The Spiritual Journey

The Spiritual Journey

I’ve been having some dialog with a fellow seeker who came from a Christian background and has been transitioning to esoteric teachings.  I took a similar journey. When I first came across one of the Bailey books around 1966, I had just returned from a two-year mission for the Mormon church and was very dedicated.

I was in a used bookstore looking at books in the new age-self-improvement section when the owner seemed to notice I was interested in unusual spiritually related books. He pulled a book off the top shelf and handed it to me and said, “I think you may find this book interesting.”

The book was titled “Letters on Occult Meditation” by Alice A. Bailey. Now many Christian believers associate the word “occult” with satanism, so the title itself tested my open mind. I then opened the book and noticed a lengthy list of other books by the same author.

“The Consciousness of the Atom” caught my attention and sounded interesting. Next my eyes registered, “A Treatise on Cosmic Fire.” Strange title I thought., What in the world is cosmic fire? Then Reappearance of the Christ and Telepathy sounded interesting.

Basically, it was this booklist that caused me to buy the book. I was fascinated with some of the titles.

I took the book home and read the first 20 pages or so and then put it down contemplating the following thoughts.

Thought number one: Whoever wrote this is the most intelligent author I had read in my life. Such great intelligence tells me I should take the writing seriously.

Thought number two: It looked like a number of his teachings were not in harmony with the teachings of my church, especially reincarnation. My church taught that this was a doctrine from the devil.

I realized that if I studied the Bailey books and embraced them that my spiritual life would be drastically altered, and was not ready for such a transition.  I put the book on the bookshelf and didn’t read anything else from the Bailey material for five more years.

After that time passed, I had reached a point of tension, discovered the truth of reincarnation, and decided to closely examine the teachings. It seemed that “A Treatise on White Magic” had one of the best selections of teachings so I started with that. I decided to read the book all the way through whether I understood it or not.

By the time I had finished I was hooked and decided to read all the books. The knowledge that I gained led me out of the church into greater vistas of learning.

What was interesting was that when I left the church, I did not leave behind the teachings that registered with my soul. After all, if a principle is true when you are in a religion it is also true when you are outside of it. In most cases the additional knowledge I learned did not destroy that which I had cherished in the past. Instead, it added to it and completed the picture.

I found it fascinating that in many cases both the Bible and Mormon scriptures are more in harmony with esoteric teachings than is the church. For instance, after a little research I found they both teach about reincarnation and published a couple treatises to that effect. Here are the links: LINK 1  LINK 2

Another thing that tested my open mind was the teaching that Jesus and the Christ are two separate individuals. Jesus was an advanced disciple who shared a body with the Christ who entered into him at his baptism.

I was amazed when I did some research to find that the scriptures affirm that this was a true teaching. Here are some links: LINK 1  LINK2

Then there were teachings on God and Christ that seemed to contradict the Bailey and other esoteric teachings. I had always had a problem with my church’s teachings about Christ. They saw him as the Word that created all the worlds in the universe as the King James version seems to indicate.  Out of all the trillions of worlds out there we just seemed to be the lucky one that the creator came to. What are the odds?

The esoteric teachings made much more sense. The Word is a principle behind all creation that created all the worlds in time and space. The Christ of our world was the first among us to contact the inner Christ that is in us all and manifest it.  He is not the only one for he said this:

“He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.” John 14:12

Then he prayed that his disciples “may be one, as we are.” John 17:11

Jesus realized that he was not alone as the creator of just this earth, but one of the many sons of God mentioned by Job.

“Where was thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding…When the morning stars sang together, and ALL THE SONS OF GOD shouted for joy?” Job 38:4&6

Who are the “sons of God”? The scriptures give a clear answer. John the Beloved said: “WE are the sons of God…” I John 3:2

Notice that Job equated the Sons of God with the morning stars and Jesus said: “I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” Rev 22:15

We were there with the bright Morning Star we call the Christ, but even he is one of many. No matter how high you go in this universe there are others still higher as indicated here:

“If thou see the oppressions of the poor, and violent judgements, and justice perverted, in the province, wonder not at this matter: for he that is high hath another higher, and there are others still higher than these.” Eccl 5:8

There is a chain of hierarchy and its purpose is to implement the principle behind the name of Jesus Christ. The name itself means “anointed to deliver.” If you take upon yourself the name of Jesus Christ you commit to reach out your hand to those below you in understanding and bring them up to where you are. Then one higher than you will reach out and pull you up higher because he is anointed to deliver.

The whole chain of the hierarchy of all the worlds has the purpose of delivering those below to become like those above, fulfilling the command to “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matt 5:48

I have written a whole book explaining the Hierarchy of the Gods. You can find it at this link:

Overall then I have found the Bailey writings in particular to be more in harmony with the scriptures than any of the churches are in harmony with them.

That doesn’t mean that I accept all the Bailey writings without giving them critical thought. Djwahl Khul, who gave the teachings to Alice A. Bailey, has proved himself enough to me to become an earned authority. If I come across something that runs contrary to my thinking, I never instantly dismiss it, but give it weight and reflect on it. Often, I later discover he was correct though there are still several items I have on the shelf.

He is a Master of Wisdom and sees from a higher angle of vision than us mere mortals but is not perfect so a seeker should always get soul confirmation no matter how reliable you think the source is.

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance- it is the illusion of knowledge. – Daniel J. Boorstin
