Is 3I/Atlas a Spacecraft?

Is 3I/Atlas a Spacecraft?

I thought I would make a few comments on the controversial interstellar comet called 3I/Atlas.

Quite a few in the alternative spiritual group seem to think it is an intelligently designed spacecraft. Since it is about 12.5 miles in diameter that would make it an extremely large one, so some feel it is a large mother ship that may soon be releasing probes to scout around our solar system.

Like most celestial objects this one exhibits a few anomalies. The most significant one is that it entered our solar system at just the right angle so its trajectory comes fairly close to three of our planets.  Its closest approach is about 60 million miles from Venus, 17.6 million miles from Mars and 33.5 million miles from Jupiter.

These are still quite lengthy distances – keep in mind that our moon is only around a quarter of a million miles from earth so 17-60 million miles away is not close enough for a complete probing and discovery.

The comet misses the earth by quite a distance, about 168 million miles or about 700 times further away than the moon. Then from October 1, 2025, to November 9 it will be on the other side of the sun where we will be unable to view it. This just fuels the speculation, for believers are saying that they know that the earth has intelligent life and they are not coming close for they want to avoid detection. Then they are hiding behind the sun for over a month to perform a secret probing that they do not want us to see.

That all makes good science fiction and I personally would like to see proof of intelligent life beyond the earth, but the chances of this being it are very slim.

Consider this. The comet is traveling at approximately 137,000 miles per hour. That is fast by our earthly standards but as far as interstellar travel goes that is very slow. If it originated from our nearest star system of Alpha Centauri at that speed it would take over 21,000 years to reach us.

But it did not come from that direction. After much calculation astronomers believe that it originated in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, near the Milky Way’s Galactic Center. This suggests it was ejected billions of years ago from a low-metallicity star system in the galaxy’s thin disk around 10 billion years ago making it older than our Solar System.

This means that the comet originated not only before there was life on earth, but before the earth and sun even existed.

Wherever it is from it obviously originated too far back in time to be a probe to find out more about life in or solar system or to consider the avoiding of human detection.  After all, it has only been about a hundred years that we have had the technology to detect a comet like this.

It would take a long article to give all the pros and cons as to whether this is a spacecraft but 3I/Atlas shows no deliberate maneuvers, deceleration for rendezvous, or signals in route – none observed, despite SETI scans yielding silence.

Now anything is possible. It could be remotely possible that it is an abandoned mother ship left behind billions of years ago.  Or perhaps it did travel faster than light but slowed down to a sneaky, but steady crawl when it entered our system.

Overall Occam’s razor favors it is a natural made comet. I would give odds of around 99% in this direction.

Space isn’t remote at all. It’s only an hour’s drive away if your car could go straight upwards. – Fred Hoyle
