The Principle of Brotherhood

The Principle of Brotherhood

What is brotherhood and the principle behind it?

Who do you suppose the Brotherhood of Light calls its members (females included, of course)?

Why is the recognition of the brotherhood of all humanity a key ingredient to bring peace on earth and goodwill to all humankind?

Brotherhood is the recognition that we all came from the same source, which is God. Each of us are the offspring of God and made in His image. Because of this family relation we have to each other we can and should see the same divinity in our brother that we see in ourselves. True brotherhood though is a two-way street. It can only exist in fullness when the two become one by recognizing their true relationship with each other.

The principle is thus the mutual recognition of coming from the same source and giving the same potential for growth.

Brotherhood seen in one direction is helpful, but true peace on earth cannot be had until the principle is returned. One of the missions of disciples over the next couple hundred years will be to teach the principle of brotherhood. This will be done by emphasizing the teachings of brotherhood found in every religion. If the religious ones of the world just live up to the teachings of their various prophets, then real two-way brotherhood can become a reality.

The reason that all (both male and female) are called brothers by DK, who represents the Brotherhood of Light, goes beyond the fact that they are in a sending situation relative to us.

The reason for this is found in the words of Jesus:

46 “While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

47 “Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

48 “But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

49 “And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

50 “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Matt 12:46-50

Here Jesus was trying to emphasize the unity behind all human life. A person is not a brother because he is a member of your physical family, but we are all part of a universal family and in a deeper sense all are family, if we could see it.

The real reason that the two terms brotherhood and sisterhood are not used to differentiate is because differentiation is not desired. Two “hoods” would tell us that the are two competing family relations, possibly competing with each other for superiority. To avoid this division one term is used,

So why was brotherhood selected instead of sisterhood?

The answer is this. Sisterhood refers only to the female gender whereas brotherhood refers, in the esoteric sense, to a relationship that applies to both sexes. True brotherhood is the recognition that we are in the same spiritual family no matter what sex we are.

DK even crosses the species barrier with the word and calls our pets “our little brothers.” I found that to be a very endearing phrase.

Question: How responsible are young children for their actions and do they accumulate karma?

DK taught that the child becomes self-aware at age 7 and Joseph Smith taught that he becomes accountable at age 8. Whatever the case it is around this age that the child recognizes right and wrong and feels responsible for his decisions.

Even though a child becomes accountable around this age he still needs a lot of guidance so he can obtain a sure footing in life. A twelve-year-old is wiser than an eight-year-old and a 16-year-old is more enlightened than a 12-year-old. The entity progresses until around the age of 21 where he gains back the basic intelligence from his previous life.

It is true that others who are negative influences share the blame for bad decisions of others, especially young people, but the one who makes the bad decision still bears the brunt of the responsibility. Each of us has to learn to be able to live in a negative environment and yet still tread the path of light unwaveringly.

Anyone who is past the age of accountability will incur karma if he hurts another person. The buck stops at the decision maker. Even so I believe that in some cases for young people the karma of a negative act is often a shared responsibility between a person who set a bad example and the youth himself. After the age of 21 we are more likely to be fully responsible for our actions.

As to dealing with a problem or even dangerous child goes, one must examine the situation on a case-by-case basis.

There are several things usually applicable.

[1] Teach and show them love and acceptance.

[2] Give them the discipline needed to steer them in the right direction.

[3] Get professional counseling when possible.

[4] There are numerous books dealing with this subject. Keep reading them until you get the problem under control.

“The universe is not hostile, nor yet is it friendly. It is simply indifferent.” — J. H. Holmes

Is ACIM Infallible?

Is ACIM Infallible?

A Course in Miracles talks a lot idols. On this subject it is in agreement with the Bible that it is an image we have created that is a substitute for God or the truth. Of course, we recall the story of the Israelites worshipping the golden calf instead of the one God.

The idols of humanity are without number, but the interesting thing is even the best of teachings and their books can be an idol.

Christian fundamentalists see the Bible as the “infallible word of God” and if you question any literal text they will condemn you.

The same problem occurs with any text considered sacred, from the Quran to the Vedas, to the Book of Mormon, to one’s favorite channeled material and so on.

The stark reality is that A Course in Miracles is no exception. If the student views it as infallible the way he or she literally reads it then it has become an idol to him.

And how do we prevent it becoming an idol?

The key to this is the Holy Spirit, the teaching of which I know from experience to be true.

The question each sincere student needs to ask is this: When I come across something that sounds a little strange or difficult to believe, do I just accept it because it was supposed to come from Jesus, or do I check with the Holy Spirit for verification?

If the student accepts without question, then ACIM, as good as it is, has become an idol.

If instead, he checks with the Holy Spirit then he has not made the Course an idol as the Fundamentalists have the Bible.

