “teachers” was that the experiment was exploring effects of punishment (for incorrect responses) on learning behavior. The “teacher” was not aware that the “learner” in the study was actually an actor – – merely indicating discomfort as the “teacher” increased the electric shocks.

When the “teacher” asked whether increased shocks should be given he/she was verbally encouraged to continue. Sixty-five percent of the “teachers” obeyed orders to punish the learner to the very end of the 450-volt scale! No subject stopped before reaching 300 volts!

At times, the worried “teachers” questioned the experimenter, asking who was responsible for any harmful effects resulting from shocking the learner at such a high level. Upon receiving the answer that the experimenter assumed full responsibility, teachers seemed to accept the response and continue shocking, even though some were obviously extremely uncomfortable in doing so.

What was interesting about watching this was that when the subject hit the high voltage the pretended victim screamed like crazy and even said he had a bad heart and that the experiment was killing him.

The subject then turned to the authority as if asking what to do and the authority told him to continue. If the subject seemed to doubt the authority told him that he would take responsibility.

Then the subject continued to shock the supposed victim past 300 volts until he went silent. This indicated the victim was either unconscious or dead. Still the subject did not cease. He continued to increase the voltage clear up to 450 which would mean that if the victim was not dead yet this would surely kill him.

The interesting thing is that if this were a real happening, the subject would not only have killed another human being which was against every teaching that he believed in, but he would have also been brought up on murder charges. It is scary that even that possibility did not deter the subject from following authority.

The funny thing about these experiments is that the scientists predicted that only one out of a thousand would follow an authority to shock up to 450 volts, but 65% went that far and 100% of the subjects went up to 300 volts, which is still enough to kill.

Why was it that these subjects committed an act that any impartial observer would see as virtual insanity?

They were under the strong illusion of authority – an authority that would seemingly absolve them of any responsibility.

But the idea that we can transfer the responsibility of our actions to another is based on an illusion – an illusion that an alarming number will accept.

Milgram illustrated an illusion that can easily capture the human mind, but there are many more – and many of them run contrary to the prevailing authorities. The flat earth is a prime example. This runs strongly against current scientific authority yet polls show that about 12% of the public in the United States accept it and another 10% are not sure. Those who embrace it often use a literal interpretation of the Bible or an intriguing explanation presented on the internet. They have allowed the idea to take a foothold in their mind and become trapped in an illusion from which escape is difficult.

The problem with moving to the third initiation is that the illusions facing the disciple are not obvious. When we look with hindsight the illusions with the Milgram experiment, the Nazis and the slaveholders etc. are obvious. They are obvious to us but not to those who lived in the middle of the illusion. Similarly, we live in the midst of many illusions and the ones embraced by the average seeker do not seem obvious at all.

The disciple must learn “to substitute the pure reason for the many complexities of the lower mind. He has to wrestle with the problem of this simplicity, with its penetrating potency, and with its swift comprehension of the basic truth underlying the many truths; he learns, finally, to substitute the intuition—with its swiftness and its infallibility—for the slow and laborious work of the mind, with its deviousness, its illusions, its errors, its dogmatisms and its separative thinking and cultures.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 415

The Dangers of Illusion

The average person is subject to many illusions. Fortunately, most of them do not pose any imminent danger. For instance, many are under the illusion that they are more intelligent, more objective, more reasonable, better looking or more talented than they really are. Such illusions may cause some distraction and poor judgment but are generally not seen as dangerous.

But here is the problem. If a person can be captivated by a small harmless illusion then this indicates that he could also wind up embracing illusions that are much bigger and indeed harmful.

If you can be fooled in small things then the chances are that you can be fooled in big things. It is thus important, especially for disciples aspiring to tread the Path, to dispel all illusions small and great.

At the third initiation the disciple accomplishes two things. He dispels illusion that distract from the Path and secures contact with his Higher Self. These are two essential accomplishments that must be made before he or she can be trusted by the Spiritual Hierarchy.

First and second degree initiates are generally sincere and honorable people seeking the Spiritual Path, but all that sincerity can turn dangerous if their minds are captivated by a dangerous illusion.

Many of the most destructive people in our history were sincere in thinking they were doing the right thing but had minds enslaved by illusions that led them in a terrible direction.

For instance, Hitler really believed that the Jews were the source of many of the world’s problems and the world would be much better off if they were all disposed of. In this case, sincerely greatly amplified the problem of the illusion rather than diminishing it.

Marshall Applewhite was the leader of the Heaven’s Gate movement and was very sincere in guiding his group toward immortality. Then when the comet Hale–Bopp appeared in 1997 he took it as a sign that their transformation to a higher form of existence was at hand. He believed that a spaceship was accompanying the comet that they could only access through death. So, when the comet made its closest approach he and 38 other true believers killed themselves in order to ascend.

The fact that none of the 38 backed out or saw through the illusion demonstrates the powerful hold an illusion can have on a group.

To an outsider it seems completely obvious that Applewhite was in illusion approaching insanity, but to the inner group there was no filtering out that which was not reasonable and to them all seemed to be a part of a wonderful plan.

Then we had an even greater demonstration of the power of a negative illusion in 1978 when Jim Jones of the People’s Temple order his group of 900 souls to drink poisoned Kool-Aid.

Most people think they are beyond being captured by such a negative illusion, but remember that those participating in the Milgram Experiment were just average folks placed in an unusual circumstance, and all of them were willing to shock the victims with a very dangerous 300 volts, and the majority were willing to kill the victims with 450 volts.

This tells us that the average guy who we see as harmless may not be harmless at all if placed in the right circumstance and subjected to a destructive illusion.

Consistent soul contact is the solution to dispelling illusion, but sporadic contact where the ideas are filtered through the personality self can actually increase illusion. DK says this:

“The world of phenomena is not denied, but we regard the mind as misinterpreting it and as refusing to see it as it is in reality. We consider this misinterpretation as constituting the Great Illusion… The Problem of Illusion lies in the fact that it is a soul activity, and the result of the mind aspect of all the souls in manifestation. It is the soul which is submerged in the illusion and the soul that fails to see with clarity until such time as it has learnt to pour the light of the soul through into the mind and the brain.” Glamour, A World Problem, Page 21

Soul contact actually brings down ideas from the higher planes but if those ideas are distorted by the lower emotions and the mind then their implementation can be more destructive than constrictive. To counteract this problem the disciple must learn “to pour the light of the soul through into the mind and the brain.”

In that same book he says that “Illusion, for our purposes, can be understood to signify the reaction of the undisciplined mind to the newly contacted world of ideas.” Page 54

That which is received from higher contact must be interpreted with a disciplined mind or that which was not illusion will be presented as illusion and distorted from the original idea received.

This problem “tends to preoccupy him and to lead him into danger and error. It retards his progress on the way and sidetracks his energies and attention.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Page 473

The ideal of communism is a good example of how this plays out. The idea of universal sharing and equality is good and the slogan “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs,” seems in harmony with divine principles. But the problem of communism stems not from the idea itself, but from a distorted interpretation of it along with a destructive path that destroys free will. Communist leaders such as Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jung Un and others decree its truth and anyone who has a different opinion is either imprisoned or murdered.

This we have an idea which could take humankind toward an improved life being distorted into something seen as a great evil by many.

This distortion of divine ideas is a problem had by many as they approach the third initiation. Instead of seeing correctly and crossing the threshold they allow the lower mind and emotions to distort divine ideas and set them back for lifetimes where they have to first learn some painful lessons.

And concerning the pain along the journey to liberation DK said this:

“Pain is that upward struggle through matter which lands a man at the Feet of the Logos; pain is the following of the line of the greatest resistance and thereby reaching the summit of the mountain; pain is the smashing of the form and the reaching of the inner fire; pain is the cold of isolation which leads to the warmth of the central sun; pain is the burning in the furnace in order finally to know the coolness of the water of life; pain is the journeying into the far country, resulting in the welcome to the Father’s Home; pain is the illusion of the Father’s disowning, which drives the prodigal straight to the Father’s heart; pain is the cross of utter loss, that renders back the riches of the eternal bounty; pain is the whip that drives the struggling builder to carry to utter perfection the building of the Temple.” A Treatise on White Magic, Pg 533

If the disciple can see through the illusion much pain can be avoided, but if not, sometimes the only way the soul can get his attention and make corrections is through painful experience.

Illusion and the New Age

Let us now examine in more depth that which DK teaches about illusion. He distinguishes it from glamor and maya. These two aspects will intensify illusion but are different obstacles to overcome. One may be basically free of these two things but be subject to illusion which is a trick of the mind. DK says this:

“The story of illusion is one which must not be confounded with glamour; illusion is related to the whole process of revelation. Glamour can be and often is related to the distortion of that which has been revealed, but it must be borne in mind that illusion is primarily concerned with the reaction of the mind to the unfolding revelation, as the soul registers it and seeks to impress it on the highest aspect of the personal lower self. Illusion is, therefore, the failure of the mind correctly to register, to interpret or translate that which has been transmitted and it is consequently a sin (if you care for that word) of the intelligent and highly developed people, of those who stand on the Path and who are in process of becoming rightly oriented; it is also a sin of accepted disciples as they seek to expand their consciousness in response to soul contact. When they have “seen through illusion” (and I use this phrase in its esoteric sense) then they are ready for the third initiation.” Glamour, A World Problem, Pages 172-173

When DK speaks of illusion, he is referring to something more specific than the general meaning in English which is merely “a belief in something that is not true.” The average person believes all kinds of things that are not true, but illusion as it pertains to the disciple is concerned with things that are not true which distract us from the path as stated in the Gayatri:

“Unveil to us the face of the true spiritual Sun, hidden by a disk of golden light, that we may know the truth and do our whole duty, as we journey to Thy sacred Feet.”

There are two sources of illusion that take the advanced seeker off the path. Let me first repeat from the above quote:

“illusion is primarily concerned with the reaction of the mind to the unfolding revelation, as the soul registers it and seeks to impress it on the highest aspect of the personal lower self. Illusion is, therefore, the failure of the mind correctly to register, to interpret or translate that which has been transmitted.”

The average person is not subject to this type of illusion because he is not receiving “unfolding revelation.”

The advanced seeker does achieve some soul contact, receives revelation, but until he learns to keep his mind steady in the light he fails to correctly “interpret or translate that which has been transmitted.”

The second source of illusion that is discussed originates from thoughtforms that circulate in the consciousness of the human kingdom. Concerning them he says this:

“Illusion is the succumbing to the powerful thoughtforms which the thinkers of the time and of the immediately preceding age have formulated, and which at the time of their creation constituted the hope of the race. They embodied then the new and emerging ideas by means of which the race was intended to progress. These forms, when old and crystallised, become a menace and a hindrance to the expanding life.” Glamour, A World Problem, Page 112

There are two types of thoughtforms which cause illusion. The first are ideas or teachings related to the “preceding age.” That would be the Age of Pisces. These are teachings that are either distorted or outlived their usefulness and have “become a menace and a hindrance to the expanding life.”

