Group Initiation and the Molecular Relationship
The Discovery
Back in the 1980s I wrote a book called The Molecular Relationship. The basic idea behind the book was based on the writings we have about Jesus and his Twelve Apostles and the great miracles and power demonstrated through them. Most are familiar with the great miracles attributed to Jesus such as turning water to wine, calming a storm at sea, walking on water, and great healings, such as causing the lame to walk the deaf to hear, the blind to see and even raising the dead.
People are less familiar with the fact that similar miracles are attributed to his disciples. When he was on the earth he sent them forth with the command to “heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” Luke 10:9
When they returned, they reported success saying that “even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” Luke 10:17
The scriptures indicate that Jesus did most of the miracles, but he did not intend to be the only example of such power, for he said this to the disciples:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12
Indeed, after the resurrection on the day of Pentecost great power came to the disciples, and from that day forward they indeed accomplished great works. Here is an example of such greater works attributed to Peter:
“Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.” Acts 5:15-16
That was a pretty impressive power attributed to Peter, that all that was needed to heal was to have his shadow pass over them as he walked by.
In my book I cover some of the miracles attributed to the apostles and give the reasons why they seemed to be almost superhuman compared to average disciples today. It also reveals that there were twelve females to bring balance to the twelve male apostles making a total of twenty-four corresponding to the twenty-four ancient ones before the throne of God (See Rev 4:4)
The insight presented in my book tells us that this great spiritual endowment of power is not limited to the disciples from the time of Jesus, but can be duplicated today. This order is called The Molecular Relationship because it is a higher correspondence to physical molecules where diverse atoms join together to create properties that they do not have alone. Indeed, there are many different human molecules that can be created but one with twelve males and twelve females that are capable of linking up through the hierarchy to Shamballa is what we are pursuing.
After writing the book I grew curious as to whether Djwahl Khul (DK) through Alice A. Bailey said anything about the principle. After reading his works several times I saw numerous teachings along the same lines, and took notes, but didn’t catch anything specific.
Then a while back I reviewed my notes and decided to do a more extensive search among the Bailey books for more correlations between what I had written and that which DK transmitted. As I plunged into my research, I was amazed at how many supportive quotes showed up, and finally a major realization hit me. It was one of those things where you feel like slapping yourself for not seeing it earlier.
That realization was this: DK’s teachings on group initiation and The Molecular Relationship are the same thing. They are in complete harmony with each other. The only difference is that some different aspects are presented in the two sets of writings about the principle.
In addition, DK in the book Rays and Initiations gives fourteen rules for group initiation, along with detailed explanations that will take centuries to fully implement. My book is mainly concerned with the creation of the first functional group.
At this point the reader may point out that there are many groups in this fourth kingdom we call humanity. With all these teachings from DK that are made available surely there is an example of one that has achieved group initiation.
The fact is that group initiation in the human kingdom is very difficult to achieve. The hierarchy has attempted numerous times to create and elevate groups to this level and failed. DK says this:
“Group initiation is no easy achievement, particularly as it is practically an untried experiment and constitutes essentially a pioneering effort. … The first objective of these experiments (going on quietly in various places all over the world) is to see if a group of disciples can work together in such a manner that an inner fusion can be seen—by the Masters—to be taking place. The results, hitherto, have not been encouraging. … Group after group has been tried and tested out by different Masters in various parts of the world, and hitherto all such attempts have proved failures.” Rays and Initiations, Page 208
Group initiation does not occur by merely getting a group together to learn or meditate. Instead, before that state where group initiation can take place there must be a number of conditions met, the most important of which is union through the soul where all can see basic principles as though they were one mind.
It is rare to find even two people who can do this let alone twenty-four. DK sees this achievement as very essential to ensure the manifestation of the kingdom of God on the earth.
DK himself tried to create a group with a consciousness capable of group initiation. The endeavor was covered in the two books on Discipleship in the New Age.
He handpicked fifty prospects to begin the work. Many were not ready and after a few years the number was reduced to twenty-four. I believe he hoped to keep that number, but six additional fell away and he was left with eighteen. Later he indicated that only about six were useable for that which he was hoping to achieve.
He said he failed to reach the goal but the experiment was worthwhile for the members would be better prepared in a future life because of the efforts in this one.
He did, however indicate when group initiation would be a success. He said this:
“Only in the middle of the next century will the really new type of group emerge. Tentative beginnings of such groups are to be found today but their success or their failure is an unstable matter and both so ephemeral that it is not easy yet to bring them under law. One ambitious, disloyal person, for instance, can wreck a group.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Page 624
We are told then that group initiation is expected to be a reality by around 2050. I would be 105 by that time so I am hopeful it can happen earlier.
He points out in the above quote why establishing such a group is so difficult saying that “One ambitious, disloyal person, for instance, can wreck a group.”
Indeed, trying to get twenty-four, or even twelve or seven working together in the harmony of the soul is a herculean task.
That said we shall move forward and examine some of the essential teachings from DK that can take us to the union of souls where group initiation can occur.

What is Group Initiation?
DK never comes out and gives a couple clear paragraphs defining exactly what group initiation is. He does talk about it extensively explaining aspects of it, but seems to leave it up to the reader to conceptualize how it would manifest and operate when it becomes a reality.
He has made it pretty clear what initiation is for the individual seeker. An initiation represents a major step forward in consciousness that removes limitations and dispels illusions causing the pilgrim to master aspects of the worlds of form and to advance on the path that takes him back to his source.
There are seven initiations to be taken on this planet and two additional to be achieved outside of this solar system.
The first initiation begins with what is called “the birth of Christ within the heart.” Here the seeker begins to realize that inner contact with spiritual sources is possible and seeks to purify himself by mastering the attraction of the physical realm. He seeks to control the pull of his physical appetites and sex drive and does not let the allure of wealth control him.
The second initiation marks the control of his emotional nature and the third control of the lower mind giving him ability to see through illusions that deceive most of humanity.
