Youthful Recollections — Part Two

Youthful Recollections — Part Two

Making Adjustments

I kept my agreement with myself and attended all the church meetings for the six-week time period. The first couple weeks I forced myself to go and I just endured the boring lectures, classes, meetings, hymns, etc.

Then I started studying the other boys. I found most of them found church every bit as boring as myself and unlike me, who was going of my own free will, they went because their parents dragged them there. Once at church instead of just sitting quietly, as I had been doing, they seemed to make the best of entertaining themselves.

In Sunday School class they did all they could to aggravate the teacher. They threw spit wads and erasers at each other and made jokes about the teacher when his back was turned.

That said I just have to relate one memorable event. Around that time Sunday School class was taught by my friend Wayne’s grandfather whose name was True. Nobody liked him very much and the kids did everything in their power to aggravate him. When he was aggravated, he would just scream at the class but we soon discovered that his bark was worse than his bite, and the more the kids could get him to scream the more entertained they were.

I was often late to class, and everything else, and sometimes when I was strolling down the hall to Sunday School class I would hear True yelling at the top of his lungs: “This is the house of the Lord and you’re supposed to be quiet!”

“Not much quiet coming from him,” I thought to myself.

Then one Sunday, True was sick and the class was taken over by his daughter, Gladys. Immediately the kids had a nickname for her and started calling her Glad Ass. I’m not sure if she caught the nickname or not.

Anyway, we made the mistake of thinking that Gladys would be a pushover just like her dad and everyone started horsing around. Then when Gladys turned her back and started writing on the blackboard the kid next to me, named Mark, picked up an eraser and threw it at another kid. Gladys must have had eyes in the back of her head because she immediately stopped writing, turned around and walked toward Mark with a very serious look on her face.

Suddenly the class went deathly quiet. Gladys forced her head about three inches away from Mark’s head and said: “If you do that again you will regret it.”

Then she turned around and resumed writing on the blackboard.

Suddenly Mark sported a giant grin and the whole class lightened up. As a leader of the rebels, we knew Mark was not going to let a slightly built female intimidate him.

A few minutes later Mark got hold of another eraser. He held it in his hand and looked over the room still wearing that big grin. When Gladys’ back was turned, he threw it at another kid.

Instantly Gladys quit writing on the blackboard, turned around and walked toward Mark. She moved toward him and stopped again a few inches from his head. The class was quiet as a tomb wondering what she was going to do. Mark didn’t seem concerned as he was still grinning, but not so much as before.

Then after about three seconds of ungodly silence Gladys grabbed Mark by his two ears and with great force banged his head on the wall behind him about six times.

Then she stopped, turned around and resumed writing on the blackboard.

We were all absolutely stunned. I checked with Mark to see if he was okay. He said it hurt his ears more than it did his head.

For the rest of the class all the boys were perfect angels. The same went for the next Sunday, but when her father True returned things went back to normal.

Anyway, a study of the other boys revealed that they made the best of their time in church as to relieving themselves of the boredom. I wasn’t really into aggravating the teachers even though my constant lateness to everything did manage to do that somewhat. I was not only late to church meetings, but also my school classes.

I remember one day I was so late to Sunday School class that I figured I better sneak in. I went outside the building and found a window to the class and motioned to a friend to open it. When the teacher’s back was turned I climbed through the window and sat in the chair.

The teacher turned around and looked at me and said, “Oh, hi, Joe, I didn’t see you there before. Would you please give the prayer?”

I looked around and then said, “Which do I give? The opening or closing?”

All the kids laughed because I didn’t know if the class was beginning or ending and I was put on the spot.

Anyway, I decided that overall I didn’t want to irritate the teachers and authorities any more than necessary and sought for other ways to do my part in relieving the boredom.

One thing I did was to start a contest to see who could bring the most outrageous thing to eat or drink during the Sacrament meeting without getting caught. I took the cake on the eating part when I brought pork chops and ate them without getting caught, but my friend John Cannon (Cannonball in the story I posted) won the prize on the drink. He brought a large Coke, sat in the midst of the congregation, and drank the whole thing with no straw without getting caught.

My friend Brent tried to match his record and came to church with a large Coke in his inside jacket pocket. To his surprise the Bishop called him to go up front and give the opening prayer. We all watched him as he walked up the isle. The weight of the Coke made his jacket sway back and forth and we thought the Coke was going to fall out and roll down the isle. We thought that would have been the funniest thing possible, but Brent managed to give the prayer and return to his seat without incident.

Anyway, after the six weeks I assessed the situation and decided that with a little improvisation that I could handle attending church and I decided to keep going. I just hoped that the things I would have to do to entertain myself wouldn’t keep me out of heaven.

I discovered that blending in with the other guys who were as bored of church as I was took the edge off dealing with the problem. I made a number of friends who went to church, usually dragged there by their parents, and enjoyed mingling with them after the service was over.

As we were talking before going home, we often had our own theological discussions much more interesting than church services. Some of the questions for speculation were:

[1] Do we still eat after we die?

This was probably the number one mystery to us as all of us enjoyed good food and didn’t want to go without it in the next world.

[2] Then we wondered if we would still maintain our sexual identity and the part it would play in the upper and lower kingdoms.

[3] A lot of people thought Jesus was going to come again before 1970. The elderly Mrs. Jones was always teaching that He would come in 1966. We hoped this was wrong as we all had a lot of fun stuff we wanted to do that it seemed the coming of Jesus would spoil.

[4] We talked about the mystery of how some friends as they got older turned into religious babblers, especially after they went on a mission. Whenever someone came back from a mission the question we wanted answered was whether or not “they” got to him.

I remember my friend Brent visiting me after a rebel friend came back from a mission. He entered the door with a somber look on his face.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

He looked at me and said, “They got him!”

“They got who?”

“Nels,” he said. “I never thought Nels would go religious on us but they got him.”

“That’s too bad,” I said. “Maybe he’ll shake out of it after a while.”

“I don’t know,” said Brent. “He’s even got that missionary twang when he speaks.

Nels did partially recover but he and others scared us as to what we could become of us if we were not careful.

[5] Older people in general concerned us. It was a mystery to us that they liked the big band music and couldn’t relate to rock and roll. It was a mystery as to why devout church goers were about 30 years behind on fashion and always drove so slowly. We all hoped that was not going to be our fate as we grew up.

During these discussions I must have told someone I believed in reincarnation as one day the Bishop again called me into his office and said, “I hear you believe in reincarnation.”

“Yes” I said. “It makes sense to me.”

“That’s a false doctrine,” he said. “In fact, it is the doctrine of the devil.”

“Is that so?” I asked incredulously. “Is there anything in the scriptures about it?”

“Yes there is,” he said and fetched a Bible and turned to Hebrews 9:27 and read: “It is given to man once to die and after this the judgement.” He put the Bible down and said, “See. This tells us we only die once. That means there is only one life.”

“It does seem to say that,” I said.

The Bishop looked at me again and added, “Furthermore, the Prophet has said there is only one life and we know he is correct because he speaks for God. Now will you accept there is only one life and stop telling people you believe in reincarnation?”

The prophet speaking for God didn’t impress me that much but I did believe the Bible was true and the scripture did seem to indicate one life. Based on that I told the Bishop I would accept the idea of one physical life, though at the time one life did not seem a fair system.

While still in my thirteenth year I developed an interest in making homemade rockets. I was a little like the guy in the movie October Sky except my first rockets were completely homemade including the engines.

On the day after Christmas Dec 26, 1958 my friend Larry Larson and I were completing a rocket engine made of a CO2 cartridge fueled match heads from book matches. I was just finishing tamping the last match heads of the 25th book when it exploded in my left hand in the kitchen.

After the smoke cleared I looked at my hand and saw that it was a mangled mess. I thought I was going to lose my whole hand. Then I wondered about my right and was afraid to look at it. I could live with the loss of one hand, but what if both were damaged? Finally, I drummed up the courage and pulled my right hand up before my eyes. I was greatly relieved to see that it was OK. My mom wrapped my hand in a towel and got a neighbor to drive Larry and I to the hospital. Larry had a couple pieces of metal strike his hand but he was not hurt badly.

After we got to the hospital, they did surgery on me for eight hours. A lot of the work consisted of digging out match heads that were blown up into my wrist and arm. They finally sewed me up with over a hundred stitches.

As I was recovering, I received a lot of visitors. There was one thing everyone said and that was how lucky I was. I didn’t feel very lucky, but everyone said I was lucky I wasn’t dead.

