Chapter Sixteen

It was a bright and sunny morning in the city of Prescott. Henry and Oran were having a cup of coffee at the cafe next door to the motel. "Henry," said Thomas, "those two men that call themselves Baker and Phillips are certainly a mystery. I called the office last night and no one there knows anything about them. There is one thing for sure and that is they are not working for the company."

Henry nodded. "Last night I went up town and had a couple of beers with Julie, and you know something? Those two characters almost beat us up here. They were in there drinking beer while you and I were trying out the air car. Julie thinks that they are up to no good.

"And I think she is right. We will keep our eyes open for that pair."

"I wonder what they are trying to pull?"

There was a solemn look on the face or Thomas. "It is hard to tell Henry. But I would bet that they are up to something that will do our cause no good. We have had several people that have offered to put up the money to join the club and have been refused:  Undesirable characters, people that would want to run everything. Maybe this pair is a couple of them."

"Sounds possible."

"It is very difficult to keep people from the underworld out of our" venture. We have tried to discourage them. But you know how it is. Those bastards have got their nose into everything."

"I know what you mean."

"When we reach the hundred mark there will be no more members taken in. Each one is allowed to bring in his or her immediate family, and that is all. There is sure to be some that are sore for being left out."

"Maybe Baker and Phillips are two of them."

"I gave the office a good description of the pair. Maybe they will come up with something. At least I hope so."

"Did you tell them anything about the air car?"

Thomas laughed. "I sure did. Right down to that wild ride. And by the way you owe me a new hat. "

Henry chuckled. "Pick one out, and I'll pay for it."

"No hurry. They got real excited about the car they want us to take it in with us. I am supposed to make you some kind of an offer."

"How much?"

"I don't know just yet. But I am sure that we can come to some kind of an agreement. I will call again tomorrow."

"That'll be great."

"In the meantime we have work to do. The first thing is to dismantle and crate those two wind machines. Then, we must also crate all your machinery; after we pay for it, of course. Have you come up with a price?"

Henry took a paper from his pocket and handed it to Thomas. "Here is an itemized list. I priced everything separately. It came to exactly fifty thousand. I think that is fair."

Thomas took the paper and looked it over. "Looks good to me. When I call in the morning I will recommend that we buy it, okay?"

"Good enough." Henry looked at his watch. "Nine o'clock. Buck should be up and around by now. He is the guy that owns the truck and forklift. He helped me put those machines in there. He can also lift them out. Then his driver will haul everything down to my place."

"Good. From there on in we'll use a chopper. So you get your man and get busy."

Henry got to his feet. "I am ready."