Speaking of group initiation DK says that “such groups are ever composed of those who have taken the first initiation, and the name of these is legion. They are to be found in every country. There are not, however, so many who are ready for the new era of group initiation.” Rays and Initiations, Page 19
So, groups seeking group initiation must be composed of those who have achieved the first initiation or higher, but he points out that not all these are ready. It is likely that few are ready since there are many who have achieved the first initiation, but none presently who have achieved it as a group.
The closest thing we have in history to group initiation were the twelve apostles of Jesus. They and associates met on the day of Pentecost. Of this it is written:
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.” Acts 2:1-3
After this a crowd gathered because of the great sound and Peter went out and spoke to them. The account continues:
“And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled,” Acts 2:5-7
Concerning this event DK says this:
“The Pentecost will become truth. All men will come under the tide of inspiration from on high, and though they may speak with many tongues, they will all understand each other.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 47
This event “signifies the universal dissemination of the Christ consciousness throughout all time in the heart of every human being; to this the words and promise, ‘Lo, I am with you all the days, even until the end of the world,’ bear witness.” Rays and Initiations, Page 356
From this we gather that the coming event of group initiation will cause “the universal dissemination of the Christ consciousness” will cause people though they speak many tongues “they will all understand each other.”
DK says this about this use of a form of telepathy being manifest though this process of group initiation:
“Can you not see, therefore, how a miniature replica of the Brotherhood can be established on earth and how in decades to come the working disciples of the world, the isolated initiates in the many world organisations and the personnel of the New Group of World Servers will automatically respond to the telepathic sensitivity of such groups as will be found working in the many Ashrams of the Masters?” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pages 24-25
This “telepathic sensitivity” manifested 2000 years ago and will manifest to an even greater degree when the process of group initiation is consummated.
Even though Peter demonstrated group telepathy on the day of Pentecost this great event apparently did not fully demonstrate the consummation of group initiation for as stated earlier “Group after group has been tried and tested out by different Masters in various parts of the world, and hitherto all such attempts have proved failures.” Rays and Initiations, Page 208
It’s possible DK was speaking of the current age for it appears that Pentecost was at least a partial success, but the original group was martyred shortly thereafter and there is no record of anyone taking their place.
DK indicates that the consummation of group initiation will occur when anchored where it will not be disrupted, but will be a living and growing organism and will accomplish something that was only hoped for in the days of the early church. That is the manifestation of the kingdom of God upon the earth or the answer to the prayer of the Christ: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” Matt 6:10 This will occur when the realization of Christ becomes the realization of groups which is “the kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 17:21
DK encapsulates the mission of group initiation quite succinctly:
“Growing out of the integration of this new group, there is being formed in the world that ‘bridge of souls and servers’ which will make possible the merging of the inner subjective Hierarchy of souls and the outer world of humanity. This will constitute an actual fusion or blending and will mark the initiation of the human family through the achievement of its foremost pioneering members. This is the true “marriage in the Heavens ” of which mystical Christianity speaks and the result of this fusion will be the manifestation of the fifth kingdom in nature, the kingdom of God. In the past history of the race, a great event occurred which brought into manifestation the fourth kingdom in nature, the human kingdom. We stand now on the verge of a similar but still more momentous event—the appearance of the fifth kingdom, as a result of the planned activity of the New Group of World Servers, working in collaboration with the Hierarchy of perfected souls, and under the guidance of the Christ Himself. This will usher in the New Age wherein five kingdoms in nature will be recognised as existing side by side upon earth. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 32
The fifth kingdom spoken of there represents the Christ and his numerous associates of master souls with a consciousness of the kingdom within, representing the kingdom of God. We are told in the above quote that the completion of group initiation will be “under the guidance of the Christ Himself. This will usher in the New Age wherein five kingdoms in nature will be recognised as existing side by side upon earth.”
Thus, the kingdom of God and the human kingdom will function side by side to bring peace on earth and goodwill to humankind.
From all that is written then about group initiation we could sum up a concise definition as follows:
Group initiation occurs when a group of individual entities unite together as one mind with one purpose in harmony with the Christ, and their higher selves to manifest a higher state of consciousness shared equally by all in the group.
Or perhaps this summary from DK:
“Group initiation is based upon a uniform and united group will, consecrated towards the service of humanity and based upon loyalty, cooperation and interdependence.” Rays and Initiations, Page 17
We will next explore the writings of DK to see how this process will take place and what the end results are supposed to be.

A Major Obstacle to Group Initiation
As mentioned earlier, the manifestation of group initiation will mark an extremely significant event in the evolution of our planet. DK said that the appearance of the human kingdom was “a great event,” but that which will be produced by group initiation will mark an even greater event which “will usher in the New Age wherein five kingdoms in nature will be recognised as existing side by side upon earth.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 32
The fifth kingdom represents the Kingdom of God, the Spiritual Hierarchy led by the Christ. Imagine what it would be like for humans to be able to work side by side with the Masters of Wisdom.
Concerning this great event initiated by group initiation DK says “There will (through this and analogous groups) be set in motion on earth a network of spiritual energies which will facilitate the regeneration of the world.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 23
This is obviously a tremendous event awaiting us so it is wise to ask ourselves what is needed to create a group capable of group initiation. What qualities must the individuals involved possess?
The first thing an applicant must have for group initiation is a vision of that which is to be achieved. If the individual realizes he is working toward perfected group life that “will facilitate the regeneration of the world,” then he will have much more staying power than if he sees himself merely joining just another spiritual group that may lead to some extra knowledge or self-improvement.
It must be realized that a group dedicated to group initiation is no ordinary group with ordinary goals, for members are treading a path that can literally change the world and eventually unite heaven and earth.
If the seeker receives an intuitive flash of what can be, then that great inner resolve will form within necessary to endure to the consummation, even if it extends to future lives.