Sacrifice was the keynote of the passing age and sacrificing all for a future reward in heaven moved the work forward in the past, but the idea is a hinderance in this age.

Why?

Because the age of Aquarius is not to be the time of scarcity, but “Aquarius is the water-carrier, bringing the water of life to the people — life more abundantly.” Destiny of the Nations, Page 150

Here DK was referring to the fulfillment of the words of Jesus where he said:

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

The second thoughtform which has outlived its usefulness is connected with the quality of idealism and perfection associated with Pisces.

Christ was associated with the perfect man, far beyond what we may become making us completely dependent on him to save us. Today the emphasis needs to be on “the fact of the spiritual Hierarchy, upon the office and the work of the Christ and upon the techniques of meditation whereby soul-awareness (or the Christ-consciousness) can be achieved. Prayer has been expanded into meditation; desire has been lifted into mental aspiration. This is supplanted by a sense of unity and by the recognition of God immanent. This leads eventually to at-one-ment with God transcendent.” Problems of Humanity, Pages 156-157

“Today, as an outcome of this unfolding divine Presence, there is entering into the minds of men everywhere a new concept: that of Christ in us, the hope of Glory. There is a growing and developing belief that Christ is in us, as He was in the Master Jesus, and this belief will alter world affairs and mankind’s entire attitude to life.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 592

Thoughtforms of the past are not the only problem for there are many newer thoughtforms created around the of Aquarius that lead to illusion.

We previously mentioned the Heaven’s Gate group who thought they had yield up their lives to enter into the heavenly spheres, but perhaps the most dominate illusion in which many aspirants are caught involves the idea that they need do nothing but wait for the Christ, the Hierarchy, space beings, angels – anyone other than themselves to do the hard work in bringing the new age. DK has made it clear that the responsibility for manifesting a beneficial new are lies with humanity itself. We have to do our part to manifest abundance or it will not happen. DK’s advice during World War II applies today:

“Blame yourselves, therefore, for what is today transpiring and seek not to evade responsibility by placing it upon the shoulders of spectacular men or any statesmen, dictator or upon any group. Look not to one person or to one group of persons and accuse them of causing the present world condition. Look not also to any one person or group to bring liberation or to find a solution of the world problem. That is for humanity itself to do. Humanity must take action and will do so, when the right time comes.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 135

Illusion in Our Sources

It may be helpful to examine some actual examples of illusion that distract seekers from finding the truth. Illusion becomes a huge factor as the pilgrim seeks to find sources of truth.

It is a commonly accepted truth among spiritual seekers that the greatest source of truth is within, yet the within factor only takes us so far and generally most seekers have to look without to find the truth they desire. Wise seekers eventually come to realize they must search without, but verify within, as not much pure revelation come purely from within.

The seeker comes across avalanches of illusion as he seeks from without, and for the beginner the universal mistake that is made is a lack of verification. The factor of common sense would rule out much illusion, but this is often not put to use. After one has done everything possible to verify truth, the final factor has to be verification from within, but even this is not always reliable.

As the seeker looks within, he finds the lower concrete mind will give answers, but they are often incorrect. Then he also finds the desire nature which distorts he truth and will usually give the answer he wants rather than the truth. To get real verification the seeker must reach the soul, but the problem is that he does not know how that feels until he makes that contact. Until that occurs, he will assume the highest of his desire nature represents the soul and can verify truth.

Spiritual students seek the truth, but each has different resources available and many of them are distracted by illusion. To discover their illusion we must examine their source.

For millions it is the Bible. The problem is that there are thousands of Christian sects and each has a different interpretation. They cannot even agree on what a day is in Genesis. Is it a 24-hour period or a cycle of time?

For the alternative spiritual students, the main source usually consists of channeled materials. DK divides channeling into two categories, conscious and unconscious. He tells us that the masters, except on rare occasions, only use disciples who receive in the conscious state and says this about the ones who use the unconscious trance state:

“Some transmitters work entirely on astral levels and their work is necessarily part of the great illusion. They are unconscious mediums and are unable to check the source from whence the teachings come; if they claim to know that source, they are frequently in error. Some receive teaching from discarnate entities of no higher evolution, and frequently of lower, than themselves. Some are simply abstracting the content of their own subconsciousnesses.” A Treatise on White Magic, Pg 175

Examples of unconscious channelers are Edgar Cayce, Mark & Elizabeth Clare Prophet, J. Z. Knight, The Law of One Books, Seth Speaks by Jane Roberts, the Urantia book and many lesser examples currently circulating on the internet.

The other method is conscious reception through mental telepathy from the Source. This is the preferred method used by advanced beings and this was used by Djwahl Khul to transmit his many writings to Alice A. Bailey. Others who have used this method are H. P. Blavatsky, Helen Schucman who received A Course in Miracles, Rudolf Steiner, Emanuel Swedenborg and Joseph Smith.

What complicates things is that even conscious channelers are not always right for they could be picking up material from a distorted thoughtform, a deceptive entity or from their own imagination.

Then there is a third group of mediums who allow another entity to take possession but retain some memory of what has transpired. I would classify their accuracy in the same category as the unconscious channelers.

Overall, the conscious channeler is more reliable but none are infallible and may be the source of illusion to the seeker. All upon the path must learn to access the intuition and attain the soul contact necessary to attain correct perception:

“When the intuition functions in any human being, he is enabled to take direct and correct action for he is in touch with the Plan, with pure and unadulterated fact and undistorted ideas—free from illusion and coming direct from the divine or universal Mind.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 25

What complicates illusion for the advanced students is that they strive with more energy and “the glamour and the illusion which a disciple can evoke is far more potent than that of the average person… when a man becomes a disciple, he contacts so much force (especially in the early stages when he does not know how to handle it) that he attracts, consolidates and precipitates upon himself far more of the world illusion than would otherwise be the case.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 509-511

This explains why many students and teachers we encounter seem to be intelligent yet have beliefs that most 12-year-olds can see is wrong. When an advanced person has an illusion he tends to embrace it with more energy than the average person.

Hitler was a great example. The illusion that the Jewish race needed to be eliminated, even if by gassing them all to death, seems absolutely insane, but it didn’t seem that way to those who participated in the illusion – and we might add that these people were no dummies, just intelligent people who were misled.

It is a very deceptive thing that when one is trapped by an illusion that no illusion is perceived. It’s like having cancer, but not being aware of it. However, the problem does not go away and sooner or later the pilgrim must face the truth.

Idealism and Illusion

Idealism is another quality which draws many into illusion. Its potency is particularly powerful at the present as it represented one of the key aspects of the Piscean age which is passing. When entering a new age, the masses are reluctant to accept the new energies and tend to cling to the old. We are entering Aquarius, which is related to air, mind, reason and service and leaving Pisces which is related to water, emotion, the ideal and sacrifice.

Think of the passing sign as an entity fighting for its life and that’ll give you an idea as to why we see such struggles in the world where many are fighting for their ideal picture of life as they see it. Often it comes down to one ideal fighting against another ideal.

At the beginning of an age enlightened teachings are given out by avatars of the age, but then after a time, corruption sets in and that which was good becomes that which is the enemy of the aspects of the next age. We thus had sixth ray idealism as something that beneficially launched the Age of Pisces, but now we are entering Aquarius it has become a drag on the approaching changes. DK speaks of this:

“I would here remind you that few idealists are personally in touch with the idea which has given birth to the idealism. They are only in touch with the human interpretation of the idea, as formulated by some disciple or intuitive—a very different thing.

“An illusion can, therefore, be defined as the consequence of an idea (translated into ideal) being regarded as the entire presentation, as the complete story or solution and as being separated from and visioned independently of all other ideas…When visioned and grasped in a narrow and separative manner, there is necessarily a distortion of the truth, and the disciple or aspirant inevitably pledges himself to a partial aspect of reality or of the Plan and not to the truth as far as it can be revealed or to the Plan as the Members of the Hierarchy know it.” Glamour, A World Problem, Page 131

Then on the next page he adds this:

“They need to learn to penetrate to the true idea which lies behind their ideal and to interpret it with accuracy in the light of their soul.”

The truths of the passing age are still there, but as the great wheel of the ages turns their application changes and new truths must be realized and embraced.

A profound example of illusion involving the ideal was stressed by DK during World War II. He noted that there was a significant portion of the population who were pacifists and believed in remaining aloof from the conflict, thinking that sending loving vibes and trusting in God’s will was the best thing to do.

DK had quite critical words for these people stating that in some situations, such as World War II “civilisation had to meet force with force.”

“Humanity having decided to fight out the battle physically, there was nothing left to do but issue a challenge to the men and women of goodwill to take their stand on the side of such action as would release humanity through the destruction of the evil forces. These had determined to prove that might was right. Therefore, the forces fighting for progress and civilisation had to meet force with force.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 178

He further said:

“Such people are like a millstone around the neck of humanity, crippling true effort, murmuring, ‘Let us love God and each other,’ but doing nothing but murmur prayers and platitudes whilst humanity is dying.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Pages 345-346

Then he sums up his thoughts quite succinctly here:

“It is this right attitude on the part of the Forces of Light which has an undesirable effect upon the appeasers and pacifists of the world. These would, for humanitarian reasons and from love of the forms through which humanity functions, bring the war to an immediate end.

“In their well-meaning blindness they would sacrifice the future of humanity and the lives of millions of people at a later date for a temporary cessation of hostilities. I would emphasise to you that the Forces of Evil must be defeated now; the evil leaders must be wrenched from their high place, and the complete defeat and annihilation of those responsible for launching this horror on humanity is an absolute necessity and bounden duty, if security, well-being and a new order of happier living is to be the lot of coming generations.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 426

The sayings of Solomon are eternally true that “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven… a time of war, and a time of peace.” Eccl 3:1 & 8

And even of the Christ it was written that “in righteousness he doth judge and make war.” Rev 19:11

DK has indicated that the Hierarchy usually takes no side in the various wars of history because it often makes little difference as to who wins, but in the case of World War II it was of extreme importance that The Nazis and Axis powers be defeated. When such a situation occurs attempting to be a pacifist or neutral becomes an example of great illusion for it is “Through humanity, alone and unaided (except by the divine Spirit in every human being), can the ‘door where evil dwells be sealed.’” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 159

A few pages later he says:

“The ‘door where evil dwells’ is kept open by humanity through its selfish desire, its hatreds and its separateness, by its greed and its racial and national barriers, its low personal ambitions and its love of power and cruelty.”

