The Game

My Friends,

I hope some of you found the time to watch the Boise State/Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl game. What a game! Most are calling it the best game anywhere of the season and maybe the best bowl game of all time.

We started off with a bang stunning Oklahoma with two touchdowns within the first few minutes and lead at the half 21-10. We continued to lead until the last few minutes when Oklahoma tied us up 28-28. Then with about one minute left our quarterback threw one of his worst passes of the season, the only major mistake he made in this game and it was intercepted and the Oakies made a touchdown to make the score 35-28, their favor.

What made this upsetting was that he made a similar mistake in the last big game of last season and it cost us the game. It looked like he was going to cost us the biggest game we ever played with the same mistake twice in a row. I felt sorry for the guy.

With one minute left and 7 points behind he said that about ten players came up to him and told him they had faith in him, that they could still pull it off.

The players pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and played their hearts out the last minute. Then with 7 seconds left our quarterback threw a touchdown pass and with a tricky hook and lateral play he was redeemed and the touchdown made.

The score was then 35-35 and went into overtime. Oklahoma had first possession and scored a quick touchdown and the extra point making it 42-35. It then took us four plays but we clawed our way to a touchdown at the last second. The score was now 42-41. If we went for the extra point it would be tied and we would go into the second overtime. Our guys decided to take a great risk and go for the two point conversion. We then tricked them with a Statue of Liberty fake and our star running back, Ian Johnson, ran for the touchdown making the final score 42-43. Seconds after making the winning score he cornered his girlfriend on national TV and proposed to her. What could she say but yes?

The residents of Boise have never been so elated. They were dancing in the streets and the 30,000 fans that traveled all the way to Arizona partied through the night. The mayor says he will give to key to the city to the team when they get back and we'll celebrate some more.

A lot of people were saying that an underdog like us could never beat a major BCS team like Oklahoma whose guys were so much bigger and faster than us, but we did beat them through shear will power and intelligence.

It was a great lesson in life to watch this game and then be reminded to apply that never give up attitude to my own life.

We thus end the season with a perfect record of 13-0 and a coach who has never been beaten. This is the first time a coach has achieved this since 1890.

When life is sweet - relax and enjoy it. When life is tough, ignore it, forge ahead and look forward for the sweetness to return - for it surely will.
