It is true Chris, that much of individual enlightenment is dependent upon the individual but there are many aspects of the great Plan which are dependent upon the union of souls and cooperation of humanity.
As evidence of this, note that Jesus did not do his work alone but called twelve and then seventy disciples.
Buddha had his nine hundred arhats to assist him.