He really is disgusted by those with spiritual aspirations who do not lend support in the physical plane to shutting the door where evil dwells:

“Every nation has also within it those neutrally-minded people who fail to think clearly, who seek to place the blame upon the shoulders of all except themselves, who theorise and speculate, advise, and assign responsibility, but who refrain from any active participation in the processes of adjustment, from reasons of pride or unwillingness to pay the price.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 216

On the other hand, disciples must realize that illusion in this category goes both ways. Abraham Lincoln, for example was an avatar for the forces of light and was seen as evil by half the country and Jesus and other messengers were attacked and killed.

Where good vs. evil is at stake, he says “The Hierarchy is not neutral.” Destiny of the Nations, Page 65

Disciples however must be diligent in choosing correctly. Imagine how embarrassing it would be when having a life review to discovered that you fought against the good guy and supported keeping the door to evil open.

“Whenever there is a withering of the law and an uprising of lawlessness on all sides, then I manifest Myself. For the salvation of the righteous and the destruction of such as do evil, for the firm establishing of the Law, I come to birth age after age.” The Bhagavad Gita, Book IV, Sutra 7, 8.

True Faith

True Faith

Here are some previous comments I have made on faith in the past. The quintessential definition is given in Hebrews 11. When using the Greek one can see that Paul’s definition of faith corresponds very closely with the one I have given.

In the New Testament faith comes from PISTIS which is derived from the root word PEITHO which basically means “to prove a thing true or false by evidence, argument, reason or experiment and through the guidance of your inner authority.”

Those who boast of great religious faith remind me a lot of a neophyte in a multi-level marketing program. When entering the program they are pumped full of zeal by various distributors. I have met many of those individuals who think they are going to make a million dollars or so in the next year and they have unshakable faith that this will happen. But sooner or later hard facts and reality hits them and they realize that to be even moderately successful they will have to devote all their extra energies and efforts to this “part time” business. When faced with this hard fact over ninety per cent lose interest and drop away. I have often met one of these individuals at a later time and asked how their venture was going. Generally, they want to change the subject.

So the born again full-fledged gospel believing Bible thumping proselyter who does not want to apply work, will want to change the subject when his faith is put to the test. If he reads his Bible perhaps this scripture will glare him in the face: “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool.” Proverbs 28:26

Those with unworkable faith merely trust in their heart, or their feelings, which is not faith at all. “Faith” comes from the Greek PISTIS and literally means: “a mental conviction one has proven true by argument or reason”. Thus if one has faith that he will go to heaven he should be able to justify it by logical argumentation. One will notice that Paul, a big believer in faith, spent much of his time in logical argumentation.

The book of Hebrews gives an expanded definition: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

We can again find that the Greek will give us a much clearer translation here. “Substance” comes from HUPOSTASIS and in modern translations it is usually rendered “assurance” or “confidence”, but in reality one English word cannot do it justice. It more literally means “That state of mind which supports an idea through a sustained effort.” “Evidence” comes from ELEGECHOS which means “to prove a matter true or false”. The word indicates that faith establishes the true reality. Thus a clearer translation of this verse would be: “Now faith is having that state of mind which sustains that which is hoped for and reveals the truth of those things we do not see.” This definition corresponds much better with the root meaning of the Greek PISTIS which is translated faith.

If we have faith we can sustain an idea until it is proven true or false. It is never a blind unreasoning belief.

The correct definition of faith should make the word more acceptable to the more enlightened and intelligent persons who were previously repulsed to using it. We see that Edison, for instance, had great faith. He sustained the idea of the light bulb until he proved its validity by making it a physical reality. When faith is sustained on a true principle a physical manifestation occurs. “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed.” Hebrews 11:3

We are also told: “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him” [God]. Hebrews 11:6 Unless we can sustain an idea or conviction and prove it by argument or externalization we cannot please God.

By this scriptural definition of faith, I know of very few pious religious people who have any semblance of faith, but ironically, there are numerous non-religious people who have it.

If those who claim to have faith do not actually have it, then what do they have? After searching through numerous words in the Biblical Greek the closest I can find to match what is commonly miscalled “faith” is BLASPHEMOS which in the English means “blasphemer”.. BLASPHEMOS literally means “to hinder by stating an unfounded, rumored, or unreasonable statement”. Interestingly, most of those who claim to have faith cannot support their belief with any logical foundation or reasoning, but merely repeat what they have been taught. Therefore, instead of having faith they are committing blasphemy.

Question: You talk about male and female energies as being somewhat fluid. Can you explain further

The male is a sending energy and the female receiving. Physical males can definitely be in the female position and females in the male. In the days of Jesus, the male disciples were female to Jesus, but then Jesus was female to the Christ who overshadowed him.

The fact that one is in a male or female body only indicates that over the course of a lifetime that he or she will generally be more in the energy represented by his body than its opposite. But within certain cycles of that life he will be in his opposite energy.

Additional Comments

Question: A Course in Miracles states that there is no order or difference in miracles. This seems to mean that it is just as easy to heal a cancer as it is to heal a mild headache. It is just as easy to heal a threat of nuclear war as it is to heal an argument between two little kids, because they are all the same thing. Would you comment on this?

JJ: ACIM has a strange approach to this. It is obvious that it is more difficult to perform the miracle of bringing peace on earth to the world than healing a headache. But the book tells us that this world is not real and if we find the true reality the world just disappears and then peace on earth is no longer a problem because there is no earth. This seems like an escapist solution as not even the channeler of ACIM had the earth disappear for her. If we had an ACIM reader just disappear from this illusion now and then this statement would have more credibility.

On the other hand, if we look on his world as a dream, as the Course teaches, then in a lucid dream it may be as easy to move a mountain as a small rock because neither exists in the true reality. The problem is that we see them both existing in this reality and the mountain appears to be a much larger obstacle than the rock.

Reader Comment: JJ has said that after we start forming stable molecules, we will need to experiment with different types of molecules with different numbers for different purposes. They will have different numbers of members, and perhaps different mixtures of energies. I would love to be a scientist studying all of this. Maybe we could try an all male molecule and balance it off with an all female molecule, and study them to find out if they serve any useful purpose. That’s just one idea. Another one might be to have 10 male-female couples, one female-female couple and one male-male couple. I’m just speculating. There are probably a lot of combinations that could be tried.

JJ: Seekers will be experimenting with all kinds of combinations. Some will prove to be working molecules with certain qualities and some will not.

All combinations of humans working for the same goal create personality energy, but a molecule will create soul energy and there will be a big difference between the two. Remember to draw down the soul molecular energy the group must be accepted by the Master in charge.

John Lennon a Conservative?

In the Lost Key of the Buddha, it was stated that1ohn Lennon was to become a spokesman for a new round of conservatism, but he was killed before he fulfilled his destiny. Many thought that this was far-fetched because he seemed so ingrained in the liberal mindset.

Now some evidence has come out that he was turning conservative before he died. Take a look.

Is the Molecular Business Practical?

A reader comments: The greatest problem with a corporation is their myopic interest in profit only. So they seem perfectly willing to make sweetheart deals with government giving them special privileges of all kinds such as tax breaks, pollution allowances, and much more. Another difficulty is lack of liability. No owners [shareholders] ever incur any liability if the corporation poisons a bunch of folks or destroys an entire river ecosystem or some other evil thing. How would a molecular business do any better?

JJ The design of the Molecular Business is to first create a more efficient business model that will make a good profit. The second is to put all employees into a more equal relationship and pay. This is done through free will and not force, as today’s liberals so desire. Because the business is employee owned, they will be more flexible. If they all have to take a pay cut to survive, they can take this action or give themselves a raise if there is more profit.

As far as insuring virtuous actions by the corporation there is never any guarantee of that, but the Molecular Business should be more constructive and less destructive than most because:

[1] All employees have a voice and if the leaders get too destructive, they will be voted out and replaced.

[2] Because the company is employee owned there will be a greater sense of responsibility to make good decisions.

[3] As the spiritual molecules grow leaders in the Molecular Businesses will draw from them. These people will have service to humanity as their objective.

Reader: What is the “bottom line” for the molecular business? Profit?

JJ: Profit is the prime objective of any business. If a business cannot make a profit, then it cannot even exist.

Because all employees will be a part of the business I do not expect them to go for a profit at any price but to make a profit doing constructive work.

Reader: Profit-only gives today’s corporations that vacant stare that everyone hates so much.

JJ Modern corporations are not perfect but the hatred you speak of is mostly based in illusion. Many people of today are like programmed robots that do not think for themselves. They need to be educated.

I do not recall any private corporation ever taking anything from me that I didn’t want to give them once in my entire life yet government does this every day

Reader: If a customer slips and falls at the porch of the retail building, does the molecular business take liability?

JJ Of course – a Molecular Business would have to have liability insurance just like any other company.

Reader: Or do they employ the tricks of traditional corporations to avoid responsibility?

JJ: Such things are usually handled by the insurance company rather than the business. And the gouging works both ways. Consumers will often fake injuries and pretend they are worse than they are to get an undeserved settlement.

Reader: That one incident could potentially wipe them out, especially when they are small before much growth.

JJ: That’s why you have insurance.

Reader: If the workers are also owners, then they will end up personally liable for every problem when they go to court? Are the workers not real owners but merely stock holders?

JJ: They are owners through the holding of stock. That does not make them personally liable any more than employees in other corporations.

The Molecular Business was always designed to be like a regular corporation as far as stock is concerned except part of the pay to employees will be in stock. If someone retires and wants to hold on to their stock that is good for the company because it gives them more cash to work with.

Reader: Aren’t you concerned that big business will use underhanded methods to destroy a molecular business if it proves profitable?

JJ: A molecular business would move forward just like the smaller businesses do today. You create a better product and have better service. I’ve been a small business owner most of my life and there are many advantages to being small as well as big. Some small business get destroyed through various practices of large companies but the good ones survive. Steve Jobs started Apple in his garage and no one stopped him. Bill Gates started Microsoft on a shoestring and IBM helped him get started by selling him DOS at a bargain price.

I’m not worried about big business. Government always concerns me though.

Time Travel

I heard this guy on Coast to Coast and his story is pretty amazing. He posts a picture of him at the Gettysburg address. He was only ten years old at the time he says the government sent him back. You can see it here:

This guy either has a heck of an imagination or a great story. The chances that we mastered time travel in the 60s is pretty slim, even if it were possible but it’s a fun story to follow.

I’ve also enjoyed following John Titor. He was close enough on some predictions to be eerie, but did miss on others.

Organic Foods

A reader commented on Penn and Teller’s show which attempted to illustrate that organic foods are no better for you than the regular produce. Here are several points:

[1] They say regular produce tastes as good as organic. There is not a lot of difference in taste in organic or regular apples or bananas no matter how they are grown. These were the worst fruits to use for the test and probably why Penn & Teller used them. Strawberries or watermelons would have provided a lot better taste test as these have a huge difference in taste as the quality goes up. If these are raised in quality live soil with lots of minerals the taste will be very different than the highly commercialized fruit.