When the group begins to form from individuals who have seen the vision and desire to be a part of something much greater than themselves, then they must seek union as a group. Achieving group initiation is impossible without the union of souls, or union on a soul or higher spiritual level.
Here DK gives us the first two qualities the aspiring group must acquire to begin the path toward group initiation:
“The first thing that has to be established in a group of disciples is love and trust, for without that there can be no true transference of thought. Where love and trust do not exist, they must be definitely and consciously developed.
“A second rule governs this telepathic relationship and this is that all ‘crises of criticism’ must be most carefully avoided by all disciples if they want to bring about the needed rhythm.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 725
The first step involves the disciples, not just liking each other, but loving and trusting each other. To develop real love and trust requires more than just meeting together for learning and meditation, but establishing relationships where the individuals actually know each other and despite their personality imperfections still see the Christ within and love and trust their fellow travelers.
This leads us to an all-important second step where “all crises of criticism must be most carefully avoided by all disciples.”
Something I have found to be of great importance in my study of DK’s works is to pay attention to his exact wording. If the student does not do this he may come away with a generic, but useless understanding while missing the major point.
Notice the phrase “crises of criticism.” Now, many teachers have taught that it is important to avoid criticism, but that is not what DK says here, as sometimes constructive criticism is necessary. What he warns the group against is a crisis of criticism.
How is that different from an honest criticism?
To understand it is helpful to realize that criticism has two basic effects, one positive and the other negative.
The positive occurs when the one criticizing is recognized as attempting to be sincerely helpful and the one being criticized does not take offense, but takes the criticism into consideration.
Example: A certain individual gives speeches to local groups on a regular basis. After arriving home his wife, who attends the events, sits him down at a table and says: “Honey, you gave a good speech, but I think there is one thing you can do to gain more acceptance and increase your audience.”
“Really, what’s that? He asks.
“In many cases you use ‘I’ when you could use ‘we.’ When you do this, especially where other people are involved, it makes it sound like you have a big ego and not sharing the credit for the work involved.”
Instead of being irritated and defending himself, the guy reflects a moment and responds, “Are you sure? I wasn’t aware of doing that?”
She responds: “Yes, I am sure. I’ve also heard comments from your friends who seem to feel more comfortable talking to me about it than you. Let’s listen to a recording of one of your speeches and just see how often you used ‘I’ when it could have been ‘we.’”
They listen to a recent speech together and he responds: “I have to admit, you are correct. I’ll start working on correcting this with my next speech.”
This positive criticism was a win for both of them. Unfortunately, most criticisms create more negative results than positive. Here is an example where both sides are part of the problem.
After arriving home the wife says: “Your projection of ego in your speech tonight was over the top. All we heard was I, I, I, I and no we. You’ll be lucky if anyone wants to listen to you again.”
“He responds, “Maybe if I had a little support from you I’d feel more like saying ‘we.’”
The dialog went downhill from there, until it became a crisis.
Just as a crisis of criticism can occur with two people it can happen with even greater negative effects in a group. Let us say that a group is working on a project and Jim feels that three of the members are not doing their share, while he feels he is doing more than his share. He can’t stand the situation anymore, so during a meeting he complains about the three supposed laggards.
The three take offense and in return point out some of Jim’s flaws. It goes downhill from there. The vibration of the whole group is lowered and group soul contact seems to be a distant memory.
The group here does indeed experience crisis of criticism and it will require wise leadership to guide it back on the correct course.
Concerning this problem DK says this:
“The healing energy of the spiritual Hierarchy cannot flow through the group if there is disharmony and criticism. The first work, therefore, of any group of healers, is to establish themselves in love and to work towards group unity and understanding.” Esoteric Healing, Page 6
If there is love, understanding and accurate communication within the group the problems can be articulated and worked on as the group moves forward on the path. Allowing the group to descend into negativity is the major inhibitor to group initiation, but there is no shortcut. The problems posed by the personality self must be neutralized.
Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger. – Franklin P. Jones
The Union of Souls
Concerning the consummation of group initiation DK says this:
“In due time, there can exist on earth a replica of the Hierarchy, its methods and techniques of work.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 34
If therefore we wish to know the qualities group members must have to advance toward group initiation which would accomplish this, we merely need to examine some of the qualities that make the Hierarchy what it is.
An all-important quality that exists in the Hierarchy is unity:
“In the Hierarchy there is complete unity, based upon a recognised isolation of spirit from matter.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 756
A key to unity is given in this quote which is “a recognised isolation of spirit from matter.”
In the realm of pure Spirit there is only unity, but in the lower worlds of form there are differences everywhere which makes unity very difficult. The Hierarchy therefore keeps their attention on spiritual consciousness which sees the unity behind all creation. This enables them to work as if they are of one mind.
The Bible itself predicts that humanity will also achieve this state:
“Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.” Isa 52:8
DK adds this:
“That which counts with the Hierarchy as the Ashrams function is the establishing subjectively of such a potent group interplay and group relation that an emerging world unity can be seen in embryo. A joint power to be telepathic or a group capacity to intuit truth is of value and somewhat novel. It is the functioning of groups who have the ability to work as a unity, whose ideals are one, whose personalities are merged into one forward swing, whose rhythm is one and whose unity is so firmly established that naught can produce in the group the purely human characteristics of separation, of personal isolation and selfish seeking, that is new. Unselfish people are not rare. Unselfish groups are very rare.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 22-23
He covers a lot of ground in this quote and gives numerous hints that can enhance the unity of a group.
First, he envisions a group that sets an example as to what the evolving world itself can achieve. In other words, the united group will foreshadow “an emerging world unity (that) can be seen in embryo.”
If an endeavor produces beneficial results which can be accomplished on a small scale, then the world will be inspired to duplicate it on a large scale.
Next, he mentions “A joint power to be telepathic or a group capacity to intuit truth.”
It is interesting that he mentions the ability to be telepathic and the ability to intuit truth in the same sentence as if they are related, for indeed they are.