Another thing that just about all visiting adults, especially church authorities, said was:

“I bet this taught you a lesson to never make rockets again.”

I enjoyed tweaking them by replying:

“Well, I won’t be making them until I get out of the hospital. I will be more careful next time though.”

This statement always sent a jolt through their consciousness.

Actually, this was a truthful statement. I did plan on making more rockets after I got out of the hospital. In fact someone brought me a book to read on rockets and my interest was much greater than ever.

Reading this book changed my life in two different ways. First it increased my desire to learn scientific principles and secondly it was the first book I had ever read in my life. I read what I had to in school, but had never read a book through on my own. It took the boredom of a hospital room to force me to start reading so there was a silver lining in the accident.

As it turned out I lost three fingers and badly damaged the rest of the hand. Altogether I had six surgeries over a three-year time period to make a useable hand.

After I got out of the hospital, I built more rockets than ever, but safer ones. Instead of making my own engines I ordered them pre-made from the Estes Company in Colorado. After church I often invited a crowd over to my place to watch the launching of a new rocket.

This kind of concerned church authorities as some thought was leading other kids in a dangerous direction. I had difficulty in convincing some adults that the new rocket engines that were pre-made were safe.

As I now look back, I am surprised I didn’t get thrown out of the Mormon church earlier than I did.

Life is trying things to see if they work. -Ray Bradbury

Youthful Recollections – Part One

Youthful Recollections – Part One

Note: These are recollections of my spiritual journey from my childhood to about age 16. Hope you enjoy the read.

I must have ended my last life desiring a Sabbatical from religion as in my early life I did everything I could to stay away from church as I found it unbearably boring. I felt fortunate that my parents were not religious at the time and did not drag me to church with them.

My Dad was not religious at all and there was no chance of him attending but perhaps it was partly my fault my mom didn’t attend for there was one time she took me to an LDS sacrament meeting when I was about four. During this meeting they serve small amounts of bread and water to the congregation in remembrance of the body and blood of Christ. Priests break up the bread into very small pieces and then Deacons pass them along on a tray with maybe 40 small pieces on each tray.

I remember that when I saw they were passing out the bread I thought to myself that was great because I was starving at the time. When the tray was passed to my mother, she took a piece and was about to pass it by me to the next guy on the right. Well, I wasn’t going to put up with being passed over and demanded my share.  That alone caused a lot of heads to turn in our direction, which I am sure on hindsight was a major embarrassment to my dear mother.

My mother then handed me the tray  and I immediately saw that one piece would do nothing to satisfy my appetite so I grabbed everything left on the tray and started shoveling  the bounty in my mouth.

This eclipsed my mom’s previous embarrassment as more disapproving heads turned our direction.

As it turned out, that was the one and only time my mother took me to church as a child.

Then when I was about twelve, we moved from Boise to a farming area and lived not far from my sweet but overly religious grandmother. She took it upon herself to get me active in the church. Every Sunday morning, she would just show up at the house to pick me up. Unfortunately, she was such a nice person that I couldn’t say no to her. I don’t think anyone could say no to her.

She would wait for me to get dressed and take me to church.

I was so bored all I did was suffer in silence. The authorities interpreted this as reverence and always complimented me on what a good kid I was and stated that they wished the other rowdy boys were more like me.

After a few weeks of this I smartened up and kept an eye out for my grandmother driving up. As soon as I saw her car approaching, I climbed out the back window and ran into the prune orchard and hid until she was gone.

Then a short time later we moved into a house that was just a few yards away from a Mormon church. My grandmother didn’t pick me up as I didn’t need a ride, but I did feel a little guilty about not going and went once in a while. Once when I was there, the bishop grabbed me and took me in his office.

He sat me down and suggested that since I was now so close to the church that I should attend regularly.

I told him that I did not plan on it as I found church extremely boring.

When I said this he just about choked and incredulously gasped back, “Boring? How can you say that? What is boring?”

“The speeches for one thing,” I said. “They are so boring they put me to sleep.”

“How can you say that?” asked the bishop. “We have wonderful speakers here who give uplifting talks. They are very inspiring to listen to.”

“Not for me,” I said.

“Is there anything else that bores you?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said. “The Hymns are boring beyond belief. They are almost painful, to listen to.”

The bishop really gasped at this statement. It was as if he had never heard a comment like this before in his life. “I don’t understand you saying this. Our hymns are wonderful. I love to listen to them.”

“Well, I enjoy listening to some good rock and roll,” I said, “and by comparison the hymns just don’t cut it.”

The poor Bishop seemed devastated with my attitude and I think he saw me as a lost cause.

After my talk with the bishop, I pretty much was determined to stay away from church as much as possible. There was one thing that nagged at me, however, and that was the idea that if you went to church and were good then you would reap a heavenly abode. If not then you would go to the lower regions where who knows what awaits you. I decided that maybe if I went to church once in a while, I would be able to keep my foot in the door just in case.

One time when I attended the bishop grabbed me again and took me in his office.

He said: “I hear you drink and smoke. Is that right?” He seemed a little incredulous since I was only 12 at the time.

I looked back curiously wondering where he had heard this. My parents drank and smoked so I thought that was all right to do. My friends and I would take advantage of cigarettes and beer whenever the opportunity permitted.

“Well, yes, I do sometimes,” I said.

“Well God doesn’t want you to do that,” he said.

“I wasn’t aware of that,” I replied.

Then he explained to me about the Word of Wisdom revelation through Joseph Smith and the harmfulness of the products and implored me to give up those vices.

I thought about it for a few seconds and decided it would be a good idea to give them up and told him I would do so.

(I do not smoke to this day and did not drink again until the church threw me out at age 33.)

He must have been pleased with himself as I’m sure he saw progress was being made.

Then a few weeks later he called me again into his office. He looked at me and said:

“You know that when you are twelve you can be ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood and become a Deacon. You are almost thirteen and you have not been ordained yet. Don’t you think it is about time you took the step?”

I answered back, “If I am ordained and decide I do not like being a deacon can I quit?”

“Oh, no,” the bishop replied, shaking his head. “The priesthood is eternal and you have it forever when you get it.”

“Then I do not want it,” I replied. “I’m not prepared to be a priesthood holder forever at this time.”

The poor Bishop. During the last meeting he saw progress and this one he saw none.

I went to church maybe once every six weeks until I was into my thirteenth year. One Sunday morning I was on my way to my token church visit and I started thinking to myself something like this.

I have to figure out what I am going to do with this going-to-church business. This halfhearted attendance isn’t accomplishing anything. I either need to be like my dad and not go to church and live life entirely by my own will and pleasure or take this church going seriously.

So, what are the plusses and minuses here?

If I don’t go to church I could go to hell, but I could have a good time here and have lots of fun in my life.

If I do go to church, I will be much more restricted by the religious teachings and bored to death in all the meetings I will have to attend. As I thought about it the boredom with the meetings would be the most difficult to handle.

Then I decided to put the whole thing in a wider perspective. If I go to church for a lifetime and behave myself, I will then be entitled to an eternity of heavenly bliss and joy.

If I do not go to church and just pursue a life a pleasure then I risk and eternity of misery.

Logically it comes down to this. Compared to eternity a lifetime is less than an hour or even a minute. Now suppose someone came to me and told me that if I endured boredom for one hour that I could have anything I wanted for the rest of my life. Would I do it? Of course. It would be a no brainer.

Should I then attend church for a short lifetime to have an eternity of heavenly joy? Life is less than a minute by comparison to eternity. Logically, this also seemed like a no brainer. There’s only one problem I told myself. I was just not sure if I was psychologically constituted to handle the boredom of attending all the meetings and of all the churches on the planet, I think the Mormons have more meetings than them all.

I then made a deal with myself. I decided that I would commit myself to full church attendance for six weeks. During this time I would attend every meeting there is to be had no matter how bored I was.

Then after six weeks I would assess the situation as to whether I could handle attending meetings for the rest of my life. If I could handle it then I would become a regular church-goer and assimilate the whole program. If I felt I could not handle it then I would take the same course as my dad did and live a happy-go-lucky life without the burden of church.

I was facing a life altering decision.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. -Oscar Wilde

Truth about Hierarchy

Truth about Hierarchy

Question: Isn’t it more important to work in the NOW rather than focus on cosmological hierarchies?