[2] They say non organic is just as nutritious as organic. Most of the studies have focused on the vitamin content, but health-conscious people buy organic for the extra minerals more than the vitamins. A Lot of commercial organic farms do not put many minerals back in the soil and have less mineral nutrition than the non-organic.

[3] How fresh the fruit is also makes a huge difference in taste. I notice that a lot of organic food for sale looks quite old and thus would have low nutritional value and not much taste.

A Wise Approach

A reader was reading some apocryphal scriptures and came across some strange doctrines and wanted my opinion.

The important thing here is how we approach the various teachings that are thrown our way. It matters not whether the teachings claim to be from Jesus, DK, an angel, God or some guy in a back alley, the approach must be the same. The seeker must run them by his soul and incorporate that which registers as true, reject that which registers as false and put on the shelf that which does not register one way or another.

It is much easier for many to be objective when analyzing the teachings of a friend, a seminar given by an unknown or a book from the library. But when one comes across something that claims to be the words of Jesus or a revelation from God the pull of authority can be disturbing if the doctrine is strange or repulsive.

From the time that man first learned to write he has produced false teachings and stories and presented them as being from God. These false scriptures outweigh the mostly true ones in number and can create a lot of confusion for seekers trying to harmonize the false with the true.

Some teachers in the East demand that students only learn from themselves, not because they think they have a corner on the truth but because each teacher has his own slant as he seeks to convey truth. If a student has two or more teachers that are given equal weight in his mind, he may wind up going half-crazy trying to see all presentations as true. If one teacher seems to contradict the other the student may get discouraged and quit seeking altogether.

Some of the Gnostic gospels and writings may be as true as many of the scriptures but the key is to not give them any authority unless something taught registers with your soul. When such registration occurs then is the time to recognize authority. And even here you may not be seeing the whole picture so the seeker must always keep an open mind for a greater vision to arrive.

Lucid Dreaming

Reader Comment: I know that DK talks about continuity of consciousness and how when mastered it will change the whole process of death and take the mystery out of it and change the way we die etc. He says to start practicing to maintain consciousness during sleep.

JJ: Yes, DK was talking about continuity of consciousness on the mental plane, not the astral where dreams occur. At sleep our mental self leaves the body and the astral remains. Dreams are produced by the emotional body – this explains why they usually make no sense and you have little power of decision within them.

With Lucid dreaming one forces some consciousness from the mental plane to enter the astral, but this may sacrifice something you were attempting to do on the mental plane.

When the mental self returns on awakening we usually remember nothing it did, but only a few astral dreams. The only way to attain continuity of consciousness is to assiduously apply exercises like DK recommends. If something important is realized on the mental plane during sleep you will attempt to send yourself a message through the dream state so some dreams do have messages. If it is important you will have a serious feeling about the importance of a dream.

Global Warming

Question: What is your view about global warming within the near future?

JJ: I have always said I believe what the data reveals until better data comes along and have stated a number of times that the earth has warmed about one degree in the last 100 years according to land-based measurements. Most global warming skeptics agree with this.

However, I have always been against the global warming alarmists who think this is the end of the world. I think the warming we have had so far has been a good thing. One degree warmer is much better than one degree colder.

I also think most of the warming and cooling is related to natural cycles with human activity contributing some, but not as much as the alarmists say.

I’ve also said that CO2 is a fertilizer and a certain amount of increase will make for a greener healthier planet.

The one thing that should cause some alarm is the decrease of oxygen in our atmosphere, but you do not hear much about that.

I’ve also stated somewhere that we are more likely to be entering a cooling cycle than a warmer one within the next few decades.

Prophecy of Doom

Welcome to 2026 my friends. However, there were many Bailey students who were concerned that we would ever arrive here in one piece because of a prophecy made by Djwahl Khul through Alice A. Bailey. Let us take a look at it and examine what it is really telling us.

“Above everything else required at this time is a recognition of the world of meaning, a recognition of Those Who implement world affairs and Who engineer those steps which lead mankind onward towards its destined goal, plus a steadily increased recognition of the Plan on the part of the masses. These three recognitions must be evidenced by humanity and affect human thinking and action if the total destruction of mankind is to be averted. They must form the theme of all the propaganda work to be done during the next few decades—until the year 2025—a brief space of time indeed to produce fundamental changes in human thought, awareness, and direction, but—at the same time— a quite possible achievement, provided the New Group of World Servers and the men and women of goodwill perform a conscientious task.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 164

This was most probably given out in 1949 and since then most students I have encountered have basically given this interpretation to it:

“Humanity must get their act together or we will destroy ourselves by 2025.”

Now that 2025 has passed does this mean that we have passed a great milestone and we have reached safer ground where we do not have to worry about complete destruction? I kind of went along with this idea myself, but now 2025 has passed I decided to take a closer look at the actual wording of this prophecy.

On taking a closer look I see that 2025 represents the end of a time period of a cycle of activity, not a time where destruction would take place. In other words, he is telling us that the cycle of years between 1949 to 2025 represent a time wherein humanity must come to three recognitions. If we significantly come to those three recognitions then we will have a safe journey to the Age of Aquarius. But if we do not, disaster awaits, or “the total destruction of mankind.”

That is pretty alarming wording and the fact that we have reached 2025 without blowing ourselves up is encouraging, but it does not mean we are out of the woods. Note that he does not associate 2025 with destruction, but the end of the time of opportunity to prevent the destruction.

So what does this tell us?

It merely tells us that if we have sufficiently come to the three recognitions that we will avert destruction, but if we have not then destruction will follow… BUT that destruction wouldn’t necessarily happen in 2025. It could happen decades later, but it would be the result of the cycle that was presented.

Since this cycle and the three recognitions determine our fate, it may be wisdom to ask ourselves if humanity and the disciples within have indeed done their part in fulfilling them so we can move into the new age intact.

So, what are the three recognitions? They are briefly mentioned in the quote as follows:

[1] A recognition of the world of meaning

[2] A recognition of Those Who implement world affairs and Who engineer those steps which lead mankind onward towards its destined goal

[3] A steadily increased recognition of the Plan on the part of the masses.

What is the meaning behind these three recognitions and has humanity significantly achieved them?

Understanding the three criteria is of extreme importance for we are told that, “These three recognitions must be evidenced by humanity and affect human thinking and action if the total destruction of mankind is to be averted.” He also places the responsibility of bringing these recognitions into manifestation on “the New Group of World Servers and the men and women of goodwill.”

If disciples of the world are not clear on what they are then they will not be able to do their part in consciously promoting them.

The first recognition that must permeate humanity is “A recognition of the world of meaning.”

Now I have read the Bailey writings numerous times, but when I took a closer look at this text, I had to admit I was somewhat unclear as to what was meant by the phrase “the world of meaning.” Since it didn’t seem very familiar to me, I figured that DK had probably only used it a couple times, but after an examination of all the Bailey writings I was astonished to discover that it was used 109 times. I was pretty sure I was familiar with any word or phrase he had used more than a half dozen times so I was amazed at how this phrase just went over my head.

I wondered how many other Bailey students missed seeing any significance in this phrase that was obviously intended by DK as an item of importance – since he used it so often.

Let us rectify this omission and take a closer look at the phrase. The phrase by itself is curious because many spiritual and esoteric teachers have pointed out that the world is an illusion and has little meaning. In fact, DK says, “it must constantly be remembered that we are living in the world of illusion—an illusion which is temporary and transient and which will some day disappear.” Education in the New Age Pg 25

If there is any truth to this teaching then the world of meaning must be refer to more than the world we see about us, which DK calls the “world of phenomena.” Indeed he tells us there are two worlds: “the world of objective existence and the inner world of meaning.” Education in the New Age, Page 99

Yes, it is understood there are numerous planes which are often called worlds, but here he is referring to two worlds that deal with our overall perception or understanding.

There is the objective world of which all people are aware. This is the world about us that we all see with our physical eyes. But beyond this is a world of meaning which is important for us to see with eyes of understanding if we are to make sense of the physical world about us.

Basically, DK tells us that all we see happening about us in the physical world are merely symbols, but symbols with meaning behind them. If we do not see the meaning behind the symbols, we will basically be clueless about the life about us and will not be effective in implementing positive change. He gives a good but partial explanation here:

“To recognise the conditioning energies in his environment, seeing them not as events or circumstances but as energy in action; by this means he learns to find his way behind the scene of outer happenings into the world of energies, seeking contact and qualifying for the bringing about of certain activities. He thus acquires entrance into the world of meaning. Events, circumstances, happenings and physical phenomena of every kind are simply symbols of what is occurring in the inner worlds, and it is into these worlds that the esotericist must enter as far as his perception permits.” Education in the New Age, Pages 61-62

When higher vison is achieved “it brings the intuition into play and the world of meaning (lying behind the world of phenomena) stands revealed, thereby dispelling illusion. Truth, as it is, is seen and known. Forms in the outer world of phenomena (outer from the angle of the soul and therefore encompassing the three worlds of our familiar daily living) are seen to be but symbols of an inward and spiritual Reality. Glamour, A World Problem, Page 190

So, we have before us the outer world which can seem quite meaningless at times to the average person – but all that happens is the result “of what is occurring in the inner worlds.” Our consciousness them must ascend to the inner world of meaning if we are to see meaning behind the events of the day. Dk gave us the Invocation of Light to guide us in this direction. Here is the first stanza:

“Radiance we are and power. We stand forever with our hands stretched out, linking the heavens and the earth, the inner world of meaning and the subtle world of glamour.” Glamour, A World Problem, Page 232

Notice that he associates heaven with the inner world of meaning and earth with “the subtle world of glamour.”

The meaning is enhanced in the Mantra of Unification:

“Let the soul control the outer form,
And life, and all events,
And bring to light the Love
That underlies the happenings of the time.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 142

We basically have two composite worlds then. There are the worlds of form or “the three worlds of our familiar daily living,” and the subtle formless worlds where all creation is initiated which holds the meaning behind all things we see. When the disciple is able to comprehend the inner world of meaning, yet function in the outer he has then linked heaven and earth within himself and sees “the Love that underlies the happenings of the time.”

Once the soul is contacted, we learn “to appreciate the world of meaning and—through that perception—to touch Reality. It is, above all else, the power to love and to go out towards that which is other than the self.” Problems of Humanity, Page 35

As he said there, the appreciation of the world of meaning allows the seeker “to touch reality.” What this means is expanded upon here:

“May I urge upon all to live more continuously in the world of meaning and less in the world of appearances? It is a truer world and less full of illusion. When the understanding is developed, when men have learnt to see below the surface and have cultivated true vision, then we shall have the steady emergence of the quality of the soul in all forms and the relative subsiding into the background of the power of the form nature. It is this world of meaning which it is the privilege of humanity to reveal.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 1, Page 137

From this we gather that those who grasp the inner world of meaning are able “to touch reality” and “see below the surface and have cultivated true vision.”

What does this mean and how does this principle apply to us, and why must this be applied by humanity for us to avoid destruction?