Members of a group who have experienced initiation together will obtain the power to understand each other and communicate beyond the black and white use of words. What may not be realized though is that the intuitive recognition of truth is also a form of telepathy for the seeker receives wordless knowledge from his own Higher Self or Higher Lives.
This telepathic communication between the members of the group with each other and Higher Lives creates a oneness of understanding which is essential to maintain a connection of spirit and matter or heaven and earth for the group.
The group is to have the “ability to work as a unity, whose ideals are one.”
Because the group will have telepathic/intuitive abilities they will “work as a unity.”
Yes, there are some groups that appear to work as a unity but in most cases, it is because they are led by a strong authority, and instead of being a unity through understanding they are united through a fear of dissent. The initiate group will be one because their “ideals are one.”
Ideals for such a group are much different than the standard human ideals of becoming prosperous and living a life of pleasure. The ideals for the initiate group always deal with service to humanity itself rather than service to self, but with the realization that in the end when this type of attitude prevails both the one and the many will benefit.
The next statement has an unusual wording, for he speaks of group members “whose personalities are merged into one forward swing,”
The personality self includes the lower mind, our passions and desires, as well as the actions we take in life. All members of the initiate group will be like one life having all members dedicated not to some failed goal from the past, but to “one forward swing.” The use of the word ‘swing” indicates a leap forward rather than a slow crawl.
This thought reminds me of a quote by Robert F. Kennedy from 1968. He often said this in his speeches: “Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”
Next, DK says that the group’s “rhythm is one.”
Think of two dancers or musicians performing in or out of rhythm with each other. They must be in synch for things to work. In the successful group each person will not be doing his own thing not connected to the group as a whole but will be seen as playing a note that is part of the same song embraced by all in the group.
Finally, he ends with stating that the “unity is so firmly established that naught can produce in the group the purely human characteristics of separation, of personal isolation and selfish seeking.”
He tells us that these group qualities are rare but necessary for group initiation. They will not be easy to achieve because the power of the ego for individual glory is great, but it will be achieved – first by the few, but finally by the many until “the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” Hab 2:14
I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man I have ever met! – Dwight L. Moody
Is Unity Possible?
I have taught about the union of souls for many years and have gotten some interesting feedback on the subject.
Many sincere spiritual students believe that spiritual union is an abstract idea that may exist in the higher planes, but is impossible on this dense physical one. Here we can only have the illusion of union through the strong arm of a cult or group leader who pressures everyone into conformity. They think that about the best free souls can do is to meet together and send positive energy toward healing the planet, peace on earth or take advantage of some planetary alignment.
This type of thinking is one of the reasons that group initiation has not yet happened for, contrary to the thinking of many, a united vision of those things that are related to true principles is not only possible but mandatory.
“As the rapport becomes more firmly established, no fundamental divergences of opinion can appear; the aims of the soul and the personality blend and fuse; the objectives before the disciple and the Master become identical, and the group life conditions the service rendered by both of them…. The needed fusion can always take place among disciples when they meet on the level of the soul and when the service to be rendered is the dominant factor and not so much the how of rendering it; for this each disciple is independently responsible.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 687
Notice that he carefully states that “no fundamental divergences of opinion can appear.”
With the use of the word “fundamental” he is telling us that there are important aspects pertinent to group life which must be seen through the eyes of the soul and not be in dispute.
There are, however, many views not fundamental to the creation of group unity on which numerous different opinions may be held.
Examples of such views are one’s favorite ball team, favorite music, favorite food or diet, favorite culture, and some political views.
Where political views become a problem is when some members think that other members are supporting the dark side with their views. Views reaching this level of division can definitely affect the unity of the group.
Concerning the differences which are not fundamental, here is DK’s advice on handling them:
“It (group stability) will come if each of the group members will simply mind his own business and permit his group brothers to mind theirs; it will come if you keep your personality affairs, your private concerns and troubles out of the group life; it will come if you refrain from discussion of each other and of each other’s affairs and attitudes. This is of supreme importance at this stage of the group work; it will mean—if you can achieve success in this—that you will be able to keep your minds clear of all lesser things which concern the personality life. This means that your minds will be free, therefore, for group work.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 60
The key sentence here is the advice to each disciple to “mind his own business and permit his group brothers to mind theirs.”
Each group member must make it a top priority to make himself a valuable member and do nothing to distract from group purpose. If the group is not progressing the way he thinks the temptation is to point fingers at other group members and demand they make changes or be reprimanded in some way.
One might say the first rule of group work is to work on yourself and make yourself a suitable member before you worry about anyone else.
Here he speaks of the importance of focusing on the group instead of the self and the individuals within it.
“This will become possible when the individual members in the groups and the individual groups of disciples lose sight of their own identities in an effort to make this hierarchical work possible. In this type of group work, the feelings, reactions, wishes and successes of the individual most emphatically do not count. Only that is regarded as of importance which will further group effort and enrich the group consciousness.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 43
The main goal for the individual is to just not let personality refractions get in the way of unity, for the union of souls is of supreme importance:
“No group can be used in world service that is not working in perfect accord and this harmony must be attained as a group. It must be brought about, not through the process whereby people withdraw within themselves and thus inhibit that which upsets group equilibrium, but by the process of loving self-forgetfulness.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pages 194-5
Here he gives clues to achieving unity:
“It is the subjective life unity that is of interest to the teachers on the inner side of life, and the production of a network of true healers all over the world… all that is needed is the elimination of the undesirable and the misunderstood interpretations of known facts, and the misapplied information, also the cessation of selfish interest, financial exploitation and greed.” Esoteric Healing, Page 375
In this quote he gives some important hinderances that interfere with group unity. An important hinderance to be eliminated is “the undesirable and the misunderstood interpretations of known facts, and the misapplied information.”
The basic problem here is not that members do not have the correct information in an area of disagreement, but that some create distorted interpretations as well as misapplying the information available.
