Local Posts #15, Part One

[Compiler's Note:  The "Local Posts" series of articles found here in "The Archives" are a collection of exchanges between JJ Dewey and others participating on a local online newspaper blog, and were subsequently re-posted by JJ Dewey on The Keys Of Knowledge discussion group. Because of the length of the original post, the archived version of this post was broken up into multiple parts. This is Part One. A link to Part Two can be found at the end of this article.]

Note from JJ:  When I talk about the left and the right I am not necessarily talking about Democrats and Republicans or conservatives and liberals, but I see the true Left as on the side of error and illusion and the Right as headed toward the right hand path.

JJ:

I thought the local media gave reasonably fair coverage of the Tea Parties. The local reporters are not perfect, but they are not so agenda driven as the national media.

The event was significant, especially when you consider that most of those who participated were working people taking time off on a regular work day. Fox was the only network that gave it the coverage it deserved and the pathetic thing is they were criticized for just doing their job.

Most of the other national media showed their bias by ignoring the event as much as possible and the little attention they did pay was confrontational.

How much intelligence does it take to surmise that lack of coverage for half of America will result in less participation by those people? A prime example is the New York Times, over a billion in debt and borrowing money at 18% interest just to meet payroll.

Meanwhile Fox is rolling in money because it fairly reports the news of the left and the right.

JJ:

Since Earth Day just passed I thought it would be interesting to look back to the first one held in 1970 and take a look at what they were predicting:

"The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.

"We have about five more years at the outside to do something." (Kenneth Watt, Ecologist)

"Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support [...] the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution [...] by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half...." (Life Magazine, January 1970)

"Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." (George Wald, Harvard Biologist)

"Boiseriver"

"Check again -- Fox revenues are down significantly."

JJ:

Read this and weep:

"One bright spot was cable networks, including Fox News. The division reported income of $428 million, up $91 million in the period a year ago. Fox News increased its operating income by 32 percent." (New York Times Feb 5, 2009)

Like I said, they are rolling in money because they are fair and balanced.

"TWall":

"So Joe, are you the opening act at the new comedy club this weekend?"

JJ:

I see from your profile that a favorite source of news for you is the comic Jon Stewart. That explains a lot.

Speaking of profiles -- why do not more of you tell us about yourselves. Are you afraid that a foaming-at-the-mouth right or left-winger will stalk you?

"Aussie":

"I miss the reasoned voices of Phil Batt and Cecil Andrus (two respected Idaho politicians). Where have all the real leaders gone?"

JJ:

We ought to follow their examples and treat each other with a little class.

JJ:

Mr. Esget's letter makes no sense. (The letter attacked business in America) Obviously he has never been in business for himself.

No business large, small or medium has ever forced me to buy their product or give them protection money. Everything I have ever bought from any business has been because I wanted that product and was willing to pay for it.

Not so with government. They take my taxes and force me to pay for many things I do not want to buy. They even force me to take out loans (in connection with other citizens) that will strap my grandchildren with debt.

No business has forced me to do such wild-eyed things.

JJ:

I agree that if he is talking about the General Motors and/or Government situation that there is indeed a problem. It is possible that we may eventually be dictated as to what kind of car is even available to buy.

As it is, we still have Toyota, Honda, etc., to provide variety.

"TWall":

"I honestly believe every country in the world needs to propose some kind of child limit on families. 2 or 3 tops, we don't need families of 10 kids anymore to work our land."

JJ:

The problem with the Left in charge of this is that it always involves force and taking away the right to choose.

The best plan I have heard for this is to pay those who have the most unwanted kids with the biggest drain on the system to be sterilized. This plan does not take away free will. I read of a woman who used her own money to do this and guess who attacked her and threatened lawsuits?

It was the Left who claim they want population control.

The Left wants population control, but only on their terms where they can gain more control of our lives.

"TWall":

"If we keep heading down the road to gross overpopulation that will be the case for everyone. I know you won't agree, but that's fine, I know you don't believe in facts."

JJ:

To "TWall":

I agree that overpopulation is a problem and that it must be contained by some means, but the difference is this.

Those on the Left want to use force and those on the Right want to use free will to accomplish this:

The earth is capable of sustaining more human beings than the Left thinks however. Here was their thinking on the first earth day in 1970:

"By [...] (1975) some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions." (Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University Biologist)

"It is already too late to avoid mass starvation," (Denis Hayes, Chief Organizer for Earth Day)

Instead of advocating force due to mass hysteria a plan to limit population must be created that does not infringe on free will. Many people too poor to properly raise their kids would of their own free will be sterilized if the price was right. An investment of a couple thousand could save a million in resources.

"Tsparks":

"Joe, what do you propose doing with all that spent radioactive fuel that has a half life of what, several hundred thousand years? Follow Homer Simpson's lead and go dump it in Lake Springfield?"

JJ:

Quite simple. All the plutonium ever created in the United States through the creation of electricity through nuclear power would fit in my garage. I would be happy to dispose of it for a couple billion dollars.