Ken Wapnick in his own words gives us evidence that Helen Schucman’s transmissions from her Voice was not perfect.

“There also is the group of small messages Helen took down over a period of time, that we came to refer to as “Special Messages.” In the main, these involved “celestial pep talks,” wherein Jesus offered us encouragement by guaranteeing a successful outcome to all things. Some of these even became quite specific as to when this success would or might come. None of these predictions, however, came to fruition, and on any kind of observable or experiential level, none of the positive more general predictions came to pass either.”  Absence From Fellicity, Chapter 14

“Returning to this important point, there is a prominent idea that what Helen took down are Jesus’ literal words, and are therefore sacred and should never have been altered. This is as patently absurd as the lady who wrote to me after the second (and numbered) edition was published, accusing me of changing Jesus’ course by adding numbers to it. Helen did not think that way. A lot of what she heard at the beginning was just wrong, and she of course knew that. Again, I had many personal experiences with Helen of her writing down messages she said were from Jesus. This, by the way, occurred during the same time period when she was writing down the pamphlets, which are certainly pure in their teaching. Inaccuracies were frequently the result when she was involved with specifics. Here are some additional examples.

“I think it was 1976, a year after we met Judith Skutch, the eventual publisher of the Course through the Foundation for Inner Peace. Helen, Bill, Judy, and I were discussing what we thought was going to happen with the Course and our work with it. As was typical during this period, Helen wrote down a message for us, probably somewhere in the summer, and it said that “This year will end in blazing glory.” The meaning was that there was to be some magnificent breakthrough; perhaps, we thought, Helen and Bill’s relationship would be healed and we would all ride off into the spiritual sunset together—i.e., wonderful things would be happening. Well, weeks and months went by, and no blazing glory. Finally, it was December 31st and we were still waiting. Judy was giving a New Year’s Eve party in her apartment, which overlooked Central Park and provided a beautiful view of the sky. Sometime later in the evening, New York City put on its New Year’s Eve fireworks display, and we turned to each other and said: “There’s the blazing glory!” Obviously, Helen had been wrong.

“Another instance of Helen’s inaccuracy with specifics was when she saw her own tombstone, indicating that she would die when she was 72. Well, she died when she was 71. It was close, but if you are Jesus’ scribe, you should not be off even a little. She also that said Bill would die within a year of her death, which became a big concern for Bill.  But he lived another seven years and died in 1988. Finally, Helen said that her husband Louis would die within five or six years of her death, but he lived for almost another nineteen years! And so Helen was frequently wrong when it came to specifics… ” From The History of the Manuscripts of A Course in Miracles by Kenneth Wapnick

Available at: https://facim.org/foundation-course-miracles/history-of-the-manuscripts/form-and-content/

Members of every spiritual movement want to believe their sacred texts are infallible as this removes them from any responsibility of thinking deeply about it or checking with the Holy Spirit for verification.

So, what do I do when I come across something that doesn’t sound right in ACIM?

I figure the worst thing I could do would be to automatically dismiss it, as the Course is an earned authority with me. It has taught many things that have been proven correct through my own experience and confirmation through the soul. So, the first question I ask is whether I am understanding this particular text correctly, or perhaps the intent was for the reader to think in a certain direction.

The worst thing a student can do is to interpret the Course so it is in harmony with his preconceived notions. To see the Course as not being infallible does not give the student license to corrupt its meaning so it affirms anything he wants to believe.

Often then, rereading the context and comparing the questionable passage with other parts of the Course brings understanding.

Then there may be times that certain passages are not resolved. In this case I consider that I may need more light on the subject, but also the possibility that Helen just didn’t get it right.  If what the Holy Spirit reveals seems to be not in harmony with the Course, or any other writing, then I go with my own inner voice.

In fact, the Course’s teachings of relying on the Holy Spirit as a means of greater understanding than words themselves is one of the most profound and helpful teachings of the course.

The Principle of Time

The Principle of Time

Questions on Time:

What is time and the principle behind it?

What is the difference between time and timelessness?

What’s the relation between time and consciousness?

Time is motion in the worlds if form and the rate at which time passes is determined by the rate of conscious perception. The reason our smallest standard unit of measurement of time is a second is because it takes about a second for the average person to register an event in his consciousness. Now we can perceive an event that takes place in as little as about a 64th of a second, but it still takes about a second to register it in our waking consciousness.

In other words, one cannot see 64 images in one second and register them all in that second. We can generally only register one.

But let us suppose that you could register 64 images in one second. Because your consciousness sped up time would slow down. What would seem like a moment to a regular human would seem like over an hour in your quickened state.

The sped-up state does not represent higher consciousness but usually lower consciousness. For instance, have you notice how little lives seem to react very quickly? When you spot a mouse and it flees it reacts quicker than any human. Then watch the insect world. They react exceedingly fast. The reason is that they are registering events quicker than we are and consequently live in a different time reality.