We see this happening today, especially in political discussions online and in the media. The two have the same facts before them but vary widely in their interpretation. Maybe one person goes with where the facts lead, but the other jumps to conclusions that are in harmony with his bias rather than where the facts lead.
Some time ago I laid out a path to finding truth as much as possible by the use of common sense that we all should possess. One of the prime principles of discovery is to find those facts that have a high probability of being true and then either discounting or eliminating those ideas that are not in harmony with them.
Let us suppose you encounter someone who believes in a flat earth. The perceived fact that has an extremely high probability of being true is that the earth as a globe has been seen and photographed by many nations and hundreds of journeys into space. This gives us a high probability that the earth is a globe and anything that contradicts that should be either discounted or given little rational value.
To maintain the earth is flat, despite all the evidence, requires “misunderstood interpretations of known facts.”
The true believer may then use “misapplied information” to maintain his position. “Just look out upon the sea,” he may say. “The earth is flat as far as the eye can see.”
It is true that the earth looks flat from that vantage point, but that information is not correctly applied.
The problem here is that most readers can see how this principle of Discovery plays out with the flat earth, but the real test comes when one’s own pet beliefs are challenged by information that has a high probability of being true.
True disciples should be able to have a reasonable discussion and examine the facts as they are and reach agreement. Following Occam’s Razor is always a good idea, which states: “The simplest explanation is usually the best one.”
The ultimate solution to disagreements is soul contact. All souls see basic principles through the same eye of vision, but one has to put personal bias aside to reach the soul with a fellow disciple.
The problem for many is the clinging to the ideal of what should be rather than just making a step in the right direction. Voltaire said that “The perfect is the enemy of the good.”
Some may only support a plan that will result in a perfect outcome, but if that plan has virtually zero chance of success it become the enemy of a good compromise that is not perfect but produces a “good” step forward.
The creation of the United States Constitution is a case in point. Some were very disappointed that it made allowances for slavery, but supported it nevertheless because it did create a step forward in human freedom. These visionary souls saw that the document could be changed for the better in the future and that the time would come that another step would be made in freeing the slaves.
The Constitution still is not perfect, but has been the cause of much that is good and further changes may yet be coming that will lead to “a more perfect union.”
DK warns that “The temporary ideal (intended to guide the undeveloped aspirant) can become a barrier, separating him from truth and from the realisation of a truer vision. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 85
Removing these barriers is the great task.
Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate. – John E Kennedy
The Power of Group Initiation, Part 1
DK tells us that the full consummation of group initiation has not happened yet, but when it does it will mark the most significant advance since the advent of humanity. It will “set in motion on earth a network of spiritual energies which will facilitate the regeneration of the world.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 23
He also speaks of “the formation upon the physical plane of that group of aspirants and disciples which, given time and opportunity, can salvage a distressed world and bring light and understanding to humanity.” Pages 22-23
He tells us to look for this to happen around the middle of the 21st century, but a fuller consummation may take a couple centuries:
“These—during the next two centuries—will change the face of our civilisation and inaugurate a period in human history in which methods will be tried and principles established which remain as yet totally unknown to the majority. That period will lead the race into a civilisation and a mutual, cooperative interplay which will bring to an end the present era of selfishness and competition.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pages 145-146
Since this will initiate a great advance in human evolution the natural question for us to ask is what can we expect from these emerging groups which will demonstrate this giant leap for human kind?
DK indicates that we had a foreshadowing of the power of such groups on the day of Pentecost as given in the book of Acts. He pointed out that when Peter addressed the multitude who spoke numerous languages, but all understood in their own tongue, that this foreshadowed an enhanced ability to communicate that these advanced groups will have. He says that:
“The Pentecost will become truth. All men will come under the tide of inspiration from on high, and though they may speak with many tongues, they will all understand each other.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 47
This will go beyond the standard idea of telepathy and extend to a pure form of communication where there will be no misunderstanding. The oneness needed for future group work demands communication with full and correct understanding. This purity of communication will even extend beyond the physical plane:
“Can such a telepathic interplay be set up that the barrier of death will eventually prove no barrier at all and continuity of communication persist?” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 15
Not only will disciples be able to communicate with those who have passed on but they will have increased powers of intuition so they can have an enhanced grasp of higher knowledge so “there should eventuate such an enhancement of your powers to love, to intuit and to serve, that life will never again appear to be the same thing. You will grasp with surety then what now you dimly sense, and realise the wonder of group love, of group intuition and of group service; you will thus undergo a joint illumination, a shared response and a united effort. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 76
This telepathic ability will not only extend to individuals, but from one group to another:
“More attention should be paid by occult students to the effect of the consciousness of one group upon another group, and the advancement of the lesser, by the means of the stimulating power of the greater, should be studied.” TCF, Page 463
From the account given in the New Testament it seems that the main thing that was different with Jesus and the apostles were the healing miracles, but DK indicates this may have been over emphasized:
“Only a Christ can heal by the use of the will, and He seldom in reality healed at all; in the cases where He is reported to have done so, His reason was to prove the possibility of healing; but-as you will note if you are familiar with the Gospel story—He gave no instructions to His disciples upon the art of healing. This is significant.” Esoteric Healing, Pages 676-677
Miracles are often attributed to instantaneous healing as noted in the Bible, but in this present age such healings are rare. Many feel that they have experienced a miracle if they can experience a fairly rapid healing.