Nothing in any of my teachings lead students to not work in “the Now” to make a difference. The fact that hierarchies exist does not undermine this effort in any way, but enhances it.

If one is a student of DK then he should accept the fact of the existence of ubiquitous hierarchies for the hierarchy is one of the main themes of his writings and if the principle behind hierarchy is not accepted one should move to other teachers. There are many fuzzy new age gurus who do not like the idea of hierarchy — except for them being in charge of course.

Here are some quotes from DK on Hierarchy:

“The chain of Hierarchy is great and immutable and the sequences unalterable.” (Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pg 758 by Alice. A. Bailey)

“You need to learn the art of reverence, my chela. The chain of Hierarchy is a fit subject for reflection.” (Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Pg 738)

“The ‘chain of Hierarchy’ is a good subject for your constant reflection, and I want you to pay close attention to my recommendation that this concept form the background of your daily thinking.” (Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Pg 739)

“In this way, if you will note carefully, there is established a direct linked chain from humanity, via the Hierarchy, to Shamballa. The Hierarchy is working at the establishing of this chain, aided by Their disciples. The demand for the cooperation of all aspirants is now going forth, because the times are urgent. If this relationship can be established (and it will be a sad day for humanity if it cannot), then the third method of avataric expression becomes possible.” (Externalization of the Hierarchy, Pg 308)

“The Hierarchy is a great energy centre and, through the Christ, its energy reaches humanity; this is the significance of His words ‘I am come that they might have life.’ Life and energy are synonymous terms.” (Reappearance of the Christ, Pg 90)

“There are other types of consciousness of deep and real importance in the great chain of Hierarchy stretching from below to far above the human kingdom. This is a point apt to be forgotten.” (Discipleship in the New Age, Vol , Pg 609)

“The chain of Hierarchy reaches from heaven to earth and in that chain I am a part. Above me stand the Ones I seek to serve; below me stand brothers demanding help.” (Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Pg 717)

This last quote perhaps says it best. A recognition and understanding of the Hierarchy does not cause one to drift off into some useless dreamland, but it fixes him on the path of service and true usefulness. He who severs himself from hierarchy severs himself from life that links us from earth to heaven and is as a severed branch that lives for a short time then withers and disintegrates.

The chain of Hierarchy is a chain of life linking the highest cooperating life in the universe to the lowest.

It is also important to realize that there are two types of hierarchies. On the negative side are those hierarchies which give the idea a bad name in that the leaders tend to want to be  served rather than serve. They also dictate with strong authority reducing free will of the subjects.

On the other hand a hierarchy of light will seek to serve rather than be served and will set an example and guide rather than command. They bring freedom rather than chains.

Question: “What difference does it make if I BELIEVE in your cosmology?”

First, let me say this. Everything we think, everything we believe and everything we do makes a difference. Any expenditure of energy or thought makes a difference that ripples forward in the world of causes.

If you believe any teaching of mine just because I say it, then the effect will mainly be to enhance illusion within yourself, even if what I teach is correct.

If you believe what I teach, and that teaching is based on illusion, then illusion is building upon illusion in yourself and will spread to others.

If you believe what I teach because you see a truth through the eyes of your understanding then the effects will be many, for truth is a sharp two-edged sword that cuts asunder the veil of spirit and matter and stands forever on eternal principles.

The true disciple seeks to see through the eyes of any teacher and understand principles as he and the highest parts of consciousness available can comprehend.

The key is to always “follow the highest you know.” If the highest you know harmonizes with my teachings, fine. If not, that is fine also. If you and I both follow the highest we know then eventually we will both meet at the point of truth and be united through the Oneness Principle. Eventually all will see the same cosmology, the way things really are, have been and will be. Until that time, one must follow the highest that can be perceived, and when error is discovered corrections must be made or the seeker will fall deeper into Illusion.

When a reader asked for advice on his next step I said this:

It’s not my position to assign you any task. I would simply advise you to ask forgiveness for any grievances created and move ahead on the path in a positive way following the highest you know and giving any assistance possible on the way.

When you follow the highest you know the knowledge of how you can best serve will come to you. It may not come immediately, but it will come — line upon line and precept upon precept.

Question: What do we look for in a false or misled teacher?

There are a number of things that can raise the red flag when we meet someone who claims to want to help us spiritually, or some other way.

[1] He has a very friendly and exuberant personality so the individual draws more attention than his message.

[2] In other words, he may come across like a Tony Robbins, but without the useful message that Robbins has.

[3] He keeps telling you how he is going to help you rather than just helping you.

[4] As time passes, he asks for more favors, takes more advantage and uses more authority over supporters.

“Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit.” — Peter Ustinov (1921 – 2004)

The Two Thought Systems

The Two Thought Systems

The first three major steps to awakening (covered in chapter six and discussed in previous posts) basically involve a switch of focus from the thought system of the ego to that of God, and as taught by A Course in Miracles

In the first step we become aware that there are indeed two thought systems and begin to understand them. During the second step we reject the thought system of the ego and embrace the one that is true. Then in the third step we accept the help of the Holy Spirit and become vigilant in following Him and the thought system He represents.

Since each of these steps involve the two thought systems it would seem to be of significant importance to understand them, for we are told that “There are only two thought systems, and you demonstrate that you believe one or the other is true all the time.” M-in.2

This makes clear that we do not need to examine many thought systems, but only two: one from God and the other from the ego.

The dominate thought system in this world is the one used by the ego. Even though it is classified as one thought system in the above quote we are told that there are “many other aspects of the ego’s thought system.” T-17.IV.6 “The ego is legion, but the Holy Spirit is One…” T-6.I.10

The ego then represents one thought system but within it are many aspects or differing beliefs. But even though it has many aspects it is classified as one thought system because the whole thing is based upon the one idea that “Error is real and truth is error.” T-11.V.14

Communication is distorted under the ego’s system which prevents us from finding the real truth:

“The communication system of the ego is based on its own thought system, as is everything else it dictates. Its communication is controlled by its need to protect itself, and it will disrupt communication when it experiences threat.” T-4.VII.2

Indeed, it is a hallmark of the ego’s thought system to “disrupt communication” when one comes close to the truth. For “the closer you come to the foundation of the ego’s thought system, the darker and more obscure becomes the way.” T-11.in.3

The other thought system represents true reality and the miracle part of A Course in Miracles “is a real foundation stone of the thought system I (Jesus) teach and want you to teach.” T-6.V.A.4

We are told that the lessons in the Course represent “the cohesiveness of the thought system to which they are leading you.” W-pI.rI.in.6 For “you are studying a unified thought system in which nothing is lacking that is needed, and nothing is included that is contradictory or irrelevant.” W-pI.42.7 Just one of its lessons represent “a milestone in learning the thought system which this course sets forth.” W-pI.94.4

It is pretty clear then that the Course represents a thought system. The obvious question then is which thought system of the two does the Course represent?

Obviously, it is not the ego’s where “error is real and truth is error.”

Since there are only two thought systems, then, from whence comes the other one? The Course gives a clear answer:

“The cornerstone of God’s creation is you, for His thought system is light. Remember the Rays that are there unseen. The more you approach the center of His thought system, the clearer the light becomes.” T-11.in.3

Indeed, God is the source of the other thought system and as we “approach the center of His thought system, the clearer the light becomes.”

The terrific thing for us is that God shares His thought system with us when we heal the separation:

“For in this (healing) lies the beginning of the return to knowledge; the foundation on which God will help build again the thought system you share with Him.” T-11.I.1

At this point one would assume that A Course in Miracles is a huge step that was taken to share God’s thought system with us.

At this point a seeker may ask something like this: It seems like the Course is contradicting itself for on one hand it tells us that there is only one thought system that leads us back to our Source, but on the other, we are told that there are many differing teachings that do this. How does one harmonize the following quote with the idea of one thought system?

“This is a manual for a special curriculum, intended for teachers of a special form of the universal course. There are many thousands of other forms, all with the same outcome. They merely save time.” M-1.4

I find it is always important to carefully examine the wording of Course teachings, especially if there seems to be a contradiction.

Notice that it speaks of “the universal course” as singular. It does not say there are many universal courses. There is only one path back to God and the universal course is it.

BUT… there are many thousands of forms of that course.

What then are these many forms? Of course, they would be the many different religions composed of many different teachings

Does this mean that one form, such as the Jehovah Witnesses, is just as true as A Course in Miracles?