The heartbeat of a living organism is very closely linked with time. The faster the heart rate the more rapidly time passes, but this has the effect of making an hour or a minute seem longer.

You can experiment with yourself on this. Rest for five minutes and read a book or watch TV. Because you are at rest your heart rate will be slow and time will proceed at a normal pace. Now go run for five minutes and get your heart rate up to double speed. I assure you that the five minutes of double heart rate will seem like ten minutes when resting.

People joke about dog years and cat years, but they are indeed different. The life of a dog seems to last as long to it as the average life of a human. Then if we examine the macrocosm, such as planet earth, its heart would beat once in what would be years to us. Some say the earth’s heart beats once every 25,000 years. This would give one an idea of how a planetary life may register time which is much different than the lives within it.

Time is also dependent on size for when one is reduced in size the amount of distance traveled is less. Think back to the Grand Tour in my book “Eternal Words” and how consciousness had to adapt to new time perception as size was reduced. We can see this somewhat in our own lives. Remember when you were a little tyke and how long a day seemed to be, particularly the night before Christmas. That seems to a kid like three days to an adult. This is not just caused by imagination but reality.

Older people also complain that time seems to go faster. It is interesting that their responses are also slower. But their response rate does not seem as slow to them as it does to their young friends because the two register time differently. They have recently done experiments on this and have shown this to be true.

Time also exists in the worlds of form we enter after death, but the reckoning is different. Even so, time moves forward in the physical, even though physical time is not measured there.

The question arises as to whether there is time in the formless worlds. When seekers enter the formless through mediation it seems as if they have entered a timeless state. This seems to be true, but is not quite true. No matter what state one enters time is always passing in the worlds of form.

To understand in part consider the passage of time when you are in a dreamless sleep. Your consciousness is in the formless, but time is still going by and when you awaken you are not sure how much time has passed but you have a rough sense of it.

Consider this. Form comes from the formless and thus time does also. Time therefore exists in the formless as the motion of divine thought and the movement of energy. A certain movement of energy in the formless would correspond to a certain movement of time here on the earth.

Conclusion:

The principle behind time then is motion, and its rate of passing is determined by the consciousness that perceives it.

“When I go to a dictatorship, I only have to talk to one person and that’s the dictator, because he speaks for all the people. But in a democracy like Israel, there is a wide range of opinions and that counterbalances the disappointment that I have in not meeting with the people shaping Israeli power now in the government.” — Jimmy Carter

Crystallization, Heaven & Dark Brothers

Crystallization, Heaven & Dark Brothers

A reader referred to my previous comments on DK’s teachings that most people crystallize around the age of 56. I have commented on this several times and I believe I have taught the figure was somewhere around 90%.

I expanded on this and said that crystallization is linked to our Saturn cycle of approximately 29.5 years and many crystallize as early as the first Saturn cycle. They learn what they need to know to make a living and pretty much cease life changing learning from that point on.

Now that I am sixty-three (written 2008) and have watched many associates through the years age, I can certainly see that this is a true principle. I learned the truth of it around the end of my first Saturn cycle so that has given me some decades to observe it.

Yes, I am still learning many new things and principles and hope to as long as I am privileged to continue in the flesh.

As far as crystallization goes identifying it can be illusive for the crystallized person can still learn data, but he is very reluctant to alter his thinking, see newprinciples or start in a new direction.

One easy way to identify some older people who are crystallized is that they will refuse to learn about computers or other new-fangled gadgets.

Finding Heaven

Question: Shouldn’t we just find heaven right here on earth and do we not pass through seven planes to get to heaven?

I agree with you that we should indeed find heaven on the earth. After all, some of us live here as much as 25% of the time. Creating a pleasant situation is also important for that other 75% of existence when we are out of the body.

The 25 percent refers to life on the physical plane and the 75 percent refers to life after death, or between lives.

There is no percentage that fits all as some people are out of incarnation for thousands of years and others hop right back in the physical.

The point is that since we spend more time out of incarnation than in it, we do not want to ignore the necessity of making heaven for ourselves on both sides of the veil.

A good rule of thumb is this. If you have found heaven on the earth then after you die heaven will follow.

Unfortunately, many people on the earth have not found heaven, but will freely admit that their life is a living hell. If their suffering is from physical pain then that will generally cease at death, but other types of emotional hells will follow to a future life unless they solve the problems that create the discomfort for them.

As far as going through seven levels to get to heaven goes. This is not something I have taught. There are seven planes but one can find the kingdom of heaven and live in it in any of these planes. All seven were created by God and are divine and have a divine purpose.