DK has written a lot on healing and he emphasizes the adjustment of the flow of life-giving prana so a rapid recovery will be made. He speaks to both individual and group healers. It is only logical then then those who have taken group initiation will have enhanced abilities to heal. Even three people in harmony within a group can achieve advanced power:
“If in any organisation on the physical plane the Masters can get a nucleus of even three people who mutually interact (I choose the word deliberately) and who disinterestedly follow the path of service, They can produce more definite results in a shorter space of time than is possible with a large and active body of people who may be sincere and earnest but do not know the meaning of trust in, and co-operation with each other and who guard not the gate of speech.” TCF, Page 978
Then he speaks of a future wherein groups will replace individuals as mediums of healing:
“Present day healers should endeavour to break loose from the modern and traditional ideas as to healing; they should recognise the stupendous fact that healing must eventually be carried forward by groups which will act as the intermediaries between the plane of spiritual energy (either soul energy, intuitional energy or will energy) and the patient or group of patients.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 37
Rather than placing emphasis on raising the dead, which is always a possibility, the healers of the future will seek to negate the fear of death and put it in its right perspective:
“If I were asked to say what is the major task of all healing groups, such as the Hierarchy seeks to see functioning in the future, I would say it is to prepare human beings for what we should regard as the restorative aspect of death, and thus give to that hitherto dreaded enemy of mankind a new and happier significance. You will find that if you work along these indicated lines of thought, the entire theme of death will constantly recur, and that the result of this will be new attitudes to dying and the inculcation of a happy expectancy where that inevitable and most familiar event occurs. Healing groups must prepare to deal with this basic condition of all living, and a major part of their work will be the elucidating of the principle of death. The soul, we are told, must return to the one who gave it. To date that has been an enforced and dreaded restitution, one which engenders fear and which leads men and women everywhere to clamour for the healing of the physical body, overemphasising its importance and making them regard the prolongation of earthly existence as the most important factor in their lives. During the next cycle, these wrong attitudes must come to an end; death will become a normal and understood process—as normal as the process of birth, though evoking less pain and fear. This comment of mine is in the nature of a prophecy and should be noted as such.” Esoteric Healing, Pages 389-390
So, what have we gathered so far about the forthcoming enhancements of group initiation?
There will be an enhanced ability to communicate and use of mental telepathy.
Intuitive powers will be increased along with group unity through soul contact.
Though the emphasis may not be on instantaneous healing, the power to heal and balance energies will be enhanced.
Rather than focusing in raising the dead the understanding of death as a doorway to a greater reality will be understood. When it is time to go a disciple will be able to emulate Jesus and, at will, release his spirit from the physical body and ascend.
These are a few abilities that those experiencing group initiation will have, but there is more that we’ll cover next.
“The energy of the unit is absorbed by the entire group and the group output in service is thereby increased. The group is then enabled to shift to a higher plane of service and of consciousness.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 578
The Power of Group Initiation, Part 2
When seekers learn that such a thing as group initiation can unite heaven and earth, even more solidly than was the case with the disciples with Jesus and on the day of Pentecost, they look at the powers that they had back then and anticipate that they could be even more pronounced in this age.
Some of the miracles described are pretty impressive. Jesus performed some amazing healing miracles and even raised Lazarus from the dead after being in the tomb for over three days. He also walked on water, turned water into wine, read minds and was himself raised from the dead. The after Pentecost mental telepathy was demonstrated along with tremendous healings. Peter walked through a wall and Phillip seemed to be teleported quite a distance.
Then Jesus made this promise to his followers: He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12
Some pretty impressive miracles were recorded there so the minds of seekers may run wild when they think of doing even greater works than Jesus.
What they do not consider is that a “greater work” does not necessarily translate to a more impressive miracle seen with the outer eye. The greatest miracles are those seen with the inner eye and involves transforming the hearts of humanity from the material world to the spiritual, from separation to union, from hate to love, all in the direction of the song of angels saying “Peace on earth, goodwill to all humankind.”
The greatest work to be done “will facilitate the regeneration of the world.”
That was a work that the Christ was unable to do in his time, but a greater work can now be done, after the struggle of the ages. Changing the hearts of many, instead of the few, will be a greater work for disciples today than was available any time in recorded history.
Think of it. Never in our known history has a stable peace and a universal brotherhood of goodwill been established on the earth. Manifesting this would be the greatest work ever accomplished in the history of humanity and the key to this is initiated groups who have linked heaven, or the Christ and his Hierarchy, with humanity.
The problem with outward miracles is that they impress people on an astral level and most of the ones that can be done by disciples can also be done by the dark brotherhood and their agents.
DK says this:
“May I remind you here that the Black Lodge initiates likewise heal or produce death and disease, and employ very similar techniques; the difference lies in the fact that they can work only with the personality rays of both healer and patient, and because they are more potent on the physical plane than are the Members of the Great White Lodge, their work is frequently most effective. The spiritual healer, working with the energies of light whenever possible, is seldom as effective physically. The members of the Black Lodge, or healers working under its influence, are, however, totally unable to work on a patient who is spiritually oriented to the slightest degree, and is therefore coming under the control of the soul; neither can they work through a healer who is spiritually oriented.” Esoteric Healing, Pages 705-706
This statement may remind one of the miracles done by the priests of the Pharoah in front of Moses or later by Simon Magus “which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one.” Acts 8:9
Early Christian writings portray him as a great distraction to the apostles for he impressed the people with miraculous healings and was said to be able to levitate and even fly. He could transform himself into a serpent, make the dead appear and numerous other magical things.
There was one thing he could not do and that was to manifest the Holy Spirit, for he only worked with lower material forces.
He was so impressed with the people receiving the Holy Spirit that he offered Peter money in hopes of obtaining power over it, to which Peter responded: “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.” Acts 8:20-21
The true Spiritual Hierarchy does not place strong emphasis on signs, for those representing the dark forces can show many, impressing those on an astral level. Furthermore, when signs do convert, they often draw the wrong people, for the Master said this: “A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign.” Matt 16:4
The teachers of light realize that the only true conversion comes from the heart being touched by the higher life of the Spirit through the soul. When that happens the most profound miracle of all has occurred.
This is the miracle that will transform the world that group initiation will offer to successful seekers.
