The Lower Quaternary and the Spiritual Triad
We’ll cover both of these together because of their strong connection. In a nutshell they represent the lower and higher self.
Let us look at the lower quaternary first.
DK here defines it as it refers to the lower self as follows:
“The fourfold lower self, or man, in the three worlds. There are various divisions of this, but perhaps for our purpose the best is to enumerate the four as follows:
[1] Lower mind.
[2] Emotional or kamic body.
[3] Prana, or the Life Principle.
[4] The etheric body, or the highest division of the twofold physical body.” Initiation Human and Solar Pg 224
This basically represents our vehicles that our consciousness occupies within the three worlds of form. This composes the lower self and consciousness of form.
There are several correspondences to the four sides of the Quaternary. One is the city of the New Jerusalem, a city that lies foursquare. The city with the four sides represents the highest perfection that can be achieved in form. Those who enter the city must have the lower quaternary, the four parts of the lower self, dominated by the life of the Spirit.
The [biblical] four horses of the apocalypse are closely aligned with the lower quaternary, which in turned are aligned with the energies of the lower centers.
Here DK corresponds the lower quaternary to the lower centers and the spiritual triad to the higher three:
The Lower Quaternary
“1. The solar plexus.
- The spleen.
- Organs of generation.
- Base of the spine.
Above are the three higher:
- Heart.
- Throat.
- Head.
In the microcosm we have the lower quaternary separated from the Triad in a similar manner, and this analogy will bear pondering upon.” Treatise on Cosmic Fire, Page 203
He also corresponds them to colors:
“There are the rays of red, blue, yellow, orange, green and violet. There is the ray that synthesises them all, that of indigo. There are the three major rays—red, blue and yellow—and the four subsidiary colours which, in the evolving Monad, find their correspondence in the spiritual Triad and the lower quaternary.” Esoteric Psychology, Vol 1, Page 127
“The current point in human evolution “marks a point where higher and lower manas (mind) approximate, and where the concrete mind, meeting its highest development of this round, gives place to the intuition from above.” Treatise on Cosmic Fire, Page 599
The goal of the disciple is to master the lower quaternary and the requirements are “fourfold and concerns four vehicles. The results of this purity are also fourfold and have reference equally to the four sheaths. These results are, in the order of the vehicles:
[1] Conquest of the organs The physical body, [2] A quiet spirit The emotional vehicle,
[3] Concentration The lower mind or the mental body,
[4] Ability to see the self The synthetic result of the triple condition of the above sheaths.” Light of the Soul Pg 204-5
There are higher correspondents to the lower quaternary but unless noted otherwise DK is referring to the four ingredients of the lower self.
The Spiritual Triad
The Spiritual Triad is often referred to as the “Higher Self” or the “Higher Mind.” Technically, it is a Triad composed of Atma-Buddhi-Manas. Manas means mind and refers to the higher part of the mental plane, the third plane of existence, the highest in the worlds of form — the celestial.
The lower mind, which functions in the average person while in incarnation, is not part of this trinity, but a part of the lower quaternary.
Buddhi is the first of the formless worlds, the fourth plane in ascension. This is the carrier of ideas and is accessed through the intuition.
The Atmic is the fifth plane and is the source of eternal ideas and principles.
The lower Triad, (reducing the four to the three) completing the Star of David, is composed of the physical, astral and lower mind. It is important to note that the mind is that plane which is common to the two triads and is thus the key to bringing higher knowledge down to earth. Heaven and earth come together and is understood through the mind. Then the knowledge obtained is set upon its correct course through the desire for service registered in the heart.
Here are some quotes from DK shedding additional light:
“The higher mind (being the lowest aspect of the Spiritual Triad) can be regarded as a door admitting the consciousness of the soul-infused personality into a higher realm of contact and awareness. But again – as you can well see – there is nothing here but symbolism; there is no door, but simply a symbol indicating means of access.” Discipleship in the New Age 2, Page 194
“The stage wherein the lowest aspect of the Spiritual Triad (that of the abstract mind) becomes potent as the conveyor of ideas; these are transformed by the initiate into ideals for the service of humanity.” The Rays & the Initiations, Page 588
“It is through the activity established between higher and lower mind that fusion with the Spiritual Triad becomes possible, with points of tension arising at many points along the bridge, the antahkarana; it is through the activity of pure reason that fusion with the Hierarchy becomes possible, and it is that which produces those points of tension which we call Initiations.” The Rays & the Initiations, Page 541
“Let him learn to control and consciously employ the mind; let him train his mind to receive communications from three sources:
“The three worlds of ordinary living, thus enabling the mind to act as the ‘common sense.’
“The soul, and thus consciously become the disciple, the worker in an Ashram, illumined by the wisdom of the soul, and superseding gradually the knowledge gained in the three worlds. That knowledge, rightly applied, becomes wisdom.
“The Spiritual Triad, acting as the intermediary between the Monad and the brain of the personality. This can eventually take place, because the soul and personality are fused and blended into one functioning unit, this superseding again what we mean when we use the erroneous phrase ‘the soul.’
“Duality then takes the place of the original triplicity.” The Rays & the Initiations, Page 433
All are but parts of one stupendous whole, Whose body Nature is, and God the soul. – Alexander Pope