All people are consciously living in at least two planes now, which are the emotional and physical. Many live in three planes the physical, emotional and mental. A handful consciously live in four or more. We do not pass through the planes, instead, we become aware of that which already exists around and in us.

Question: What is the benefit of harmony through conflict? Doesn’t conflict lead to more conflict and death?

I’ve had lots of conflict in my life, but it has led to liberation and peace, not death.

Harmony is not achieved by force. This is suppression, which is not harmony, but the furthest thing from it.

The harmony that comes through conflict is a manifestation of love. In any relationship mistakes are made, and there are hurt feelings. When those feelings are suppressed or denied then love is also suppressed and denied. During the suppression there may be the appearance of peace, but suppression is not peace. Finally, when the person is honest and tells of his feelings a certain amount of conflict will result. If both parties are seekers of the soul, then the negative energy will dissipate and harmony and love will be the end result.

Negative energy does not amplify when sent toward one who is soul infused. It will merely pass through such a person and be as if it never was as far as he is concerned.

This principle has many applications. This is just one of them.

Dark Brothers

Some seem have a strange view indeed of light and dark.

They seem to see the Dark and Light brothers as two kindly, but bumbling folks that are playing checkers with each other and the only difference is strategy. The truth is far away from this idea.

Most who look for the two brotherhoods among average humanity will never find them. All but aspiring disciples and higher are moving along the left-hand path — the path of least resistance. It is only when soul contact is achieved that the movement to destruction is reversed. The good part is that almost all do reverse their direction and chose the path least traveled by when greater light comes. These eventually join with the Brotherhood of Light.

A handful resist the direction of the soul and these continue on the path to destruction until all their sheaths are destroyed and they start all over again in the world of time and space.

The main difference between the two is their approach toward freedom. The Brotherhood of Light seek maximum freedom for all whereas the Dark Brothers seek freedom for themselves at the expense of others. They are happy to enslave those who do not support them.

All life is interdependent and we all feed each other in one way or another. The difference between light and dark is this:

The Brotherhood of Light make an even exchange. They serve and give to their disciples and the disciples serve and give back to them.

The Dark Brothers seek to be served as the top priority and are only of service to anyone below them when it serves the selfish purposes of their lower nature. They seek to take more than they give and thus create an imbalance.

A high percentage of humanity just drifts ignorantly along the left-hand path. That does not make them Dark Brothers but it does make them useful to them. It also makes the job of the Brotherhood of Light very difficult because they can only use the few who have resisted the path of least resistance and chosen the path less traveled by. The job of the disciples is to present ideas that go against the grain of the majority in an attempt to lift them up to the light and away from the control of the Beast and the path of darkness. The disciples are like Galileo telling the ignorant masses that the earth is not the center of the universe. The masses under the influence of the deceived authorities reject this and fight against the light.

A traveler can only enter the ranks of one of the brotherhoods when he sees clearly the two paths and makes a conscious choice as to which one, he wants to take.

The final result is the opposite of the beginning of the path. For the first part of the journey all ignorantly follow the left-hand path, but on the last part of the journey all but a few switch over and knowingly follow the path of light. Only the most stubborn and selfish of souls become committed Dark Brothers. But even though their numbers are few their power is great because over 90 percent of humanity are presently flowing in their direction. Another thing that gives them power is they have many advanced selfish souls to work with through which they can manipulate humanity. Many of these eventuality return to the path of light and only the worst of them knowingly continue on the destructive left hand path. Think of Darth Vader who changed at the end even though he seemed past the point of no return. The emperor, on the other hand, was too far gone to make the return.

Question: Aren’t protons monads and will not the Cern collider destroy lives or potential universes?

The lives in the subatomic universes are asleep in that sphere and their past intelligence operates on automatic pilot like a great computer program. The lives of the sub-universes have transferred their active intelligence to this one and are seeking expression here in this time and space.

No, a proton is not a Monad. A Monad is a dimensionless point in the space of the divine plane and evolves to a sun called a human being in the physical.

Question: Could you expand on what you mean by living in two planes?

I mean that the average person is aware of both his physical and emotional feelings and is capable of understanding the difference between the two. We all are aware of physical existence, but we all experience an emotional one too. It is just not visible to the physical eyes, but is felt as much or more than the physical. For instance, almost all understand the difference between the pain of romantic rejection and the pain from dropping an anvil on your toe.

Now most believe they understand the thinking world of the third plane, but for the majority this is merely the work of the physical brain at work in connection with the emotions.

True mind which is represented by the power of pure logic and reason and independent of outer authority is only active in about 10 percent of humanity — and even with many of these the state is embryonic.

“And in that day when you drop an anvil on your toe, take no thought as to what ye shall say, for the words will be given unto you.”