Even though the greatest miracle is the inner transformation, outer miracles will occur and will become more common among the workers in the light:
“Healing groups will work as follows. The circle of workers, with the unit to be healed placed in their midst, will definitely apply themselves to the healing of that unit by the use of set mantrams, and by the following of certain movements they will cause the focal point of the downpouring force to be the sick member in their midst. By the stimulating power of that force, by its re-building quality, or by its capacity to destroy and eliminate, what you call miracles will be matters of everyday occurrence. Letters on Occult Meditation, Page 200
It is encouraging then that true disciples can look forward to a time of the manifestation of miracles, both inner and outer. “Miracles will be matters of everyday occurrence.”

The Power of Group Initiation, Part 3
DK made a number of additional statements about the qualities and powers that will be manifest through the group initiation process. He said this:
“These groups constitute the germ of a great experiment. If successful, they will, in the course of the next 275 years:
[1] Anchor on earth certain types of the higher forces which the race needs and which are not yet active.
[2] Develop the six supernormal powers to which I have referred above.
[3] Train the group members in that synthetic relation which characterises the Hierarchy and so prepare them for initiation. Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Page 54
He mentions six supernormal powers. Let us review them:
[1] “Intuitional response to ideas.”
As usual, it is wise to pay attention to his exact wording. Notice he is not saying that the members of the future groups will merely respond to ideas, or even apply them, but they will have an “intuitional response” to them and such a response will be “supernormal.”
So, what is a supernormal intuitional response compared to a normal response to an idea?
The regular response involves the reaction of the lower or personality self to the idea and how it benefits him and make life better for the individual.
On the other hand, when intuition comes into play the idea is understood on the abstract as well as the material level. The person will see the idea as if it were his own and understand how it can be applied beyond the individual level, or beyond the one to the many.
Here is the next power:
[2] “Sensitiveness to the impression which some member of the Hierarchy may seek to make upon the mind of the disciple. It is for this reason that I am training you to utilise the Full Moon contact.”
This sensitiveness also involves the development of the intuitive faculty. It also involves the power of focused attention on the thoughts and impressions that come and go in the mind. There are thoughts that are merely caused by reflection on memories and calculations going on within the lower mind. Then there are thoughts and ideas that come from your own soul or Higher Self. Finally, there are impressions and ideas that come from higher lives such as the Spiritual Hierarchy. The disciple and group need to pay attention and learn to differentiate between n the sources of thoughts and ideas that flow through the core of the mind and heart.
[3] “Quick response to real need. You had not regarded this as one of the psychic powers, my brother, had you? I refer not here to a solar plexus reaction but to heart knowledge. Ponder on this distinction.”
The key phrase here is “real need.” People with good intentions desire to help others not as fortunate as themselves, but most are governed by solar plexus reactions which are not accurate, as they tend to reverse perception, as does a mirror, so the true need is not seen accurately. Instead of helping, a solar plexus reaction often enables and usually does more harm than good.
The disciple and the group need to shift the medium of perception from the solar plexus to the heart. Instead of going by sight and outward appearances of need, the heart can sense true need, something which is often unspoken, and by following this, the disciple can become a true and useful servant.
[4] “Right observation of reality upon the soul plane. This leads to right mental perception, to freedom from illusion and glamour and to the illumination of the brain.”
The group must overlook the personality and especially work to negate the dominance of the lower emotions connected with the astral plane. As DK says the astral plane is an illusion created by the interplay of the mind and the etheric life force in this physical realm. In the kingdom or realm of the soul the astral plane does not even exist as it seems to here.
The disciple and the group as a whole must focus on the soul as if the lower emotions do not exist, for then “The clear cold light shines forth and cold it is and yet the heat—evoked by the group love—permits the warmth of energetic moving out.” (From Rule one for Disciples and Initiates)
Then he gives this warning concerning the distractions of the lower self:
“As long as a disciple in training is focussed in his personality, group initiation will not be possible for him, his recognition of co-aspirants will be fleeting and rapidly disturbed by the critical lower mind, and a wall of thoughtforms, created by the personality, anent the group members, will be thrown up and prevent a united moving forward through the Door of Initiation.” Rays and Initiations, Page 343
Next, he talks about dealing with forces:
[5] “Correct manipulation of force, involving, therefore, an understanding of the types and qualities of force and their right creative weaving into service upon the outer plane.”
There are many different types of forces but in particular he is referring to forces that can be weaved “into service upon the outer plane.”
This would include the forces that circulate through the seven major centers, especially those belonging to the three major aspects of power, love and light. When these are recognized by the disciple then the forces of the lower self, related to our passions, are directed toward service of the whole rather than the self.
Then we have the force of life itself reflected in the prana that animates us that becomes directed toward, not just survival, but seen as providing power to serve.
Tuning into the various forces and directing them constructively is an ongoing challenge to the disciple and the group.
This next one is something not usually seen as a power or agent for success:
[6] “A true comprehension of the time element, with its cyclic ebb and flow and the right seasons for action—a most difficult psychic power to master, my brothers, but one which can be mastered through the use of patient waiting and the elimination of hurry.” The six powers taken from Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 1, Pages 49-50
Everything goes in cycles including time itself which contains all the forces circulating within it. If the group correctly discerns the cycles, they can then throw energy in the right direction, which would be like rowing with the current. But if they discern wrongly they may be in a situation where they seem to be rowing upstream.
It is therefore a supernormal power to discern the flow of energy in the various cycles and then make use of them so the group can have the wind at its back, so to speak.
An important energy to discern at this time is that from Shamballa which in this age is being released in cycles. The groups to come will be able to recognize the cycles of release and make use of them.

A Link with Shamballa
Perhaps the most impressive enhancement of human power through group initiation is projected in this quote:
“The energy of the divine will can and will galvanise with its dynamic potency the entire human family to the point where a group transition will take place from the fourth into the fifth kingdom.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 667
Instead of an individual becoming a master, leaving the earth scene and joining with the fifth kingdom we have presented before us the possibility of an entire group, or groups will ‘transition” into the fifth kingdom. Imagine what that would be like. This group would remain on the earth among regular mortals, yet possess all the assets of Christ and the Spiritual Hierarchy. The first occurrence of this would represent the externalization of the Hierarchy where those who have the full consciousness of Christ walk among us again.