No. Of course not. Each form has some truth and some error, unlike the Universal Course itself, as well as God’s thought system, which are completely true. We assume that ACIM comes very close to truthfully representing the Universal Course.

How then can a form containing numerous untruths take us to the same outcome as ACIM?

The answer is that almost every spiritual tradition teaches some of the basic elements found in ACIM, such as forgiveness, loving your neighbor, the idea that God is our creator and is love, that we live on after the body dies as well as other teachings. They may not present the teachings as pure as ACIM, but they do present some spiritual goals from the Universal Course and God’s thought system. They all advance sincere seekers through the universal Course, some saving more time than others.

Consider this analogy. Visualize one singular path that leads us back to God, but along this path are many forks that take you off the path, but may seem to be the right path at the time. As you progress you take several of these other paths and reach a dead end, and then return to the true path. You make several detours but keep coming back to the path and following it until you reach the goal.

Taking these detours was actually part of our journey home as you learned to discern the true path from the false. You also learned that the many paths were an illusion whereas the true path, or thought system, was not.

Since “the ego’s basic doctrine, “Seek but do not find.” W-pI.71.4 it does everything it can to bring confusion to our minds by telling us that we cannot find real truth, and be unified in the truth, because one form of the teaching is just as true as ACIM or another other spiritual teaching. It tells us that real truth is a mystery that we cannot comprehend because of the limitation of words and the imperfection of this world and the people in it.

To counter this was one of the reasons the Holy Spirit was given to us and the third step of becoming one with It is so important for “He sorts out the true from the false in your mind, and teaches you to judge every thought you allow to enter it in the light of what God put there.” T-6.V.C.1

“The Holy Spirit’s goal gives one interpretation, meaningful to you and to your brother.” T-30.VII.6

The ego’s thought system teaches we cannot become one and there always has to be an “us against them;” whereas the system from God, as embraced by the Holy Spirit, leads to oneness and that oneness is the completion of the third step as taught in chapter six.

“The ego is legion, but the Holy Spirit is One… For reality is one with the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” T-6.I.10

Understanding the Overshadowing

Understanding the Overshadowing

Comment: your teachings on the overshadowing are  hard to believe.

When I first read DK’s teachings of the overshadowing principle, I had difficulty in accepting them but then as I contemplated the teaching I saw the principle behind it and that it fit in with the Law of Correspondences. Finally, I had some experiences that verified it beyond doubt.

DK explains that the Master can save decades of time by using the overshadowing principle. He can interact with the world without having to be born and growing into an adult. Makes sense to me.

Question: Does the disciple lose his freedom when overshadowed?

There is no loss of freedom for the disciple when he is overshadowed. He is still the one in charge of the body and the one who makes final decisions. He is willing to cooperate with the Master because of an intimate knowing and harmony.

Question: Is overshadowing and being one with your inner Christ the same thing?

An overshadowing has nothing to do with being one with your Christ nature. This will have already happened before the overshadowing. A Master and your Christ nature are two different things.

Why did Jesus need to be overshadowed? He explains:

“If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me Philip? HE THAT HATH SEEN ME HATH SEEN THE FATHER; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: But THE FATHER THAT DWELLETH IN ME, HE DOTH THE WORKS.” (John 14:7-10)

“I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me IS WITH ME: THE FATHER HATH NOT LEFT ME ALONE…. I speak that which I have seen with my Father….” (John 8:25, 28-29 & 38)

He needed to be overshadowed by one higher than himself because he did not have the knowledge and the ability to complete the mission on his own.

Question: Does this mean that the Christ cannot manifest in us, if we are not overshadowed?

You are confusing the Christ consciousness with the Christ. It is as DK explains that Christ is an office that is held by one entity at a time. The person holding it now will continue for about 1000 years. Then it will be held by the Master KH.

In the meantime, all of us are expected to manifest the inner Christ in our own hearts and consciousness, but that does not elevate any of us to an office.

Question: Do you have to be overshadowed to be enlightened?

There are many degrees of enlightenment. The seeker can receive much enlightenment through his own soul. The purpose of the overshadowing is not enlightenment, but enhanced ability to serve. All will be overshadowed to some degree when they are ready and are usable in the hands of a master.

Question: Does the overshadowed individual lose the sense of self?

There is no sacrifice of individuality with an overshadowing. Such an event only happens when the will of the two entities is one to begin with. For instance, if two people want to build a house and work together on it there is no sacrifice of will, for they both desire the same end. There would only be a sacrifice when the laborer is forced to build a house he does not want to build or work contrary to his will.

An overshadowing is a much different step than separating the physical from the divine in us. The latter happens through personal effort. An overshadowing happens through invitation. You can’t just make an effort and have one happen. It will only happen if you are useful for a divine purpose.

There are many degrees of spiritual contact with higher beings and overshadowing and divine possession are the most intense among humanity. To say that higher contact is not needed because we are divine is folly for without stimulation from teachers and higher lives we will stagnate. This is illustrated by the fact that when a child is denied human contact that his learning and growth just stops. We need each other to move forward. “No man is an island….”

Comment: I think you are taking DK writings and the Bible on overshadowing too literally.

If you are a student of DK then you have to know that he taught a literal overshadowing and not a figurative one.

I do not teach by literally quoting DK or any other person in all things. I teach from the vantage point of seeing the principle through the soul. Even so I do not see any contradiction between my writings and that of DK.

Yes, there is much symbolism in the Bible, but there are also many events which literally happened and words that were literally spoken and written down.

In the book “The Light of the Soul” DK and Alice A. Bailey commented and analyzed the mysteries and writings of Patanjali. Are you OK with that? If so then you should be OK with doing the same thing with the Bible and the words of Jesus.

That which is a mystery to the seeker is only hidden knowledge waiting to be discovered.

Some knowledge is discovered through trial and error, some through teachers, some through the emotions, some through the heart, some through the mind, and still others through intuitive levels and higher. However, when knowledge comes accept it and rejoice — believing you will receive more.

Question: You have written a lot about the Molecular Order as used by the Brotherhood of Light. Aren’t you giving away important knowledge that can be used by the dark  brotherhood?

The Molecular Order is no secret among the Dark Brotherhood. Most of their members have been on the path at one time or another and have learned teachings passed down from various masters.

Disciples of the Dark Brothers may not understand it and to them it may be exciting knowledge, but the actual Dark Brothers have molecules of their own.

When the Dark Brothers use violence against disciples of light they do so more for the purpose of stopping them and discouraging their work rather than stealing their secrets. When they do interrogate them for knowledge it is often to find out what they know so they can assess any danger to themselves.

There is one more thing. All the principles known by the Dark Brothers came to them from the Brotherhood of Light and this brotherhood is always becoming and discovering and revealing new knowledge. The Dark Brothers always want to acquire this new knowledge as it is given out. Rarely is there a time that a spiritual teacher is not betrayed and his inner teachings revealed to dark circles.

The Molecular Order of the Brotherhood of Light taps into high spiritual energy and feeds it to disciples. The Order of the Dark Brotherhood taps into the energy of matter and feeds this to their group. We thus have the forces of matter and materialism arrayed against the forces of Spirit which encompasses both spirit and matter and represents wholeness, or holiness.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. – Martin Luther King Jr.

The Sabbath Life

The Sabbath Life

Seeing a reader’s post on his struggle with his illness touched my heart. I’m glad my advice was of some assistance and wish I could do more. I would like to reach out and touch his beautiful soul and make him whole.

This earth is a tough school we are in, especially at certain stages of our journey. There are certain lessons that are painful to learn but that which has been learned through painful experience, when following the highest one knows, will be indelibly impressed upon the soul so the pilgrim will be a master of that lesson for his lifetimes of struggle to come.

I’m familiar with struggles of a number of people in this group and my heart also goes out to them. One odd thing that seems to help somehow is that none of us struggle or suffers alone. Each of us has six lives where we have all the struggle and problems we can handle which is generally followed by a seventh life that is fairly easy. For some the struggle is illness, others depression and still others just face a mountain of problems demanding a solution. Sometimes we look at carefree successful people and wish our lives were like there’s, but often we do not realize the inner struggles they face. Take one of my favorite actors, Owen Wilson. You can’t find a happier go lucky person who is also very successful, but seemingly, out of the blue, he tried to kill himself. I never did find out what his problem was but obviously he had a big one.