The World of Meaning and Conflict

Concerning the world of meaning DK speaks of “a significance which is not usually apparent except to the trained disciple who has been taught to penetrate into the world of meaning and to see interpretations not apparent to the neophyte.” Rays and Initiations, Page 485

Then Alice A. Bailey wrote concerning “the world of meaning. The disciple is taught the why and the wherefore of circumstances and happenings both individual and universal. He is thus trained to act as an interpreter of events and to function as a light bearer. Unfinished Autobiography, Page 268

In other words, the disciple who has penetrated into the world of meaning sees beyond the black and white information involved and sees the invisible forces at play and uses the intuition to see the truth behind them. This applies to world, national and local events as well as happenings in the life of the individual.

For instance, if you receive a promotion at work there would be more at play than the extra money. If you see the world of meaning you may see numerous short as well as long range effects that will occur.

If you see two individuals having a heated debate through the media and you access the world of meaning you will see how close each of them is to the real truth.

If you read of an earthquake causing massive destruction you will see that it is not just a random occurrence, but there is a reason for it and meaning behind the event.

The reason the recognition of the world of meaning is tried to whether or not we destroy ourselves is that if any two individual nations or states do not see the inner meaning then they will not be able to reach agreement and see eye to eye. If two or more nations only see the world of objective existence and the meaning of their selfish interests, then the likelihood of war is high. Now that we have atomic weapons a third world war could bring an end to civilization.

DK tells is that the recognition of the world of meaning is a prime factor in preventing this.

First let us look at examples in the past where a lack of recognition of the world of meaning created problems.

A conspicuous one was the American civil war. Even today there is a disagreement over the cause. Some think it was not slavery, but economics, but I submit that when the world of meaning is seen that slavery was indeed a key factor and had there been no slaves a divided nation would not have happened.

The war basically occurred because the North and the South saw slavery from a different perspective.

The South saw slavery from a perspective that seems obviously flawed by today’s thinking, but back in that day half the country was out of touch with what the world of meaning could have revealed about it. This was the basic thinking of the South:

Slavery was a win win enterprise. The whites benefitted from the slave labor and the blacks were too primitive to properly care for themselves so their owners caring for them was a good thing. Both blacks and white benefitted.

This thinking seems bizarre by today’s standards, but a hundred years from now much of our thinking will seem distorted also.

Fortunately, Abraham Lincoln caught a glimpse of the world of meaning on this subject for he said:

“I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel.” Letter to Albert Hodges, April 4, 1864

Lincoln caught a glimpse of the world of meaning, but Jefferson Davis (president of the Confederacy) did not, and, hence the disagreement and the resulting conflict.

If sufficient numbers from the North and the South had recognized the world of meaning there would have been no civil war.

Missing the mark on the world of meaning was a prime cause of World War II. The Allied nations were not perfect by any means, but Hitler missed the mark by a large margin in a number of areas making co-existence nearly impossible. A book could be written on this, but I’ll just mention two things.

He thought that democracy was an inferior system and that a command-and-control system was much better.

He saw the Jews as an evil race who were the cause of most of the world’s ills and they needed to be eliminated.

If Hitler had any contact with the world of meaning he would have seen the flaws in his endeavor. Fortunately, the United States and England caught a glimpse of it and promoted the eight points of the Atlantic Charter promoting freedom and peace for all.

It is much easier to see the real meaning behind the conflicts of the past than the present.

Today there are numerous conflicts raging throughout the world and in each case one or both sides are out of touch with the world of meaning.

Unfortunately, if I were to specifically identify a conflict and point out the real meaning behind it, as I see it, many readers would be enraged, as the division in today’s conflicts is close to fifty per cent on each side.

Instead of being specific let is pick something generic such as freedom. Just about everyone thinks this is a good thing. Even Hitler and the slave owners in the South claimed to be fighting for it.

This tells us that many people do not see the principle through the world of meaning. If so, they would see that true freedom brings the highest degree of freedom to the largest number possible.

Those out of touch with the world of meaning see it as freedom for themselves and those who agree with them. Those outside of this inner circle do not count.

In the past many leaders were out of touch with the world of meaning and war was the result. After the dust settled from the various wars of the surviving people rebuilt and moved on.

This time it is different. With numerous weapons of mass destruction available we cannot afford a war between the nuclear nations for such could destroy civilization.

Hence, we have the admonition from the Hierarchy for advanced humanity to recognize the world of meaning and promote the truth of the meaning recognized, allowing the illusion that creates conflict to be diffused so a new age of peace can finally be ushered in.

There are two other essential pints of recognition that we shall discuss next.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. – Albert Einstein

Those Who Implement World Affairs

The second great recognition that humanity must attain to prevent human destruction is:

“A recognition of Those Who implement world affairs and Who engineer those steps which lead mankind onward towards its destined goal.”

To understand DK, I find it is important to pay attention to his exact wording. Notice that he is not referring to all who implement world affairs but those “which lead mankind onward towards its destined goal.”

In other words, a significant portion of humanity must be able to recognize leaders whose words and works take us on the path of spiritual evolution. These leaders are people who have a sense that guides them toward the world of meaning.

Then there are other leaders, most likely the majority, who merely follow group think and their personal desire for power. Disciples should be able to easily recognize them, but their focus should be on the positive leaders for they are the source of positive change.

Notice also that he did not say political leaders but merely leaders “Who implement world affairs.” This would include some political leaders, but also leaders outside of politics who have worldwide influence.

So, this injunction should be easy to implement, right? All we have to do is recognize the good guys and support them.

Unfortunately, it is not that simple, for once an individual who influences world affairs is seen as leaning to the left or right then half the population will see him (or her) as being on the good side and half the bad. But is the discernment necessary really that simple? Is everyone who supports the disciple’s party of choice furthering the evolutionary plan but all on the other side from the dark side?

Unfortunately, that is the way many esoteric students seem to think, but to make decisions on such a basis is defaulting to the lower mind and emotion which supports illusion. To see the world of meaning one must rise to the level of intuition:

“The intuition is to the world of meaning what the mind is to the three worlds of experience. It produces understanding just as the light of soul produces knowledge, through the medium of that experience.” Glamour, A World Problem, Page 194

The disciple must attain, “The power to withdraw completely, as individuals and as a group, from the world of physical reactions, emotional biases, and to work purely on mental levels. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 705

This would refer to the higher mind which is not black and white, but uses pure reason and intuition rather than raw emotion to come to conclusions.

Why is it then that we have many seekers of truth on the right and the left, with both sides thinking the other guys are supporting the dark side of things.

A large part of the reason arises from the differing rays they are on. Each individual leans either toward the odd rays of 1, 3 and 5 or the even of 2, 4 and 6. Ray seven is synthetic and fairly evenly attracts both camps. This polarization of individuals toward these two groups of rays explains why there are two basic political divisions everywhere on the planet. The odd ray group leans toward dependence on the mind with its flaws from the lower calculating mind and its virtues from the higher mind.

The even ray group leans toward feeling with its flaws from lower emotion and its virtues from love wisdom.

That said we realize that each of us has some influence from all the rays, but each individual gravitates to either the odd or even rays just as most of us lean either to the left or right politically.

The problem is that there are advanced souls in both groups and we may even find disciples pointing fingers at initiates in the other group and condemning them.

What then causes this division to happen so even people of good intent are divided.

The division is mainly caused by too much focus on the lower mind by the odd ray people vs. too much attention on the lower emotion by the even rays. One focused on the higher mind can get along with another in love wisdom, but conflict is inevitable when one polarized in the lower mind encounters another focused in the lower emotions. Most of the general population falls in one of these latter two camps, hence the conflict we see around us in the world today.

How they view each other is essential to realize. The odd ray polarized people tend to see the even rays as illogical, overly emotional believing in impractical ideals rather than a common-sense approach.

The even ray polarized people see the odds as cold hearted, lacking love and empathy and fearfully destructive.

The solution is for the enlightened on both sides to rise to the intuition and see the inner world of meaning behind events rather than only see through the black and white vision of the lower mind and feelings and attack each other.

As an increased number of spiritual people from both sides transcend their lower selves and see the inner world of meaning they will then place that meaning before the public in a form they can understand which will have the effect of bringing the two sides closer together and neutralize the worst part of the conflict.

This raising of awareness by the enlightened of the world from both sides of the spectrum is essential so the positive people on both the odd and even rays will receive reasonable support. This is an important step in securing the peace necessary to prevent world destruction.

In theory this would seem to be an easy task. But, as it plays out in the world, it has the illusion of being very difficult.

Recognizing Good Leaders

There are four categories of leaders out there.

First, there are a handful who are enlightened and who seem to have a glimpse of the plan and are sincerely seeking to serve humanity.

Second, are those of good intent who do not seem to have an instinct toward the evolutionary plan, but will support that which is beneficial when it becomes obvious.

Thirdly, those who have sought leadership for the sake of power and to satisfy the ego. They will support the good and the true if it is convenient. If not, they will go on the line of least resistance.

Fourthly, those who are committed to the satisfaction of the ego and seek for power for mostly selfish reasons, and then use that power for self-interests over service.

The Brotherhood of Light seek to use the first two, making subtle contacts with the first. There is a trickle-down effect toward the third.

The Dark Brotherhood will use the third and the fourth making subtle and not so subtle contacts with group four. They have a trickle-down effect on group two.

Recognizing where the various leaders stand in the scheme of things is not just difficult for average humanity, but also for many alternative spiritual students who consider themselves enlightened. It is not uncommon to find a student who condemns a leader who has a different political view than himself as being on the dark side just because of political differences. Often, they will go beyond this and claim they know what the guy thinks and believes beyond that which he has expressed. DK expressed some frustration with many spiritual aspirants missing the mark more than average humanity:

“It has seemed to us that this crisis is more keenly realised by worldly people than it is by world aspirants… They, instead of working actively to bring about the accomplishment of the ends indicated by the Plan… spend their time in speculation, in criticism of the various world leaders and in fearful foreboding—none of which is in the least helpful and, in the last analysis, is definitely harmful.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 65

It appears things have not changed much as it seems that today the average guy sizes up the various leaders better than many esoteric students.

This should not be the case as it is essential for the stability of the world for aspirants and disciples to penetrate the world of meaning so they can make correct assessments. Then if they do this, they will reach similar assessments on the various leaders, for they will be thinking close to the truth.

Part of the problem with students seeing world leaders correctly through the inner world of meaning is the differences in ray makeup. Those polarized on the even and odd rays will tend to see their opposite as misdirected or even evil, even if they are somewhat higher on the scale of spiritual evolution than themselves. Because those on the spiritual path are more sensitive to ray influences – this will cause them to be more aware of the effect of the odd and even rays often causing them to be repulsed by the differences more than the man on the street.

The problem is that it is much more important for the spiritual student to assess our leaders correctly than the average guy, for they are the ones who will enter into meditation and consciously send supporting energies.