Magic and ACIM

Magic and ACIM

Among the difficult teachings of the Course to accept are the teachings on magic. Students tend to place great emphasis on forgiveness, and rightly so, for learning to apply this is a first major step in awakening. But many, including myself, have applied this are we are still here in the dream so obviously more needs to be realized and applied.

One of the greatest hurdles, and much more difficult than forgiveness in my opinion, is applying the Course teachings on magic.

The question that needs to be addressed is this. Exactly what is the Course referring to when it speaks of magic? In other words, “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.” Lesson 79

We are told that “Magic is the mindless or the miscreative use of mind.” T-2.V.2

We are further told that, “The whole distortion that made magic rests on the belief that there is a creative ability in matter which the mind cannot control. This error can take two forms; it can be believed that the mind can miscreate in the body, or that the body can miscreate in the mind.” T-2.IV.2

The Course tells us that any attempt at creation that runs contrary to God’s will is magic, but it is usually referring to some creation in connection with the body when speaking of it.

The main focus of magic as miscreation is linked to the manifestation of various illnesses and pain linked to the body.

“The body cannot create, and the belief that it can, a fundamental error, produces all physical symptoms. Physical illness represents a belief in magic.” T-2.IV.2 I said before that illness is a form of magic. T-5.V.5

This runs contrary to to what humanity is taught about illness. Standard medicine teaches that the body produces illness through a mysterious weaken immune system, bad genes or many reasons unknown. Disease just seems to magically appear for no apparent reason.

To the contrary the Course says there is a reason behind all illness and it is the belief that the body can create disease, as if by magic, pretty much divorced from the power of the mind.

Then it makes the claim that attempts to heal the body by anything but right-mindedness is also magic:

“All material means that you accept as remedies for bodily ills are restatements of magic principles. This is the first step in believing that the body makes its own illness. It is a second misstep to attempt to heal it through non-creative agents.” T-2.IV.4

We are also told that trusting in magic is the only cause of pain:

“No risk is possible throughout the day except to put your trust in magic, for it is only this that leads to pain.” M-16.11

So what are some of these magical material means that we see as “remedies for bodily ills”?

“Magic imprisons, but the laws of God make free. The light has come because there are no laws but His. We will begin the longer practice periods today with a short review of the different kinds of “laws” we have believed we must obey. These would include, for example, the “laws” of nutrition, of immunization, of medication, and of the body’s protection in innumerable ways.” W-pI.76.7-8

“You really think a small round pellet or some fluid pushed into your veins through a sharpened needle will ward off disease and death.” W-pI.76.3

So, this magic that imprisons seems to include all the remedies that medical science offers us.

Even the wearing of glasses to improve vision is considered magic:

Thus you believe that you can change what you see by putting little bits of glass before your eyes. This is among the many magical beliefs that come from the conviction you are a body, and the body’s eyes can see. W-pI.92.1

Then it gives us this advice for healing:

“So do we lay aside our amulets, our charms and medicines, our chants and bits of magic in whatever form they take. We will be still and listen for the Voice of healing, which will cure all ills as one, restoring saneness to the Son of God. No voice but this can cure.” W-pI.140.10

All this may cause faithful ACIM students to ask if they should discontinue all reliance on modern medicine and seek healing from God through right thinking.

It all depends says the Course.

“Physical medications are forms of “spells,” but if you are afraid to use the mind to heal, you should not attempt to do so. The very fact that you are afraid makes your mind vulnerable to miscreation. You are therefore likely to misunderstand any healing that might occur, and because egocentricity and fear usually occur together, you may be unable to accept the real Source of the healing. Under these conditions, it is safer for you to rely temporarily on physical healing devices, because you cannot misperceive them as your own creations. As long as your sense of vulnerability persists, you should not attempt to perform miracles.” T-2.V.2

The student who depends on orthodox medicine for healing is told here that if he is “afraid to use the mind to heal” in place of what his doctor may advise that he is “vulnerable to miscreation.” In other words, the act of replacing orthodox healing with true miracles is very fearful and this fear can make the disease worse. Because of fear then it may be best to use orthodox medicine.

Indeed, this fear is difficult to neutralize. For instance, if a student has heart problems and the doctor tells him it is essential to take a certain medicine or he could have a heart attack, most would be fearful of relying on the right mind instead the medicine.

I try and rely on these Course recommendations as much as possible, but I still have a ways to go in this step in the awakening process, as I do use reading glasses. I still need work on getting my mind right so I can have perfect physical vision again, but perhaps spiritual vision is more important.

Becoming And/Or Being

Becoming And/Or Being

This is actually two related principles — Being and Becoming.

Question: What is the definition of these two states and the difference between them?

Answer: To put it most simply I would say this. Becoming is the act of moving ahead with a decision to be actively involved in the creative process. To Become is to create.