Six out of seven of us have all the problems we can handle. Some just handle the problems a little better than others. Then one life out of seven we have a Sabbath of rest where we live a life that is relatively free from trouble. Even here we sometimes are so programmed to have trouble that we may sabotage this life of rest. If therefore you sense that you are on your Sabbath life take advantage of it. Have fun and rest and get ready for the lives to come.

Question: Could you give us more information on the Sabbath life or direct us to a source with more information?

As far as I know there is no other teachings on this subject as I did not draw it from any outside source.

When you think of it this doctrine certainly follows the Law of Correspondences and this explains why it registers with the soul, or at least seems to be right. When you look around you it does seem that around six out of seven have all on their plate they can handle. It even seems more so when you reflect on all the people you have come close to throughout your life. Many who seem carefree have many more problems than is obvious when you get to know them. Owen Wilson, that I mentioned, earlier is a great example. He appeared to be one of the most carefree people in the universe, but then tried to commit suicide.

The people on their Sabbath life usually don’t speak up much about their lack of struggle. Everyone around them is grumbling about how difficult life is and they do not like to make others feel bad that life is going good for them. They tend to sympathize with their friends’ problems without saying anything positive or negative about their own. They do not want to rub their good fortune in the face of others. This is the reason that those taking a Sabbath may be hard to spot until you get to know them.

Now even though a person may be working under the heat of the day in one of his lives of labor — this does not mean he will not have good times, or rest or play. Look at our six days of general life. Some of us relax on Saturday or may do other labors around the house. Maybe Friday night you decide to kick back and party or relax. Even on regular nights most have a few hours to kick back and relax.

Even so, during a life of labor there will still be time to relax and play. Disciples must search their souls and sense their needs for relaxation and take what is needed.

Question: Does karma or soul progression take a break during a Sabbath life?

The soul will not only delay difficult karma during the Sabbath lives, but also during some other lives. Sometimes the debt we have to pay is beyond our psychological ability to handle. In this case the soul will often delay the debt, or lesson, until we develop the inner strength necessary to deal with it. Thus you are not always working on the negative karma you created from the previous life, but you may be working on a problem from several lives back as a main focus.

Some karma is handled during the Sabbath life, but it will not be of the nature that will create great pain or stress for the pilgrim. He may find himself having more abundance than his neighbors and use his good fortune to help others in need.

As far as the unfolding of the energy pedals goes, this moves ahead in normal progression during the Sabbath though a major surge is unlikely as this would disturb his rest.

Question: How can one recognize whether or not he is on a Sabbath life?

The Sabbath life is not problem free as no matter what advantage we may have human ingenuity always manages to complicate things and can sabotage a good situation. Even so, the person experiencing the life of rest will sense that life is easier for him than most of his friends. He will usually have fewer financial problems and when they come others will assist him. He will not get the marriage partner from hell that many laborers experience and his/her kids will provide a more positive than a negative experience.

Each of us needs circumstances a little different to have an enjoyable rest. If two people are told to take the day off and enjoy yourselves one may kick back and do nothing, but the other may go boating and water skiing. Even so, our Higher Self plans on a life of rest geared to helping us rejuvenate and ready ourselves for the six labors to come.

If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success. -James Cameron

Soul Vibration

Soul Vibration

Question: What does vibration have to do with like attracting like and complements attracting?

The expected answer is that like attracts like because of similarity of vibration. While this is true this answer is not complete enough to provide a full picture.

For one thing all of us have a similarity of vibration on some level. As you know we live in three worlds of form: The physical, emotional/astral and mental. Each of our bodies co-existing in these spheres is governed by one of the seven rays. In addition, the personality as a whole is governed by one of the rays as well as the soul and the monad.

If two people’s mental bodies were both on ray four there would be a similarity of vibration in this sphere and both would be interested in applying the intellect toward creative expression and both would have a tendency toward some of the same tastes.

The point is that each of us has some similarity of vibration even with people we cannot stand. On the other hand, no two of us have a uniform similarity of vibration with each other.

Like attracts like applies on two major levels. The first is the personality. The vast majority of humanity experience their attractions on this level.

When two meet and sense a like vibration in one of the bodies, and they focus on this instead of differences, there will be an attraction resulting in friendship. If the two focus on similarities in their astral bodies, then romantic love can result.

The higher level of attraction is through the soul. If two people with soul contact have a relationship, it will be greatly enhanced if they have several of the rays in common, especially the soul ray. But the essence of the soul has a universal similarity of vibration that stimulates love, hope and faith. Those with soul focus will have a great attraction to others with such focus, especially in this world where soul infused personalities are a rarity.

It is interesting to observe how the principle of “like attracting like” works out when applied to those centered in the personality as they relate to those centered in the soul.

At first the personality centered individual may find some similar vibrations that attracts him to the soul infused person, but sooner or later differences will loom before his eyes. He will especially sense the difference in vibration between the soul and the personality and he will not understand it. Because he does not understand he will often hate the soul infused one — sometimes becoming his mortal enemy.

On the other hand, the soul infused person will be mildly attracted to the personality person but will realize the vibration of the soul is missing. No relation can draw his full power of attraction unless the soul of the two is involved. Once the soul is touched, the personality relationships have little value or attraction to the seeker.

Question: What is the difference of vibration as it manifests as spirit, matter, light and sound?”

Yes, these all have different vibrations. Sound is generally seen as the lowest of vibration. Light is scientifically much higher and spirit, which is not recognized by science, is higher still. Matter, on the other hand, consists of many vibrations with many speeds going on all at once. On earth we have very slow vibrations such as the slow oscillations of the planet itself to movements approaching the speed of light within the atom.

When we think sound, we think of sound that we can hear with the ear, but there are many sounds beyond our hearing. There are sounds that can be heard by children but not adults. There are sounds that can be heard by animals, but not humans. And there are sounds beyond the range of the physical hearing of any living entity on earth.

The same goes for light. When we think of light, we think of light we can see with the eyes, but there are many grades of light in existence we cannot see. On one hand, we have the infrared which has too low of a wavelength or vibration to be seen with the human eye and then, on the other, we have ultra violet which is too high of a frequency to be seen.

These vibrations just relate to the physical, but in the higher worlds there is also sound and light with a vibration so high that it would stagger the imagination of the orthodox scientists.

Question: What does it mean when it is said you respond to the vibration of another person? What are you really responding to?

The full meaning lies outside the idea of mere similarity of vibration, but more toward a focus on similarities. When an attraction occurs something usually happened first to stimulate the attention so the two focus on that which is similar rather than the differences. We respond to vibration, but first there must be focused attention on that vibration.

Contemplate on this seed thought:

“In the beginning was the word, the sound, the vibration, the light and the form.”

In the beginning the Purpose of God was projected as a wavelength which was a symbol of the Trinity of creation. All symbols are words, therefore, in the beginning was the Word.

This Word multiplied until the life of God was immersed in sound.

Frequency increased until many vibrations produced differentiation.

When differentiation reached a point of tension, light and form appeared simultaneously.

Question: Why do you say that the soul infused person will find little value in personality relationships when you also say that we can fall in love with anyone by looking at their soul?

My teachings have been consistent on this. The soul infused personality keeps his mind centered in the light; has removed illusions that block the view of the soul, and is ever conscientious about following the soul.

Even though the personality-centered person is polarized in the lower nature he is still under the influence of stepped-down soul energy. Soul energy is stepped-down an octave or two and manifests as romantic love and other feelings in the emotional body.

Even though the personality-centered person does not actively seek soul energy and is not polarized in it he can open the door to the unfettered soul through unselfish love for another person. Thus the average person can fall in love and in that state see only the good, the beautiful, and the true for long enough to manifest the love of the soul.

Because he or she is not soul infused he will shift out of the soul and deal with his mate on a personality level most of the time. Their relationship will depend on similarity of interests (more than soul energy) to keep them together, even though love may open the door to the soul from time-to-time.

Question: Will a marriage succeed if a soul infused person marries one in the personality?

Generally, it will fail and the person who will be most frustrated will be the personality-centered one. He or she will feel their soul infused mate is stubborn and does not love and respect him/her and become more angry and bitter until the relationship collapses. This person cannot handle the fact that his mate does not deviate from soul purpose which is not understood by the personality.

If the personality-centered person cannot be jolted back into the soul from time-to-time, the relationship will fail. The soul infused person should have a mate who is sensitive to soul energy or the relationship will be a nightmare and he would be better off to remain single. Two personality people can be successfully married if their interests and values are similar but they will not share the deep spiritual sharing that can be had by two who are soul infused.