If the deserving leader only gets a handful of students sending positive vibes compared to the majority sending hate and disgust, then his or her job will be more difficult. Such a leader who is also a target can then only succeed by using strong ray one energy which can be destructive if not wisely used. DK gives this advice to disciples:

“There are men and women placed in positions of power to carry out the divine plan is one of the first to be faced. This must be done uncritically, avoiding constant recognition of their limitations, with an understanding of their problem, with realisation of the call of their souls to yours and the pouring upon them of a constant stream of ‘loving understanding.’” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 706

Yeah, the guy may be in a different political party, but many of them are doing their best to make the world a better place and will be able to go with the constructive flow if more of us pour “upon them of a constant stream of loving understanding.”

And yes, there are some bad dudes in leadership that we do not want to support in any way. This statement was given out during World War II and DK had nothing good to say about Hitler for he said this in that same reference: “As to attempting to reach and influence the leaders of the forces of materialism, I would ask you to refrain.” On the other hand, there were numerous leaders heading in the right direction during the war who received little support from spiritual students. For example, many refused to give Churchill his deserved support as he rejected orthodox religion and did not fit the mold as a spiritual person. His humor was often politically incorrect and earthy.

But the worst of these are cunning at presenting themselves as righteous and squeaky clean. For instance, before the war Churchill was viewed with disdain by many, whereas Chamberlain, who proved to be a disaster, was given great praise by the media and the people. After negotiating “peace in our time” with Hitler he was hailed in celebration as a great leader.

Indeed, disciples should have a consciousness that is difficult to deceive, but if they do not keep their minds steady in the light and make a conscious effort to discern they can indeed wind up opposing a brother who is more in the light than themselves.

Recognizing True Servants

What are the steps a seeker can take to ensure that the real servants out there receive our needed support?

It is of great importance that disciple recognize and support the true servants of humanity. The task is difficult for a number of reasons. Foremost among them is that information often suffers a great distortion by the time it reaches the ears of the people. This causes even many advanced souls to be caught up in illusion and fail to recognize both the good leaders and the not so good. DK succinctly identified this problem:

“For long these evil forces have used psychology in order to reach the ends they had in view, and have used it with amazing success; they are still using it, and can be depended upon to employ its methods to the uttermost. They use the press and the radio in order to distort human thinking; they present half-truths, impute false motives, rake up past grievances, foretell (with foreboding) imminent difficulties; they foster ancient prejudices and hatreds, and emphasise religious and national differences. In spite of much shouting, demanding and proposed organisation, there is no truly free press anywhere; particularly is it absent in the United States, where parties and publishers dictate newspaper policies. The main reason why there is no really free press is based on two factors: first, the fact that humanity is not yet free from its predetermined reasonings, its basic ignorances of factual history, or of nations and their psychology; humanity is still controlled by racial and national bias and by prejudice. Secondly, the fact that all this is nurtured and kept alive by the forces of evil, working upon the inner side of human affairs and dealing mainly with the psychological angle because it is so exceedingly potent. This they will increasingly do as this planetary war draws to a close; they will seek to offset the work of the Hierarchy, to hamper the activities of the New Group of World Servers and to cloud the issues involved to such a degree that the men of goodwill everywhere will be bewildered and will fail to see the clear outlines of the factual situation or distinguish between what is true and what is false. Forget not, the forces of evil are exceedingly clever.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 451-452

This was written March 1945 but still applies to us today. There is a difference in the media today, as in that day he listed newspapers and radio as the media while today the media is much more diverse through television and the internet. The distortion still applies, but for a true seeker the truth can be found if one is willing to do some investigating.

For instance, he says the media: “distort human thinking; they present half-truths, impute false motives…”

I find examples of this on a regular basis. Some reporter will tell me what some leader is planning or thinking or tells of an event that makes him look bad and my inner sense tells me that this picture he paints just doesn’t sound right. Fortunately, we have tools available that they didn’t have in 1945, so I Google more information and try to get actual quotes in full context so I can see a clear picture of what happened.

After I do a little research, I often see a picture that was much different than that presented by the media source.

The problem is that many just accept the first interpretation they come across and do not question or seek out more complete details for he says that “humanity is not yet free from its predetermined reasonings, its basic ignorances of factual history, or of nations and their psychology; humanity is still controlled by racial and national bias and by prejudice.”

A lot of the problem is “ignorances of factual history.” It was George Santayana who uttered the great truth that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Those who have a distorted, or lack of knowledge of our past, are easy to deceive about the problems of the present.

Jay Leno received a lot of laughs when he interviewed supposedly bright college kids and asked them simple questions of history, and getting crazy wrong answers to questions such as, who did we fight against in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars as well as World War II. Following up on Leno other comedians and commentators have asked students all kinds of simple questions that they were clueless to answer. I thought history was boring and we didn’t learn much when I was in school in the Fifties and Sixties, but now on hindsight we look like history scholars compared current students.

Humanity’s laziness in seeking the truth is used to full advantage by dark forces, for deception “is nurtured and kept alive by the forces of evil, working upon the inner side of human affairs and dealing mainly with the psychological angle because it is so exceedingly potent.”

This quote illustrates that the drift away from the truth and the embracing of distortion has not been an accident but has been manipulated “by the forces of evil.”

The enlightened cannot just preach to the choir and sit back and think that all will be well, but must do all in their power to see that the truth behind world events is seen in a true light. But first they must see the truth and the main step is to be able to discern leaders who are true servants from those who are not.

How is this to be accomplished?

As previous stated by DK the disciple must free himself from “emotional biases, and to work purely on mental levels.”

This is much easier said than done but a major step is taken when the seeker attains a desire to know the truth wherever it leads, even if it is something repulsive to his astral or emotional nature. He must switch to viewing with pure reason rather than pure emotion.

For instance, many get their news only from one side of the spectrum and are clueless to many views and reasoning from the other side. To switch from emotional polarization to the mental the disciple must become aware of the reasoning of both sides. If he does not do this simple measure, he is most likely to see leaders of one side as all evil and the other as all good.

Now many think they are getting views from both sides when they hear quotes of the opposition from their favorite media guy. This does not count for the presentation may be distorted. Instead, the seeker must go to the source and receive a correct view of what is being said.

The first important step then is for the seeker to actually desire the truth wherever it leads and then to access correct views and information from both sides of a disagreement. This will open one’s eyes if the plane of the mind is accessed over the emotional.

The next two steps are mentioned in this quote:

“As the aspirant progresses, he not only balances the pairs of opposites, but the secret of his brother’s heart becomes revealed to him.” TCF, Page 865

The key to balancing the pairs of opposites as far assessing leaders is to understand the forces motivating the two sides of the political divide. On one side you have those polarized on the 1, 3 5 rays gravitating to either the lower or higher mind and on the other you have those polarized on the rays of 2, 4 and 6 gravitating to either the lower emotions or the higher wisdom, sometimes touching on the intuition. It is of great importance that those two sides on the higher levels understand each other and do not see the other guy as the enemy, for they are not. If they both work on the higher levels they are both members of The New Group of World Servers. In the true reality they are on the same team.

DK says they should “stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellow workers in the work of salvaging humanity. It does not matter if their terminologies differ, their interpretations of symbols and scriptures vary, or their words are few or many. They see their group members in all fields—political, scientific, religious, and economic—and give to them the sign of recognition and the hand of a brother.” Treatise on White Magic, Pages 400-401

If they refuse the hand of friendship the chances are they are not a part of The New Group of World Servers. The spirit of goodwill to all who are willing to receive is a sign you have found a brother on the path.

The third step is revealed in the second part of the above quote: “the secret of his brother’s heart becomes revealed to him.”

Seeing the heart of another is not an easy task if biases are held, for “The disciple will “attempt to recognise the members of the New Group whenever and wherever contacted. This will not be at all an easy task, my brothers, if you look only for those who think and work your way, or who recognise the Hierarchy as you recognise it, or if you exclude those who labour in relation to religious and other fields in a manner different to yours.” Rays and Initiations, Page 254

Because of bias and projection many are very judgmental toward those who think differently than themselves and see great evil in their intentions, even if there is none. But it is possible to see correctly, for the disciple with a degree of soul contact will truly sense “the secret of his brother’s heart” and seek to work with him, not against him.

Indeed, it is a joy for a seeker to find another on the path, and as they travel together their oneness will increase along with their power to serve.

Assisting Evolutionary Leaders

One of the reasons it is important to transcend bias and recognize true and helpful leaders is that aspirants and disciples can actually help them.

“How can I help them?” one may ask. “Most leaders I like do not even know I exist.”

Here is what DK says concerning our relationship with “leaders of the Forces of Light upon the outer physical plane.”

“Disciples and aspirants can surround them with a guarding wall of light and love; they can refrain from handicapping them with thoughts of criticism which can swell the tide of criticism which the worldly minded pour out upon them.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 706

We can send them light and love in meditation which will give them strength:

“Dwell not too much upon world horror, but aim—in meditation—at conveying strength and wisdom to the world leaders as they seek (as they do) to bring order out of chaos.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 695

Your positive thoughts not only influence world leaders but also the people of goodwill everywhere:

“But I would have you remember also that the will of the masses of the people unless misled, is towards good and understanding. I am talking here in connection with world affairs. Stand steady, therefore, and permit no thoughts of hatred and fear to find lodging in your mind. Stand firmly for good, looking for it in all peoples and races and thus seek to swell the rising tide of those who aspire to right human relations, knowing that the potency of love rightly expressed is great and is—at this time—the only factor that can offset hate.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pages 668-669

A Course in Miracles agrees that our thought indeed has great power:

“Few appreciate the real power of the mind, and no one remains fully aware of it all the time. However, if you hope to spare yourself from fear there are some things you must realize, and realize fully. The mind is very powerful, and never loses its creative force. It never sleeps. Every instant it is creating. It is hard to recognize that thought and belief combine into a power surge that can literally move mountains. It appears at first glance that to believe such power about yourself is arrogant, but that is not the real reason you do not believe it. You prefer to believe that your thoughts cannot exert real influence because you are actually afraid of them. This may allay awareness of the guilt, but at the cost of perceiving the mind as impotent. If you believe that what you think is ineffectual you may cease to be afraid of it, but you are hardly likely to respect it. There are no idle thoughts. All thinking produces form at some level.” ACIM T-2.VI.9

Indeed, the mind is very powerful and realizing this DK makes this plea to those who read his words:

“I would pause here and solemnly beg you not to make the lines of cleavage wider by placing yourself, and all who follow your form of ideology, upon the side of the Forces of Light and all other people and their ideologies, with which you may not agree, upon the side of the Forces of Darkness.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 129

This is a very common mistake made by seekers which goes something like this: “If you agree with my political, spiritual or other views you are on the side of light, but if you have views different from mine then you are with the Forces of Darkness.”