To enter the state of Being one merely rests from the creative process. Being is basically rest and relaxation (R&R).

Question: What is the basic principle that explains these two states?

Answer: Basically, it is the night and day or the two cycles of the creative process of existence.

Question: Some say we should concentrate on just “Being.” Where is the correct emphasis that we should place on these two states?

Answer: Do we want to rest all the time or work all the time? Neither. We want a balance of the two.

Question: All things manifest in Trinities. Is there a third state? What is it?

Answer: This is an interesting question that takes us into territory not covered by most teachers –.

Many enter into the restful state of Being during meditation and the rest is so blissful that it is assumed to be our final most desirable state. Few realize that Being in this existence is merely a vehicle for rest. The time to take a long rest is when the creative workday is done in time and space. To take more than a short nap in the middle of the creative day is folly. Take the nap when the work is done.

One member presented the idea that there are several states of being and this is true. There are also several states or degrees of Becoming, but neither of these is the third state.

The third state cannot be achieved in this existence.

Let us use the Law of Correspondences and examine our three states in general living. The first is our general waking state (Becoming) and the second is our sleep state (Being). Where then is our third state?

It is death.

We cannot be dead to the body while we are living in the body. Even so we cannot enter the third state while living in this existence anywhere in the seven planes.

What then is the third state?

A reader used the right words: “Not Being.”

In the beginning of our existence in this universe the call went forth to all monads:

“To Be or not to Be. That is the question.”

Those who responded to the call came forth and experienced “Being” and “Becoming.” This is sometimes referred to as their spiritual creation, though they had an eternal state of ‘not being” before this.

Those who did not respond are still in the third state of “not Being.” They exist, but just in an abstract esoteric level and will one day choose “to Be.”

Those who chose “to Be” cannot go back to “not Being” though they can take a detour by choosing  the dark, left-hand path that leads to the destruction of all the sheaths and clothing of existence.

Thus, even though Being is often presented as a state of nothingness those who teach such know not what true nothingness is. True nothingness (as far as this reality is concerned) is the state of not Being that cannot be entered when one is linked to the physical, astral, mental or energy bodies. If you are here living on the earth, you have not experienced “not Being” since you have decided “to Be.”

Question: What state does the meditation process create?

This takes us into Being but sooner or later Becoming dominates again. The advantage of such meditation is they become aware of Being, even as they evolve through Becoming. The disadvantage is some enjoy Being so much they want to focus there all the time. This will delay their progress in the end.

Question: Is the great rest just a esoteric level now? Where does the life principle fit into this?”

JJ: We have the great rest of pralaya, but before that happens, we still enter into cycles of lesser rest.

In the worlds of form Becoming dominates and Being is in the background, so to speak.

When we go out of form into pralaya then Being dominates, but Becoming is still there but in the background.

The life principle is always active, but just manifests differently while duality is at play.

Question: Why would anyone choose the dark path that leads to the destruction of our sheaths?

JJ: It is difficult to believe until you examine the actions of many humans.

For instance, many religions teach that if you commit adultery you will burn in hell for all eternity. Even so, many who believe this will still willingly go ahead and have an affair anyway. When you think of it, the limited pleasure you get from an affair does not compare in any way to an eternity of burning in hell yet many take the plunge. Fortunately, the burning in hell is not a correct belief.

Those who take the dark path are not quite as illogical as those who risk eternal punishment. They do give in to the immediate pleasures that pure selfishness will bring, but they have kind of a pyramid scheme going where it appears the winners or top producers can continue indefinitely. They all meet the same fate of destruction in the end, however and go back to the state of Not Being. Eventually they will come back into Being but a very long time will be lost.

There seems to be some confusion between the left and righthand path. The left-hand path is the path of selfishness that denies the soul and creates a reality devoid of soul, so the soul is eventually as if it does not exist. These people can speak of love, light, the will of God and have order, but their reality is not linked to the soul causing a loss of life force holding their sheaths together and eventually they disintegrate and go back to “Not Being.”

The right-hand disciple seeks the soul and higher realms and receives eternal life from them and thus can continue exploring and learning from the seven planes as long as he desires.

Question: If you were entirely becoming, how could you be in existence without being? And vice versa.

JJ: There is no such thing as being entirely in one or the other just like all of us are not entirely female or male. The word is polarization. This mean that a person is more centered in one aspect than another.

The person who is Becoming still has Being in the background and during periods of rest or meditation may enter into this state. During periods of Being one is still fomenting and Becoming, but at a slower pace through the principle of absorption.

Question: Is it even possible to go backwards in progression?

Of course, one is not going backwards when one is progressing. But when a person consciously chooses the left-hand path, he ignorantly chooses the path of retrogression and loses any connection to an increased intelligence because he loses connection with the world of the soul. The path of pure selfishness cannot take you forward toward increased intelligence. Increased cunning maybe, but not intelligence.