Like Attracts Like

Like Attracts Like

Does the fact that opposites seem to attract contradict this principle of like attracting like??

Actually, the core principled that makes both of these work is the same. There is spiritual life and essence in all things whether there is like attracting like or two beings who hate each other. In both cases the spiritual essence lives in a state of oneness with the Source. The difference is that the like which is attracted to like has eyes open to the soul because differences are not getting in the way of seeing this spiritual essence. The two who hate each other still have that essence within that is attracted, but the attention on differences throws up a veil so the essence is not seen and no attraction results. Instead, repulsion occurs.

Seeing the soul causes vision of similarities and seeing the differences causes vision to overlook the soul and only see the separation.

In the case of opposites attracting something else happens. The differences are seen, but the focus is still on the soul and not the outer differences. In this case seeing the differences does not create greater separation. Because the soul is the point of focus the differences will be seen as a part of the whole rather than a separation from the whole. The differences will be seen as complimentary and stimulate loved and appreciation rather than hate and disgust.

Magnetism is activated when oneness as seen through the eyes of the soul. When oneness is seen as the state of joy at the end of our journey then the consciousness of two beings will have an interplay of energy that indeed creates a magnetic force.

We’ll call these two principles that of “affinity and compliments.” These two are part of a greater principle that bring the many back to the one.

These principles largely determine whether our future will be heaven or hell.

Heaven or hell in this life is largely determined by the people and associations that come into our lives. If one does not look through the eyes of the soul his consciousness will focus upon differences that divide and he will attract people to him with annoying differences. His life will thus be hell on earth, and in the next world he will be around entities of a similar negative focus to his own, and will not be stimulated by many degrees of consciousness as we have here on earth.

The person focused on the soul will draw to him others like himself, which will be a pleasant or heavenly experience, because the love of the soul will be shared. This heavenly sharing will be amplified in the next world because unloving people will not have access to interfere with the love of the soul as they attempt to do here on the earth.

The greater principle governing affinity and compliments is the law or principle of vibration.

What does vibration have to do with like attracting like and compliments attracting?

What is the difference of vibration as it manifests as spirit, matter, light and sound?

What does it mean when it is said you respond to the vibration of another person? What are you really responding to?

Contemplate comment on this seed thought: “In the beginning was the word, the sound, the vibration, the light and the form.”

Concerning vibration DK said this:

“The sensitivity of the mechanism of the soul to spiritual vibration has to be cultivated and existing sensitivity to lower psychic impressions has to be tuned out; so many voices clamour for attention, so many impressions emanating from the physical and astral forms around us register upon our consciousness, that the vibrations and sounds coming from the subjective and spiritual world are lost and not registered and recorded. You will find it interesting to note, at the end of a few years, the difference in the data recorded and the development of sensitivity to the right kind of impression. This can only be realised after much time has elapsed and much spurious material has been eliminated, after being recognised for what it is: astralism, spurious claims and thoughtforms.” (Discipleship in the New Age,” Vol 1, Pg 15, by Alice A. Bailey)

DK here gives us some good advice. Contemplate this and expand upon it by asking:

“What does my own vibration have to do with contacting higher spiritual vibration? Am I to alter my vibration, manifest an existing vibration, create a new one or what?”

Contemplate what you must do with your own vibration to contact one that is higher.

Reader Question: “It’s quite possible that I did get some contact with a higher life/soul/whatever, but threw the baby out with the bath water. What if that which you once would have called “the highest you know” is something that in retrospect looks like a mistake? Are you correct now, or were you correct then? Anyway, I’d rather not have to wait until a future life to get another shot at it… so, this topic is very, very interesting to me.”

JJ: Following the highest you know is never a mistake, even though the choice made may be entirely incorrect on hindsight. The mistake would be to make a decision not in alignment with your highest perception or worse yet, do nothing.

It’s a little like this: A traveler has three paths before him but only one leads to the desired destination. He listens to opinions from fellow travelers, but the choice is not clear. He makes his best guess and proceeds. After a short distance he discovers that he chose the wrong path. He retraces his steps and chooses again. This time he chooses correctly.

His first choice was a wrong choice, but it was not a mistake. Why? Because the making the decision, right or wrong, was the right thing to do. It was a necessary act to find the true path. A necessary step is not a mistake.

I was in the Mormon Church in my younger years and on reflection the highest I knew back then involved many errors. BUT, because I was true to myself and followed the highest I knew I was lead to seeing through many illusions and made numerous corrections.

Now in a higher cycle I still follow the highest I know. Is all I see and teach perfection? Of course not. As time progresses, I will see more and fill in more missing pieces that will bring higher vision still. May we all do the same.

One of my favorite quotes from DK  sheds further light on vibration:

“Students would also do well to ponder on the distinction between the breath and the Sound, between the process of breathing and of creating directed vibratory activity. The one is related to Time and the other to Space and they are distinct from each other; and (as the Old Commentary puts it) “the Sound, the final and yet initiating Sound, concerns that which is neither Time nor Space; it lies outside the manifested All, the Source of all that is and yet is naught. (No thing. A.A.B.)” Rays and Initiations, Pages 54-55

It is interesting that breath is related to time and sound to space. This corresponds to Einstein’s fourth dimension of Space-Time.

Then the third creative force “is neither Time nor Space; it lies outside the manifested All, the Source of all that is and yet is naught.”

This would be the energy I have called Purpose.

Deep question: How is breath related to time and sound to space?

“I love my past. I love my present. I’m not ashamed of what I’ve had, and I’m not sad because I have it no longer.” — Colette (1873 – 1954), “The Last of Cheri,” 1926

Contemplation and Seed Thoughts

Contemplation and Seed Thoughts

I have said numerous times that contemplation is the highest form of meditation. Instead of letting the mind go blank and seeking peace and formlessness the seeker finds a phrase, idea or thought to plant in his mind. Instead of nothingness leading to bliss and peace he experiences a stirring of thought leading to higher thought.

Liken your consciousness to a pool of water. If there is too much stillness stagnation is the result. If it is always in motion then the water will never be pure but always mixed with impurities.

It takes the right mixture of stillness and motion to produce the purest water.

It takes the key of judgement in the seeker to balance the stillness and the motion of thought to see the highest light, feel the fullness of love, and to be consumed with the fire of Purpose.

That said, contemplate the principle behind contemplation itself and put it into action by first planting the following seed thought:

“In order to ascend above all things, I must first descend below all things. Am I ascending or descending? Am I increasing or decreasing? Where am I on the cycle of Becoming? Do I have a direction? What is it?”

Now contemplate the above seed thought and see what comes.

Question: “I noticed the tingling sensation in the third eye is the buildup of energy. I also noticed that the energy is not always there but that I can build it up when I meditate and breath in and out and the energy returns. Would I be correct in assuming that with this energy build up, this would be the best time to contemplate or plant our seed thoughts?”

JJ: Not necessarily. Such sensations indicate that new energy petals are opening up and this is a time for adjustment. During this transition time it is often more difficult than usual to contemplate. Try to follow your soul as to how you meditate during this period and do not overdue it. Concentrate instead on adjusting to the energies until they feel normal and do not over-stimulate the centers where these sensations are occurring.

As far as the dream state goes — to understand this we must understand what happens at sleep. During sleep our mental vehicle leaves and goes to other spheres. Because it is not connected to the brain during sleep there is no memory of what we did in this body upon awakening. However, our emotional body is still connected to our physical during sleep and because it feels instead of thinks we have dreams representing feelings without logical thought connected to them. This is why dreams are so nonsensical. Some put a lot of attention on lucid dreaming by drawing some mental energy into the dream state. This can actually take away some attention of the mind from its activities in higher spheres. A better course is to follow the mental body out of the physical during sleep by concentrating on the third eye and staying focused in your mental self as you fall asleep.

I have said that contemplation is the highest form of meditation and some have disagreed with this. The reason for the disagreement is because of a narrow view of the range in which contemplation can be used.

Contemplation is used on many more levels than staring at a flame or putting attention on a key phrase. If one sees contemplation as something to be used in a narrow spectrum then yes, it would seem right to question my statement. But, on the contrary, there are many facets, levels and octaves of contemplation.

In the past, teachers have given students various assignments to contemplate. It may be something simple such as contemplating flowers and bees or something in nature, to one’s breath to a key phrase of some kind.

All these are well and good and have their benefits but they are merely steps to jump start the seeker into the habit of contemplation so he can learn to initiate on his own and move ahead to higher levels.

