It's quite possible it was made up, but then there is another possibility. That is Washington did have a supernatural encounter and related it to several people and Anthony Sherman was told of it by another soldier or Washington himself later on. Then when he told the story to the writer he rewrote it to make it as interesting as possible to his readers. If this is the case then we could have a mixture of truth and reality.

I have not seen the vision as 100 percent accurate but I think it has seeds of truth.