A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses. —Chinese proverb

The Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama

A new reader, made a post that certainly gives a different impression of the Dalai Lama than the standard ones out there. This is unique enough information that it deserves to be in “The Archives.” See my comments afterwards.

He writes:

“Hey everyone, I’m usually the pretty silent one in this group but I received some startling news yesterday, and I don’t know of any better people to share this story with.

“My trip to go hiking yesterday was cut short due to forest fires and park rangers telling me to get lost, So, I wound up taking a random trip to this local Buddhist preserve instead that I had heard about in the area. It’s part of a westernized branch of Buddhism known as ‘Kadampa,’ very wide-spread and especially popular in the United States and UK.

“As I walked onto the grounds I noticed that the place looked almost abandoned, the dozens of monks that supposedly live and practice there we nowhere to be found. I sat down, somewhat puzzled, thinking my friend’s description of the place was mistaken. Then a lone older woman came out and greeted me. She said her prayers were answered because now she had a strapping young guy to help move around some heavy potted plants and furniture for her, ha ha.

“After my universe-appointed chores and a quick tour she thanked me. I then wondered why she was all alone here in this large place. She brought me aside, took a big deep breath, and gave a very teary-eyed explanation. I’ll give my best recollection of what I personally remember from our talk. (Some stuff may be out of chronological order but you’ll get the idea.)

“Back when the branch was started it was more or less a way for certain teachers to teach what they felt should be shared and focused upon. They were not allowed to practice this in Tibet or anywhere in the East so they ‘escaped’ to the UK, eventually the US, and over the years they re-integrated back with mainstream Buddhism. But recently what’s been happening is over in the East those who practice this form of Buddhism are being severely threatened and persecuted by the DALAI LAMA. He officially denied this branch and declared it ‘evil.’ I guess the tension between the two is nothing new, but now all who follow it or know anyone that does is receiving death threats and letters threatening them and/or their family from the Dalai Lama himself. The look of bewilderment on her face said it all at how serious the situation is.

“This has been happening for so long apparently, but all who were being accused were too scared to cry out for help in fear of being punished or worse. It wasn’t until only a few days ago that the letters crying ‘please help us, we need you’ were coming so frequently to Kadampa leaders in the west that they had to announce it publicly among their community. She told me that a couple hundred monks and nuns left on a very important meeting to find a way to save these people, protest, and beg the Dalai Lama to stop. I’m not even Buddhist and I’m even in utter shock, I can only imagine what this is doing to all those who believed and learned from this man who is going against all the world thinks he stands for.

“After hearing all this we solemnly parted ways, sent out a prayer, and I headed home. And what was sitting on my kitchen table when I got back but Time Magazine with Dalai Lama on the cover, pointing to articles praising him for his spiritual journeys and struggles. As I left I felt that weird nudge that part of helping these people is up to me, no matter how little a part it is. If this isn’t a perfect example of how mainstream media isn’t all it’s cracked up to be I don’t know what is.

“I started thinking about how we’ve reached a point in this world where the real news is no longer seen on our television sets or magazines. But from the stories and experiences of people like you and me, in emails and posts just like this. I scoured the Internet a little and didn’t find much.

“So I’m not sure if I’m the first to try and send this news out across the Internet but I’m sure I won’t be the last…

“Scary stuff. Makes you wonder what else is really going on behind all those pretty faces we see in magazines.”

To this a reader asked: “What specifically (the form of Buddhism) is it that they are/were ‘practicing’ that has caused the Dalai Lama to reject them?”

To this he responded:

“When I asked her that specific question she said it’s even more frightening because they do not know what or why, they can only guess at this point. Which is why they are confronting the Dalai Lama about it. I did some studying up on my own and this is what my theory is.

“This New Kadampa group’s current ‘master teacher,’ Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, has spent the majority of his life completely re-translating the original Buddhist texts into a form of literature more suitable for Western culture in a way they can relate and understand things that they never would otherwise. Much like re-translating the Hebrew version of the Bible. With these new understandings the students and teachers have created new meditations. These reasons are more than likely why the Dalai has renounced them.

“The popularity of these writings and amount of people in this spiritual circle is growing at such an outstanding rate, and Geshe is becoming so praised that it could possibly be seen as threatening to the Dalai. He is not just a religious figurehead but also a political leader, which isn’t always a great mix. The simplest conclusion would be the Dalai Lama is getting fearful about his status of his power, and is trying desperately to compensate.

“But these current meetings and protests they are forming now are to find out exactly ‘why.’“

JJ: I’ve always thought that the Dalai Lama was overrated as far as enlightenment goes. His light seems on par with other typical religious leaders such as the Mormon Prophet, Rick Warren or Joel Olsteen.