To neutralize this bias it is of utmost importance that the disciple be able to sense “the secret of his brother’s heart.”

Unfortunately we see many posts on social media accusing those who believe differently from the approved view as being pure evil when to a dispassionate observer they have the best of intentions and are actually trying to make the world a better place.

Yes, there are a handful of people dedicated to the selfish path, but DK says (previously quoted) that “the will of the masses of the people unless misled, is towards good and understanding.”

Indeed, there are many people of all beliefs who are capable of picking up thoughts that will guide them in a positive direction. Unfortunately, the astral well has been so poisoned with hate and negativity because of the present political divide that the average person tunes into more negative than positive vibes.

Leaders of good intent are also affected and disciples need to be extra careful of the thoughts they project toward those who are working a shaping the world within which we live.

Those refusing to give any kind of support or acknowledgement to the “other side” need to ask themselves this question. What is the down side to sending supporting thoughts to a person who has the good of the nation and the world in his heart? It may be true that he is misled on a number of issues, but positive energy sent from the people will cause him to sail with the wind rather than against it and his mind and vision will see more clearly what must be done.

DK says this:

“Goodwill is today a dream, a theory, a negative force. It should be developed into a fact, a functioning ideal, and a positive energy. This is our work and again we are called to cooperate. The task before the New Group of World Servers is great, but it is not an impossible task. It is engrossing, but as it constitutes an imposed life pattern, it can be worked out in every aspect of a man or woman’s normal, daily life. Yet at the same time, we are called to abnormal living, and to the shouldering of a definite responsibility.” Reappearance of the Christ, Page 186

Recognizing the Plan

The third thing that that must happen to save humanity from “the total destruction of mankind” is that there must be:

“A steadily increased recognition of the Plan on the part of the masses.”

This would be the plan as mentioned in the Great Invocation which says:

“From the centre which we call the race of men

Let the Plan of Love and Light work out

And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

“Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.”

A Plan that is restored is something that was once here. What could that be?

What was once here was a direct communication between humanity and the Spiritual Hierarchy.

“In these words I refer to an aspect of the amazing enterprise upon which the Hierarchy is embarked within this cycle: Its appearance, expression and activity upon the physical plane for the first time since it withdrew into the subjective side of life and focussed itself on the mental plane (instead of the physical) during the days of ancient Atlantis and after the war between the Lords of the Shining Countenance and Lords of the Dark Face, as The Secret Doctrine calls it. For millions of years, as a result of the triumph of evil in those days, the Hierarchy has stood in silence behind world events, occupied with the following work—a work which will eventually be carried on exoterically instead of esoterically.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 519

There was a temporary defeat by evil forces that caused the Hierarchy to withdraw, but finally the time has arrived for them to externalize again and this is the plan which is to be restored.

“Thus the original Plan will be restored on Earth; this is symbolically referred to in the Bible as the Garden of Eden; the Angel with the Flaming Sword will no longer guard the Door of Initiation into the Kingdom of God, but will be transformed into the Angel of the Presence. Simultaneously, the door into the world of spiritual reality will open before mankind, and the door where evil dwells will be closed.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 174

“The Hierarchy will eventually, under its Head, the Christ, function openly and visibly on Earth. This will happen when the purpose of the divine Will, and the plan which will implement it, are better understood.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 149

But the way they will function will be more through groups than individual incarnation as noted in this mysterious quote:

“The Hierarchy incarnates on Earth again, and for the first time since its last incarnation in Atlantean days. It is, however, a group incarnation and not the incarnation of individual Members. This is probably a subtle point too difficult for you to grasp.” Rays and Initiations, Page 334

It is true that DK does tell us that there will be individual incarnations of advanced beings, but overlooked by many is that most of the links between heaven and earth, or the hierarchy and humanity, will be through groups being overshadowed by the Hierarchy. He says this:

“Little by little, there will appear all over the earth, groups of illumined souls who can cooperate with the Masters with perfect freedom of intercourse because their responsiveness has been scientifically trained and developed.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 29

When the reality of the Spiritual Hierarchy is realized by individuals and groups the plan calls for them to spread the knowledge of them:

“The fact of the Hierarchy must be announced in no uncertain terms, thereby arousing public interest, public investigation and public recognition.” Destiny of the Nations, Page 36

When this contact and teaching has permeated disciples then “This next development of the plan will produce in man an understanding —intelligent and cooperative—of the divine purpose for which the One in Whom we live and move and have our being has deemed it wise to submit to incarnation.” A Treatise on White Magic, Pages 403-404

To speed the manifestation of the Plan the Hierarchy has released the Great Invocation concerning which DK said: “it is essential that every disciple (aspiring to the service of humanity) should make its distribution as well as its daily use a major duty and obligation.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 179 And “to use the Invocation so that it becomes a world prayer and focusses the invocative demand of humanity.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 641

The idea is that it will become has well known as the Lord’s prayer from the New Testament.

Here it is in the original wording:

From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out.
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

One of the reasons its use is of great importance to us is: “It is of great potency, and when used by men of all faiths can aid in the process of averting war.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 558

If it can avert war then it can cause us to negate “the total destruction of mankind.” Of which we were warned could happen

And this brings us to the final question concerning the core of this treatise. DK said the “three recognitions must be evidenced by humanity and affect human thinking and action” by 2025 if the total destruction of humanity is to e avoided. Then let us ask: Has humanity gained significantly in consciousness of the three recognitions from 1946 to 2025 to make a significant difference.

First, Have we gained a recognition of the world of meaning that there is more to life than appears in the surface that there is a spiritual intelligence available to guide us?

Secondly, Do we look into the hearts of our leaders to find those who sense higher will and meaning, and support them, imperfect though they may be?

Third: Has humanity had an increased recognition that there is a divine plan and has the Great Invocation permeated the consciousness of the people?

At the present time (Jan, 2026) it seems to many that we may have gone backwards as a race rather than forward, but remember that if the world if meaning is seen that truth is revealed beyond that which seems to be happening in the outer world.

Indeed, we are at a point of tension, but the great conflict has shifted more to the astral-emotional world than the physical. There has been nothing comparable to World War II since 1946 and we have not had the great nuclear war feared by so many. The fact that 2025 has come and gone with no nuclear exchange is a good sign, but it doesn’t mean we are out of the woods.

The way I see it is that humanity has made some advancement concerning the three recognitions but we have so far escaped destruction by the skin of our teeth. Despite appearances we have a reasonable chance to move into a new age of peace and prosperity, but the door to evil is not yet shut and the disciples of the world must maintain diligence in focusing and promoting the three recognitions and promoting light and love and power as they understand them.

Concerning “the center which we call the race of men.” DK said, “Here and here alone lies the promise of the future and its hope and opportunity. Here and here alone can all the divine qualities—in time and space—express themselves and find fulfilment: here and here alone can love be truly born, intelligence correctly function, and the Will of God demonstrate its effective goodwill. Through humanity, alone and unaided (except by the divine Spirit in every human being), can the door where evil dwells be sealed.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 159

The future is indeed up to us. We cannot just sit around and wait for a messiah to show up and fix everything. We must do our part or there will be nothing to fix. We are the ones we have been waiting for. Let each of us do our part.

Mysteries of Initiation

Question: So would one know for sure if they were a second degree initiate or not? Or could they be a second degree initiate and not know it? If they could and not know it when would one know for sure what level they are at?

JJ: Until the writings of Alice A. Bailey became available in depth knowledge of the initiations were not available to the masses. Hence there have been many initiates in history who knew nothing about the initiations. All initiates have had a sense of making progress before the eyes of God but few understood the gradations.

Shakespeare, Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddie, Lincoln, Churchill, Edison, Tesla and many other initiates had similar initiation experiences but it is likely that none of them were consciously aware that there were specific initiations. Once in a while an initiate will have a conscious revelation that tells him what is going on, but this is the exception.

DK tells us that the actual recognition by the Hierarchy of an initiation happens after the abilities and qualities of the initiation have already been obtained. It’s a little like getting a college diploma after the ceremony. The diploma does nothing to enhance your education or make you smarter or improve your skills. It is merely recognition of accomplishment.

Even so, the initiations are like diplomas giving recognition of something that is already accomplished.

When you read DK about the initiations it sounds like all initiates would know if they have passed an initiation even if they have not heard of Alice A. Bailey. He talks about ceremonies that accompany them with Masters, rods of power etc. Who could put something like that out of his mind?

DK barely mentions the reasons that initiates rarely recall initiation ceremonies. There are two reasons for this.

[1] The initiation ceremonies are usually held after death, between lives.

[2] Other times they take place during sleep. The disciple may have some dreams around the event but the conscious memory is often lost.

It is only on rare occasions that initiates have a conscious memory of initiation ceremonies. I doubt that even Alice A. Bailey or HPB had full memories of their own, even though they were aware of the initiation process.

Since a seeker can be an initiate yet have no conscious memory of any ceremony of recognition then can he know if he has passed the first, the second, the third etc.

The answer is a pretty solid yes for the first and the third, but the second is more difficult to discern.

The first degree initiate has the birth of the Christ in his heart. He becomes a seeker and does all he can to purify himself to make himself acceptable before God. He seeks to control his sexual impulses and body appetites.

Many seekers can identify with going through this process.

The third degree initiate has a profound supernatural experience where he confronts the Dweller on the Threshold and experiences the Angel of the Presence that ends with seeing through illusion. Such a disciple will recognize this initiation when it is described by DK or others.

The second initiation is a little more difficult to recognize because glamour springing from the ego is powerfully involved and must be overcome.

Many first degree initiates struggling with glamour will automatically assume he or she has achieved the second or beyond. Those struggling with ego and glamour usually overestimate their status and a few have the glamour of false humility and project themselves as below average when in their hearts they see themselves as superior to others.

The second initiation is one of the most difficult to achieve because of the power of the lower ego and the surrounding glamours. Then the achievement is a long tough process with no one great moment or flash of light marking the achievement. Reaching the second initiation is a little like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. When you put in the last piece you finally see the whole picture but this achievement was proceeded by finding many other pieces first.

Here are some qualities found in the second degree initiate.

[1] Strong desire to improve himself and achieve self control

[2] He is at peace with his emotional self even in stressful conditions.

[3] He will rarely take offense at anything anyone says, even if it is highly insulting or outrageous. If someone shoves him he is not likely to shove back unless there is some purpose in it.

[4] He will rarely make statements to illustrate how great or talented he is. He will show his ability by his actions rather than boasting or even subtle hints.

[5] If associates see you as someone who is always trying to prove how good you are or as an obnoxious ego then chances are you have not achieved the second degree. If they see you as a nice person and feel comfortable having you in charge then that is an indication you have achieved, but there are exceptions.

[6] A second degree or higher is usually working on initiating something such as, a group, a philosophy, a business or some idea. He will go beyond just dreaming and scheming and attempt to accomplish and will not quit just because times are tough.