The highest thing a teacher can do for a student, as far as contemplation goes, is to give him or her seed thoughts and encourage them to be planted in the highest levels of his consciousness with the idea of sprouting forth new and useful knowledge. Success requires planting contemplating and focused attention. “Hold your mind steady in the light” is a good seed thought to ensure success in dealing with this principle.

So, what then are the higher levels of contemplation to which the student should aspire?

He is to contemplate the formless from which creation and form will come. The next step is to move beyond the black-and-white words planted in the mind and seek to understand the principles behind the words. He is to contemplate ideas and principles followed by the form they will take when manifested.

Where does an idea come from and how is it grasped? An idea itself has no form, but as soon as it enters the mind of the seeker many forms spring forth before the inner mind and if the contemplation continues the principles involved in the idea will come to the understanding and creation will be the end result.

The creation of the universe began with an idea that was contemplated by Divine Intelligence. When thought was sustained through contemplation the principles involved in creation became understood and the result was manifestation — the creation of the world you and I inhabit.

Contemplation of the higher principles in the formless worlds causes many a seeker to be absent-minded, as the world calls the term. Many great thinkers in our history have had this problem and did not realize that the only cure was to stop contemplating in their waking hours. Fortunately, Einstein, Tesla, Edison and other greats were not bothered with a little absentmindedness and gave out many gifts to the world.

Through contemplation all can become a giver of good gifts.

Question: What is the IDEAL, formless, seedless, objectless meditation DK refers to in this quote?

“Only when all forms and the field of knowledge itself are lost sight of, and the knower recognizes himself for what he essentially is (being lost in contemplation of his own pure spiritual nature), can ideal, formless, seedless, objectless meditation be arrived at.” Light of the Soul, Page 101

DK here is talking about contemplative meditation (“being lost in contemplation”) which I call a positive meditation as opposed to the negative meditation which is passive where the student just lets go and empties himself.

He is talking about a state that few have arrived at — the highest which the student can aspire in his foreseeable future, but not the absolute highest.

To arrive at this state the student must first master the art of contemplation. He starts with focusing his attention using many of the standard methods taught in the world. Many current students have mastered the basic attention step in past lives and are ready to concentrate on seed thoughts. When they have learned to make seed thoughts expand through contemplation then they are ready to go to the Buddhic plane and higher where “black-and-white” seed thoughts are not used but the seeker plunges his contemplative skills into the formless where he realizes his oneness with God. Here he senses the Oneness Principle and the understanding of all principles are available to him. When he withdraws from the formless his physical brain will register some of the principles that passed through his contemplative self and his consciousness and understanding will be enhanced.

In the formless there is no black-and-white seed thought but there is still seed and that seed is whatever is there to be experienced and discovered. Your soul will bring down to the physical brain that which is needed in the physical reality.

Most of the great discoveries that have been grasped by mankind have been through formless contemplation. Einstein was sometimes so lost in thought on his walks that when he came back to the physical, he didn’t know where he was where he was. He was lost in formless contemplation and when he came back his physical brain only registered a small portion of what he experienced, but that small portion was a large portion for mankind.

That which was referred by DK is contemplative meditation and does not take you to the astral world. That which can open up the astral world is non contemplative negative meditation with no seed. This type of meditation will take the seeker to his own level. If he is astral (which most people are) it will take him to the astral level. However, through contemplation an astral person can reach up to a higher level than normal.

He is pointing toward a goal toward which the disciple should aspire, but each disciple must realize that he must take a step at a time and cannot achieve mastery in one flying leap. The one giant step toward liberation is an astral delusion that sidetracks many seekers for long periods of time. It varies from the Christian who thinks he has found the ultimate salvation to the new ager who has found the ultimate dimension or consciousness.

The last veil of illusion is withdrawn when the disciple, through contemplation, realizes his true nature as being one with God. For most such believers this is an academic thing, but to the one who knows it is an understanding that cannot be fully communicated to those who do not have this realization.

I received  some pushback from the previous  comments to which I replied as follows:

To make any sense from this discussion one must ask this question: What benefits am I seeking from meditation?

Do you just want to smell flowers, or perhaps something much loftier as in creating flowers? Perhaps that would involve creating flowers that have never been and sharing beauty that has not before been comprehended.

If one merely wants to smell flowers then the negative meditation of letting go and focussing on the now and the stillness works fine. But if one wants to do something greater as in creating the flowers (or some other creation) then he must contemplate. If one desires to create then contemplation is the highest form of meditation.

Even in this the seeker must use the two forms of the art. He must plant a seed or seeds into the still dark soil of the mind and the formless higher realms. Then he must water this soil with his focused attention. Then in a period where he relaxes and rests in a negative meditation the seeds sprout up and grow as if on its own. The seeker then examines the new plant and guides its creation and learns therefrom. He thus shares in the joy of creation.

Can we expect anything greater from any meditation than pure joy?

Nay.

This is why contemplation is the highest form of meditation, for without contemplation the highest joy cannot be found.

“Joy settles within the heart But has winged its way from the secret place within the head. I am that bird of joy, Therefore, with joy I serve.” — Djwhal Khul [DK]

Four Steps to Awaken

The First Step to Awakening

I do not recall anyone listing the steps each of us must take to fully awaken and return to the eternal world ACIM calls heaven. In fact, I have had students tell me that there are no steps for we are either awake or asleep so it appears that is the first matter than needs clarification.

Chapter Six talks about four major steps to return and then the Course tells us of others that are steps within steps so if we accept the Course, we need to accept that there are steps. After all, it clearly tells us that it was given to us to “teach us, step by step, how to return to the eternal Self we thought we lost.” W-pI.rV.in.5

One could even say the workbook contains 365 steps leading to our awakening.

The first of the four major steps is mentioned here:

“The first step in the reversal or undoing process is the undoing of the getting concept. Accordingly, the Holy Spirit’s first lesson was ‘To have, give all to all.’” T-6.V.B.3

You’d think the first step would involve forgiveness, judgment or something to do with love, but instead it seems to be a subject less emphasized in the Course. “To have, give all to all.” is only mentioned once, and furthermore what does it mean?

Are we supposed to empty our bank accounts and give all our money away? Should we give away all our possessions, our homes, our vehicles and even our children? If we did that we would not have, but be destitute, so what is really being said here?

As you read on in this chapter you discover that it is telling us that the thought system of the ego needs to be replaced with the true one that exists in heaven. When we give within the ego’s thought system we lose. Here in this world when you give $100 you lose it for you no longer possess it. This giving is considered a sacrifice for “The gifts you offer to the ego are always experienced as sacrifices.” T-7.VII.11 and “sacrifice of any kind is nothing but a limitation imposed on giving.” T-15.X.2 “if there is sacrifice, someone must pay and someone must get.” T-15.X.5

On the other hand, “He (the Holy Spirit) asks no sacrifice of anyone.” T-25.IX.3

How then can we give all to all without any sacrifice or a loss of that which is given?

To understand we must remember that the Course tells us that this world is an illusion and is not real. Anything that seems to happen in it is not even considered a happening from the view of eternity. Therefore, all gifts pertaining to this world do not even exist and are not true gifts at all. From the viewpoint of heaven, when we sacrifice and give physical gifts, nothing has happened and no real giving has occurred.

If giving in this world doesn’t count then how do we give all to all as a first step to returning home?

We have to practice true giving which transcends the material world. In heaven we share all things that are eternal such as ideas, thought, mind, Spirit, love, joy, peace, purpose, creation, identity, and life itself.

The first step then is to realize what true giving is, that it involves no sacrifice for “God’s gifts will never lessen when they are given away. They but increase thereby.” W-pI.105.3.

Ideas for instance are shared gifts in heaven and

“If you share an idea, however, you do not lessen it. All of it is still yours although all of it has been given away. T-5.I.1 In addition “Thoughts increase by being given away.” T-5.I.2

The first step then turns our focus from giving as the ego understands it to giving on earth as it is in heaven, in other words, giving eternal things.

Lesson 108 deals with true giving. The headline says “To give and to receive are one in truth.”

Then it gives this exercise:

“To give is to receive.  Today we will attempt to offer peace to everyone, and see how quickly peace returns to us.” W-pI.108.7

So, in the lesson dealing with the first step, we are told “to offer peace to everyone.”