He’s always portrayed as a sweet gentle older man who is always seeking peace, but this presents a different side to him.

If what our reader says is true then unfortunately the Dalai Lama is only another arm of the beast using unjust authority to keep his base of power.

I do know that assassination attempts have been made on him so it is understandable that he should be a little reactionary, but even so, this type of attack does not seem justified.

If anyone in the group can dig out more information on this situation go ahead and post it.

The Principle of Consciousness

The Principle of Consciousness

This is another principle we speak of often, but rarely attempt to define.

Consider these questions:

What is consciousness?

What is the difference between higher and lower consciousness?

What is the principle behind consciousness itself?

I want you to go a little deeper into the understanding of the core principle.

To be conscious one must be conscious of something. What then are the “somethings” that make consciousness possible?

Is consciousness then even possible in the formless worlds?

Are you conscious when you are asleep and not dreaming?

Contemplate again and ask yourself:

What is the core principle that creates consciousness?

Here is more to think about.

What is the relation of time to consciousness?

Is there consciousness without time? If so, what can one be conscious of?

Let us look at the first question:

[1] What is consciousness?

Consciousness is the registration and recognition by a living entity of something that affects him. That which affects him changes him, even if it is sometimes a very small change. This something can be in form or formless, seen or unseen and moves him along the path of Becoming.

For instance, a person can go on a walk and take in the scenery, the birds, the sunset, etc. All these forms affect him and stimulate consciousness.

On the other hand, one can feel formless love or joyousness and this will also affect him and stimulate consciousness.

[2] What is the difference between higher and lower consciousness?

Lower consciousness is that consciousness which is stimulated by the physical world and the lower emotions. Higher consciousness is that consciousness which is stimulated by the heart, higher mind and formless worlds.

[3] What is the principle behind consciousness?

A reader responds saying that duality and contrast causes consciousness to exist.

Yes, it is impossible for consciousness to exist unless there is an interplay of two or more things — or a duality. The greatest stimulant for our consciousness in mortality is the interplay of spirit and matter that meet within us as soul energies. These soul energies manifest on the physical plane, but also this is the plane where they are most difficult to access in fullness. The path to this consciousness is narrow and difficult, but the reward is great.

The principle is basically the recognition, incorporation or interplay of the self, the decision-maker, with that which is not the self. This interplay produces consciousness, which affects the Thinker, the Self.

Without the interplay of the Self and the Not Self there would be no consciousness as we know it.

Now some say that the highest consciousness comes when we realize that all is one. It is true there is one life with many parts. The parts have to be seen and interplay must result to produce consciousness. This does not negate the oneness of life. Seeing the oneness of life merely enhances understanding of the many and thus expands consciousness.

[4] Contemplate the difference between no consciousness and consciousness. Do we still exist without consciousness? If so, what is existing and what does it do?

We oscillate between consciousness and no consciousness. During the great pralaya we lose normal consciousness and enter into the great sleep of God which is sometime called an awakening, but even during this sleep we have experience. During the deepest sleep we do not dream or have consciousness as we understand it, but enter into a pure state of being and refresh the life principle that sustains us for eternity. We experience pure livingness, which is the higher octave of consciousness. In this state of being we synthesize all our experience into a higher state of intelligence and awareness.

[5] To be conscious one must be conscious of something. What then are the “somethings” that make consciousness possible.

Anything that is not the knower within yourself. Duality stimulates decision, and decision expands consciousness.

[6] Is consciousness then even possible in the formless worlds?

Yes, but it is a different kind of consciousness. Some say there is no duality in the formless worlds, but our dual existence came from the formless. This tells us that the seeds of duality are in the higher worlds.

Edison did not get the idea for the light bulb by finding it on the physical plane but by ascending in his thinking to the atmic plane where every possible idea exists. There he found the light bulb and brought its duality down to us. In the formless the light bulb did not exist as a physical duality, but as an idea that requires Duality to manifest.

There is thus consciousness in the higher worlds caused by the interplay of the thoughts and divine ideas of God.

[7] Are you conscious when you are asleep and not dreaming?

We are conscious in our mental bodies during sleep but lose the memories when we awaken.

[8] What is the relation of time to consciousness? Is there consciousness without time? If so what can one be conscious of?

Time is motion of form or energy and without such motion there is no consciousness. The passing of time creates consciousness as we know it.

Even when the seeker enters the “timeless state” time still exists for he has only left time. We can go in and out of time just as we can go in and out of a building. If you are on the outside of a building the building still exists, you are just not in it and affected by it.

But even when out of time and in the formless state there is still time which is often called the “Eternal Now,” but the passing of time is not registered so it seems timeless. Time still exists as a present extending itself is considered timeless by many. We will not be able to fully understand this state until we enter back into it.