[7] The second degree is opening up his heart energies and those close to him [or her] will enjoy the relationship and sense the warm energies coming from this person.

[8] No one likes to be criticized but the second degree or higher will appreciate constrictive criticism and even be open to learning from harsh destructive attacks.

[9] The second degree can transcend guilt and put it in its proper place where it can do no harm.

[10] He practices the principle of harmlessness.

[11] He holds no grievances.

[12] He has achieved a degree of soul contact and has had spiritual experiences that have convinced him that the spiritual world is real.

[13] He takes responsibility for his lot in life and will rarely blame others for his problems.

[14] He has good mental development, is reasonable and logical.

These are just a few of a list that could be expanded.

The key mark of the second-degree initiate is the overcoming of glamour but the difficulty in only going by this is that one who has not achieved the second degree cannot see glamour correctly. He may think he has no glamour when he does. This difficulty will make the list I have presented quite helpful if contemplated.

Reader Question: If Paul experienced the 3rd initiation on the road to Damascus, then when did he experience his 2nd? How could Paul have experienced the 2nd initiation and still persecute the Christians? The 2nd initiation should have dispelled this error about the Christians.

JJ: We do not have many details of Paul’s life before he joined the church. We do know his mind was highly developed and was very focused. These are two qualities of a second degree initiate. My guess is that he had some spiritual experiences when he was young that made him dedicated to the highest he knew and that led to overcoming glamour.

The second degree can be far from perfect because of illusion. Remember that Hitler was a second degree initiate who took the Left Hand Path instead of the Right. Paul was probably close to this in persecuting the Christians but caught himself before it was too late.

Initiations that are repeated from past lives are completed by the age of 21, but new ones can be achieved at any age past 21. Moses reached his third when he was in his eighties. Initiates continue to achieve way past their first Saturn cycle.

The question came up as to why HPB smoked if she had control over her appetites. If you read her biography you see that she smoked unapologetically and really enjoyed it and offered cigarettes to all. She seemed unaware that smoking was bad for the health so did not attempt to stop this habit.

Reader Comment: You aren’t even capable of choosing a path [right or left] until AFTER completion of the 3rd…

JJ: The choice is made as one approaches the third. When the third is approached the choice between the two paths becomes clear. If the left-hand path is chosen then illusion is magnified. If the right is chosen then revelation comes, illusion is dispelled and the initiation is achieved.

There would only be the ceremony if the initiate passes the third for the first time. There would only be a subtle recognition of accomplishment if he is repeating what he achieved in a past life.

Moses was overshadowed by an advanced entity who apparently achieved the fifth initiation in that life for the scriptures indicate that his body was not subject to death. It appears the lower Moses figure attained the third. In any later incarnation he would have repeated these initiations before the age of 21 and started working on additional ones. Sometimes it takes many lives to move from one initiation to another and other times progress goes fairly quickly.

Molecular Preparation

Question: So, getting back to the 24 [molecule of 12 couples], will this be folks who developed the skill aspect of spiritual maturity to the point where they can place their consciousness at any level they chose at will?

JJ: A successful molecule will be created from people who have learned understand soul contact and then to keep their attention “steady in the light.”

Many there are who have achieved some soul contract, some contact with the formless worlds, some focus on the light, but they are not steady. As soon as they feel insulted or offended – to hell with the light – it is time to lash out and give someone a piece of their mind.

The useful disciple must see himself as an observer as he moves forward in cooperation and not be distracted by the outside astral noise.

Merely learning to place your attention on a certain body or being proficient at meditation is not enough. The disciple must have the self-control to force his attention on the task at hand and keep it on the light of the path and let no person or circumstance change that focus.

All of the group of 24 must be able to keep their minds centered in the light and center themselves on the point of peace so the soul can be accessed and love for all in the group felt undisturbed.

Here are some things that can destroy the focus of one and thus disrupt the whole molecule.

[1] Offense is a huge factor. One disciple is offended over something someone else said or did.

[2] Grievance. This often follows an offense. One harbors negative feelings toward someone else in or out of the group.

[3] Anger. Anger has its place but not toward a group member seeking to serve.

[4] Feeling like a victim also takes the attention away from the light.

[5] Glamour. A problem occurs when the disciple sees himself as more important than he really is or shows a false humility by falsely downplaying his roll.

[6] Illusion He or she has illogical conclusions planted in his belief system that he has not worked out.

[7] Lack of tolerance. He thinks others are not doing things correctly, or not doing their share or not evolved enough etc. He then concentrates on their flaws which takes his attention away from his own light.

[8] Sacrifice. Even though the keynote for the coming age is not sacrifice he must be willing to make essential sacrifices for the work and dominate lower desire.

[9] Wrong use of sexual energy. This is especially disruptive if it involves betrayal and can disrupt the whole molecule.

[10] Not following the highest he knows. The disciple must follow the truth when he sees it.

[11] Feeling love. The disciple must actually be able to feel love at any given or required time toward all members of the group.

[12] The disciple must be able to drop all the cares of the world and seek the soul as an individual or with the group at the drop of a hat no matter what the circumstance may be.

There are more but this gives the general idea.

Reader comment: I get the impression that once a soul achieves access to a higher part of him/herself, perhaps they no longer need to access the lower parts because the higher part they now operate from can access and use the capabilities/senses of the lower any time.

JJ: The disciple does not lose the ability to access or use the lower when he learns to use the higher. He uses the highest that is available and is able to use the lower more efficiently.

Question: Speaking of groups, where will JJ find the 24 people for the very first latter-day molecule?

JJ: They’ll be found a number of different ways – some may even surprise me.

Comment: If it [the molecule] needs members who live from the Intuitional level then only Hercules need apply.

JJ: Keeping the mind centered in the light is more important than which plane your focus is in. If you get some good intuition now and then but are offended at small things then your focus will be taken off the light, off the soul and away from love.

A reader wants to know if the disciples of old will return to be in molecules.

Some will and some will not. Some will be people who are not known to history.

Comment: Thanks for pointing out all my flaws so succinctly to remind me of what I need to work on… ;-]

JJ: I hope I didn’t give the impression that perfection is required for none of us are there yet and when human molecules appear they will be made of flawed human beings just as existed in the time of Jesus. If I had to boil the needed qualities for the molecules down to one thing it would be this.

The applicant must have the self-control necessary to shift his attention back to the light when in the midst of the problems of general living..

Question: Do you believe that the first 24 people are with you over in America now, but

haven’t achieved enough soul contact yet?

JJ: The problem is not whether or not there are 24 such people in America it is finding them and getting them in one place. Maybe we’ll eventually work with video conferencing since many of the best people are so scattered.

Question: Will the molecule be ready within 10-15 years still?

JJ: The timeline depends on what unfolds. The sooner the better. There are many potential candidates who have never heard of me yet.

Question: Ok, JJ, here is a really HUGE question. What happens when two or more Solar Angels disagree on a topic or subject? How can anyone be sure of anything, anymore?????

JJ: First you must realize that probably 98% of the extrasensory information floating around concerning the earth’s or people’s past does not come in purity from a Solar Angel or a Master but comes from thoughtforms and is filtered through the astral body which gets information jumbled up. The past from one channel almost always disagrees with the past from any other channel you pick.

The most accurate past life information comes from a person’s own retrieval of memory through regression and even here about half of regressions have false memories thrown in.

Take all readings of the past as points of interest for contemplation and only accept them if you happen to get personal verification through your soul.

This is why I keep saying that understanding principles is the important thing.

Tim Woodward, a local columnist of many years for the Idaho Statesman, Idaho’s largest newspaper, is retiring and the paper invited readers to write in stories of how he influenced their lives. I thought my story may be unique. Here it is.

Tim Really Did Change My Life

Tim is responsible for changing my life dramatically and he is (I am sure) blissfully unaware of this – until, now. It is time he knew, and past time to say thanks.

Back in January 1987 I was experimenting with making a living with a hobby I had for many years – handwriting analysis. It was kind of tough getting customers so I had the bright idea of contacting Tim Woodward about writing an article about me. Here’s what I thought would be an interesting article:

Tim would gather a number of samples of unsigned handwriting from the Statesman staff and give them to me to analyze. I would have no idea of who each sample belonged to so it would be an interesting test of my accuracy in analysis.

As I thought about doing this I grew kind of nervous, especially as I reflected on some of Tim’s past articles. If Tim thinks someone is fraudulent or trying to put something over on you then he’ll go for the jugular. I weighed the possibility that I may not be accurate enough for him and he may declare me a shyster and I’d have to hide under a rock for years to come.

I decided to take the chance and gave him a call and ran the idea past him. He responded by telling me that they had done something on handwriting recently and it was too soon to do anything now.

That seemed to be the end of that. I was almost relieved that I wasn’t putting my head on a possible chopping block.

Then mysteriously, a couple days later Tim called me back and said he was interested in doing the article after all and for me to come to the Statesman office and pick up some handwriting samples. He gave me a couple days to go over them and then I’d give him the analysis.

After I picked up the samples and took a look, I saw that the Statesman staff was composed of a wide range of personalities and talent – an interesting group to analyze.

A couple days later Tim woke me up with a phone call at about 7:30 in the morning wanting me to give him the analysis over the phone. This was a possible problem because I am a night person who retires in the wee hours of the morning and I rarely arise before 9:00 AM. If awakened before 8 AM I am not even sure where I am.

Anyway, I figured I needed to go for it rather than ask for more time and I analyzed the handwritings one by one.

After I was finished, I was still half asleep and could barely remember what I said. This may have been the worst analysis I have ever given, I thought. I could just see Tim’s headline now: “Crazy Incoherent Man Thinks He Can Analyze Handwriting.”

I was very nervous in waiting for the article to come out, but then on Jan 25, 1987 there it was. Tim liked my analysis, thought it was surprisingly accurate and the article was very positive.

Then at the end of the article he wrote an unexpected sentence that changed my life. He mentioned that I told him I was going to give a seminar at the Holiday Inn that weekend and expected it to be interesting.

Now I’ve done a lot of things in my life that required advertising but I’ve never had an ad as powerful as this good word from Tim. Even though there was no contact information or specific details, the phone started ringing off the hook right after I finished reading the article. For the next couple days all I did was answer calls from people wanting details about the seminar. It wasn’t long before all the available space was full and we had to schedule a second seminar to accommodate everyone. Within a day that filled up also.

So how did all this change my life?

Simple answer. One of the people who read Tim’s article and called me was my future wife. We have been happily married now since 1988.

Tim has been unaware the many times I thought about him as I have enjoyed my relationship with her over the years. If Tim had not changed his mind and given me that call, if he had not written a positive article, if he had not mentioned the seminar, if just one small thing had been different I may have never met her. She’s also been a central character in three books I have written and published. Even these would not exist as is without Tim.

Thanks, Tim, for the ironic twist of fate. You’ll always have a soft spot in both of our hearts.