This externalization is predicted here:
“When an adequate number of members of the fourth kingdom have undergone the process of initiation (technically understood), then the fifth kingdom will come into exoteric manifestation.” Discipleship in the New Age, Vol 2, Page 381
This may be more literal than many students suppose:
“The Hierarchy incarnates on Earth again, and for the first time since its last incarnation in Atlantean days. It is, however, a group incarnation and not the incarnation of individual Members. This is probably a subtle point too difficult for you to grasp.” Rays and Initiations, Page 334
Yes, there may be individual masters who incarnate but in general we are told that it is “not the incarnation of individual Members,” but “a group incarnation.”
This group incarnation which is the beginning of group initiation marks the beginning of the true externalization of the Hierarchy, but in connection with initiated groups rather than individuals.
When this happens “human beings in group formation will act as transmitters of pure spiritual energy, which will vivify every form in every kingdom in nature.” A Treatise on White Magic, Page 530
Then there is this promise:
“Man’s work is to raise the dead to life, to bring brotherhood into expression on the physical plane, and to transmit divine energy to a waiting world of forms.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 1, Page 267
This event will be considered the fourth great rent removing the barriers between heaven and earth. The first rent was through Moses, the second through the Christ and the third through Paul. Then DK predicts that, “A fourth great rent still remains to be made as a result of the energies released and the gained good which the three earlier rents have made possible. This fourth major rent will be made by humanity itself, standing with “massed intent,” focussed through the groups which are externalisations of the Ashrams of the Masters. It will therefore be made at the time that the Hierarchy takes physical shape upon the earth again.” The Rays and the Initiations, Page 194
Then he says this about the relation of initiated groups to the Hierarchy:
“They have, as a group, and from the angle of the Hierarchy, established a contact and are ‘in touch’ with the world of spiritual realities… so does this group of aligned souls come into contact with certain greater Lives and Forces of Light, such as the Christ and the Buddha. The aggregated aspiration, consecration and intelligent devotion of the group carries the individuals of which it is composed to greater heights than would be possible alone. The group stimulation and the united effort sweep the entire group to an intensity of realisation that would otherwise be impossible.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 2, Pages 112-113
He says that this process “carries the individuals of which it is composed to greater heights than would be possible alone.”
What are these greater heights?
It is greater than the fifth kingdom itself – beyond the spiritual Hierarchy to the seventh kingdom – Shamballa, where resides the Ancient of Days and his great council.
“In this way, if you will note carefully, there is established a direct linked chain from humanity, via the Hierarchy, to Shamballa. The Hierarchy is working at the establishing of this chain, aided by Their disciples.” Externalization of the Hierarchy, Page 308
“When the group—as a whole—has reached a similar point of realisation has together touched the fringes of this highest of all revelations for humanity. When, for the first time, they succeed in doing this, they will come—as a group—under the direct emanation of the Higher Three and under an aspect of the Council Chamber at Shamballa which has been hitherto unknown and unrealised. This will connote a high stage of initiation of the group and is, in effect, connected with inter-hierarchical activity.” Rays and Initiations, Page 271
The “higher three” would be the Three Buddhas of Activity who are councilors to the Lord of the World – Sanat Kumara.
This link with the seventh kingdom of Shamballa is only possible through the existence among humanity of an initiated group. When this happens the power of the Planetary Logos will become accessible to humanity:
“It is only in group formation that, as yet, the Shamballa force of the will can be tapped. They are useless to the individual under the new initiatory dispensation. Only the group, under the proposed new mode of working and of group initiation, is capable of invoking Shamballa. Rays and Initiations, Page 35
This power will then be used to heal the earth.
“Then from Shamballa will descend a stream of spiritual potency, qualified by the will-to-good, and this will reach the attentive Hierarchy. The Members of this Group will, through the medium of the Christ, pour light and healing energy upon the Earth and peculiarly into the consciousness of men. I am not able to express the effect of the outpouring from Shamballa in clearer terms.” The Rays and the Initiations, Page 94
This next quote is a long one but paints a great picture of what is to come when humanity becomes linked to Shamballa through the Spiritual Hierarchy:
“See you, therefore, the necessity of eventually organising a group in the world which will be so constituted and so carefully chosen and interiorly related that all its members are initiates, all have created their own “rainbow bridges” with understanding and accuracy, and all can now work in such complete unity that the group antahkarana becomes a channel of unimpeded communication direct from Shamballa to the group because every member of the group is a member of the Hierarchy. In this manner the three planetary centres arrive at the needed relationship, and another great triangle reaches true functioning activity. When this takes place, a revelation undreamt of will be manifested upon the Earth; a new divine quality, of which no knowledge at present exists, will make its presence felt, and the work of the Buddha and of the Christ, and the work of the coming Avatar, will be superseded by One for Whom both Shamballa and the Hierarchy have unitedly waited and of Whom the doctrine of the Messiah and the doctrine of Avatars have been and are today only the dim distant symbols… The group, therefore, to whom I address this instruction is not the group or groups who will first receive these papers. The instruction is intended for a group which will come later and which will prepare the way.” The Rays and the Initiations, Pages 257-258
A key phrase here is: “When this takes place, a revelation undreamt of will be manifested upon the Earth; a new divine quality, of which no knowledge at present exists.”
It is human nature to want to see physical signs and wonders such as great instant healings, raising the dead, teleportation etc. All that is possible but signs are not the goal of group initiation. They may occur, but more as an afterthought. The important miracle will be the transformation and redirection of human thought from the material world to the spiritual, from war to peace and from the focus on the individual self to what is good for humanity as a whole.
To this end all those who seek true group initiation dedicate their lives.
Who overcomes by force, hath overcome but half his foe. – John Milton