How do we do this?  It helps to know that Peace is the state where love abides, and seeks to share itself.” S-1.II.7

To share peace then we share all eternal values related to love, and we will forgive, not hold a grievance, seek to remove guilt, heal, and resist the temptation to cause conflict with others. It is important to speak kindly so our brothers will not feel they are being attacked or criticized. The greatest enemy to peace is a grievance manifesting in a brother.

Perhaps the most important thing is to be at peace yourself. If this is the case others will sense your peace and be attracted to you just to enjoy the radiation of your presence.

Concerning the first step we are told, “The way out of conflict between two opposing thought systems is clearly to choose one and relinquish the other.” T-6.V.B.5

Letting go of this reality containing the “getting concept” is pretty difficult. For instance, most of us give our time and talents in exchange for money on which to live, and then we give that money in exchange for things that sustain us.

If we were to awake from the dream, we would not be relying on this thought system, yet while we are in it, we find it difficult to let it go, for we try to incorporate both thought systems and “For a time, then, he is receiving conflicting messages and accepting both.” T-6.V.B.4

The real first step then is found in the first lesson which states: “Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything.”

These things that are related to giving and receiving in this world are part of an illusion with no eternal meaning, and this world must be seen as an illusion before we can let it go and totally embrace the sharing of ideas, love and other qualities eternal. As such sharing increases, the value of giving and receiving of a material nature will decrease.

“A major learning goal this course has set is to reverse your view of giving, so you can receive. For giving has become a source of fear, and so you would avoid the only means by which you can receive. Accept God’s peace and joy, and you will learn a different way of looking at a gift. God’s gifts will never lessen when they are given away. They but increase thereby.” W-pI.105.3

The Second Step

We previously covered the first step which is called “the beginning of the thought reversal.” T-6.V.C.3 In this world  we fear giving “all to all” for if we did we would soon be destitute. Thus, our giving is extremely limited because of fear. The first step then is to focus on giving things eternal which are not visible to the eyes of this world such as ideas, thought, mind, Spirit, love, joy, peace, and purpose.

In the first step we realized there are two thought systems with giving and having being central to both. In the ego’s system giving involves sacrifice and is limited. Instead, the Holy Spirit’s giving involves no sacrifice and only brings increase. In this first step we see the two paths and favor the eternal one though we still feel we must deal with the giving and receiving as it plays out in the world. “For a time, then, he is receiving conflicting messages and accepting both.” T-6.V.B.4

The second step then will help remove the conflict.

“The second step is a positive affirmation of what you want. This, then, is a step in the direction out of conflict, since it means that alternatives have been considered, and one has been chosen as more desirable.” T-6.V.B.8

In the first step then we realize that there is an alternative to the ego’s thought system, but it seems too idealistic and too good to be true. The student would like to follow the one from the Holy Spirit, but he is not sure it is possible so he is conflicted. The way out of the conflict is to make “a positive affirmation of what you want.”

In the first step the true thought system seemed nice, but you did not fully embrace it. To do this you must totally desire it because “nothing is difficult that is wholly desired. To desire wholly is to create, and creating cannot be difficult if God Himself created you as a creator.” T-6.V.B.8

To solidify the seeker in the true thought system then he must make positive affirmations of what he wants from that system which would include peace, love, joy and abundance. You want to give freely without sacrifice and have increase rather than loss. This seems too good to be true, but you have the powers of creation so it can be done. Create affirmations in your own words about those things you really want in the true reality. Here are just three of many possible examples:

“I give everything, yet still have everything.

I have the peace of God and share it.

I see the innocent Son of God in all my brothers and sisters.”

To solidify our focus on this second step we are told this:

“To have peace, teach peace to learn it.” T-6.V.B.7

To awaken then we all must become teachers as well as students. For ages we have sought peace, but to completely fulfill this desire we must teach it, for to learn a thing completely always involves teaching of some kind.

Another reason teaching is so important is that we cannot go home alone and “You will not trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit, or believe that it is for you unless you hear it in others.” T-9.II.6

Teach others the path to peace and you will secure it within yourself.

The tendency of many is to seek enlightenment for themselves and let others find their own way, but the Course places strong emphasis on sharing, for we need to take our brothers with us. To teach what we have learned about the path of awakening we need to keep an eye open for others who may be ready to learn. One can start with friends and family. Beyond that he can join groups on the internet and share thoughts.

Finally, it says this about the second step:

“The second step, then, is still perceptual, although it is a giant step toward the unified perception that reflects God’s knowing. As you take this step and hold this direction, you will be pushing toward the center of your thought system, where the fundamental change will occur. At the second step progress is intermittent, but the second step is easier than the first because it follows. Realizing that it must follow is a demonstration of a growing awareness that the Holy Spirit will lead you on.” T-6.V.B.9

Indeed, may we all have that “growing awareness that the Holy Spirit will lead you on.”

Vigilance for the Kingdom

The Third Step to Awakening

“The Holy Spirit’s third lesson is: Be vigilant only for God and His Kingdom.” T-6.V.C.2

We are told that “This is a major step toward fundamental change.” T-6.V.C.3

So, how then are we to be vigilant only for God and His Kingdom?

If you just go by the statement itself one might think it is telling us to be full of zeal as a missionary for ACIM and spread the word like a fundamentalist missionary, but the context reveals this is not the case. The vigilance that is encourages concerns what happens inward, not outward.

What then are we supposed to direct our vigilance toward?

In a nutshell it is toward following the Holy Spirit rather than the ego, or our lower desires.

The problem is that many think they are following the Holy Spirit when they are really following the ego. The Course therefore gives us some additional details of where our vigilance needs to be directed so this mistake can be minimized.

“The Holy Spirit is evaluative, and must be. He sorts out the true from the false in your mind, and teaches you to judge every thought you allow to enter it in the light of what God put there. Whatever is in accord with this light He retains, to strengthen the Kingdom in you. `What is partly in accord with it He accepts and purifies. But what is out of accord entirely He rejects by judging against. This is how He keeps the Kingdom perfectly consistent and perfectly unified.” T-6.V.C.1

The goal then is to keep us “perfectly unified” on earth as it is in heaven. When we watch the interplay of various students arguing about many of the course teachings, we see that many are far from achieving this step. The Holy Spirit will not contradict itself and tell one student that something is true, and then another student something that contradicts, neither will he offer one choice to you and a different one to me.

The union of souls occurs through all receiving the same directions from the same spirit which produces true union among those who have taken this third step.

In taking this step “You create by your true being, but what you are you must learn to remember. The way to remember it is inherent in the third step,T-6.V.C.5

An important ingredient of this step is that the Holy Spirit “sorts out the true from the false in your mind.” T-6.V.C.1

The main obstacle that prevents students from taking this third step is the belief that truth is different for everyone or that we can awaken with conflicting truth and error in our minds. The Holy Spirit does not even see error, so if any two people receive from Him there will be no conflict, but only agreement.

This lesson of seeing the truth as true is called “the hardest lesson you will ever learn”

“The Holy Spirit, seeing where you are but knowing you are elsewhere, begins His lesson in simplicity with the fundamental teaching that truth is true. This is the hardest lesson you will ever learn, and in the end the only one.” T-14.II.2

Why is this such a hard lesson to learn? Because we see how difficult it seems to be to reach 100% agreement with your bother though the Holy Spirit. This causes us to make excuses for the error that must be involved, but “When you teach anyone that truth is true, you learn it with him. And so you learn that what seemed hardest was the easiest.” T-14.II.5

This quote gives additional clarity:

“Salvation is the recognition that the truth is true, and nothing else is true. This you have heard before, but may not yet accept both parts of it. Without the first, the second has no meaning. But without the second, is the first no longer true. Truth cannot have an opposite. This can not be too often said and thought about. For if what is not true is true as well as what is true, then part of truth is false. And truth has lost its meaning. Nothing but the truth is true, and what is false is false.” W-pI.152.3

The ego does not like this quote for it leads to clarity and away from confusion and conflict. The ego teaches that the truth is different for everyone and you can successfully complete the course by following your own truth and your own interpretation and avoid the oneness with your brother which will happen under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

This third step of receiving truth and being one with the Holy Spirit is a key to remembering who we really are:

“Choosing through the Holy Spirit will lead you to the Kingdom. You create by your true being, but what you are you must learn to remember. The way to remember it is inherent in the third step.” T-6.V.C.5

“The third step is thus one of protection for your mind, allowing you to identify only with the center, where God placed the altar to Himself.” T-6.V.C.7

May we take this third step together.
